This issue, Kid Connect celebrates its second birthday! I just want to take a moment to thank everyone who has believed in this publication and those who read it. It’s parents’ and grandparents’ stories and emails to me, telling me how helpful it is to them that keep me going. And recently, I have also had an email come through from a woman who is starting her own similar publication in Canada and i have been able come alongside her and act as a mentor for her. It has been a joyto see that this little magazine has been useful and helpful to so many and to hear of the places it has traveled is also fun!

I love putting local kids and families in the magazine and I especially love hearing from those families how far they have sent these magazines! I have heard from A LOT of proud grandparents who mail the magazines all over the country to brag about their “famous” grandkids! It is so fun to read those messages! I have been contacted by people that live out of state, who are moving back home, thanking me for keeping them “in the loop” and prepared for what things to sign up for, pencil in their schedules, etc. In fact, the Umlands, the ‘Meet the Family’ family in this issue is one of those several families. My mom is one of these “proud Grandmas”, and circulates the magazine among all the family, brings it to her work, and sends it to gals in her main office in New York. Oh, and did I mention that she does not live in Wenatchee? haha.

This issue was so much fun to put together! It was exhausting, but fun!

The amount of summer camps and activities is out of this world! And the birthday section was also fun (though quite a challenge!) to put together. Who knew we had so many birthday party options in Wenatchee? And seeing all the new businesses, like Merriment and Stage Kids, is also always so fun to see! Our community is growing and thriving and I love being able to share all that it has to offer for our families and kids!

So thank you! No matter how you contribute to the magazine, whether it is in writing for, advertising with, or reading it, YOU are a large part of this business!

I

know what strain on a marriage feels like. And it’s easy to see how the big stuff can damage a union.But the true danger for many of us lies in the small things. The day-to-day strain that comes with busy schedules, sick kids, work stress, unexpected bills, broken appliances and parenting growing children in new phases (hormones in the house, yo).

So, you know normal stuff.

In these seasons (and we all have them), there’s a tendency to let life lead you instead of the other way around. There’s the temptation to get everything else done and forget about each other. And when you do that, you feel the pulling in your marriage.

This year, I will celebrate being married for two decades. Crazy, since I’m still obviously so young.

There’s a lot of water under the old bridge. I have shared the best days of my life with this guy and also the very worst. And I’ve learned this one thing is true: every day is a new chance to make my marriage better. Here are 3 things you can do today:

1. Connect :: It might sound basic,

but with busy lives, parenting, jobs and life filling every hour of the day, it’s too easy to go an entire day or even week without connecting with your spouse.

• Talk.

• Don’t go to bed without asking your husband or wife about their day.

• Wait for them to answer. Last week I heard on the radio that you should wait 30 seconds after you ask your husband a question without saying a word. It’s harder than I thought it would be.

• Turn off the late night TV shows and communicate. You might be surprised what your spouse will say if you ask them.

2. Compromise :: Oh, yes. This.

Even after so many years together, this is still what keeps peace. We are two totally different people and we don’t see eye-to-eye on everything (or anything some days).

• You don’t have to agree on everything. We don’t. Just last week we were on opposite sides and we agreed to disagree.

• Love despite your differences.

• Don’t pick or nag or insist on your way.

• Compromising on the small stuff has a huge impact on your marriage. You don’t have to win every argument or be right about everything. Getting along for the long haul is about meeting in the middle.

3. Care :: If a friend needs a favor, I try to be there. It’s often easier to care for a sick neighbor or show love to a girlfriend than it is to show kindness to our spouse. Being kind, going the extra mile for our partners speaks volumes of love.

• Be nice.

• Be quiet. I’m bossy and sometimes it’s better to just hush.

• Do the little things. I noticed recently my husband filled up my car with gasoline and plugged in my phone to charge when I forgot. These little things show just how much he loves me and it makes me want to care for him in the same way. If we make it our goal to show kindness to our husbands as we do others, they will notice.

The relationships in my life are good. But I long to make them better. Sometimes the most profound way to do this isn’t as complicated as we might think. Sure, sometimes we just need a good old fashioned counseling session. I’m certainly not against getting help when we need it, but often we can turn the tide in our marriage by simply treating our spouse like we want to be treated.

It turns strain into something stronger.

Where Should My Kid’s Next Birthday Party Be? This is the question I hear the most from local moms. We are so perplexed when we stop to think of the answer. The only two places that anyone seems to ever think of are gymnastics or Dragon’s Lair, inside of Eastmont Lanes. While these options are fabulous and so fun, they can also become “boring” and “common”.

Doing what everyone else is doing is NOT the current trend. Our generation is all about wanting something new. Something different.

Something not every other kid in the class has done. While birthday party options are not excessive in Wenatchee, there ARE some place and options that you may not have thought about or even knew about.

My hope with this list of fabulous ideas is that you will learn more about what our community has to offer and maybe even get ideas of your own. While I have tried to make this list inclusive, I am sure there are even more options. If you know of others, please share with us on our Facebook page!

Meet The Family Meet the Umlands. Party of 5! Well sometimes... The Umlands are a proud active duty Army family! Take one step in their house and you know where “real home” is—WA State.

Seahawks gear, Starbucks mugs from all over the world and, of course, apples! No matter where they are in the world. They are able to feel close to home! The Umlands also have four legged members of the family. A cat named Briar. A black lab named Murphy, a rescue, and an English bulldog named Meaty!

Rachel and Michael’s love story is unique!

Michael was deployed to Iraq. Rachel had previously dated Michael’s best friend and had kept in touch via email while Michael was away.

3 months before Michael came back stateside, he asked Rachel out on a date to Olive Garden!

It hasn’t always been easy but love has made it easier!

loves helping others, making new friends, swimming and if she could talk her dad into, it she would try modeling. She collects penguins & die cast cars from the movie Cars. Definitely a daddy’s girl!!!

Aja Yvonne is almost 4. She attends the onbase CDC’s (childhood development center) pre-school program! Though we were hoping for a boy, God gave us a crazy, energetic, loud, funny and exhausting little princess!

She makes everyone laugh and loves to be the center of attention! Just like a lot of girls her age she is in love with Frozen. She sings & dances non-stop with her Anna & Elsa dolls in hand at all times (even while she sleeps)! Polar opposite of her sisters, she is a Mommy’s girl!

Michael is 34 and currently serves as a SSG for the 53rd Signal Battalion/1st Space Brigade in Colorado Springs CO. He joined the army when he was 17 and spent the first 9 years as part of the National Guard infantry unit based in Moses Lake WA. Michael has served in 3 deployments lasting as long as 15 months. After changing his duty position (MOS) their family has lived in GA, MD & CO. When Michael is deployed, Rachel and the girls always move back home (aka Wenatchee). It’s nice to have so many familiar places & faces while he is away for so long!

Rachel is 35 and now stays at home with the girls. She enjoys networking with other military spouses to make every move easier.

Baking and hospitality is where Rachel feels most comfortable. She has had a few setbacks over the last year with repeated knee injuries, ultimately ending with a complete new knee scheduled for July 14! Her goal is to be back on her feet and ready to coach spring soccer, run a breast cancer 5k and keep up with all the girls’ activities.

Jayda Marie is 10 going into 5th grade this fall. She lives with her Mom in Moses Lake but Michael and Rachel are sure to grab her every chance they get! She is definitely missed greatly when she isn’t with them. She is smart, funny, loves to perform in front of people and has red hair! Very much a daddy’s girl!

Isabella Joy is 8 1/2 going into the 3rd grade this fall. She is a very sensitive person. She

What’s your secret for balancing it all: Mom: My secret weapon is my Mother & Mother In Law! Being a military family means PCS’s(permanent change of station) TDY’s(temporary duty station) and sometimes weeks/months alone(deployments) with the girls.

Anytime the above has happened both women on a minutes notice will book tickets to fly to my rescue. My mom has traveled all over the country with me.

My MIL has helped us move 2 times. I couldn’t do it without the love support and guidance from our amazing families & friends. A military life is completely different life than a civilian. We make new friends that become family. We appreciate the time spent when we get to come “home” to the Wenatchee area. We put more miles on our cars more minutes on Face Time & go through more chargers then anyone else I believe.

Dad: Playing video games! It’s my escape from all the pink glitter & drama in the house!

Something that might surprise you about me is: Mom: I don’t clean toilets! Or mop the floors. Also I am adopted.

One of the questions I am often asked as a dentist is “How safe are dental x-rays?” I think this is a very important question.

As a mother of four, health and safety is a big issue for me. I can relate to the Moms and Dads who regularly ask me this question. Our Wenatchee office uses digital x-rays emitting approximately 80% less radiation than traditional x-rays.

Dental x-rays are an important diagnostic tool to detect tooth decay, which cannot be seen by a visual exam alone. Radiation is produced, however the amount is very low. Children grow and change quickly, so it is important to receive regular dental x-rays to assess tooth formation and potential problems.

After all, paying for sealants or filling a small cavity is much less expensive (and stressful) than a crown or more invasive work on your child.

The fact is: radiation accumulates in our bodies over a lifetime.

If you have ever taken the short plane ride from Wenatchee to Seattle, you were exposed to about the same amount of radiation produced from annual digital bitewings. A full mouth series of digital x-rays uses slightly more radiation, but these are only needed every three to five years.

According to the American Nuclear Society website, dental bitewings emit 0.5 mrem of radiation. To put this in perspective a chest x-ray is 10 mrem, a CT scan of the head is 200 mrem, and regular radiation from the internal air of your home (radon) is 228 mrem (depending on the construction of your house, whether you have granite countertops, etc.) When comparing dental x-rays to your environment and also lifestyle habits (smoking ½ pack of cigarettes a day gives you a yearly 18 mrem exposure), digital dental x-rays give minimal exposure to radiation.

Dentistry is constantly improving, so rest assured we stay current on the latest technology to make your child’s visit not only happier but safer as well. I feel comfortable giving (and receiving) regular digital dental x-rays. They are a safe and effective diagnostic tool for long-term oral health.

Relinquish Boredom By: Nikki Cox

When they are not bored, have your children (or child) write down activities they can do if when they become bored this summer. They can write these ideas on popsicle sticks and keep them in a jar labeled “Boredom Busters”, or they can simply write them on slips of paper and store them in a plastic baggie. Not need to get all “pintresty” here!

Ideas they might include in their jar could be some of these: Read a Book Go run through the sprinklers Cool a meal, or a dessert to go with dinner that evening Make some “Thinking of you” cards to mail to missed family members, teachers or school friends Age appropriate chores Go for a walk Wash the family car Organize your bedroom Make a collage with old magazines Create an obstacles course Go on a nature scavenger hunt Play Frisbee Create a game with sidewalk chalk… hopscotch, tic-tac-toe, foursquare, etc.

Having a boredom buster jar is one way to reduce the constant ear-piercing whines of “I’m Bored”.

But, parents, please—do yourself a favor and ensure that everything that gets put on the boredom buster list is something your child can do by themselves or with their siblings. The whole point of this exercise is to show them YOU are not their entertainment for the summer and that they are quite capable of keeping themselves entertained and if they dig deep enough, somewhere in there they will find their imagination!

It was an hour after she got home from Vacation Bible School.

One hour after Water games! Snow cones! a Slimy Craft!

Dancing and Singing! The Best Day Ever!

We were in the second week of summer. The second week of sleeping in and she was slipping and sliding…. towards boredom.

Walking around the house, whining about nothing to do.

Kicking her foot and waiting outside the bathroom door. (I wasn’t hiding, really).

Sound familiar?

Go. Find. Something. To. Do. She gave me an empty stare and then I realized she was waiting on me to tell her what to do, to do something with or for her.

And there it was again, this “You Owe Me” mentality that is wrecking our culture. We do so much for our kids- camps and classes, back and forth to lessons and events, we spend money and fill their lives with stuff and you’d think they would be oozing gratitude, but we are taken aback when they just want more.

More activities, more fun, more stuff.

More.

And honestly, I can’t really blame my first grader. Because for a long time, I provided The More. I bought into this lie that it’s my job to make my kids’ childhood magical and fun and everyday an adventure all about them.

I have fed the entitlement beast and when it rears it’s ugly head, my children aren’t the only ones to blame.

Our children need to be bored. They need to kick their feet and wait outside of bathroom doors, unanswered. They need to be sent outside or to their rooms to play. They need to turn over the bag of tricks and find it empty.

Because that’s when they will discover they don’t need stuff to fill their time. They don’t need a plan for entertainment.

They can create their own. And that’s when summer gets magical.

I pulled my little one aside and got down on eye level and I said, “Let me explain summer to you, honey.”

“There will be fun days! We will check boxes off your summer bucket list. We will play. We will work. We will serve. We will have great times. But there will also be a lot of unplanned days, there will be empty hours. There will be days when you’ve watched enough TV or we won’t be leaving the house for something super fun.

At first, these days may seem boring or like there is nothing to do. And that’s okay. Because after you whine and perhaps, cry, you will have to make up your own fun. You’ll get into that book from the library. You’ll draw doll furniture and cut it out and give your paper dolls a good home. You will figure something out. I love to see you having fun, but I will not, I cannot make every day fun. It’s not my job to make every moment The Best of Your Life. But it is my job to teach you that the days that aren’t fun usually end up being the best ones of summer.”

She ended up with a bucket of Legos and spent a couple of hours creating the coolest flying space car ever.

Easy Steps To Get Started

Bringing a new baby into our lives is such an adventure.

There are many unknowns that we don’t have much control over, but being prepared certainly helps. Breastfeeding is a big part of this adventure. It is a beautiful dance between mom and baby, and it becomes one of the easiest parts of motherhood… that is once we get the hang of it. It is the ultimate picture of love to have your baby nestled in your arms, staring into your eyes, and having the comfort of knowing you are providing the perfect nutrition for that little person. Sometimes in the early days of breastfeeding it doesn’t feel that way, but very quickly, that sweet picture becomes reality. The following are helpful steps that you can take during pregnancy and after to get off to the best start.

During Pregnancy It may seem that the time to start thinking about feeding your baby is after they are born, but actually, pregnancy is the best time to get yourself prepared. Some things that you can do while pregnant are: o Talk with your provider about how to best be prepared. o Attend the FREE breastfeeding classes at Central Washington Hospital and/or WIC. o See if you’re eligible for WIC; they have great breastfeeding support and even have Breastfeeding Peer Counselors available during non-regular business hours. o Attend monthly La Leche League meetings while you’re still pregnant to meet other moms and get great support and information. If you have older children, you can bring them along. o If you’re returning to work, talk with your employer about how you can make breastfeeding work at work. It is now federal law to provide women a time and space to pump. o Find out which friends and family members have had a good breastfeeding experience and ask them for tips. o Get a copy of the Wenatchee Valley Breastfeeding Resource Guide to see what this area has to offer for support. o Some helpful topics to look into are latch, skin-to-skin, milk supply (supply and demand,) and hunger cues. o Check out the following reputable websites for your own research:

o Best results happen when the first couple of weeks with your baby are spent simply eating, sleeping, and feeding your baby. Getting a few things ready during pregnancy can help you do this:

• Freeze easy to re-heat meals such as casseroles and soups.

• Have a list of pantry items ready for easy meals and snacks.

• Reduce clutter in your house so it’s easier to clean.

• At your baby-shower, have friends sign up to bring you meals or to come and help pick up the house.

The hours soon after your baby enters the world are very crucial for breastfeeding success. There are many things you can do, as well as those caring for you, that can get you and baby off to the best possible start. o Breastfeed baby within the first hour, also known as the “Golden Hour.” Your baby’s instincts are very strong to breastfeed at this time and it’s important to take advantage of this before they get sleepy. o Go “skin-to-skin” right away. To do so, place baby unclothed on your bare chest and put a blanket over the two of you. Do this as often as possible, especially in the early days. It has many benefits for baby and helps initiate breastfeeding instincts. See the May/June edition of Kid Connect’s Breastfeeding Coalition Corner for more details. o Limit the procedures done to baby within the first hour. For a healthy baby, the only procedures that WA State mandates within the first two hours are Vitamin K, antibiotics for the baby’s eyes, and weight and length measurements. There is no reason for these to be done in the first hour; breastfeeding is the priority at that time. o Breastfeed often! Watch the baby not, the clock. Feed at the earliest signs of hunger. The more you breastfeed, the more milk you will make, especially in the first few weeks. It may feel like your baby feeds a lot at first but it will slow down as they grow. o Avoid supplementation. One of things that can have the most negative impact on breastfeeding and milk supply is supplementing with formula. Be confident that you will produce the perfect amount of milk for your baby.

Your doctor will let you know if it’s medically necessary to supplement. o Avoid artificial nipples. Pacifiers and bottles can cause nipple confusion which can lead to latching and other breastfeeding issues. It’s best to avoid these in the first month while you and baby are getting this new skill down. o Keep baby close 24/7. It’s good to think of you and your baby as one unit. You can watch and listen for your baby’s needs best when they are with you. o Limit visitors. The first hour, or the

As we have mentioned, it’s very important for mom to be close to her baby, especially in the first few weeks as they are learning this new skill. Friends and family have very good intentions and want to help but don’t always know how. There are many things they can do that are a big help but allow mom and baby their precious time together.

Here are some ideas: o Bring frozen meals or healthy snacks for the family to store. o Drop fresh meals by for them to eat that night. o Offer to help with the dishes or simple cleaning tasks. o Make a run to the store for them. o Fill up mom’s breastfeeding station (as mentioned in previous section.) o Hold the baby close to mom while she takes a nap. o Dads play an especially important role and can do all of the above as well as give baby baths, change diapers, hold baby skin-to-skin, and help with older siblings. o Be respectful of the new family’s wishes for time to themselves.

“Golden Hour,” is for you and your baby to get acquainted. Have visitors respect this time.

When visitors do start to come, be sure to make time for breastfeeding. It can be good to talk with your friends and family about visiting rules before baby comes. o Stay in the hospital until you feel comfortable with breastfeeding. The average length of stay for a healthy delivery is 24-48 hours.

If breastfeeding isn’t going well, you can stay longer to get the continued help you need.

This is one of the most important skills you’ll want to go home with!

You will want to have the phone numbers for the hospital breastfeeding staff or your midwife.

Find a comfortable spot for breastfeeding and have a basket with healthy snacks, a lot of water, phone, reading materials, diapers, wipes, and whatever else you might need so that you can focus on relaxing and feeding your baby in the early days without having to get up much. o Don’t wait to ask for help! There are many

Summer Camps Summer. Camps. Galore.

It can be easy to look at this enormous list of summer camps and get overwhelmed with choices. Before even beginning to look at it, decide what will be best for your own family. Look at your schedule, and decide how much time can be allotted towards summer camps and classes. Or look at your budget and decide how many activities you can be involved in according to your budget. If you kids are older, let them help you in the processes of choosing which ones they are really interested in. Limiting “fun” is also important during the summer months. We as parents, are often pressured to provide “the best summer ever!” for our kids, when in reality, it just makes for an exhausting, cranky family after too much “go go go”. We will welcome Native American artist and educator, Roger Amerman, Native American educators Clifton and Christine Bruno, and Chelan PUD wildlife biologist Kelly Cordell-Stine for hands on learning about Native American customs and the PUD’s stewardship of local wildlife and habitat. The fun, free sessions will include: interactive tipi set up, Native American traditional skills, making Native American tools yourself, Wild about Wildlife, handson, interactive for all ages, exploring the relationship between Indian people, plants and the natural environment, trying out some Native American tribal sports and games. Encouragement For Moms

As moms, we all need encouragement. During those times when we need to be supported and uplifted, we often call a mommy friend and spend time talking with her. It’s wonderful to have mommy relationships like this. But it’s even better to have a relationship with God Himself, who can provide the best encouragement that speaks most directly to our soul. We should certainly cultivate mommy relationships by both giving and receiving. But let’s not forget the encouragement that God offers us in His Word and makes meaningful to us through the ministry of His Holy Spirit.

I’d like to share with you two verses that encourage me in my role as a mom.

The first is 1 Corinthians 15:58: Therefore, my dear [sisters], stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

Did you catch that? Our labor in the Lord-our mothering-is not in vain. It may look sometimes as if it’s in vain, but it’s not. God promises us that it’s not. Cling to that, mommy friend, when you’re exhausted or discouraged; when it seems like you’ve corrected the same misbehavior a thousand times, yet it still occurs; or when your prayers for your children seem to be going unanswered.

Our labor is not in vain.

I refer to it occasionally when I need to be reminded that what I do matters. I’d like to share it with you in the hopes that it will encourage you, too.: Loving Jesus I started my day early, Before the room was light.

I lifted my son from his crib And wished it was still night.

But as I held him close and said, “Hi, Kenneth, precious one,” I knew that as I greeted him, I greeted too God’s Son. When my daughter woke up later, Calling, “Mommy! Mommy! Down!”

I picked her up and hugged her In her worn Elmo nightgown.

I know she felt the closeness That a mother’s touch affords.

I welcomed not just Ellie, But so, too, the Lord of Lords.

That day, I mixed some formula And opened jars of peas.

I fixed some “pizza butter” bread When she grinned and said, “Pleeeeease.”

I heated up some leftovers; I had to nuke them twice.

And when I fed my children, I was feeding Jesus Christ.

The second is Matthew 25:40: The King will reply, “I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.”

Jesus didn’t say, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these, I appreciate it.” He said, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these, you did it for Me.” I was meditating on that verse one day a few years ago when God caused me to realize the implications. If everything I do as a mother is really done for Jesus Himself, then even changing a diaper takes on a vast, spiritual significance. Even the mundane, thankless tasks of motherhood become immensely significant. Why? Because we do them not primarily for our children, but for Jesus. Jesus

I made some funny faces, And “played puzzles” on the floor.

I dressed kitties, ran around outside, And played with them some more.

We laughed and jumped and tickled, Making memories to be stored.

When I spent time with my children, I spent time with my Lord.

I wiped up sticky cereal And washed the dishes clean.

I straightened, picked up, put away, And dusted in between.

I did six loads of laundry And folded it like new.

When I cleaned for my children, I cleaned for my Savior, too.

When my children were both crying,

I held them in my arms.

I cuddled them and whispered That I’d keep them safe from harm.

I told them how their Father saved them With His perfect Lamb.

When I comforted my children, I comforted I AM. Later on that evening, I put them in the bath.

I washed their little bodies As they kicked around and splashed.

I dried them in soft towels And put their jammies on.

When I had washed my children’s feet, I’d washed the Holy One. I cooked and cleaned and rearranged, Made beds and taught and played.

I made sure that we had food to eat And that we often prayed.

I died to self. I made a home From ordinary things.

But when I served my children, I served the King of Kings.

To some, I have done nothing, But to two, I’ve done the world.

I made eternal difference To my precious boy and girl, And to the One who watches over Every pathway that I’ve trod.

For when I’ve loved my precious children, I’ve loved Almighty God.
