Accounts of the board’s adherence to the bill have diverged, with some members expressing frustration at only having met with one candidate while UNC System Vice President for Communications Joni Worthington

New UNC president ready despite turmoil Amid questions of leadership and outcry over a lack of transparency, the UNC Board of Governors unanimously elected Margaret Spellings as the president of the 17-campus University of North Carolina system Friday. The decision comes at the end of a secretive search for candidates that began in January following former UNC President Tom Ross’ unexplained removal from office after serving for five years. Spellings, who is currently President of the George W. Bush Presidential Center and the former United States Secretary of Education for the Bush administration, will take office March 1. John Fennebresque, chairman of the UNC Board of Governors, was overcome with emotion following Spellings’ statements accepting the position. “I’m so excited — so relieved — that we have hired the special person that Margaret Spellings is,” Fennebresque said. The search Fennebresque has come under much criticism for his handling of the search process and also for his role in Ross leaving. Last week, Fennebresque called an emergency closed meeting between the board members and Spellings, tipping the board’s hand as to whom would be the next president. The meeting drew a new wave of calls for Fennebresque to step down

College students explored their creative sides Friday at College Night, hosted by the North Carolina Museum of Art. The event was free and provided students with a variety of entertainment, such as the M.C. Escher exhibition, a fashion show, live music and opportunities to create artwork of their own. “It’s a really good experience because it’s nice seeing other college students that are interested in the same things we are,” said Tony Thorpe, a sophomore studying art and visual communications at North Carolina Central University. NC State had a large presence at the event. Students from the College of Textiles showed off

their talents in a fashion show, and students from the College of Engineering had their “Infinity Cube” featured with the M.C. Escher exhibit. The “Infinity Cube” is an art piece designed to complement “The Worlds of M.C. Escher,” which is the largest ever Escher collection in the United States. The piece is made from several LED lights in the shape of a cube, which is then inside of a box made from two-way mirrors. The lights have a series of repeating patterns that, thanks to the mirrors, seem to continue into infinity. “We saw the ‘Infinity Cube,’ and that was fascinating,” said Katherine Harrison, a senior studying civil engineering. “I liked how the NC State students
