Our Partners in Success

NC State deeply values your dedication to supporting and empowering your students. Our mission is to equip you with the information and resources needed to help them navigate the admissions process and expand their access to higher education.

As the largest university in North Carolina, NC State is home to more than 39,000 students and 2,400 faculty across 12 colleges, covering every major academic discipline. Our campus fosters both academic excellence and personal growth, with more than 100 majors and minors, 200+ study abroad opportunities, 700+ student organizations, 22 Division I athletic programs and a vibrant arts and culture community.

At NC State, learning begins in the classroom, but it doesn’t end there. Students put their knowledge into action through research, internships and coops with a wide network of business and industry partners. This hands-on approach prepares them with the career-ready skills and experiences they need to thrive long after graduation.

We hope you find the materials in this packet useful as you guide your students through the admissions process. We look forward to partnering with you this year and invite you to see firsthand how NC State continues to Think and Do the extraordinary.

First-Year Admitted Student Data by College

Our first-year admit rates by college for 2025 are displayed to the right. This data shows that some colleges are more competitive than others.

Students should not be discouraged from applying to a major within a college with a lower admit rate, as admit rates can fluctuate by majors within the same college. That said, students are strongly encouraged to select first- and second-choice majors from different colleges on their application.

If we determine the student is not competitive for their first choice, they will be reviewed for their second choice.

*NC State recalculates GPAs based on the state of North Carolina’s course weighting system. Students are awarded the equivalent of one (1) quality point to the grade earned in an AP/IB/ college level course. Honors level classes receive a one half (1/2) point.

Test Score Policy for 2026 Applicants

First-year students applying for fall 2026 with a weighted GPA of 2.8 or above (a B- average) are not required to submit SAT or ACT scores. Students may indicate on their Common App or Coalition on Scoir application if they wish to have scores used; scores will only be used to enhance the application. Not submitting scores will not adversely affect their application. First-year applicants with a weighted GPA greater than or equal to 2.5 and less than 2.8 will be required to submit a score of 17 or higher on the ACT, or 930 or higher on the SAT.

Selecting a First and Second Choice Program

When advising your students, encourage them to select first and second-choice majors from different colleges on their NC State application. Programs within the same college often have similar admission criteria. If we determine a student isn’t competitive for their first choice, we will automatically review them for their second.

For students who need help deciding which majors to select on their application, we encourage them to use Focus 2 Apply to explore how their strengths and interests align with different NC State majors and career paths. They can get started at go.ncsu.edu/focus2apply

Change to Minimum Course Requirements

The UNC System updated minimum course requirements for students applying for admission starting in the fall of 2024. High school students are no longer required to have completed two years of a world language. While taking a world language is no longer an admissions requirement, we strongly encourage students to continue to take two years of a world language in high school. For many students, completing two years of a world language in high school will help them meet foreign language proficiency.

Math Preparation for FirstYear Applicants

To prepare for the academic rigor of college-level courses, we strongly recommend that all high school students take pre-calculus.

To be a competitive applicant for a STEM or business-related program, pre-calculus is a minimum requirement. To ensure students are fully prepared for the advanced math coursework they will encounter in these fields, we will also expect for them to complete calculus if it is offered at their high school.

First Year Program Updates

First-year programs provide incoming students with interests in broad multi-disciplinary areas. For majors including biological sciences, biology, genetics, microbiology and zoology, incoming students can choose one of two first-year programs based on their interests. The Life Sciences First Year (LSFY) program provides a common curriculum for students to explore life science majors before committing to one discipline. The Environmental First Year (ENVFY) program provides a broad introduction to interdisciplinary problem-solving related to grand challenges in the environment and sustainability.

Visit go.ncsu.edu/lsfy to learn more about the Life Sciences First Year (LFSFY) and go.ncsu.edu/ envfy to learn more about the Environmental First Year Program (LFSFY).

Exploratory Studies

Exploratory Studies is a great option for first-year students who are still exploring their academic interests. However, students who enter the program with a significant number of college credits (30+) may find it challenging to apply those credits effectively, as the curriculum is designed for students with fewer credits. We encourage students with a high number of credits to apply directly to a specific major to ensure their credits count toward a timely graduation.

Transfer Pathways

Transfer students are an essential part of the Wolfpack—in fact, one in five NC State graduates began their journey elsewhere, with more than half of those students coming from a North Carolina Community College.

We are excited to introduce Wolfpack Connect, our new guaranteed admission pathway for students in select majors. Wolfpack Connect simplifies the transfer process by providing a clear roadmap from one of our partner North Carolina Community Colleges to a bachelor’s degree from NC State. We encourage you to explore all of our transfer pathways at go.ncsu.edu/transferpathways
