LETTER FROM THE

BOARD CHAIR In June we celebrated the academic and personal achievements of our impressive Class of 2017. Our graduation and baccalaureate ceremonies give graduates and their families the opportunity to reflect on the deep and lasting impact a Notre Dame education makes on each student’s life. At the high school graduation, Mistress of Ceremonies Julia Goldschmidt reminded us that “faith” and “charity” are more than words engraved on Notre Dame’s school seal. They are “the essence of a woman of Notre Dame. As women of faith, we have learned to believe in ourselves because the good God, first and foremost, believes in us. As women of charity, our hearts have been stretched and defined through service learning, becoming in the words of Saint Julie Billiart, hearts as wide as the world.” Families choose Notre Dame, not only for the advantages an all girls’ education provides and the Academy’s commitment to academic excellence, but because of this legacy of faith and charity, rooted in our Catholic identity and the charism of Saint Julie and the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. In this spirit, I and the other members of the Board of Trustees are privileged to serve the Notre Dame community. We are pleased to welcome Andrew Gerardi P’20’23, Zachary DeCarlo P’20, and Matt Reber P’19 as the newest additions to the Board and would like to thank Frank Hallinan P’11’15’17 as he concludes his service as a Trustee. As an active member of the Advancement Committee,

George Van Kula Frank co-chaired the Golf Classic in 2015 and he and his wife, Tricia, graciously hosted Notre Dame guests in Naples, Florida in 2016 and 2017. We will miss Frank’s contributions to the Board and the Notre Dame community. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our outstanding faculty and staff. Without their talent and dedication to our mission and to our students, Notre Dame would not be the unique and vibrant place that it is today. Finally, I would once again like to thank each and every member of the Notre Dame community who has contributed time, talent or treasure during the last year. The progress we have made in pursuit of our mission and strategic vision would not be possible without your support. Sincerely,

George Van Kula Chair, Board of Trustees

MESSAGE FROM THE

PRESIDENT

In the fall of 2014, the Notre Dame community embarked on a collaborative, comprehensive strategic planning process to develop a “road map” that would guide the Academy to 2020 and beyond. With the development and implementation of our Strategic Vision 2015-2020 and Campus Master Plan, we commit to the Academy’s Catholic identity, mission and pioneering legacy of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. We also commit to excellence throughout the life of the Academy. I am pleased to report on the significant progress and impact of the strategic vision throughout the pages of this annual report and highlight a few significant milestones below:

Dr. Judith A. Dwyer Rendering of STEM Gallery

The Academy’s expanding global impact, evidenced by our Center for Global Leadership, represents a pivotal element of the strategic vision as we seek to educate, empower, and inspire young women to be compassionate leaders in a global society. Through teaching and learning partnerships with international sister schools, we provide our students with a deeper understanding of and responsibility for the diversity and complexity of our modern world. This year, the Center hosted educators and students from Singapore, Taiwan, and Japan and a delegation of our students recently returned from a visit to these schools in June. We look forward to establishing deeper collaborative learning opportunities with these and new sister schools in the coming academic year. We are committed to meeting the needs of 21st century learners by embedding our curriculum with state-of-the-art technology and providing our students with the finest learning environments. To that end, the Academy is currently implementing a 1:1 laptop program for all students

and faculty. Notre Dame is also designing a new 30,000 square foot Center for STEM Education that will foster collaboration, innovation and research.

We are honored that the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia selected our Mansion restoration as a 2017 Grand Jury Award Winner.

Generous STEM leadership gifts from Brian and Donna McNeill P’10’11, the Connelly Family, D’Arcy ’73 and Tamas Rudnay P’03’05, and Barb ’90 and Brian Riley P’19’21’23, along with support from the entire Notre Dame community, ensure that Notre Dame students will have the core competencies required to excel as leaders in STEM fields and in all careers.

These significant initiatives are among many priorities under implementation within our Strategic Vision 2015-2020, as we continue to implement Notre Dame’s roadmap for the present and the future.

The exterior of the Academy’s Mansion has been restored and returned to its earlier grandeur. The campus master plan calls for the restoration of the Mansion as the formal “front door” where the Academy welcomes new students, parents, alumnae, and visitors. This year, significant steps were taken to preserve the historic architectural features, such as black Vermont slate on the roof and “Peacock Plum” trim, with all 250 windows in the Mansion restored and releaded.

Thank you for your continued support of and engagement in the community of Notre Dame. May God’s goodness bless you and your families. Sincerely, Judith A. Dwyer, Ph.D. President

REPORT FROM THE

PRINCIPAL

This has been an exciting and productive year for the faculty, staff and students. Our focus on collaboration, leadership, and innovation this year led to many new initiatives and opportunities for our students, including introduction of new electives and learning platforms for the high school through the Online School for Girls; introduction of Mandarin Chinese and return of Latin to the middle school and high school World Languages course offerings and World Literature and Effective Writing for freshmen; and summer travel, service learning, and educational and cultural exchange opportunities for middle school and high school students. In addition to the development of our sister school relationships, highlights from the inaugural year activities of the Center for Global leadership include:

Global Classrooms Drexel University professor Dana D’Angelo led the faculty in professional development based upon Global Classrooms, a model for collaboration in which projects with our sister schools will be completed virtually during class time through synchronous and asynchronous communications and activities. These experiences will enrich the curriculum through the addition of valuable lessons gained through cross-cultural exchanges with students from other countries.

Speaker Series Three Notre Dame alumnae were invited to lead a panel discussion for the entire student body on April 3, 2017. This discussion was entitled “Women Leading Around the World” and focused on careers that require leadership skills and international experience and perspective.

During this past year, a committee comprised of administrators and faculty representatives from each academic discipline conducted site visits and researched exemplary faculty-based student advisory programs in several independent schools across North America, including: Harpeth Hall (Nashville), Marlborough School (Los Angeles), National Cathedral School (Washington, DC), The Study (Montreal), St. Paul Academy (Minnesota), and Wildwood School (Los Angeles). Our work in this area will continue this year with extensive professional development and facilitated program development sessions culminating in the launch of a faculty-based student advisory pilot program during the second semester, beginning with the Class of 2021. Our high school students now have the opportunity to pursue a rigorous course of studies and experiential learning experiences through participation in our newly created 4

Jacqueline Coccia Scholars Programs for STEM and Global Studies. Thirty-three members of the Class of 2020 were selected to participate as the first cohort of students in these new programs:

STEM Scholar of Excellence Program The STEM Scholar of Excellence Program provides opportunities for students to deepen their knowledge and demonstrate scholarship in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. A STEM Scholar utilizes the skills of problem solving, critical thinking and innovation across all disciplines and is equipped to solve complex, real world problems. Successful scholar students will graduate exceptionally prepared for continued study at the collegiate level in a STEM discipline and will receive a transcript designation.

Global Citizen Scholar Program The Global Citizen Scholar Program is a unique opportunity for high school students in which they can develop skills and gain perspective as global citizens through a rigorous course of study, involvement and leadership in co-curricular activities, and active participation in conferences, lectures, and cross-cultural exchanges, culminating in the presentation of a portfolio and transcript designation.

We are filled with enthusiasm as we look ahead to the 20172018 academic year and the implementation of new programs and the addition of the following new interdisciplinary electives: Graphic Design, Media and Society, Theater and Film, Stellar and Galactic Astronomy, Design Thinking, and Entrepreneurship. There is a long history of combining the academic study of the arts with the practice of creative expression itself. It is in this spirit that the Academy of Notre Dame is pleased to announce the establishment of a new multi-disciplinary department: English and the Arts to be chaired by Dr. David Califf.

BUSINESS OFFICE REPORT Goal Four of the Academy’s Strategic Vision 2015-2020 calls for continued strengthening of Notre Dame’s financial position, and I am pleased to report that we concluded the 2016-2017 school year with a balanced budget. We continue to strengthen the Academy’s financial position through the thoughtful stewardship of our resources.

Operating Income

Tuition and Fees 82%

There was a modest increase in tuition, and enrollment remained consistent with the previous year at 538, which reflects recognition of the value of a Notre Dame education. Financial Aid also was consistent with the previous year. The Financial Aid Committee’s continued goal is to maximize the utility of budgeted financial aid dollars, as set out in the fiveyear Strategic Vision. Notre Dame’s endowment totaled $8 million by the end of the fiscal year thanks to generous contributions and prudent oversight by the Academy’s Investment Committee. In the coming years, we are hopeful for significant growth in the endowment to support the new facilities envisioned in the Campus Master Plan. The 2016-2017 year focused on the restoration of the Mansion exterior, the addition of the Godfrey Road entrance, and renovations to the Connelly Arts Center. The Cuvilly Gym was upgraded through a generous donation. The design and planning of the STEM Center is ongoing as we continue to implement Phase II of the Campus Master Plan. Student experience on campus was enhanced with the implementation of the 1:1 MacBook Program for the middle school. We are thrilled that we are able to expand the 1:1 MacBook Program for the high school at the start of the 2017-2018 academic year. During the summer of 2017, we renovated the airport lounge as part of the ongoing facility maintenance. This gathering space will now be called Cuvilly Lounge.

I would like to thank the members of the Finance, Investment and Facilities Committees for their valuable time and guidance provided throughout the year. I have previously worked in public accounting and have overseen the Academy’s financial audit since 2001. I am proud to be part of the business office, honored to be part of the school community and I look forward to carrying out the Strategic Vision of the Academy.

ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT REPORT I am pleased to present the 2016-2017 academic year highlights of our efforts to recruit, admit, and enroll the most talented students to our school. It has been a busy year in the Office of Enrollment Management. Last fall, we welcomed a total of 538 students from throughout the region, representing a 4.6% increase in whole-school enrollment since 2013. Today, I am proud to report that enrollment at the Academy remains strong. This fall, more than 57 new students and 47 advancing Notre Dame eighth graders will enter our high school, and more than 45 new students will enter the middle school. One significant trend we have experienced is an increase in transfer student interest to the Academy for Grades 7, 8, and 10. In addition, we continue to see growth in visit requests from families, with higher numbers of both “shadow day” visitors and special event registrants and attendees. Families continue to cite the quality of our academic programs, the strategic vision for our beautiful campus, and the character and strength of our community as major factors in their decision to enroll. There is much to celebrate in terms of interest in Notre Dame. Some of the key projects over the past year include development of new enrollment and financial aid timelines and a new enrollment website portal. During the coming year, we will continue to implement technology that will allow us to modernize processes, gain important efficiencies in our day to day operations, and improve the online experience for prospective families.

Additionally, our office is pleased to announce new merit scholarship opportunities for applicants in the areas of STEM, global citizenship, dance, music, and visual arts. Complementing these opportunities, we are perhaps most proud to designate new “Saint Julie Awards” for applicants who embody the charism of Saint Julie Billiart and demonstrate exceptional character, leadership, and service to their school and communities. Finally, we would not be successful without the support and collaboration of nearly every department on campus. Our outreach is always aided by our dedicated Notre Dame families, alumnae, faculty, and staff who give so generously of their time and talents to help us further our mission. “Word of mouth” is our strongest form of marketing, and we truly appreciate the assistance you provide in spreading the word about Notre Dame. It will be our privilege to continue to provide the families we serve with care and attention as they learn about the benefits of joining this unique and special community.

ADVANCEMENT OFFICE REPORT The outstanding educational experience the Academy of Notre Dame provides our young women each year would not be possible without the generous support of alumnae, parents and friends. Goal Six of our Strategic Vision, OUR TIME to INSPIRE, calls us to create a culture of engagement and support. Thanks to the generosity of hundreds of members of our community who offered gifts of time, talent, and treasure, we made strong progress toward achieving that goal in this last fiscal year. Highlights of the year include: • The Notre Dame Fund is the foundation of our advancement program and our number one fundraising priority. Because tuition only covers 82% of the cost of educating our students, unrestricted contributions from alumnae, parents and friends are critically important in making up that difference. We are pleased to report that a record $581,000 was raised this year with 164 new donors. The Notre Dame Fund Leadership Committee, led by Lee Allman P’17 and Andrea Shank ’90 P’20’22, was instrumental to our success. • Opportunities for meaningful alumnae engagement expanded with the establishment of a Boston Chapter of the President’s Advisory Council, growth of the Career Exploration Program, initiation of an Alumnae Class Agent Program, and inaugural alumnae events in Los Angeles and San Francisco. An online alumnae directory was created to allow alumnae to easily update their contact information, network with fellow professional alumnae, locate alumnae living in a specific city or state, and reconnect with classmates. • Parents, alumnae and friends of the Academy enjoyed time together and raised funds in support of the school at this year’s Golf Classic in September and BLAST auction in March. Thank you to our Co-Chairs Lynn Bruder ’80 P’08’17 and Colleen Tegler P’20 (BLAST) and Michael and Lisa Irvine P’17 and Patrick & Kristen Traynor P’18 (Golf Classic) and their hardworking committees. • Our fabulous Parents’ Association, led by Alisa Czachor P’16’21, coordinated numerous community-building events throughout the school year and generously donated $90,000 to the school in May at our Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. We are grateful to the dozens of parents who volunteered their time, chaired committees, or served as Class Parents.

• Since the fall of 2013, more than $15.5 million has been raised in the comprehensive OUR TIME to INSPIRE Campaign, including Phase I, Phase II, annual fund and EITC/OSTC commitments. We are inspired by this tremendous endorsement of the Academy’s vision and future. Fundraising for Phase II of the effort, which includes full exterior and interior restoration of the Mansion and the construction of the Center for STEM Education, will continue in earnest in the coming year. Please continue to share feedback and suggestions as we strive to strengthen our advancement efforts in support of current and future generations of Notre Dame women. With sincere appreciation,

Paige Peters LeGrand Director of Advancement

Donor PROFILE Diane and Pat Croce P’97 GP’24 As parents of an alumna (Kelly Croce Sorg ’97) and now grandparents of an incoming 6th grader, your connection with Notre Dame spans many years. In your opinion, how does the Academy of Notre Dame differentiate itself from other schools? Kelly graduated from Notre Dame in 1997 with an incredible sense of confidence, a strong foundation of knowledge, and enduring friendships with classmates and teachers. She developed grace, a strong moral compass, and the importance of her role in not only local community but also global community at Notre Dame. The beautiful campus, commitment to spiritual awakening and the unparalleled sense of humanity and acceptance also differentiate the Academy. You have generously supported the OUR TIME to INSPIRE Campaign and specifically the restoration of the Rose Garden as part of the new Center for STEM Education. What motivated your support? In recent years, we have watched the Academy grow and strengthen under the leadership of Dr. Judith Dwyer and the Board of Trustees. Kelly has been very involved as an alumna and her enthusiasm for the future of the school is contagious. Now, with our granddaughter Pascale beginning her Notre Dame tenure, we felt inspired to make leadership commitment to help ensure this ambitious vision for the future of the Academy becomes a reality.

Why is the Rose Garden in particular meaningful? Our family believes strongly in the power of Presence and Mindfulness. We feel it is critical for young women to be exposed to this state of being and have the opportunity and the sacred space to practice. We were so pleased that the plans for the STEM Center call for integration with the Rose Garden as a core element in the building. Restoring the beautiful Grotto and ensuring ample outdoor contemplative open space on campus was appealing to us. With our donation, we are pleased to honor Pat’s aunt, Sister Corinne Ritchie, RSM, who passed away in May and embodied many of the characteristics Notre Dame inspires in young women — curiosity, truth, loving kindness and a sense of humor. She dedicated her life to Catholic education and the development of young people as longtime principal of St. Margaret School in Narberth. Diane and Pat Croce are parents of Kelly Croce Sorg ’97 and grandparents of incoming 6th grader Pascale Sorg ’24. Kelly Sorg is a member of the OUR TIME to INSPIRE Campaign Alumnae Executive Committee and the Villanova Chapter of the President’s Advisory Council.

Donor PROFILE Bob and Phyllis Downs Hart ’85 P’16’22’23 Notre Dame is blessed to have had multiple women in the Downs family attend Notre Dame. Can you share your family's Notre Dame legacy? I am one of seven sisters who graduated from the Academy of Notre Dame between 1985 and 2008. I have three aunts and three cousins who are also alumnae, and four daughters of my own at various stages in their Notre Dame relationship: Audrey started in 2009 and graduated in 2016, Jillian and Sabrina are currently in the middle school, and Scarlett will enroll in 2019. With the exception of one year, my mother has had a daughter or granddaughter enrolled at Notre Dame every year since 1981. That’s a long time! Why did you choose Notre Dame for your daughters? To be able to share Notre Dame with my daughters is a blessing and a gift for me. Notre Dame is everything we could ask for in terms of cultivating our daughters into strong, independent thinkers with empathetic hearts. What were the most important lessons you, Phyllis, learned while a student at Notre Dame? Beyond the formal education, the Honor Code has made a significant and sustaining impact on how I conduct myself in life and in business. I also learned a great deal about friendship!

What inspires your family to support Notre Dame as volunteers and donors? The Sisters of Notre Dame, the vision of Saint Julie, the warmth of the teachers, and their desire to see the girls excel and succeed inspires our family to support the Academy. We are both eager to ensure that our daughters, and future generations of women, benefit from the exceptional education Notre Dame provides.

A longtime involved alumna and parent, Phyllis has most recently served as a volunteer on the BLAST Committee. Bob serves as a member of the Villanova Chapter of the President’s Advisory Council.

Donor PROFILE Christina Kelly ’94 What do you hope to bring to your role as a member of the President’s Advisory Council? The President’s Advisory Council exemplifies all that is great about Notre Dame. The members are intelligent and well-spoken. They bring a diversity and complexity of perspective to conversations about the future of Notre Dame. I consider it an honor to be among them. I try to focus on the concept of integration in philosophy, curriculum, and facilities. So many subject areas are interdisciplinary. They each benefit from one another and together they thrive; e.g., art and technology. The past is an intricate part of the future. One does not overshadow and impede the other. You have generously supported the OUR TIME to INSPIRE Campaign and also donate to The Notre Dame Fund. What motivates your support? As a mentor and ESL teacher, I became discouraged by what I believed was inequality in education. Many talented girls, even with financial aid, could not afford a private education and were, therefore, locked out of the advantages that education provides. My husband and I believe that everyone benefits from a more diverse student body. We also believe that the world is not going to change itself; we have to get out there and create opportunities for change. We support OUR TIME to INSPIRE because the Campaign includes renovating the Mansion. The Mansion will serve as an intellectual and interdisciplinary hub for the global Notre Dame community.

What skills should every young woman leave Notre Dame possessing? Be open to learning. There is so much knowledge available; soak it up! There are so many opportunities for those who continuously educate themselves. Be articulate. Your ideas are valuable and the world needs to hear you. Be brave. Why do you feel it is important for alumnae to remain engaged with Notre Dame as volunteers and donors? To remain engaged is to have your voice heard and counted. Why be silent? To speak, act, and remain engaged is to impact the future of Notre Dame and the future of its young women. How amazing is that! Christina Kelly '94 studied Russian, French, and Arabic at Fordham University, and then International Law at Pace University, working her way through school as a Derivatives Trading Assistant on the floor of the American Stock Exchange. She has served on the New York City area chapter of Notre Dame’s President's Advisory Council since 2015.

Donor PROFILE Margarete Landwehr ’75 Why have you decided to include the Academy of Notre Dame in your estate plans? My years at Notre Dame served not only as a springboard for an academic career that led me to Georgetown and Harvard Universities, but also helped to prepare me for life by instilling in me values that I learned not only in our class discussions, but also in the kindness of my teachers. What do you intend your bequest to provide for future Notre Dame students? I want my bequest to provide scholarships for future students so that they may have access to the same high-quality education that I had. The Academy offered me a full scholarship where I benefitted from tutorials in Spanish with Mrs. Alonso, a Cuban refugee, and with Sister Mary Augusta, SND, my French teacher. Including students from more modest backgrounds at Notre Dame contributes to the diversity of the student population and adds to the richness of the educational experience for everyone. Learning that there are many ways of viewing and dealing with life’s challenges opens one to new perspectives and expands one’s capacity for empathy.

Now it is time for me to give back what the Academy of Notre Dame has given me. In my own small way, I know that I am not only helping those in need to have a better life, but also, by enabling some young women to attain a high quality education, they, in turn, can potentially improve society through their careers. Including the Academy in my estate plans will become the legacy that completes the circle of my life. Margarete Landwehr is a Professor of German and German Program Coordinator, Department of Languages and Cultures at West Chester University.

What advice do you have for other alumnae considering a planned gift? I have pondered over what my legacy will be, not only to those in my intimate circle of family and friends, but also to future generations. After long consideration, I’ve decided that my values are the most important aspect of myself that I would like to pass on. As a teacher, I know that education is the best way to share those values. Notre Dame shapes the minds and contributes to the values of young women in their formative years.
