House System

TEN HOUSES, ONE COMMUNITY OF SAINTS

The 2019-20 school year was the second full year that we implemented and improved on our House System, which is still in its infancy.

Most students have acclimated to and have come to appreciate the comradery (and the competition) that comes with belonging to a House. There is a feeling of assurance in our students knowing that they belong to a family of peers, faculty and staff who will support their goals and offer opportunities for all to share their gifts, talents and leadership skills.

“We’ve made great strides in improving our House System and solidifying the goals for keeping our campus environment inclusive and inviting,” said NDP director of House System Mary Lou Lachvayder. “We believe it is through a solid support system that students develop the courage to put themselves out there to share their gifts with their House, family and our school.”

A new development this year was the COIN program. COIN stands for Commitment to Ongoing Integrity that is Noticeable. Adults on campus were given a supply of COINS to give to any student they catch in the act of doing something good. The point is to reward and encourage good behavior. House Points were given to students who earned COINS.

“More often than not, teens do great things that get overlooked,” Lachvayder said. “We want our students to know that we see their good deeds, we acknowledge them and, most importantly, we appreciate them.” Giving a COIN is a simple gesture that would elicit a big smile from the recipient.

Through fundraisers, competitions, GPA, attendance at school functions, performances and athletic events, the Houses vie for House Points to see which House reigns supreme at the end of the year.

“All your dreams can come true if you have the courage to pursue them.”
