WELCOME | NOTRE DAME PREPARATORY

DEAR SAINTS, The 2019-20 school year got off to a truly amazing start as we welcomed 902 students back to campus. From day one, the campus was ignited by the energy of our student Dog Pound leaders and House Captains. Their participation at Mass, assemblies and athletic events, and their leadership encouraged younger students to be involved in all aspects of campus life. With the House System in its second full year, we were poised to focus on our academic inclusion programs this year to meet the varying educational needs of all our students. We continued to build on the Gonzaga Program for those with great promise, but in need of extra instruction time. Our Academic Center for Excellence was expanded to help with testing and accommodations. We laid the groundwork for our accelerated St. Thomas Aquinas Program that will serve students who are ready to accept the challenge of more intensive study. Our education pathways open doors for students to take electives that are in line with their interests and future career goals. So, between our House System, Education Pathways and our Academic

The building is coming together and it is our hope and prayer to welcome our community to a grand opening in the Spring of 2021. When we launched our updated website last year with the slogan “Accept the Challenge” we had no idea the challenge we would face in our second

semester when the COVID-19 outbreak shut down our school, our community and our country. But in true NDP fashion, we adapted and accepted the challenge to try to remain together apart through online learning and social media. We implemented a webpage dedicated to communicating Coronavirus updates and produced The Patroness, a daily newsletter to keep communication lines open and put hearts at ease. As an act of love and patriotism, our senior class had to forego many of the traditional senior events that they looked forward to since their freshman year. Though disappointed that we had to cancel Prom, the Auction and Fashion Show, and other events, we were able to celebrate them with both a drivethrough celebration and a formal graduation ceremony. And that made the ceremony that much sweeter. Another sad casualty of the COVID-19 outbreak is the fact that we were

Mike is just starting the MBA program at Yale University. “Mike was always the smart Casares,” joked Steve, then he added, “I congratulate the six men and their families from the class of 2020 at NDP on their choice of a military career. There is nothing like having a job that has real-world implications and requires honesty and discipline. I can attest to the value of NDP’s motto of strengthening mind, body and spirit.”

SEEKING HOLINESS IS PARAMOUNT FOR A MEANINGFUL LIFE Why are we here? We pose this question to our students daily. Yes, we want them to be smart in math, history, philosophy, science, business, language and technology. Our aim and higher purpose are to lead them to Christ who is all good and all-loving. Notre Dame Preparatory is more than a place of academic excellence, it is a place where we invite the Holy Spirit into our lives to aid us in forming those entrusted to our care. We believe our purpose is to strengthen each student: mind, body and soul. Living for oneself can lead to emptiness. But at NDP, it is our experience that serving the poor and marginalized, comforting the sick and infirmed, and being Christ to those who desperately need love, joy, hope and charity, lead to a full, blessed and more meaningful life. Every moment of every day, we believe that we are in the loving presence of God, and so we provide a learning environment that incorporates religious expression and fosters a relationship between our students and their Creator. In September, we held our All-School House Retreat on campus exposing students to inspiring speakers, small group discussions and opportunities for Mass and Reconciliation. This was the second year of our House System and each year we improve the All-School House Retreat. As the world gets noisier, the need to unplug is greater. We offer retreats to help students get away and connect with others and God. Our Kairos retreat program marked a milestone during the 2019-20 school year. With

These spiritual events organized by student leaders and NDP faculty and staff members illuminate how the hand of God is present in our lives. For many, their Kairos retreat is life changing. In the face of the novel coronavirus outbreak, we had to adjust the ways in which service hours were earned. Students were allowed to do service at home in the form of chores, projects or giving blood on their own. The school hosted two massive food drives during the quarantine period benefitting St. Mary’s Food Bank and Aris Foundation. Hundreds of school families and neighbors drove through the parking lot at Notre Dame Prep for the May The 4th Be You: Serving our Community, Celebrating our Faith event. They brought enough food to fill a minibus with peanut butter sandwiches, lunches, decorated sacks, dog food, drinks and toiletries for Aris Foundation. “The people at Aris Foundation were astounded by the amount of donations we delivered to them,” Dinges said. “It took us two hours just to unload the bus.” It was a similar situation for St. Mary’s Food Bank, filling two vans from top to bottom. Notre Dame Prep collected 3,567 pounds of food, $200 in gift cards and $125 in cash. “This was the biggest delivery by weight from a single organization that they have received since the COVID-19 outbreak,” said Matt

DADS’ CLUB Dads’ Club is an essential organization at Notre Dame Prep. Our dads adhere to the pillars of Engagement, Formation and Service. Last year Dads’ Club raised more than $17,000 for our school through their engagement events; The Meat-Up BBQ and the 2nd Annual Casino Night. Saturday morning hikes with outdoor Mass have become the signature formation events for Dads’ Club. The hikes took place once-a-month from October to March at Gateway Trailhead. Many members of our community including current students, parents and alumni were invited to join this beautiful and spiritual activity. When it comes to Service, our Dads’ Club helped out in a variety of ways. They worked beside their sons and daughters to prepare our campus for the Annual Open House and they acted as ambassadors welcoming prospective and new families at our admissions and freshman events. The work of Dads’ Club is appreciated and necessary for the stability and growth of our school.

Electives were highlighted during the 2019-20 school year as we built the infrastructure to create educational pathways that enabled Notre Dame Prep students to tailor their high school education to allign with their ultimate career goals. Our educational pathways give students real-world experience and a leg up on their public-school counterparts. We provide opportunities in robotics, accounting, marketing, broadcast journalism, business and more. NDP entrepreneurial students competed in the Seed Spot competition to showcase their business ideas. For the second year in a row, one of our teams earned a top place in the national Seed Spot Demo Day competition. Junior Bennett Curran and sophomore Lauren Skemp developed a mobile app called MyInk to help teens struggling with mental illness or thoughts of suicide find a network of help and crisis care. The two will have lifetime access to Seed Spot’s network of business professionals who can help them continue to develop and expand their app. Notre Dame Prep students are guided through their high school years by our accomplished and dedicated faculty who understand that a vibrant intellectual environment is fostered by faith and reason. Our counseling staff provides academic guidance, class scheduling,

Never before have our faculty, staff and counselors been tested more than during the COVID-19 crisis that profoundly changed the way we interacted with and taught our students during the final two months of the 2019-20 school year. We were fortunate that remote learning was not new to NDP due to our regularly scheduled “virtual days” when students participated in class remotely when the campus was used for teacher in-service, or our annual Eighth Grade Day. We were prepared to quickly adjust to remote teaching using the same methodology that we used for our virtual days. There is no replacement for face-to-face instruction and the dynamic interaction that occurs when teachers and students engage in meaningful dialogue. However, many of our teachers found creative and interactive ways to keep the student-teacher relationship alive and kept our community together while apart during the COVID-19 quarantine.

ATHLETICS More than 70% of Notre Dame Prep students participate in our highly competitive athletic programs, and we are constantly improving our facilities to help them achieve their athletic goals. Our community is extremely proud of all our student-athletes, many of whom excel both in the classroom and in the sport of their choice. Numerous NDP Saints earned a place on their respective AIA All-Academic lists for fall, winter and spring sports. Last year, 17 seniors signed letters of intent to compete at the collegiate level. Former Saints will grace athletic venues at West Point, Harvard, U of A, Oklahoma State and many more! Highlights from 2019-20 include state championships in D3 hockey, cheer and an individual championship in wrestling (senior Brock Locnikar at 225 lbs). After winning the AIA state championship, our cheer team went on to place second at the USA Spirit Nationals. The Saints football team enjoyed another winning season ending the year with an 11-2 record, giving our Dog Pound a lot to

cheer about. Six Saints earned all-conference honors, and Locnikar earned the 2019 Ron Prichard Award given to the top high school linebacker in the state. In swimming, junior William Bansberg made waves placing fourth in the state in 100 m backstroke and placing in the top 10 nationwide in the 400 m individual medley at the USA Winter Junior Nationals. Senior Ayden Chanin ended her high school career with a fourthplace finish in the state championships in the 500 m freestyle. The girls’ soccer team made it to the state semifinals and solidified their place as one of top teams in Arizona. They have made it to the playoffs every year for the past seven seasons; winning two state championships and one runner-up in that time frame. Our boys’ basketball team honored military heroes and sponsored a letter-writing drive during one of their home games. They collected more than 100 letters for deployed troops and invited military families to stand with them during the national anthem. Our spring athletes were deprived of their season due to COVID-19 and the sudden shutdown of AIA competition. We are proud and appreciative of the accomplishment of our seniors who missed out on their final high school season of baseball, boys volleyball, track and field, softball, lacrosse, beach volleyball and tennis. As a community of Saints, we recognize the importance and fun of high school competition, but our prayers are with all those who were severely impacted by the virus.

ARTS The arts enhance education because they can help tell our stories visually, musically, and through beautiful images. At NDP, we offer a variety of successful arts programs to allow our students to increase their intellect by exploring instrumental music, dance, drama, choir, painting, drawing, pottery, photography and video production. In 2019-20, under the guidance of new drama director Cecilia Henrich, The NDP Players garnered seven nominations for ASU Gammage High School Musical Theatre Awards for their production of Into The Woods including best lead male Bennett Curran, best lead female Olivia LaPorte, best supporting male Jacob Fevurly, best supporting female Kendall Luther, best vocalist Ruby Purcell, best dance ensemble, and best lighting team. The NDP players also produced a new play called Not Your Average Zombie Apocalypse by Richard Gremel, who attended the show and spoke about playwriting to our student actors and audience members.

With Mr. Phillip Hemmo’s direction, our guitar orchestra earned a superior rating at the Arizona Solo & Ensemble Competition, and they premiered a new composition by Canadian composer Luv Levesque called Pulsar, dedicated to Hemmo and the NDP Guitar Orchestra. In addition to these accomplishments, the guitar orchestra was the featured performance at the Arizona Educators Conference. Mr. Hemmo piloted an innovative program called Guitar to You, where he instructs music educators at the elementary school-level on how to teach classical guitar so that when their students enter high school, they are more advanced in their musical skills. He currently has five schools signed up for Guitar to You. Judges at the Northern Arizona University Jazz Festival enjoyed the sound of our jazz ensemble who earned an excellent rating at the annual showcase. Individual awards were given to Brooke Pauley for vocals and guitar, and Lars Nordhagen for trumpet. How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Just ask our choir director, Mrs. Deanna Hudson, who had three students accepted into Carnegie Hall’s Honors Performance in New York last year. They were Ashton Rains, Ruby Purcell and Frankie Keffer. Hudson was also chosen from a worldwide pool of music educators to teach at the Honors Performance event at Carnegie Hall. This was a first for Notre Dame Prep. All of our performing and visual arts students were showcased around the Diocese of Phoenix, at hospitals and at our own Winter Fine Arts Festival on campus. Soon their work will be displayed and performed in the new St. Catherine of Bologna Performing Arts Center opening in early 2021.

Our largest fundraiser of the year, the 2020 Reflection Auction was unfortunately canceled as the threat of COVID-19 impacted scheduled galas across the nation. Not only did this impede our event revenue goals, more importantly, it was heartbreaking for the Class of 2020 who were unable to enjoy this special senior tradition. CATHERINE OF BOLOGNA PERFORMING ARTS CENTER Amidst all the challenges resulting from COVID-19, it was decided to continue with our plans to build the Performing Arts Center in support of the arts programs at NDP. In November of 2019, we hosted a groundbreaking ceremony with Bishop Olmsted present. Also in attendance that morning were Congressman David Schweikert and Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane. We were blessed by an anonymous foundation with a matching gift to inspire all members of our community to donate to this much-needed space on campus.
