THE COLLECT AND READINGS THE COLLECT Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Saviour; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. THE LESSON A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Genesis Chapter 2 beginning at the 18th verse Then the LORD God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him." So out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for the man there was not found a helper fit for him. THE EPISTLE A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter to the Hebrews Chapter 2 beginning at the 9th verse But we see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, crowned with glory and honour because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for every one. For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through suffering. For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified have all one origin. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brethren, saying, "I will proclaim thy name to my brethren, in the midst of the congregation I will praise thee." And again, "I will put my trust in him." And again, "Here am I, and the children God has given me." Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same nature, that through death he might destroy him who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong bondage. For surely it is not with angels that he is concerned but with the descendants of Abraham. Therefore he had to be made like his brethren in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make expiation for the sins of the people. For because he himself has suffered and been tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark Glory to Christ our Saviour.

At that time, Pharisees came up and in order to test him asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?" He answered them, "What did Moses command you?" They said, "Moses allowed a !5

man to write a certificate of divorce, and to put her away." But Jesus said to them, "For your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, `God made them male and female.' `For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.' So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder."

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings: Next Sunday, God willing, nineteen persons who have been baptized shall proceed in the rites of christian initiation to the hand-laying rite of Holy Confirmation and then they will make their Communion for the first time.

From quite early in christian history the rites of initiation into the christian church developed with some variation in different regions.

We find however that by the end of the 4th century C.E. certain patterns had taken shape.

The pattern that emerged consisted of a symbolic water bath depicting our participation into the death and resurrection of our Lord.

Afterwards persons would receive the laying on of hands and an anointing or sealing with the oil of chrism.

The Bishop then as he is in the church today remains the Minister of the sacrament in these christian initiatory rites.

Professor Maxwell Johnson tells us that Cyprian, the great bishop of Carthage from 248 - 258 C.E. is !6

a significant witness to the theology and practice of Christian Initiation in the early Church. it is to the bishops that the newly baptized are immediately brought in order that "by our prayers and by the imposition of the 'hand they might obtain the Holy Spirit, and be perfected with the Lord's seal [signaculo dominico]" (Letter 73, to Jubaianus, 9) Cyprian interestingly enough was a staunch defender of infant baptism, putting forward the strong point that no one ought to be hindered from baptism and from the grace of God, who is merciful and kind and loving to all (Epistle 64) Most of this week will be spent in final preparation of the candidates for Holy Confirmation.

It is indeed a very exciting time in the life of the Christian to receive the Laying-on-of hands by the Bishop.

Our presence and participation in the rite will help us to remember our own moment when we too knelt before the bishop and renewed our baptismal vows.

We pray God’s blessing on those to be Confirmed and members of their families that it may be for them a time of refreshing, renewal and will make their commitment to God and the Church.

NEWS AND CURRENT EVENTS HOLY CONFIRMATION His Grace the Archbishop of the West Indies and Bishop of Barbados, Dr. John Holder will be in the parish next Sunday for the sacred rite of Holy Confirmation. Please pray for those to be Confirmed. The Mass begins at 8:00am.

ST. BASIL’S CHAPEL There will be no celebration of the Holy Eucharist next Sunday in the St. Basil’s Chapel ON HOLIDAY The Very Rev’d William Dixon will be on holiday for the month of October. May he have a a good time of rest and recreation.

ANNUAL LUNCHEON The annual parish luncheon will be held on Sunday, 25th October at Sunbury Great House from 12:30-3:30 p.m.

The cost is $60:00 for adults and there are limited children’s tickets at $30:00 each. Buy your tickets in groups of 8 or 10 and enjoy lunch together. Tickets are available from the ushers.
