THE FIRST READING: READER:

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah Chapter 23 beginning at the 1st verse.

Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! says the LORD. Therefore thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who shepherd my people: It is you who have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. So I will attend to you for your evil doings, says the LORD. Then I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. I will raise up shepherds over them who will shepherd them, and they shall not fear any longer, or be dismayed, nor shall any be missing, says the LORD. The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. THE EPISTLE READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in Paul’s letter to the Colossians Chapter 1 beginning at the 11th verse.

May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke Glory to Christ our Saviour.

When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left.

Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing." And they cast lots to divide his clothing.

And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!"

The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, and saying, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” There was also an inscription over him, "This is the King of the Jews." One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, "Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” But the other rebuked him, saying, "Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?

And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong."

Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” He replied, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise."

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings: We have come today to the Feast of Christ the King. It is the final Sunday of the Church’s year; an ending and a beginning.

It is a relatively new festival that is built on the theological understanding that Christ is the King and Lord of the universe.

This observance is done ecumenically across Roman Catholic, Lutheran and Anglican Churches.

It is vital in an age of growing secularism to acknowledge and proclaim the supremacy of Christ over both the natural and man-made systems of the world.

Liturgically the Feast of Christ the King is an excellent precursor to Advent Sunday when we begin to contemplate the coming of our Lord both in his second coming and as the babe of the manger.

The image of Christ as King runs counter to what we see in the news about kingship and royalty.

Kings of this world live in castles; Christ on the other hands tells us that “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” Matthew 8:20 Kings reign from ornate thrones; our true King reigns from a cross; his crown is made of thorns and his almighty power is demonstrated in showing mercy and pity. (BCP page 179, Collect Proper 21) 7

In the face of his ultimate sacrifice on the cross our Lords stands calm, serene and in humble submission to the will of God. True imitation of Christ is to save those under our care.

We feel deeply for Barbados. As we prepare to celebrate the 53rd anniversary of our nation’s Independence we must pray that Christ may be enthroned in all institutions and enterprises within these shores.

These include our homes, schools, colleges and places of commerce and industry. We must remain connected to our spiritual roots, otherwise we will be in danger of losing our souls.

In discussion with friends and associates the view is often expressed that we have to make christianity attractive. It is vital to remember that what is attractive for the world is not necessarily so for the church.

The attractiveness of Christianity lies in living out the baptismal life in coming to Mass each week, and serving the needs of our brothers and sisters in the world in sacrificial service.

While we all want to see our young people doing well academically; it must never be divorced from God and commitment to his sacred body the Church.

May Christ be enthroned in our hearts and homes at this Independence time, and may he reign within us both now and forever.

NATIONAL INDEPENDENCE SERVICE The National Independence Service will be held today, Sunday November 24, 2019 at 3:30pm in the Garfield sobers Gymnasium. All are invited to attend, the theme is “One Nation, One Love, One Light”.

HEALTH GUILD INDEPENDENCE DAY WALK The walkers in their national colours, will begin at 5:30 am on Saturday, November 30, traveling from Enterprise (Miami) Beach to Silver Sands and back. After which there will be a picnic and games. For more information persons may contact any of the members of the Guild.

INDEPENDENCE BREADFRUIT ROAST All are invited to attend a Breadfruit Roast on Independence Day, November 30, 2019 beginning at 3:00pm. There will be the usual local fare available.

HOLY CONFIRMATION The Sacrament of Holy Confirmation will be held on Sunday December 8, 2019 in the 7:45am Mass. Please pray for those to be Confirmed.
