Fine Art Show & Sale

It is my pleasure to welcome you to an exciting milestone event for the Academy of Notre Dame — our 50th Annual Fine Art Show & Sale! Thank you to Chairs Christa Amos P’20’23 and Kelly Sweeney P’24’26, members of the committee, and our community of dedicated volunteers who have been working tirelessly on this year’s event and to honor the 50year legacy of the Fine Art Show & Sale. With lessons learned from the Virtual Art Shows in 2021 and 2022, this year’s event will continue to feature our convenient virtual platform while showcasing stunning original artwork in the Mansion. The combination of leadership, creativity, and dedication have come together to create an inspiring event for our guests, sponsors, and local community.

We extend our gratitude to our generous sponsors who help make this event possible through their financial support. In addition, this show has a rich tradition supported by many volunteers, who spend countless hours behind the scenes to make this show a reality. Finally, our guests are a critical part of this show as the artists exhibit their outstanding work. We are deeply grateful for the ongoing commitment of all participants.

For five decades, we have welcomed many local artists to our show — artists who have previously participated as well as those who are new — and we are honored to spotlight the artists collective as this year’s featured artists. The Fine Art Show & Sale truly brings together our community for a week of celebrating the arts, all in support of the students, faculty, and program here at Notre Dame.

I look forward to welcoming you to campus to view the outstanding show and to support our school with funds raised. I am confident that the 50th Annual Fine Art Show & Sale will be a tremendous success. Congratulations on 50 years!

Fine Art Show & Sale

It is going to be a Golden Year! The Academy of Notre Dame de Namur and the Art Show Committee is honored to be hosting the 50th Annual Fine Art Show & Sale. On the Golden Anniversary of this splendid event, we are excited about the return of the show to the historic Mansion on the campus of Notre Dame. With the installation of over 1000 pieces of artwork adorning the walls and surfaces of this beautiful building, we welcome our new and returning families and friends, patrons, sponsors and artists. We are so very happy to celebrate, with you, the show’s 50 years of fine art, service and community.

We would like to take this opportunity to recognize the individuals who have made this event possible. The 50th Annual Art Show committee is composed of many parent volunteers committed to maintaining this beloved Notre Dame Tradition. For many current families and committee members, this will be the first experience of the in-person show. Nonetheless, under the guidance and commitment of our talented returning art committee members and the creative synergy of the entire team, the 50th Annual Fine Art Show & Sale is set up to be a historic and memorable event for the entire Notre Dame Community.

The art committee celebrates the partnership and support from our Head of School, Dr. Laura Hotchkiss, the entire administration, faculty, staff, students, and members of our Alumni Association and Parents’ Association.

And to our sponsors, artists, and community partners, we would like to thank you. Your gifts of time, talent, and treasure help make this event successful in supporting the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur and the many programs that enrich our students’ academic experience.

Fine Art Show & Sale

A Brief History

In 1973, the Academy of Notre Dame Annual Fine Art Show & Sale was founded by a group of dedicated ND parents, faculty and nuns who were searching for a way to increase funding to support the school’s growing community as well as to diversify the student experience and enhance art appreciation and cultural opportunities.

The show has evolved over the past 50 years to become one of the premier fine art events in the tri-state region. With participation from over 100 regional professional fine artists, the collection annually showcases diverse, masterful, and innovative 2D and 3D works of exceptional quality. ND community members and local visitors enjoy selecting artworks created in oil, acrylic, watercolor, ink, wood, glass, metal and more. Art comes in all sizes and genres allowing the perfect find to beautify any home.

Galleries of these beautiful works are housed in the historic mansion on the campus of the Academy - offering an art experience like no other. The art presence continues to provide a rich cultural experience for the students offering critical thinking and discussion opportunities that are threaded into their current curriculum.

Questions?

Annually, the show opens with a Preview Party that celebrates a partnership between the Notre Dame Administration, Faculty, Parents Association, Art Committee members, parents, volunteers and the exhibiting artists, all in support of our students’ ND experience. All are invited to enjoy this unique art encounter that has become a long standing and valued Notre Dame tradition.

TESTIMONIAL: “It has always been an honor to participate in this show. The quality of artwork is always very high, so to be featured is a special compliment. It’s been a pleasure to be a part of this community over the years, getting to know families all while feeling very appreciated for our talents! I am always amazed by the accommodating, organized moms and the bright young ladies we support.”

BIO: I received my BFA in Illustration from Rhode Island School of Design. From an early age, I knew I wanted to be a fine arts painter, creating art to brighten private or public spaces. Over the years, I have pursued desirable galleries and shows while continuing to create custom paintings for clients. I have been honored to win many awards and earn invitations to be the featured artist at various events. I began a professional career painting detailed watercolor, primarily beach scenes. Eventually my style evolved to create bigger, bolder acrylic paintings, and I desired to explore a vast array of subjects. I have always loved to paint beaches, vacation destinations, water, anything brightly colored and bright sun and interesting shadows. •••

Genevieve Snyder

FEATURED ARTIST 2012 & 2023

TESTIMONIAL: “There are a lot of talented individuals that participate in the Notre Dame Art Show every year, so to be chosen as featured artist is an honor.”

BIO: Genevieve was born and raised in Chester County, PA, where she and her husband still reside. From childhood, she found joy in painting and drawing. Graduating with a degree in Communications and Design, Genevieve went to work in television set design. While working in that industry, she continued to explore painting for pleasure, but the hobby eventually consumed her. In 2005, she left TV to pursue a career as a fine artist. Since that time, her award-winning paintings have been on display at juried and invitational shows. Her work has been used for cards, posters, magazine covers and a calendar. When not working on commission pieces, Genevieve finds inspiration in the relationship between man, animal and nature. This curiosity has led to a large body of work focused on sporting art, primarily fox hunting. Her work, though, is not exclusively this genre and she willingly explores any subject that catches her eye.

At the ND Art Show, the connection with the audience is direct and familiar. I was able to speak to a variety of both art collectors and school supporters about my work in a lively, lovely environment.”

BIO: Susan has been a working artist for more than 25 years. She was trained in Fine Arts and English Literature, graduating with a B.A. from St. Joseph’s University followed by post-graduate study at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Susan’s flair for seeing the usual in unusual ways and her love of fine arts has followed her both through her career, in computer graphics, logo design, illustration, as an art teacher and as a commissioned artist. Susan’s paintings span a range between extreme detail and whimsy, with a special focus on how light turns everyday images into emotional vistas. She continues to accept commissioned work, but with an effort to pursue a personal vision. Susan is represented by F.A.N Gallery in Philadelphia. •••

Liz Finley

TESTIMONIAL: “As a featured artist, the ND Art Show gave me the opportunity to offer an exciting, coordinated body of work. I chose to display several scenes of Philadelphia, including Schuylkill River scenes, that I really enjoyed painting. The Preview Party show opening is always a great place to catch up with old friends and meet new artists or Notre Dame enthusiasts. The ND Art Show is a special, unique social event for the school, and I look forward to seeing the mansion walls draped in gorgeous color again this year.”

BIO: Liz is a long-time participant in the Notre Dame Academy Art Show, and mother of a graduate. She most often paints ocean and beach scenes, local landscapes and golf scenes. Liz participates in other local shows and recently started an Art Consulting business, "FinleyPeck Art Consulting" with her partner, Janice Peck, to help people find original art they love for their homes or offices. A student at Wayne Art Center and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Liz devotes her painting time to capturing beauty in nature by experimenting with tried techniques and more contemporary approaches. Lively brushwork and exciting color combinations are the hallmark of her work. Liz traveled to southern France this summer to paint en Plein Air in various towns in the historic Dordogne region with local artist and coordinator, Elaine Lisle. Several paintings in this year’s show are from that trip and a side trip to Paris. •••

FEATURED ARTIST 2018 & 2023

TESTIMONIAL: “Being selected as a Featured Artist was and is a great honor that brings me tremendous joy. A highlight during my time as Featured Artist in 2018, was the opportunity to connect with Notre Dame AP Art students via an interactive discussion. It was wonderful to gain insight into their ideas, inspirations and techniques. The experience helped to pique my own curiosity, a quality that serves artists greatly.”

BIO: Rachel received her BA in Fine Arts from Penn State University. During her time at Penn State, she spent a semester in Rome studying painting and art history as a student in Tyler School of Art’s Temple Rome Program. After a hiatus from painting, and 18 productive years building a career in the corporate world, she realized her need to foster her passion and mature and expand her techniques, so she left that world behind to focus full-time on her art. Rachel’s work is rich with vibrant color, energy, and movement, and is most influenced by the stunning colors and shapes found in water, shells, botanicals and natural surroundings of some of her favorite destinations.

Shawn Faust

FEATURED ARTIST 2019 & 2023

TESTIMONIAL: “One of the fondest memories I have of the show is when I had the opportunity to tour the Academy’s art department and speak to the art students on the morning of the show’s opening. I was very impressed with the diversity of mediums, techniques and processes the students were exploring, as well as the spacious and beautiful Connelly Arts Center. Equally admirable, was how respectful, energetic and engaging the students were in our discussions. So as an art instructor myself, it is very rewarding to see that kind of passion for creativity at a high school level. All of which, remind me of how blessed I am, to know that my work is contributing to the continued support of nurturing strong, independent, innovative and creative young women at the Academy of Notre Dame.”

BIO: Shawn is a classically trained artist who explores his subject matter by mining his sensorial experience with nature. Diverging his traditional sensibilities rooted in classical realism, Faust employs the vitality and physical application of color as the life-giving force to his paintings. His work emerges from his environmental relationships and stand as a testament to his ecological reverence. Collaborating his training in portraiture with his exploration in abstract expressionism, Faust seeks to harness the stamina of color and gesture to elucidate forms as metaphors and proxies for human and nature reciprocity. Faust is a founding member of the Portrait Society of America and a Signature member of the American Academy of Equine Art as well as an Associate member of OPA. His work hangs in the permanent collection of the National Museum of China, the National Museum of Horse Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga, NY and the Daughters of the American Revolution Museum in Washington, DC.Faust earned his MFA from the University of The Arts and a BFA from the University of Delaware. •••

Rachel Altschuler

Rachel developed a love for nature at an early age. Growing up in such bucolic surroundings provided not only a haven, but eventual inspiration for her art. Rachel is best known for her whimsical and sometimes mysterious paintings of birds that challenge the traditions of portraiture and question the ethereal beliefs that connect humans and animals. Often painted at large scale, Rachel pays close attention to detail in the eyes, while simultaneously utilizing bold color and purposeful brushstrokes. Her ability to create such powerful human connections to her work has garnered her attention on a global level. Rachel’s work has been selected for multiple national and international juried exhibitions and displayed in public and private collections around the world. Beth Bathe

From Lancaster PA, Beth’s representational paintings have been described by art critics as “Evoking nostalgia, like that of an old sepia toned photograph, often with just touches of color.” Curiosity about the medium Beth works is often the first question of many viewers. Is it watercolor, is it oil? Beth’s answer: “Somewhat both.” She works with Water Mixable Oil Colors in a limited palette, using brushes and unconventional tools. Beth crisscrosses the country painting en plein air and participates in over ten high-profile juried and invitation national competitions a year. She loves the travel and catching up with her artist friends who are often compared to “carnies” traveling from competition to competition. Beth was a featured artist in the 2018 February/March issue of PleinAir Magazine and in the Dec/Jan 2021 issue in an article about water mixable oil paints. •••

Elise Bond

In the early 2000’s, Elisa was the owner of a successful mural company and is now a full-time artist showing her work on both coasts. She has recently been focused on painting various Women in the Arts, initially inspired by the vintage glamour of the 1920’s. She created sepia-toned portraits juxtaposed against colorful wallpapered backgrounds and has evolved to adorning her subjects with "crowns" and creatures, implementing her love of nature. "Throughout the history of art there has been a glaring absence of female artists. Women remain dramatically underrepresented in the art world. My objective is to raise awareness of women in the arts and to celebrate their lives and achievements. This process has been a very personal journey of discovery for me. In researching the challenges that have shaped these women, I have found that there is a little bit of each of their stories that resonates with me as a female artist.”

Jessica has enjoyed creating in clay from her first clay-camp experience at age nine. Currently she resides in West Chester, Pennsylvania working as a studio potter and ceramics educator. She received a BFA in Related Arts from Kutztown University, where she began her journey at the potters wheel. This is also where she discovered her love of a woodfired surface. The ancient process of stoking a wood fire as the flames lick past the pots surface has captivated her ever since. Jessica is drawn to simple forms with luscious, or intricate surface decoration. She finds joy in creating ceramic pieces of art that get used each day in the home, as well as special occasions with friends and family. Her years of experience in clay have taught her that form plucked from experience is more important to her than novelty of concept. Stretching and altering the clay surface provides an endless variety of form.

My artistry reflects a quiet rebellion against literal reality while remaining grounded in an appreciation for the beauty contained in our everyday environment. I strive to capture light in its various phases, to present subjects and detail with a looseness and freedom that do not violate the integrity of those elements. For most of my work I choose the forcefulness of a knife rather than a brush stroke to apply my palette, to create a tactile, textural painting that the viewer is free to touch, enter and be part of. I paint to share a vision with the viewer of the uncommon in the common, eliminating the unnecessary elements that distract, a wabi-sabi approach to art. A sense of serene melancholy and a spiritual longing. ••• FACEBOOK: maryholtonart

Fred Jackson*

As a plein air painter, I am most inspired by the felt moods that the natural and cultural landscapes evoke. My application of paint and compositions are a response to my perception of a place; to what I find interesting. My painting process is not formulaic. I prefer to work intuitively and improvisational with no predetermined result in mind. I seek to express in paint the rich nuances and energy that a place presents within this moment. The struggle of searching for that elusive balance between observation, perceptive mood, and design keeps me engaged and challenged. Often it is the paintings which I have battled the hardest, destroyed and resurrected that become the most interesting.

George retired from the porcelain business in 2003 as the Senior Director of Sculpture for the Franklin Mint. Since 2004, he has pursued his passion for sculpture creating work in his own studio. Although he studied and produced work almost exclusively in high-fired porcelain and will always love the way white, translucent porcelain reflects light, particularly with portraits and the human form, he now feels that bronze is the perfect material for most of his current work. George is a member of the National Sculpture Society, the Society of Animal Artists and the Philadelphia Sketch Club. He has exhibited his award-winning pieces across the United States and abroad.

Stephanie Molnar

Creating paintings that emotionally impact the viewer and transform a space is Stephanie’s passion. Steph graduated with a degree in Interior Design, which provides a backdrop of study in color, design, style and art. Decades as a freelance artist, draftswoman, and marketing/advertising executive help fuel her artistic perspective. The quest to paint whatever strikes her fancy has become an obsession... which usually consists of peonies and ethereal landscapes. On this painting journey, born from work with a palette knife and a love for texture, she fixates on varying her painting technique and application, usually representing content in a slightly abstracted way.

Andrea Moran

I currently live in Wayne, PA and am originally from Moorestown, NJ. As a child, I spent most of my time drawing and painting or running around a field. I received my BA in Government and Studio Art from Dartmouth College where I played field hockey and lacrosse. Life has fun twists and turns, and while I focused on a career as a creative in the marketing world and received an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management, I never stopped drawing and painting. I am inspired by color, symmetry, and a touch of whimsy. I love the joy that art brings to a home - from pen and ink to watercolors and oils, I work in every medium! While I don’t actively market my work, I am proud to be a part of the Serena & Lily artist community in 2022. •••

Albert Moretti

I am a painting jazz musician, trumpeter and composer. When I paint, I think of sound, and when I play music, I think of colors. Rhythm, harmony, articulation, dynamics, and phrasing become part of my creative decisions. I use my music composition process to inspire my painting subjects and style. This connection energizes me to create thru a more conceptional process. All colors can be associated with their tonal equivalents. Using these tones, language, theory, form, and emotional passion of music allows me to go from what I know to what is new. Music and art continuously intersect in my mind. Though my musical and artistic accomplishments stretch back to the 1970’s, I am creating exciting new works in acrylic medium; painting musical icons and themes that have influenced my life and career.

Terri Morse

Color has always been a focus in Terri’s paintings so brighter color, the ability to add a variety of textures and being able to frame paintings without glass led to learning to use acrylics on panels. Workshop exercises led to more playful pieces that are largely based on imagination and more abstract concepts. Combining genres, exploring new subjects and continually experimenting with different materials fuels the joy she hopes to convey in her paintings. Terri is a signature member of the Philadelphia Water Color Society, Pennsylvania Watercolor Society and Baltimore Watercolor Society. Recent shows include the Philadelphia Water Color Society International Juried Exhibit, Pennsylvania Watercolor Society’s International Juried Exhibition, Baltimore Watercolor Society’s MidAtlantic Regional Exhibition, Malvern Retreat House and Historic Yellow Springs Art Show, Chester County Studio Tour and ACT International Exhibition.

Being a volunteer for the ND Art Show has also allowed us to witness this experience in action - to meet the girls, beautify their Mansion, and enhance their appreciation and curiosity for the visual arts. We find this fundamental outcome the most rewarding. Thank you to everyone who supports this beloved Notre Dame Tradition.”

Past Chair Testimonial - The Early Years

Patricia Morris: “I remember my time working as Chair of the Art Show fondly. It was a tremendous amount of work and for many of us volunteers, it was a world not necessarily familiar to us! The year that I was Chair, we decided to partner with Sister Helen David Brancata (IHM) who was teaching art at a community center in West Philadelphia. We wanted her artists to contribute pieces to the show that year, in addition to those artists who had been involved in the show for years. It was so exciting to see artists who never publicly showed their work before come to the Preview Party, see their pieces displayed on the walls of the Mansion, and sell many of their works throughout the run of the show. I love that the Notre Dame Fine Art Show and Sale can inspire a lifelong appreciation of art in people who, like many of us, had limited knowledge of the art world, and also provide opportunity for so many talented artists to showcase their works.”

Past Chair and Artist Search Chair Testimonial

Denick Herrin P’18’23’26: “I’ll always remember when my husband, Charlie, and I walked through the doors at our first Preview Party - the Mansion’s transformation was nothing short of magical. Being part of one of the premier art shows on the Main Line has been a highlight of my last ten years. As a past chair of the event and current chair of the artist search committee, I’ve had the privilege of interfacing and interacting with our regional artist community as well as creating lasting friendships with many ND parents who have dedicated their time through the years. I am so excited to experience the 50th anniversary show with the ND community, especially our students, and share the event with friends and family. After two years virtual, I have no doubt that the in-person galleries will again captivate and enthrall all visitors to the show.” Artist Search Chair ’20, ’21, ’22, ’23 Art Show Chair ’16, ’17, ’18, ’19

Alumnae Testimonial

Mary Beth Hepner: “The Art Show was always a highlight of my time at Notre Dame. It came at the perfect time of year to brighten up those cold, late January days. I loved walking to class in the Mansion and seeing all of the amazing pieces hanging on the walls and sculptures carefully placed in the halls. The Mansion always seemed like the perfect setting to showcase the various mediums of these very talented artists. We had our own private museum to walk through each day, knowing that the next year, there would be a brand new exhibit to view. I had no artistic ability or background, but that did not matter at all, and I look forward to returning to the Preview Party every year now to see what piece I can purchase to keep those memories alive in my home today.”

Sponsor Testimonial

Crissy and Andy Pyfer: “It is always an honor for our family to support The ND Art Show at the sponsorship level each year. The preview party in the Mansion was one of the first events we attended as members of the ND community, and we will always remember it as such a warm and welcoming event. The Art Show not only brings the ND community together, but also supports local artists and entrepreneurs. It’s very meaningful to purchase an original piece of art from the show, and each time you look at it, be reminded of the very special ND community that we are blessed to be a part of. We love supporting ND through the Art Show and are looking forward to the 50th!”

Patron Testimonial

Jody Warren: “My introduction to the Notre Dame Art Show was through a friend who invited me to attend the Preview Party. Initially, I was most intrigued by the opportunity to get an eagle’s eye peek into what I feel is one of the most beautiful buildings on the Main Line. Once I saw my first show however, I was hooked on the impressive collection on display in the Mansion. Having studied Art History, art appreciation has always been very important to me but not something I sought out while busy raising 3 children. Not only is the Notre Dame Art Show a great introduction to art in terms of price point, genres, and styles, the fact that it’s in our backyard makes the act of collecting more approachable. In my design business, I often send clients to the show so they can get their hands on "real art" to showcase in their home even if they initially feel "real art" is out of their reach. One of the things that really struck me while attending the Preview Party was that many of the artists are regular people in our community, perhaps even neighbors or your friend at the gym. I love having that local touchpoint in my collections and it’s one of the many reasons I keep coming back to the Show year after year.”

Artist New to the Show Testimonial

Cynthia Oswald: “Being able to show my work alongside artists I admire, in a beautiful setting, for an educational cause is something I feel fortunate to be a part of. I’m especially excited to be a part of such a big year for the show—celebrating 50 successful years! Personally, original art is such a special part of my world. Both the work I’ve collected from other artists and the pieces that I’ve been bringing to life over the last few years have shown me the transformative power of art in our spaces. I’m excited to experience this year’s collection of work!”

ND Art Teacher Testimonial

Kate Rupertus '93: “Every year during ND art show time my students get super excited! They love to watch our mansion spaces transform from the simple cream plaster and wood paneled walls of the mansion to literally overflowing with color and filled to capacity with vibrant artwork. As an art teacher, I love this opportunity to bring my students to view the art and wander through noticing all the concepts we have been talking about in class such as composition, shading, background space etc. I usually have them journal about what they are seeing and pick out a few pieces that especially resonate. We then present these pieces to our classmates trying to pinpoint what it is that the artist has done that we feel worked especially well. I also love to point out to my students the hanging art of my ND art student alumni and artist parents from within our community so my students see that this can be them. We also have an exhibiting artist from the show come speak with our Art 3 and AP Art students to share with them their process, experiences, and art journey. This exhibition helps me show my students that art can be a part of their life beyond our classrooms and the gates of ND.”

Alumnae Testimonial

Colleen Hutchinson ’92: “Now that my daughter Alexis is a student at Notre Dame, I love participating as a parent in the same volunteer efforts my mom loved volunteering for during my years there. The Art Show is particularly special to us as a family, since my grandmother, Mary Anne McGovern, graduated Notre Dame in 1937 with a love of art that she built upon when she went to college. She was an artist herself, an active alum who cherished her ND family, and a true patron of the arts with a special appreciation for our annual art show.

This year, from her estate we donated a watercolor of Notre Dame at Rittenhouse that she had commissioned from a Philadelphia artist in the late 60s. Knowing the building on the Square was to shortly be sold, she asked a local artist exhibiting at the open air Rittenhouse Square Fine Art Show (now 95 years running!) to paint the school while it was still there to be captured. As we now celebrate the 50th year of the Notre Dame Fine Art Show & Sale, my grandmother’s effort and its timing almost a half century ago feels special. I am thankful to be a part of its planning, and to witness the event chairs’ dedicated efforts to honor our school history and heritage at this event.”

Young Alumnae Testimonial

Sophia Amos ’20: “As a 2020 Notre Dame graduate, I had the opportunity to experience the last few years of the Art Show pre-pandemic. During those years, I remember the excitement that led up to the art show and the magic that filled the room once all of the art wrapped around the mansion walls. I was a volunteer for the Preview Party and also was lucky enough to have my own artwork hung up in the student artwork section. The beauty of the art show is that it brings a universal appreciation towards the arts that can be shared with the entire ND community regardless of one’s knowledge or experience with fine arts. I remember walking to French class every day during the month of January and being amazed at the talent and creativity that we had the honor to show through our beautiful mansion, and wondering if I would be lucky enough to one day be an exhibiting artist. Being so closely connected with the show during my time at ND, brought a sense of hope for how I could be involved as a graduate. Since graduating, being a member of the committee has been one of the most impactful ways I have maintained my relationship with not only the arts but my alma mater.”
