LAKE OF LAMENTABLE LACK p26

Fiction is sometimes stranger than facts. Let us make you realize the truth of this tragic irony. You may squirm in disbelief, but truth remains. Otherwise, have you ever heard or imagined of a lake without boat or the garbage dump floating freely along the banks! It sounds to be a misnomer; but hold on.

The modern woman needs to take heed of the saying: “With great power comes great responsibility”. There seems to be a pattern in women, who selectively play the victim when it suits the purpose.

Do you spend even 5% of your monthly income for your self enjoyment? Usually...No. Why can’t we enjoy simultaneously while we earn?

A

re we earning to pay builders and interior designers, caterers and decorators? Whom do we want to impress with our highly inflated house properties & fat weddings? Do you remember for more than two days what you ate at someone’s marriage? Why are we working like dogs in our prime years of life? How many generations do we want to feed? Most of us have two kids. Many have a single kid. How much is the “need” and how much do we actually “want”?? Think about it. Would our next generation be incapable to earn, that we save so much for them!?! Can not we spare one and a half days a week for friends, family and self?? Do you spend even 5% of your monthly income for your self enjoyment? Usually...No. Why can’t we enjoy simultaneously while we earn? Spare time to enjoy before you have slipped discs and large prostates or any other serious sort of disease. We don’t own properties, we just have temporary name on documents. GOD laughs sarcastically, when someone says, “I am the owner of this land”!! Do not judge a person only by the length of his car. Many of our science and maths teachers were great personalities riding on scooters!! It is not bad to be rich, but it is very unfair, to be only rich. Let’s get a LIFE, before life gets us, instead.... A lovely little girl was holding two apples with both hands. Her mom came in and softly asked her little daughter with a smile; my sweetie, could you give your mom one of your two apples? The girl looked up at her mom for some seconds, then she suddenly took a quick bite on one apple, and then quickly on the other. The mom felt the smile on her face freeze. She

tried hard not to reveal her disappointment. Then the little girl handed one of her bitten apples to her mom,and said: mummy, here you are. This is the sweeter one. No matter who you are, how experienced you are, and how knowledgeable you think you are, always delay judgement. Give others the privilege to explain themselves. What you see may not be the reality. Never conclude for others. Which is why we should never only focus on the surface and judge others without understanding them first. Those who like to pay the bill, do so not because they are loaded but because they value friendship above money. Those who take the initiative at work, do so not because they are stupid but because they understand the concept of responsibility. Those who apologizes first after a fight, do so not because they are wrong but because they value the people around them. Those who are willing to help you,

do so not because they owe you any thing but because they see you as a true friend. Those who often text you, do so not because they have nothing better to do but because you are in their heart. Those who take out time to chat with you, does not mean they are jobless or less busy, but they know the importance of keeping in touch. One day, all of us will get separated from each other; we will miss our conversations of everything & nothing; the dreams that we had. Days will pass by, months, years, until this contact becomes rare... One day our children will see our pictures and ask ‘Who are these people?’ And we will smile with invisible tears because a heart is touched with a strong word and you will say: ‘IT WAS THEM THAT I HAD THE BEST DAYS OF MY LIFE WITH’. So never waste this beautiful life in crying, remorsing ,accusing ,mourning but live it to the fullest ..

“It is heartbreaking. We have become blind in the race to make more and more profit. We shouldn’t forget our humanity. Nothing would have been lost if the hospital had treated the child. Would it have affected their profit margin so much?” “My request to the central government - can’t we fight on these issues after two months? Let us fight dengue for now,” Delhi government released funds to the three municipal corporations of Delhi — North, South and East — to take steps to control dengue.

“The number of beds in hospitals for dengue patients have been increased by three times as compared to last year, but panic is the major reason behind people rushing to hospitals, Dengue situation is under control and the people should not panic. Our first priority is to treat dengue patients,”

“Dengue has been spreading in the city and there is danger of it taking anepidemic form but the Delhi government has completely failed in taking preventive steps to control the disease and provide adequate medical facilities to the patients, Advertisements on Dengue could have saved some lives.”

Ajay Maken, (President of Delhi CONG) “Delhi government and municipal corporations failed to tackle dengue. It is unfortunate that even when Congress an opposition party took intiative to create awareness for prevention against dengue, Delhi government did nothing in this regard on time.”

JP Nadda, (Union Minister of Health) “I held a meeting with the Delhi Health Minister and ask him to take strict action against hospitals refusing dengue patients. I have asked the Delhi government to monitor that private hospitals take only reasonable fees from patients,”

As dengue virus transmission is through a human-to-mosquitoto-human cycle, the influence of meteorological factors on dengue is likely to be associated with their impact on mosquito populations and behaviour. Other than the influence of weather factors, the shift of dominant serotypes and pre-emptive measures taken against dengue vectors may possibly affect the dengue transmission trend. The Capital of the country has been seriously affected by the Dengue and the numbers of cases are increasing each day on an alarming rate. The researches and the data have revealed that the hot weather condition also play a vital role in the breeding of

fic, commerce, and migration. The Dengue Fever is caused by one of four distinct dengue virus serotypes (DEN 1–4). This viral infection has resulted in an estimated 50 million to 100 million annual cases of DF worldwide, with about 500,000 of these cases developing into life-threatening Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF)/Dengue shock syndrome (DSS).

The idea was first agreed upon in 2010 with the first event held in Jakarta, Indonesia in 2011. Further events were held in 2012 in Yangon, Myanmar and in 2013 in Vietnam. Goals are to increase public awareness about dengue, mobilize resources for its prevention and control and to demonstrate the Asian region’s commitment in tackling the disease.

Dengue History

The first recognized Dengue epidemics occurred almost simultaneously in Asia, Africa and North America in 1780’s shortly after the identification and naming of the disease in 1779. The viral etiology and the transmission of mosquitoes were only deciphered in the 20th Century.

DO'S AND DONT'S FOR PATIENTS If you or any family member is suffering from suspected dengue fever, it is important to carefully watch yourself or relative for the next few days, since this disease can rapidly become very serious and lead to a medical emergency. The complications associated with Dengue Fever/Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever usually appear between the third and fifth day of illness. You should therefore watch the patient for two days even after fever disappears.

WHAT TO DO

In India‌

Dengue virus was isolated in Japan in 1943 by inoculation of serum of patients in suckling mice3 and at Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1944 from serum samples of US soldiers4. The first epidemic of clinical dengue-like illness was recorded in Madras (now Chennai) in 1780 and the first virologically proved epidemic of DF in India occurred in Calcutta and Eastern Coast of India in 1963-196457. In 1996, the first major outbreak of Dengue fever occurred in Delhi, where more than 10,000 cases and 400 deaths were reported. Outbreaks and deaths have been reported from Northern states of Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, Southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, western states of Gujarat and Rajasthan and eastern state of West Bengal. Infact, case fatality rate has been above 1% over last 10 years.

Did the "blue-eyed" bureaucrat tried to settle "personal score" with his batch-mate who was earlier heading NDMC? The Prime Minister Narendra Modi not only ordered for transfer of Home Secretary L C Goyal (who preferred pre-mature retirement but was persuaded to join in the ITPO) and Additional Secretary A K Singh but also appointed Rajiv Mehrishi as new Secretary. Sources say Singh had come to know only at the “last moment” when the PMO (Prime Minister Office) was to announce Mehrishi’s appointment.

Earliar, Justice Misra’s opinion to grab the “opportunity” was “fully “endorsed by then NDMC’s boss Shrivastava to end long pending “tax disputes” and improve the corporation’s “funds”. Due to tax disputes, the hotel had stopped payment for last 13 years. Justice’s Misra’s in his opinion dated April 20, this year said: “In prevailing facts and circumstances when NDMC is deriving optimum revenue by way of license fee and interest in reference to the interpretation of the interim order dated 18/05/2001 in IA (Interlocutory Application) No. 3705/2000 in Suit No. 610/2000, therefore, NDMC is being advised not to oppose for the sake of opposition the present interim application filed for passing compromise decree of suit under order XXIII rule of CPC (Civil Procedure Code). Accordingly, Learned Standing

Counsel (SC) Shri Manish Mohan may be requested to assist the Hon’ble Court to pass an appropriate order in proposed interim application in suit no 610/2000 (listed on 21/4/2015) at the pleasure of Hon’ble Court.” Earlier, Justice Misra, citing background of the case in the same opinion noted: “The long pending litigation concerning license fee is pending in different forms in High Court of Delhi. Suit No. 1793/1990 and thereafter Civil Writ Petition No. 7163/1999 filed by M/s C J International Hotels Ltd (Meridian’s parent company) were failed and ultimately Suit No 610/2000 which is pending adjudication in High Court for more than one and half decade. An interim order dated 18/05/2001 was passed by the Hon’ble High Court of Delhi (Justice S K Mahajan) disposing interim application namely IA No.

The settlement of long standing licence fee disputes between Meridien and NDMC by Shrivastava in March this year was “objected” by Singh and he ordered “inquiry” into the matter. Since Home Ministry is nodal agency for the NDMC, it comes under purview. Jalaj Shrivastava Court documents exclusively accessed by NCR LIFE reveal that the “primafacie” no irregularity was committed in the Meridian-NDMC case. The matter, however, was given the twist of “controversy”, according to sources, due to rivalry between two senior IAS officials, ex-NDMC Chairperson Jalaj Shrivastava and ex Additional Secretary, Union Territories, Anant Kumar Singh. Both belong to 1984 batch and come from UT (Union Territory) and UP (Uttar Pradesh) cadre respectively. . Correspondent has accessed the Certified Copy of the High Court decree prepared on 27th July, 2015 which refers to some "joint petition" - the fact is that no such joint petition was ever filed. Even the petition filed by NDMC on 31.07.2015 makes it clear from the notings of the exChairperson of NDMC Jalaj Shrivastava referred therein.

home secretary goyal objected the procedure The settlement of long standing licence fee disputes between Meridien and NDMC by Shrivastava in March this year was “objected” by Singh and he ordered “inquiry” into the matter. Since Home Ministry is nodal agency for the NDMC, it comes under purview. Singh later ordered “inspections” into NDMC’s affairs (by the time Shrivastava had already complete two years tenure and posted in Ministry of Agriculture) and later recommended CBI probe. This move, however, was objected by the then Home Secretary Goyal on grounds of procedure. This led to “ugly clash” in the ministry as Home Minister backed Singh in the matter by supporting CBI probe. The closeness between Singh and Home Minister was well known in the Ministry as former not only

belongs to later home state of UP but has served in his office when later was Chief Minister between 20002002. Singh had joined Home Ministry in December 2014 after Rajnath became Home Minister. Documents reveal that the so-called "settlement" between Meridian-NDMC never actually happened in the way it is being purposefully presented but after following due process of law. It was basically implementation of the court’s orders in the caseon 18.05.2001, which was not done for the last 14 years due to unknown reasons. The most important part of the process was the ‘”legal opinion” tendered by NDMC’s Chief Advisor (Law) Justice R B Misra and several rounds of high level meetings held in the corporation to discuss the issue.

cover story wisdom has prevailed, on the part of M/s C J International Hotels Ltd/plaintiff which have come forward to get the dispute resolved amicably at least at this stage,” Justice Misra opined, providing the context for compromise settlement. The then NDMC’s Chairperson made a lengthy handwritten note, dated April 20, 2015, on (Retd) Justice Misra’s opinion. He said: “Broadly I agree with the aforesaid. Generally, the party as plaintiff makes an endeavour to prolong litigation after obtaining interim relief from the court and always look forward to get finalization of suit in its favour. could be derived from order dated 18/05/2001 as aforesaid by NDMC during last fifteen years,” Justice Misra opined. “However with efforts of officials of NDMC though at very late stage, NDMC has been successful in creating congenial atmosphere for realization of a considerable amount of revenue (comprising of about 50 % is by way of arrear of licence fee and 50 % by way of interest). It is strictly in conformity with the court orders of long past and we are admitting in next court of hearing absolutely nothing beyond (i) compliance of old orders, (ii) leaving to court to adjudicate on pending dues towards a final settlement.” “It must be impressed upon the court that we are not in that sense “compromising” outside the court but merely carrying

ppearing on the NDMC’s behalf, SC Manish Mohan, referred to these notes in the court of Justice Jayant Nath where the NDMC-Meridian case was being heard. Based on these submissions, Justice Nath, in his order dated April 21, 2015 said: “This in an application under Order 23 Rule 3 CPC filed by the plaintiff. By the present application it is pointed out in view of the correspondence with defendant including letter dated 02/03/2015 and 26/03/2015 written by the plaintiff to the defendant, the matter with the defendant has been sorted out and to date arrears of license fee of Rs 150,92,43,676/ have been paid to the defendant in satisfaction

of the full license dues and interest payable up to year 2013-14.” “Learned senior counsel for the plaintiff submits that the plaintiff will continue to abide by the terms of the interim order passed on 18/05/2001 in this suit on the basis of which the defendant has communicated the calculations on the license fee as calculated by the defendant. Learned counsel for the defendant confirms above position. Accordingly the suit is disposed of in terms of the said satisfaction as stated by the parties. In view of the satisfaction as recorded above, a decree is passed in terms of the cor-

respondence between the parties which are attached to the application. Suit and all pending application stand disposed of accordingly,” Justice Nath said in his order.

However the fact the Estate department is just an “accounting” department and has no legal expertise to interpret 2001 ïnterim order” The amount of Rs 150 crores were arrived only on the basis of NDMC’s Chief Law (Advisor) Misra’s interpretation of 2001 “interim order” on methodology to calculate GTO (Gross Turn Over). out old court orders in the spirit of DB (Double Bench)’s last orders; particularly when the advice from Revenue Collection and Legal standing view point is not to prefer an appeal for sake of litigation,” he further noted. “To that end, we may submit to the court, accly (accordingly). If any other hotel wants to raise these issues in support of closure, while prima facie all cases are distinct from each other and to be treated on their own merits. We should certainly attempt to bring all pending litigations to a closure within the legal framework and towards maximising revenues for NDMC,” he concluded. The NDMC, however, has now challenged Justice Nath’s order, starting another round of never ending litigation. Two of the grounds mentioned by NDMC in application moved in Delhi High Court in July 2015 have no strong basis, as per NDMC officials. First point is that the SC (standing counsel) Mohan had no authorization” to settle dispute, which is contrary to NDMC’s Law Advisor Misra’s note.

13

October 2015

Second, the NDMC’s Estate records reveal pending dues of Rs 600 crores - which is a calculation done on 27/07/2015 and annexed with the latest petition - whereas settlement has been made only for 150 crores. However the fact the Estate department is just an “accounting” department and has no legal expertise to interpret 2001 ïnterim order” The amount of Rs 150 crores were arrived only on the basis of NDMC’s Chief Law (Advisor) Misra’s

interpretation of 2001 “interim order” on methodology to calculate GTO (Gross Turn Over). As per the agreement between NDMC and CJ International, each year it has to pay 21% of GTO as taxes. Further, the outcome of Le Meridian's stand is also that it is agreeable to pay licence fee at the rate of 21% of GTO which they had initially challenged.

This results in irregular positioning and crowding of permanent teeth. MYTH: There is no need of visiting a dentist if there is no visible problem with my teeth. FACT: You must see your dentist at least twice a year, no matter in whichever condition your teeth are at the moment. Sometimes, only a dentist can see a possible problem, and it is always better to start the treatment in earlier stages.

Why karkardooma get its name... Anjali Singh

Imagine the area about 150 years ago. There was a twin Karkari village, just across the border in today’s Uttar Pradesh. This Karkari was inhabited by people belonging to ‘dom’ or ‘dum’ community so the name ‘Karkar Dooma’ evolved.

T

he area is a paradox of sorts for most Delhiites. It has a district court, a number of private and government medical facilities, several public schools, and the relatively recent addition: a Metro station. This tongue twister of an area — Karkardooma — in Delhi’s eastern fringe has always puzzled people with its confounding origin. There is a Karkari Mor nearby and interestingly, there is a Karkari road too, which should ideally lead to a ‘Karkari village’ or a ‘Karkari colony’. The newly urbanised Karkardooma was earlier known as ‘Karkar Dooman’ as shown in an old Delhi map of 1912 but was always called ‘Karkari’ in popular usage. A shopkeeper, said, “Imagine the area about 150 years ago. There was a twin Karkari village, just across the border in today’s Uttar Pradesh.

This Karkari was inhabited by people belonging to ‘dom’ or ‘dum’ community so the name ‘Karkar Dooma’ evolved.” Things started changing after 1964, when Delhi Development Authority (DDA) acquired land for development. Till then, it was a rustic settlement of about 300 houses surrounded by agricultural land dotted with large number of wells and trees. “The urbanisation process did not stop with just half built and kutcha houses of the village changing into fully built houses. Traditional ways of life including the institutions of ‘numerdar’ and ‘pradhanji’ (heads) too have changed,” The railway line towards Ghaziabad via Anand Vihar came around 1964 but the landscape changed rapidly after 1970 when the planned colonies started sprawling. Today, with the Metro station occupying prominent place, people tend to forget its original namesake.

We are in an age where ‘Suno nahi dekho Don’t listen, see for yourself)’ drives every aspect of life and ‘seeing is believing’ as its credo, someone leading you to imbibe what is contrary to it, sounds like sowing rose in desert. But, believe me, this is what dilli ka sabse bada vella Rocky. Radio, which acquired a singular distinction of being a lone mode of entertainment with reach crisscrossing the length and breadth of the country, continues to hold its charm; thanks largely to the splurge of the private radio stations and more particularly to the FMs. The Radio as a means of entertainment industry has changed the tenor of entertainment in India as when the media was trying to spread its wings through television by launching private channels like Zee Tv, Sony Tv giving viewers a new trend of entertainment in the late nineties. By the new millennium year approaching year 2000, news channels like Aajtak, Star News with ABP tie up which is now ABP news have shown the new way of bringing news to Indians.

Prime Minister’s view of Sustainable Development Goals

Non Stop Flight from Delhi to San Francisco Air India is planning to launch a new flight from New Delhi to San Francisco directly since December which will run thrice a week, covering of distance of 16 hours. Currently Air India operates daily non – stop flights to Chicago & New York (from New Delhi) and Newark (from Mumbai). In the past, other Indian airlines, too, have explored connectivity with the US west coast. Air India operated flights to Los Angeles through Frankfurt, while Jet Airways briefly flew to San Francisco via Shanghai. Though Kingfisher Airlines considered starting a Bengaluru-San Francisco flight, the plan didn't take off.

During addressing a special summit of the United Nation the Prime Minister Modi classified the schemes of financial inclusion, education and skill development, direct benefits transfer, and pension schemes for the vulnerable among the initiatives that would promote sustainable development in all cross the globe. He claimed that, It is not just about fulfilling the needs of the poor and upholding their dignity, nor about assuming moral responsibility, but realizing that the very goal of a sustainable future cannot be accomplished without addressing the problem of poverty.

Swati Maliwal: Use Rail budget fund for installing CCTV Cameras in Train

The DCW chairperson, Swati Maliwal, suggested to use the budget of Railway for installation of CCTV in the trains rather than the Nirbhaya budget (was allocated for safety and empowerment of women after December 16, 2012 Delhi gang-rape incident), in an open letter to the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.“Installation of the CCTV cameras at train coaches is a very good initiative but we are not sure of whether it is right to use the money from the Nirbhaya Fund for that as that can be done from the budget amount allocated to Railways," said Maliwal in her letter to PM.

Women

‘cries’are ‘phoncy’ She should use her womanhood as a tool for opportunism rather than empowerment. Anjali Singh

T

he modern woman needs to take heed of the saying: “With great power comes great responsibility”. There seems to be a pattern in women, who selectively play the victim when it suits the purpose. After years of being in a live-in relationship, she accuses her ex-partner of rape. Married women who want out of marriage accuse their husbands and their in-laws of abuse. Later these charges are found to be untrue. To make matters worse, society reinforces her victimhood. The issue here is that the modern Indian woman is forced to victimize herself to be heard. She is obligated to prove her helplessness. She is compelled to have a shaky voice and shed crocodile tears. But the notion that these theatrics of female helplessness that presumably will evoke the savior instinct, is quickly becoming defunct. Like the boy who cried “the sky is falling” too often, the modern woman stands to lose authenticity of her call for help, especially when the real wolf appears.

24

October 2015

By setting up women in the power to accuse, but not to be accused, the Indian society is jeopardizing the fate of its daughters. Moreover, this duplicity is also usurping the rights of the less fortunate people who actually, don’t have a voice. Why is there such a vicious systemization of woman’s victimhood in contemporary India? French writer Simone de Beauvoir wondered whether what drives this victimhood is the universal fear of losing femininity. She asserted that every female is not necessarily a woman in the gendered sense. To be considered so, she must share in that mysterious and threatened reality known as “femininity”. Does this mean India is afraid to lose its women even as it pretends to empower them? Is the Indian woman, and consequently, her sanskaar being sacrificed at the altar of feminism? Is that why she must play her part, however dubiously, even as she makes gains in the modern society? For centuries, Indian writers have made a sincere attempt to understand the Indian woman and give her a place in our social fabric. For example, Hindu mythology has more than one archetype of a woman. There’s Durga-the angry dark one, Saraswati-

society This is the first step towards laying claim to her humanity as a whole. Besides, we must be cognizant of the prescient words of Doris Lessing who said, almost 40 years ago, that if a woman has to lay claim to being equal to man, then she must be able to proclaim her right to all emotions including those of aggression, hostility, and resentment. Our only Nobel laureate in literature, Tagore described women caught at the crossroads of modernity unable to fully grasp the implications of their newfound roles. He captured eloquently the domestic squabbles and external pressures in the expanding dominion of Indian women. His novels, such as Ghare Baire, forewarned against the cowardly, half-formed woman, who can bring potential ruin to herself and her family. Premchand showed women frustrated in their domesticity and unsure of how to break free as he wrote Godaan. But regardless of these rich descriptions of women and the roles they play, we always end up at square onethe feminine

26

ideal that we pay lip service to but never subscribe to. Some of the worst offenders of this are women themselves who deny their own nature against all odds. In their kitchens and courtyards, they crib and gossip and fume and plot to their hearts content, but in society, they refute all such claims playing the role of caring, nonbeings that they themselves know they aren’t but somehow should be. In the land of multiple goddesses and tempestuous heroines, we seem to be suffering from collective amnesia on the complexity of woman and wholeness of her being. Modern Indian woman is also additionally saddled by

the western stereotyping of her gender. The fairy tales that she grew up with, rooted in Victorian provincialism, told her that there is only one valid type of woman in the worldthe timid, fair lady who waits for her prince to rescue her. If she is not this, then she is a witch. If she is jealous then she is the evil step-sister. She is beautiful when subservient and ugly when assertive. That is why when the modern woman catches herself in the mirror, she tries to paint herself into a beatific self she is probably not. This self-belief of being angelic, of being feminine, as the world prescribes is important for her to be human. Her humanity is dwarfed by the fairy tale theatre of damsels in distress. In the 2003 essay titled “Against Love,” Laura Kipnis, a film studies professor and a feminist cultural critic, asked, “What becomes of students so committed to their vulnerability, conditioned to imagine they have no agency?” The essay was published in a chronicle

for higher studies concerning regulations limiting romantic or sexual relationships between students and faculty. The essay suffered from backlash but she did make a very valid point; consensual sex is messy. Indeed the idea of seeing grey when the canvas is universally black and white is intellectually befuddling. But this should not prevent us from discussing them as issues of adult life that plague both men and women equally. That a woman can get her hands dirty and take responsibility for her decisions favours reconceptualisation of the idea of feminine. Restructuring roles forms the very basis of the evolving relationship between the man and woman. The need of the hour is that women do away with the assumption of “abla nari”, a presupposition for all, regardless of age, education or social background. This is the first step towards laying claim to her humanity as a whole. Besides, we must be cognizant of the prescient words of Doris Lessing who said, almost 40 years ago, that if a woman has to lay claim to being equal to man, then she must be able to proclaim her right to all emotions including those of aggression, hostility, and resentment.

LAKE OF LAMENTABLE LACK ANJALI SINGH

ictions are sometimes stranger than facts. Let us make you realize the truth of this tragic irony. You may squirm in disbelief, but truth remains. Otherwise, have you ever heard or imagined of a lake without boat or the garbage dump floating freely along the banks! It sounds to be a misnomer; but hold on. There is a fascinating lake named Bhalswa, situated at the north-eastern end of Delhi

where visitors make a beeline to cherish the number of facilities like boating, canoeing, angling and kayaking here. Being one among the top noted lakes in the city, this could have been otherwise the best place for boating and picnic. Situated near Jahangir Puri near northeastern edge of Delhi, it is merely 50 minutes way off the symbol of the national pride- the India Gate. But it entails a bizarre irony. To give it a precise description Bhalaswa was once a lake. As per DDA, Bhalas-

Biologist Faiyaz Khudsar appears vivid when he says, “Though the lake was not very clean it supported forms of aquatic life. Migratory birds like Grebe and Dapchicks showcased their presence earlier in winter, which is not the sanario now.It also supported various species of fish, the Channa for instance.” Khudsar rules out the possibility that the lake will be able to support aquatic population in the near future. Environmentalist Vinod Jain, who had moved the High Court to save the city’s water bodies, says, “The Delhi Development Authority classifies Bhalaswa as a ‘revived lake’ but at the same time refuses to acknowledge its actual size. In an affidavit in 2004, DDA said the lake was 8,000 square metres but after a revision it admitted in 2006 through a separate

Surprisingly, this lake is comparable in size to Nainital lake, the cynosure of all tourists’ eyes visiting the lake sity ,” says Manu Bhatnagar of INTACH. But it’s pathetic today and the scene is markedly different and may take years to recover. Today, there’s no moisture left at the bottom, and boats meant for tourists lie unutilized. As per tourist source, “The lake had two arms, and the Bhalaswa landfill took over the northern arm. Since the embankment in 1964, the lake has never filled to its optimum capacity. The Delhi Tourism and Transportation Corporation has opened a multi-sports complex at Bhalswa Lake. Some of the adventure activities are parasailing, rock climbing, trekking, water sports including boating and hovercraft rides. Bhalswa Lake is a perfect destination & a favorite hang-out place for family. The Lake never sleeps and remain open on weekends

as well.” Bhalswa lake has no taker as of now. The reason being, thelake has lost its appeal among the tourist. It existed on the DDA land but owes its ‘grandeur’ to the Delhi tourism. But as the adage goes, there is no taker for the victim of misfortune. And this is what exactly happened to this helpless in the near futher lake. Neither the DDA nor the Delhi tourism department ever bothered to pay any caring heed to In between the clash of two cities to establish their holds on the lake, DDA land which was given to Delhi tourism to expand the tourist count on it but both departments are not taking their work seriously It faces a number of insurmountable problems .walls are dilapidated, worn out, dented an irreparably damaged through which people find easy way to defecate, throw the garbage and waste while cow dung dot the space meant for travelers to revel. Tourism is acknowledged as a ‘high growth’ industry globally with over 700 million tourist arrival internationally, the sector accounts for more than US $ 500 billion by way of receipt. Promotion of concept was feminine forever. This concept was challenged by some studies. Major concern of public and practitioners is risk of breast cancer with HRT. Although this risk is quite minimal and only in current users for 5 years. Oestrogen plus progesterone both are given for HRT if uterus is present. Those women who already had hysterectomy so no uterus, only oestrogen can be given. Oestrogen may cause uterine cancer and progesterone prevents it. So administration of progesterone along with oestrogen is mandatory if uterus is present. If uterus is not there only oestrogen is sufficient. Oestrogen alone has very-very minimal risk of breast cancer. Current data indicates that progesterone is main culprit for developing breast cancer. HRT is not taken for prevention of cardiovascular disease now whereas it is good for bone health. But its effect on bones persists only till it is taken. So routinely HRT is not

care of your child and help her grow appropriately only when you know her completely.

Importance of Knowing Your Child Science of parenting is continuously evolving. We know a lot of things today and are capable of helping our children grow well as compared to our parents. However, there are still many people who turn to their parents or older people for advice on raising their kids. Well, knowing your kid will only help you to fulfill her needs properly, follow right parenting techniques and raise her as better individual.

We know a lot of things today and are capable of helping our children grow well as compared to our parents. However, there are still many people who turn to their parents or older people for advice on raising their kids.

Top 10 Things Parents Should Know About Their Kids Here are the 10 important things which you must know about your child by hook or by crook. 1. What your child is doing when she is not with you? Depending on the age, things can be different. Now a days with so many gadgets and easy accessibility to technology, children can spoil themselves if you do not pay attention to their attitude and interests. 2. What your child cannot do independently? Definitely there are many things that your child can do without your help and believe it or not, she will enjoy doing them as well. However, there are certain things which your child may not be able to handle independently. So make sure that you are always aware of such things and you can help your child whenever she needs you the most. 3. What is your child’s field of interest? When asked children vary about showing their interests. However, if you observe your child then you will be able to find out what her field of interest is. You must know what your child is interested in so that you can provide right kind of support to groom her talent. 4. Is your child hiding anything from you? This is one of the most important things which you must find out about your child and for this you need to start early. Make sure you talk to your child as soon as she comes back home and ask her about everything that went on during the day. 5. Does your child lie? Even though you know that your child will not lie to you, it is advisable to listen to facts especially when there is some kind of problem. One of the biggest mistakes parents often do is not finding out the actual facts when there is a problem. 6. Kind of friends your child has It is very important to know about the kind of friends your child is making. You must be aware of your child’s friends in schools. At the same time you should also be aware if your child has any other friends apart from school friends. It is very important to ensure that your child is always in a good company. 7. How your child handles failures?

43

October 2015

Mistakes are not signs of weakness, but they are part of life. They are vital for growth and learning. You should be able to make your child understand this. Let your child see you that you admit your mistakes, learn from them and try to correct them. Tell them openly what you learnt from your mistakes. 8. What triggers your child’s tantrums? You must know what triggers your child’s tantrums and how to calm her down. Every child has to be handled differently when she is throwing tantrums or crying. Some can stop crying just by talking straightforwardly while some would not listen to anything. You have to find what works with your child. 9. What your child eats outside? You must be aware of your child’s eating habits when she eats outside food. Health is the most important aspect and field of concern for parents. For this, you

need to cook nutritious food and have the capability to convince your child to eat healthy food so that she can make healthy choices when she has to eat outside. If fast food is your child’s favorite, you can take her to the restaurant once in a month. 10. If your child is completing homework regularly? Children often run away from studies especially if they are not in a habit of completing their tasks consistently. Make it a routine so that your child completes her homework daily and she has the chance of doing well in school.Once you have done your research and learnt about the things related to your kids, you will find parenting easier. People may advice you what you are doing is wrong. But after all, none of them are you. You know your child better than anyone else. You need to learn what works with you and your child the best and leave the rest.

Various world class players like, Alessandro Del Piero, Nicolas Anelka, Robert Pires, Fredrik Ljungberg, David James, Luis García, David Trezeguet, Elano Blumer and Joan Capdevila were approached by the club owners and for the first time they played alongside the best Indian football talents. These marquee players had not only brought the experience of playing in top division of football but also encouraged the major European clubs to send their scouts in India. The ISL is just a small initiative taken by the AIFF (All India Football Federation) towards the promotion of Football in India. The initiative will help the country to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2022. Looking at the response of the football lovers in India, the second edition also promises to be a bigger success.

The joint statement signed between India and UAE during the visit of the Prime Minister announces a beginning of new and “comprehensive strategic partnership” between both the countries. The statement itself is comprehensive and covers a wide range of issues from combating cross border terrorism to commercial, educational and scientific collaboration between both the countries to enhance the already established relations. The wide ranging joint statement is available on the website of Ministry of External Affairs. The statement focuses mainly on the following: Elevate the India-UAE relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership. Coordinate efforts to counter radicalization and misuse of religion by groups and countries to pursue political aims. Denounce and oppose terrorism in all forms, dismantle the infrastructure of terrorism where they exist and bring the perpetrators of terrorism to justice. Strengthen cooperation in lawenforcement, various transnational crimes, police training and cyber security. Cooperate to strengthen maritime security in the Gulf and Indian Ocean region. Strengthen defence relations and cooperation to manufacture defence equipments in India. Encourage investment institutions of UAE to invest in India and including through the

establishment of India-UAE investment fund with the aim of achieving a target of USD 75 billion to invest in India’s plan of expansion of infrastructure. Promote partnership in energy sector specially in renewable energy. Promote trade between both the countries with an aim of increasing the trade up to 60% in the next 5 years. Strengthen partnership between UAE’s highly sophisticated educational institutes and India’s universities and higher research institutes. Promote cooperation in Space research and peaceful use of nuclear energy. Promote cultural ties and improving employment opportunities between both the countries.

Prime Minister thanked His Highness the Crown Prince for his decision to allot land for construction of a temple in Abu Dhabi. Signing of this joint statement, followed by the 11th session of IndiaUAE joint commission meeting in New Delhi on 3rd September 2015 can be seen as a mark of India’s improved foreign relations. It is obvious that India enjoys the support of UAE or it can’t achieve so many things mentioned in the joint statement single-handedly. India and UAE has centuries old cultural and commercial kinship, besides this shared past we share similar challenges in the present and a probable similar future. India has energy and financial needs and UAE has also increased its export of oil and gas to South and East Asian countries due to fiscal stress in Trans-Atlantic economies. Both countries share similar views on multiculturalism, pluralism, avoiding religious extremism and fighting terrorism, which are vital in shaping the future of relations between both the countries.

Maruti Suzuki to launch 15 new cars in India in the next five years

S

uzuki has an aggressive plan that involves launching 20 new models over the course of the next five years, and India is to be an integral part of the plan. President of Suzuki Motor Corporation, Toshihiro Suzuki has confirmed that with the exception of certain cars that are for the Japanese market only, all other cars launched over

the next five years will also make it to India. India is a key market for the company, especially with projected sales figures indicating that by the year 2025, India will be the third-largest car market in the world. While the products that Suzuki has released into the Indian market, in alliance with Maruti, have primarily been more customer-centric and less luxury oriented, the focus is gradually shifting. This means that we can expect to move beyond the S-Cross and the Ciaz, to more premium offerings from the manufacturer. And premium offerings might be just the thing, given that Suzuki has set Maruti a sales target of 2 million cars.
