May Presidents Message – Kevallyn Paskos

2013

Dear NCPP, Well, it’s that time of year again to pass the Presidential torch. As our elections are in June and the changing of the guards takes place in July, it will be an exciting transition in moving forward. As NCPP’s fearless leader, I have learned so much and grown so much as a person and professionally. There were some wonderful memories and lessons learned through it all. It has been a very rewarding experience and I am so proud of our accomplishments as a team and organization. May Guest Speaker – Caroline Winata Caroline shared her creative processes in great detail and how photographers can tap in to their true authentic self for creative inspiration and picking a branding to match our style and personality. Her personality was captivating, clever and ever so funny! Caroline has appeared in dozens of special, happy places, like Martha Stewart, Bride’s Magazine, The Knot, Style me Pretty, Green Wedding Shoes, and PhotoPro Magazine. She was also named one of Rangefinder Magazine’s Top 30 Rising Stars in 2012. We all enjoyed this very sweet and fresh perspective about life, treating people kindly and going after what you want! When not obsessed with her photography and all things beautiful, Caroline is also working on her womancentric non-profit, HelloXOXO. Congratulations to the 2013 Affiliate Communications Competition Winners! PPA's annual Affiliate Communications Competition is designed to improve affiliate publications and websites, as well as give props to everyone involved in producing these super-important communication tools. Awesome work Tom and Wayne for making such wonderful contributions to NCPP! NCPP is the only PPA Affiliate to place in two categories. Publication posted online or attached to an email at least 3 times a year. 2nd Place: Tom O'Connor Northern California Professional Photographers Focal Point Website designed exclusively for a PPA affiliate group or school. 3rd Place: Wayne Miller, Cr.Photog. CPP Northern California Professional Photographers People’s Choice Competition – NCPP was thrilled to have over 25 entries during our recent People’s Choice competition! This was the largest turnout of beautiful prints that we have enjoyed. April winner’s congratulations goes to…1st Place – Michael Van Auken - " Medley of Mele ", 2nd Place – Kevallyn Paskos – “If Wishes Were Horses” and 3rd Place honor goes to Lily Dong - "The Kiss". Congratulations on a job well done! Make sure to get ready for next month’s print competition and a Starbuck’s gift prize to one lucky print comp participant. Thank you so much for participating! Thank you for your support during my President terms over the last two years! I could not have done this without the support and alliances of my fellow members with NCPP. It was a complete honor to lead this organization and most importantly, the friendships created. It is with great confidence that our new board team will continue to set a course for a bright, new journey! Sincerely your friend and comrade, Kevallyn

“Don’t tell me the sky’s the limit, when there are footprints on the moon.” Michael Jordan NCPP Mission Statement: The Northern California Professional Photographers is an organization dedicated to advancing the business of professional photography. Our purpose is to create an environment amongst professional photographers that will inspire each of us and to help one another grow as business professionals and artists. 4

Preparing your image for "Projected" Image Comp This article will remain permanently in the Focal Point.

2013

1. Create a file that will become the background for your image that is 4,000px Wide x 2,200px High @ 200 pixels per inch. (20" x 11") This size fits our monitor and will be displayed at its optimal. 2. The color space can be sRGB or RGB1998. 3. The file type is a jpg with a Quality setting of 10. Total file size not to exceed 3.5mb. 4. You can apply a color or pattern to this layer just as you would do for a printed image that you would have entered previously in print comp. 5. Next prepare the image that you are going to insert over the background. The color space, ppi etc needs to be the same as your background layer. 6. Size the image as you wish in either a vertical or horizontal format. The image size must be at least 80 square inches. An example is 8" x 10". The image may be placed anywhere you want to put it on the background layer. The positioning of the image on the background layer will be part of your "Presentation" score just like with Printed print comp. 7. Add a stroke or any other edge treatment to the edge of the image you want, or not. 8. All images will be shown only with the background in the "Horizontal Format". This is the same way that PPA is handling it. The monitor will not be rotated for vertical images. They will be shown just like the example images on the previous page. 9. There is to be no photographer name or studio name on the image. 10. Name your file with the following convention: · Member's First Name_Last Name_Image_Title_.jpg (Use _ for spaces). · Example file name: Bill_Jones_Mount_Diablo_Sunset.jpg 11. More information for download or viewing at. NOTE: PPA Projected Submission Specifications match what is required for NCPP, except: · PPA requires your PPA# in place of your name in the file name: Example: 12345_Mount_Diablo_Sunset.jpg · Link to the PPA site for a video on “How To”: http://www.ppa.com/competitions/tutorials.php ENTRY RULES AND DEADLINES: · Fee: Cost per each image is $5.00 by Tuesday, (at midnight), prior to the Thursday meeting. Fee is to be paid via the NCPP PayPal link. · Images: E-mail images as an attachment, not imbedded, to lilydong888@gmail.com Limit of 30 Projected images allowed per meeting. This is at the discretion of the Print Comp Chair on a month by month basis. The Print Comp Chair may also limit the number of entries to 1 image per photographer if there are more than 30 images entered. · Late entries: Email entries and fees submitted after Tuesday Midnight or (Walk-ins accepted on zip drive) at the door, $10 fee per each image, with a deadline of 6:50pm the night of the meeting. · Incorrect entries: The photographer will be notified via email if their entry is not to specification. If the image is not returned correctly it cannot be entered.

“Medley of Mele by: Michael Van Auken Having heard that NCPP had been thinking about discontinuing the People's Choice competition because of lack of participation, it was great to see such a large number of entries last month. One of the things I have always enjoyed about People's Choice is that it allows us to go beyond the PPA restraints of a 2-D presentation. Yes, I could have used drop shadows in Photoshop to create a 3-D effect. (And yes, before putting together the actual wood pieces I did do that.) But being able to walk around the actual 3-D version of the finished piece, to be able to touch it, is a completely different experience for the viewer. As any original piece of artwork, this piece is one of a kind. All portraits begin with the subject. Joseph Mele's artwork has been described as abstract with a touch of the literal. Joseph could be described the same way. But there are actually many layers to Joseph's personality impossible to capture in a single image. I knew I would be using at least three images for his final portrait. I met with Joseph at his studio. He showed me artwork from his past in addition to his current work. A red abstract painting caught my eye. It expressed excitement and movement, which are both characteristic of Joseph himself. The painting also worked with Joseph's red sofa. We decided to keep the color palette simple, using red, black and white. Originally I had planned to use studio lighting. But on the day of the shoot, seeing the pattern of light on the wall caused by reflections coming through the window made me change my mind. The pattern of light became the first layer. Using natural light I had to up the ISO and shoot at 1000/sec in order to freeze the action. Joseph is almost always moving. In one portion of the shoot I had him jump up and down on the sofa to express his child-like energy. And as with children, this wore him out to the point where I could capture some of the more contemplative aspects of his personality. With Joseph's permission I also photographed a number of his paintings which I would later add as texture layers in Photoshop. Back at the computer I narrowed my selection down to five images, and finally to these three. In Photoshop I layered multiple images of Joseph's artwork using Soft Light blending mode. The images are printed on Epson's Canvas Matte. I ripped the edges of the canvas and mounted them to plywood panels. The three panels are floated above the background image (a composite of Joseph's paintings) with 1 inch wood blocks. Layers upon layers upon layers; just like Joseph. Final note: My finished piece "Medley of Mele" now hangs in Joseph's studio. And Joseph's abstract red painting hangs in mine.

2nd place: “If Wishes Were Horses” by: Kevallyn Paskos

This image was thoughtfully photographed with the goal in mind of capturing a relationship between a girl and her horse. Jamie and Blowtorch Betty have a sweet relationship as if they understand each other. Since horses typically have about ½ hour of patience during a portrait session, it was imperative to quickly capture as many interactive shots as possible. Horses will begin to get restless and misbehave if asked to stay still for too long. We worked quickly with late afternoon sun with a slight fill from a reflector. Once we captured a series of compositions and backgrounds, we came to this favorite hillside location with a meandering path and nicely colored canopy of trees. Not 5 minutes after this image was captured, Blowtorch Betty began getting fired up! Mom came to the rescue but we got our shot! Kevallyn

'This was a fall family photo session; both the Mom and Dad are busy professionals with three energetic boys. We shot this at a local playground, so the kids can play and be themselves. When I asked the parents to kiss, the boys did what they would naturally do...disapprove! It is one of my favorite photos.' Lily

NCPP Proudly Presents July 11, 2013 – Michelle Walker

2013

“Have it All Workshop” Synopsis: Money & Time Management Equipment Editing/Submitting/Copyrighting Images How & what to shoot for publication

Bio: I've been a wedding photojournalist for 13+ years (since my senior year at the Academy of Art University). While in school, I wanted to photograph worldwide conflicts. But then I interned for a wedding photojournalist and fell in love. I realized that I could capture weddings with the same raw, unbridled emotion that my mentors were using in their war photography. I was hooked... but had a dilemma. How to satisfy my passion for travel photography? (For me, one of the attractions of conflict photography.) I made a commitment to myself then & there - yes, I would photograph weddings with all the energy & passion I have, but I would take 4-6 weeks every year and travel to work on my personal photography. And I've done so every single year. How? I'll tell you in this talk...

May PPC Roadshow Review by, Ann Gordon

2013

The California Road Show Comes to NCPP Sunday May 19th was a perfect late spring day to be outside. But, a group of twelve dedicated photographers gathered from places as far away as Fresno and Redding inside at the Crowne Plaza in Concord to refine their lighting techniques with Master Photographer and the Lead Instructor for Portraits at Brooks Institute, Tim Meyer. It was an awesome seminar sponsored by the Professional Photographers of California and hosted by NCPP. PPC President, Marcy Dugan, and PPC Executive Director, Michael Collins, joined the group helping with reflectors and generally participating in the good times.

Tim is a great instructor and a very funny guy. He loves to play with lighting and after a very informative morning of show and tell we had the afternoon to try out some interesting and often times simple lighting setups with two lovely young ladies, Kordai Addy and Gezel Eberhart. What an opportunity to learn from such an outstanding photographer and what fun.
