P1 Orientation

Our Primary 1 students started their first day of school in the hall, singing the national anthem and saying the pledge with pride. After the assembly, they went to their classrooms to get to know their teachers and learn the school routines. Meanwhile, their parents stayed in the hall for a talk and a PAL activity. The students and their parents also had a chance to spend time together during recess in the canteen.

We have a good day in school. I felt a little nervous when I first started school.

. Now, I have many friends. We like PE lessons!

. Micah Yiew Min En and Ng Hayley from P1 Courage

Learning & Exercising

“Funnnnn!” – that is most of the students’ first impression of PE. However, PE is so much more than just fun play. Students hone their motor and social skills through manipulative tasks, dance and basic gymnastics movements. In addition, their observation skills are also critically challenged during lessons. Our students certainly enjoy learning and exercising at the same time!

I like PE because we can exercise and try different methods to throw a ball and towards different targets. I also like the variety of equipment!

Quah Yu Xin, Reanne from P1 Compassion

I like PE because we can play and learn at the same time! The selftoss-and-catch activity was very interesting with different variations that allowed me to challenge myself.

Visual Art

Our P2 students learnt about symmetry and the traditional way of creating symmetrical art on paper. Understanding how complex patterns can be created by folding and cutting, the students managed to create a symmetrical ‘chun calligraphy via paper cutting.

Reported by Ms Amanda Lim

I had fun cutting the character ‘chun’ and the rabbit. The rabbit was so cute! I liked the part where I put nice borders around the ‘chun’ character.

Sharing

This year, our school started the initiative on Values

Sharing by Nan Chiau Alumnus. Vera Yang (graduated in 2017, 6RS) & Clara Yang (graduated in 2022, 6GT) shared with our students on the value of “Respect”, which is our focus in Term 1.

Yeshwanthika Kannappan and Tang Jia’en, both from 3GT, reflected on what it means to respect teachers, friends and family members.

On our way to class, we can show respect to our teachers by demonstrating the Nan Chiau Bow. In class, we can pay attention to our teachers when they are teaching. During group discussion, we listen attentively and consider our friends’ ideas and opinions.

Before we leave our house to go to school, we say goodbye to our family members. When we return home from school, we can say “hello” to them. We can say “Goodnight” before going to bed.

Learning Journey to National Gallery Singapore

As part of a refreshed art education syllabus aimed at making learning more authentic, students have the opportunity to visit museums (e.g. the National Gallery Singapore) to expose them to Singaporean art.

In addition, a recommended list of artworks by local and international artists has also been included in the new art syllabus so that pupils can develop an awareness of Singaporean art. Through these authentic learning opportunities, students get to familiarise themselves with the artworks that depict different themes such as landscapes, portraits and history.

The objective of the MBL programme is to hone visual inquiry skills of our students such as observation and interpretation through the pre and post activities facilitated by the museum’s education facilitators.

My favourite artwork out of the two is ‘Cannot grow vegetables’ by Koeh Sia Yong as it has nice colours The kampongs and HDBs in the artwork are very good! I really enjoyed the trip so much!

Ines Halim from P4 Gratitude

My favourite artwork out of the two is ‘Life by the River’ by Liu Kang. I like it because of its lively bright colours. I also like the kampong houses and I learnt that the stilt is made to prevent houses from flooding and to prevent animals from getting inside their houses. I enjoyed it very much!

Reproduction in Plants – Observing Lilies

The P5 students had the opportunity to dissect and observe the reproductive parts of a lily flower in the Science lab. This is part of their learning on the topic of reproduction in plants. It provided students with an authentic experience in seeing the intricacies of flower through their curious eyes. The reinforcement certainly enhanced their of the topic.

My groupmates and I were able to dissect the ovary and see the ovules by being careful in our cutting. It was a wonderful and miraculous learning experience!

Yan Yichen, Max from P5 Respect

We did not manage to see the ovules and were a little disappointed that we could not have another flower to try, but it was a great learning experience and we enjoyed it!

Learning Fractions with Fraction Discs

The learning of fractions can be conceptually challenging. To make connection to what students are learning for the chapter, our P5 students were engaged in collaborative learning, figuring out and seeing for themselves, what happens when fractions are being multiplied with a whole number. Students were then able to conclude the rule of multiplying fractions with a whole number.

After learning using the fraction disc, the concept seems easier to me. I am able to visualise the number sentences and even solve my questions mentally.

Learning Journey to Asian Civilisations Museum

Our Primary 6 students went to the Asian Civilisations Museum as part of their cohort learning journey for National Education and Social Studies. The focus of this learning experience is for our students to understand the cultural and historical ties that have influenced the Southeast Asian countries. It gives them the opportunity to explore how Singapore’s cultural heritage has evolved over time through the influence of the diverse mix of cultures.

I saw a lot of interesting artefacts from bowls, old coins and glassware. I learn about the early traders that came here to trade in Singapore. It was an informative and enjoyable learning journey.

Isabella Wang Si Qi from P6 Perseverance

It was an interesting experience. I got to see artefacts from Singapore's past. I got to learn on how our early settlers live in the past.

Prefect VIA@OWEN

VIA@OWEN is our Primary 5 Prefects’ signature programme where they involve themselves in food distribution for the elderly, organised by Lion Befrienders Singapore. Our prefects also organised meaningful and engaging activities for the elderly residents. This January session coincides with Lunar Chinese New Year. Our prefects and the residents had a joyous Chinese New Year sing-along session.

I am very excited and happy to take part in VIA@OWEN as I get to help the elderly. I also learnt how to be helpful and helping others who are in need.

I was delighted to participate in VIA@OWEN to help the less fortunate elderly. I enjoyed the experience tremendously. This experience also helped me appreciate my own blessings in life. It was truly a memorable experience!

PAL Strategy/Social games

Our Primary 2 students were immersed in a pool of games such as Pictionary, Ludo, Checkers, Weiqi, Snakes and Ladders and The Strategy Game. As they challenged themselves to think of alternatives and options, they also learnt to respect one another’s decisions and patiently took turns. Students showed responsibility by caring for the game packs assigned to them.

The games were something new as we are always used to playing electronic games. Hannah Sim Shi Yun from P2 Gratitude

Total Defence Day

“Together We Keep Singapore Strong” – this year’s theme focused on the many ways we can put Total Defence into action in our everyday lives. To commemorate the food shortage during the Japanese Occupation, students were invited to try steamed sweet potatoes and tapioca during recess.

Booths were set up to educate students on items in a first-aid kit and their uses. They also learnt how to treat open wounds and bandage an injury on a mannequin.

Excerpt from an interview by The Straits Times, “I feel

Total Defence Day is important to our country as it enables us to know about the Japanese Occupation, and how civilians died for Singapore.”

Selected Cub Scouts and Brownies attended the War Memorial Service at Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI). It reaffirms the importance of Total Defence and reminds everyone that peace should not be taken for granted. Students learnt about what happened during the Japanese Occupation and listened to stories from war veterans. They also saw items found by excavators during the Sook Ching Operation, such as spectacles and old dentures.

Canteen Clean-up

In line with our school’s golden rule: ‘We respect this place’, students perform their duties during canteen clean-up, which takes place in the last five minutes of recess. Students take turns to fulfil their eco-stewardship role by cleaning the canteen area and transferring recyclables into the correct recycle bins. This has made a significant impact on the cleanliness of the school canteen. The students also shared their reflections in the Eco Stewardship Padlet.
