INTRODUCTION

Dear Students, We welcome all of you today to your Graduation. Thank you for making the journey to celebrate this momentous occasion with us here at Trentham Gardens. Graduation is a very special occasion for students, symbolising the completion of years of study. So today, we applaud all of your hard work and commitment that have led to this great achievement and fantastic results. Throughout your time at the NDA, we have seen you progress through enthusiasm and dedication to complete your degree. The directors, tutors and everyone at the National Design Academy would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you all on this wonderful accomplishment and wish you all the best for your future. Enjoy the celebrations! The NDA Team

NEWS ROUND-UP 2018 - 2019

Since Graduation in 2018, the past year for the NDA has been one of progression and a year of building on what we do best; delivering informative and industry-led courses to our students. Through our academic partnership with Staffordshire University, we have witnessed the graduation of a huge number of students; each one ready to pursue their personal ambitions in industry or higher-level study. The range of students each year continues to show our global representation. We have welcomed students from 18 different countries to celebrate with us, from as far as the Philippines, Denmark, Qatar, Malaysia, India, Botswana, Hong Kong and Saudi Arabia. This year is no different, as we have students from France, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, the UAE, USA, Malaysia, Canada, Croatia, and Poland who graduate as part of the class of 2019. Our national representation also continues to thrive with students from Bristol, Nottingham, Brighton and the Isle of Wight to name a few. It is great to see such a diverse collection of students all completing our design courses and shows how far reaching interior design as a subject is. The expansion of the NDA continues to grow abroad as well as in the UK. The tutor team has certainly expanded to accommodate our growing student body and subjects. In Dubai, our NDA office now delivers in-studio Diploma courses which provide students located within the UAE, the opportunity to experience our courses previously only available in the UK.

We are delighted to share this graduation day with our students and colleagues of the National Motorsport Academy. This is another arm of the Academy which has expanded the breadth of what we offer in a completely different area of study. Last year we witnessed the first cohort of graduates qualifying with an FdSc or BSc in Motorsport Engineering. This year, we launched the world’s first online MSc in Advanced Motorsport Engineering. We continue to build on our industry links which benefit our staff and provide our students with the opportunity to supplement their studies. In September 2019, we were fortunate to have Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director for Dulux, introduce the NDA team to the new Dulux ‘Colour of the Year’ in anticipation of its world-wide release. Our continuing partnership with Marianne means that our staff and students are provided with the latest, exclusive industry news before release to the public. For the fourth year running, the NDA Design Blog was nominated in the ‘Best Company Blog’ category for the Amara Interior Design Blog Awards. This prestigious nomination reflects the quality of industry knowledge that our Tutor team provide to current, ex, and prospective students and highlights the important relationship we have with industry representatives. In addition the NDA continues to develop our courses by refreshing module content and visual appeal as well as expanding our interactive components and video footage which supplement our students’ online experience.

The most important aspect of our year, is to see the continuing success of our students. In October 2018, NDA Interior Design student, Zoe Perks, entered and won the ‘Best Interior Room Set’ at Grand Designs Live 2018, held at the Birmingham NEC. Since gaining her Diploma with us, Zoe has gone on to start her own business ‘Beautiful Rooms by Zoe’, which she proudly runs by herself. No big team or studio, just Zoe and her passionate hard work. The same can be said of many of our students, setting up their own businesses that build on their passion and design skills enhanced by their studies at NDA. With another successful year behind us, we look forward to seeing what 2019 - 2020 has to offer. The NDA alongside Staffordshire University congratulate all our students on this special day. Well done to you all.

INTRODUCTION FOR NOMINATED STUDENTS This academic year has seen a great range of student work including extremely inspired, aesthetically pleasing work with captivating concepts and purpose. It is at this point in the year when the Tutors reflect on the progress of all students and from the list of Graduates and pick out nominees for the ‘NDA Student of the Year Award 2019’. It always gives us great pleasure to announce the winner of the award on the day of Graduation. This year we will be awarding an NDA Student of the Year Award for each qualification level achieved; MA, BA (Hons) and FdA. Our nominees for this year are: MA - Peter Booth, Amanda Dodds-Hooson, Mirjana Mikulec BA (Hons) - Samantha Hayward, Timothy James, Nadine Watson FdA - Phyo Aung, Amarpreet Dhanoa and Janet Eccleston Each nominee is worthy of this award; they all stand out to the tutor team because of the personal story that led to them being a student of the NDA, their academic efforts during their time with us, and their passion for the subject and professional ability. Tutors who have had the privilege of guiding these students through their courses all each have a rewarding reflection on their nominee.

As with many of our students, Peter’s career and initial education was very different to that of the design industries. He studied for a Degree in Biochemistry and Physiology from the University of Sheffield and following an illustrious career as International Director for many international financial institutions, Peter turned his skills to the Heritage Interior Design sector following a love for developing and renovating heritage properties.

As the main door enters directly into the living room, a separate 'room' has been built with an above platform for additional storage, book cases or study area and to provide hanging space for outdoor clothing and shoes. The living area has further built in storage behind the in built dining area. The existing fireplace is retained and has been upgraded with a gas flame natural fire to supplement the central heating. The kitchen is compact ample for 1 or 2 with full facilities built in though half size appliances to make use of space. The bedroom is designed around a central bed platform module, using vertical space for additional storage, a wardrobe divider to the dressing area, and a desk that rests of the steps up to the bed. Reflecting on his NDA experience, Peter notes that “I couldn’t have imagined what I would personally achieve in my development while undertaking this [MA] programme. The content of the programme and the further skills developed took my capabilities to a new level. Upon completion of the MA, I was both elated to have achieved completion of the programme and profoundly sad as it felt like the loss of an old friend. However further reflection laid the foundation for the next steps!” Design Sketches

Each of the rooms are lined either with storage, built in furnishings or a1/2 to 2/3 dado wood panelling. The panelling forms two purposes, a) in keeping with British and American architects working with wood panelling for Arts and Crafts homes with traditionally higher dado panelling than other eras and b) to conceal a layer of insulation between panel and wall or to conceal a hot water radiator through vents, grill or similar opening. The largest of the apartments and with the greatest amount of sun and views, it has been designed with several 'wow' factors, such as the ceiling to floor clock face in the living room, a fully fitted master bedroom, a smaller living bedroom space for a guest, a chef style kitchen with breakfast bar, separate dining area, concealed study through wall to ceiling book case and a conservatory to enjoy afternoon and evening sun. It has a grand hallway that will remain plane and utilise local artists work as the main form of decoration.

MA NOMINATION 2 - AMANDA DODDS-HOOSON

Amanda has been a devoted student of the NDA, starting her education design career with us back in 2011 when she enrolled on to the Diploma in Interior Design course. Amanda embarked on her higher education studies a year later, enrolling on to the FdA Heritage Interior Design course, and subsequently the BA (Hons) Heritage Interior Design Top-Up course. It is now, with Amanda completing her Post-Graduate studies with a Distinction in MA Interior Design, that she rightfully earns her nomination for ‘MA Interior Design - Student of the Year’. Senior Tutor, Vicky McClymont, who supported Amanda throughout her FdA and BA (Hons) studies recalls of Amanda’s success at undergraduate level. Vicky notes that “In the many years I have been tutoring students at Degree level, Amanda made a true impression with her keen sense of investigation, her thorough understanding of the Heritage Interiors landscape but ultimately, the level of confidence she had in herself; she really underestimated just how good she was, and is!” Speaking of her continued success on the MA course, Director of Design Studies and Tutor, Anthony Rayworth, notes that “Amanda has consistently produced work of the highest quality, great complexity and which is underpinned by a rigorous academic ethos rarely achieved at Post-Graduate Level. It is testament to Amanda’s perseverance and professionalism that the quality of her work is acknowledged by external bodies including the Heritage Departments of her local and regional Councils, The National Trust and English Heritage. Very well done Amanda and our very best wishes for the future from all at the National Design Academy”.

MA NOMINATION 3 - MIRJANA MIKULEC

Mirjana joined the National Design Academy in 2017 to complete the Master’s in Interior Design. BA (HONS) NOMINATION 1 - SAMANTHA HAYWARD

Samantha applied to the National Design Academy in 2017 after completing her previous studies in Interior Design at Diploma level. Previously Samantha worked within the fashion industry and started her own business gaining clients and experience but always had a growing interest in Interior Design. Samantha’s Independent Study proposed a co-working space titled ‘The Signal’ which had the unique addition of VR and AR suites. The outcome proposed a functional and inspired interior with some innovative contributions. It promotes some of the comforts of home with the connectivity of an office and the cultural insight of emerging technology. “This project echoes the interests, influences and global attentiveness of Samantha. It is a real culmination of her personal and professional experience. Samantha has been dedicated in her efforts and pushed herself, she has also welcomed and applied constructive feedback which can be a rare trait. These attributes have made working with Samantha a real pleasure as her execution of design has strengthened rigorously during her time on this course. BA (HONS) NOMINATION 2 - TIMOTHY JAMES

Tim has been a dedicated student of the NDA, starting his education design career with us back in 2012 when he enrolled on to the Diploma in Interior Design course. Going from strength to strength, he embarked on his higher education studies a year later, enrolling on to the FdA Heritage Interior Design course, subsequently achieving a Distinction. After a two year break, Tim rejoined the NDA, studying the BA (Hons) Heritage Interior Design Top-Up course, leading up to today’s Graduation ceremony with Tim being awarded a First Class Honours Degree. Tim describes himself as “a big fan of History and Architecture, and happiest exploring a Country House; a hands-on guy who is never happier than when working on a project.” This is true of Tim’s career, currently working for the Landmark Trust as a builder, and also undertaking the role of a trustee of the Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust in North Wales. Never keeping still, Tim is also putting together a book with a friend on the derelict mansions of Scotland, and renovating a small cottage in France. The dedication to the design and preservation of historic interiors is something clearly evidenced throughout his studies, as Tim’s Tutor, Odette Maine explains, “The care and consideration Tim evidenced to all areas of heritage detailing, was prevalent in his design proposals. There was always clear communication of Tim’s design intent, his sensitivity in approach, and respect for the buildings used within all design projects. Tim’s nomination for BA (Hons) Student of the Year is very much deserved and is just a small reflection of his knowledge, ability and passion for Heritage Interior Design”.

BA (HONS) NOMINATION 3 - NADINE WATSON

Nadine joined the National Design Academy to study the BA (Hons) top-up Interior Design course, having worked within the interior design industry for over 25 years. Living and working out of Dubai, Nadine notes the importance of undertaking a qualification such as this, stating that “I have found that over the years, holding a Degree qualification is required to register my own company. I wanted to acquire this qualification so that it could open many more doors and opportunities for me in the future”. Nadine has brought her extensive international design knowledge and skillset to her course project proposals, with many of her design projects challenging cultural concepts and creatively enhancing the user-experience. Nadine’s clarity of design thought and design awareness was clear from the outset, as NDA Senior Tutor, Vicky McClymont explains: “If there was one word to describe Nadine’s work, it would ultimately be ‘professional’. Not in a contrived sense at all, but coming from a place out of respect for the industry and a clear sense of how her extensive experience and knowledge have informed her design projects. From my part as a Tutor, it gives me great satisfaction knowing that someone with the level of experience that Nadine has, isn’t complacent and strives to do the utmost in order to better her skills to best of her ability”. Nadine’s Independent Study Project focussed on the design of an eco, new-build holiday retreat, located in the Hajjar Mountain range in the Emirate of Ajman, UAE.

Phyo’s presentation approach and digital skills made his projects visually strong, fully showcasing his 3D visualization skills. Phyo’s final project was based on an Aparthotel concept which took inspiration from individual elements of modern architecture to create a unique design. Phyo’s design proposal reinforced his design consideration and research approach, stemming from a simplistic approach to space his concept allowed for all elements to work holistically which brought sense of symmetry and fluidity to his design.” - Andreia Vidas. Amarpreet’s final project focused on the design of a commercial space located in the Riverside Crescent complex in Nottingham.
