President’s Message – Kevallyn Paskos Dear NCPP,

Hot and cold weather has been enjoyable providing excellent opportunities to shoot in all weather conditions…except for rain! If you are a fan of late afternoon rich sunsets or overcast situations, Mother Nature has certainly provided us with a variety of options this summer. This season has been treating you well. July Guest Speaker – We were completely entertained by the one and only Hanson Fong as our featured guest speaker! Hanson is recognized as one of the premier wedding and portrait photographers in the industry today among other remarkable accomplishments. Hanson shared his pro tips such as hands on posing and lighting techniques throughout the evening. He demonstrated creative and correct posing with a variety of group sizes. Hanson’s creative slideshow demonstrated amazing lighting techniques using the most simple of flash solutions. We even got to enjoy a little comedy during the evening. Print Competition - Congratulations goes to…1st Place – Ann Gordon with “Nelson” and 2nd Place – Nicole DiGiorgio with “Cobra” and 3rd Place – Denny Weigand with “Waiting for Customers”. Great job to these artists who submitted images! I have challenged the entire board team and membership to submit one image each month. This is a great way to participate and add value to our organization. You might just learn a thing or two in the meantime! NCPP’s New Board Member Team – It is with great excitement that we begin our new journey together. There is a combined energy and enthusiasm to deliver exceptional service and value to our membership. All members are welcome to our board meetings so bring us your ideas. We would love to hear from you. Suggestion Box – NCPP had such a great response last year with the suggestion box that it will be making its return during our next meeting. This is such an important process for the board to understand what the membership is looking for in our organization. We want to hear you and implement programs that are working and eliminate the ones that are not. Please take the time to complete the questionnaire so we can get to work and build a better NCPP. NCPP’s membership and sponsorship support is growing and we are continuing to reach new goals for our bright future. This could not be possible without the endless volunteer hours of our Board Members and others! We have some great speakers lined up through 2013 so make sure you stay current with Focal Point, NCPP website, NorCal Meetup group and our Facebook page! Once again, a big thank you to NCPP for allowing me the opportunity to be your President. I will continue to be a dedicated, fair and thoughtful leader. My hope is to once again make you proud and continue the NCPP vision that began over 14 years ago! I look forward to seeing you again! Kevallyn NCPP Mission Statement: The Northern California Professional Photographers is an organization dedicated to advancing the business of professional photography. Our purpose is to create an environment amongst professional photographers that will inspire each of us and to help one another grow as business professionals and artists. 4

NCPP Proudly Presents August 9, 2012 – Craig Lee Food and Wine Photography I will be speaking on my background as a newspaper photojournalist and a photographer in the Bay Area culinary food and wine scene. I will talk about concept ideas for illustrations and working with designers and editors. I will address the challenges of photographing food and making it look good. I will talk about the challenges of how I handle lighting for food and people on location and concept ideas and looking for moments. I think people will come away with ideas and techniques they can apply to their own photography challenges.

Bio: Craig Lee is an awarded photojournalist with experience photographing people, food, wine and lifestyle images. Based in San Francisco, California, Craig has worked as a photojournalist for the San Francisco Examiner and the San Francisco Chronicle. He continues to freelance with them, as well as for multiple national newspapers and magazines, including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, San Francisco Magazine and Sunset Magazine. His work has earned Craig recognition from the National Press Photographers Association, Pictures of the Year, Association of Food Journalist, the San Francisco Bay Area Press Photographers Association and the APA Something Personal Show. Craig’s photography work helped earned the San Francisco Chronicle recognition as the best Food and Wine section in the nation by the James Beard Foundation for the first time ever in 2004, and repeating in 2006, 2007 and 2011.

August 2012

Preparing your image for "Projected" Image Comp This article will remain permanently in the Focal Point. Here are the basics for creating your "Projected Image" file.

We will be setting the file type, dimensions, color space, jpg quality, pixels per inch and file name that that will qualify for NCPP Projected Image Comp. These requirements are the same as PPA with the exception in NOTE 2 below. 1. Create a file that will become the background for your image that is 4,000px Wide x 2,200px High @ 200 pixels per inch. (20" x 11") This size fits our monitor and will be displayed at its optimal. 2. The color space can be sRGB or RGB1998. 3. The file type is a jpg with a Quality setting of 10. Total file size not to exceed 3.5mb. 4. You can apply a color or pattern to this layer just as you would do for a printed image that you would have entered previously in print comp. 5. Next prepare the image that you are going to insert over the background. The color space, ppi etc needs to be the same as your background layer. 6. Size the image as you wish in either a vertical or horizontal format. The image size must be at least 80 square inches. An example is 8" x 10". The image may be placed anywhere you want to put it on the background layer. The positioning of the image on the background layer will be part of your "Presentation" score just like with Printed print comp. 7. Add a stroke or any other edge treatment to the edge of the image you want, or not. 8. All images will be shown only with the background in the "Horizontal Format". This is the same way that PPA is handling it. The monitor will not be rotated for vertical images. They will be shown just like the example images on the previous page. 9. There is to be no photographer name or studio name on the image. 10. Name your file with the following convention: · Member's First Name_Last Name_Image_Title_.jpg (Use _ for spaces). · Example file name: Bill_Jones_Mount_Diablo_Sunset.jpg 11. More information for download or viewing at. NOTE 1: If you plan to submit any of these images to PPA, I would initially save this file as a layered PSD or TIFF. When I was done and ready to submit to NCPP, I would then save it again as a jpg with all of the requirements listed above and submit the jpg. This way if you later decide to enter this same image with PPA or re-enter with NCPP, you can open your PSD/TIFF and make any changes you want. NOTE 2: PPA Projected Submission Specifications match what is required for NCPP, except: · PPA requires your PPA# in place of your name in the file name: Example: 12345_Mount_Diablo_Sunset.jpg · Link to the PPA site for a video on “How To”: http://www.ppa.com/competitions/tutorials.php ENTRY RULES AND DEADLINES: · Cost per each image is $5.00 prior to Wednesday, (at midnight), prior to the Thursday meeting. Fee is to be paid via the NCPP PayPal link. E-mail images to mailto:mnslight@sbcglobal.net Limit of 20 Projected images allowed per meeting. This is at the discretion of the Print Chair on a month by month basis.

Focal Point Best of Show July 2012

August 2012

1st Place: “Nelson - by Ann Gordon This image of the Portuguese Water Dog, Fanny, is one of several of my favorite images from a session with her and her housemate, Jonah. The title comes from her owner's name. She and Jonah are competitive dogs involved in Water Trials reflecting the original purpose of their breed to aid Portuguese fishermen. Her owner wanted some studio portraits of the dogs to go with the action pictures she had from their trials. Most of the images included props from their competitions, but this image of Fanny shows the intelligence and humor for which the breed is known despite that Fanny is a very shy girl. She required a bit of time and patience before we were friends enough to share this expression. I love low key with dark dogs. Ann S. Gordon

3nd place: “Waiting For Customers by: Denny Weigand

"The image was shot at Fisherman's Wharf on the latest outing of the PdTG (Photo de Tour Gang), a group dedicated to going new places, clearing cobwebs in our creative minds, sharing photographic information with our peers and learning in the process, and finally having fun. The image itself was secondary, non-HDR, but had all of the vibrancy and color that I love to capture. The juxtaposition of a brightly lit area with a dullard looming in the background caught my fancy, and thus the title {Waiting For Customers} ".

NCPP Proudly Presents September 13, 2012 – Vijay Rakhra

How to Increase Your Sales By Offering Video Want to offer more products and services rather than just prints and albums? San Francisco Bay Area photographer Vijay Rakhra has found a way to double his bookings and has seen increased studio sales by offering cinematic services in addition to stills. Vijay Rakhra is a Photographer and Filmmaker in the San Francisco Bay Area. His studio, which offers both Wedding Documentary Photography and Cinema, is sought after for their work at Indian weddings throughout California. Vijay will share his experience with Indian weddings and shooting both photo and video as a single team. Newer technologies now allow for the convergence of photo and video. While he'll discuss some DSLR shooting techniques he'll focus mostly on how to add video to your list of services to help you gain an edge in today's market. It’s not as hard as some people think to offer some video. Differentiate yourself from other photographers who don't take the leap.
