DAY FOUR Presentation on Stockyard Institute The Hatchery
DAY ONE
The highlight of the day was the presentation from Kathryn Darnstadt from Latent De sign. It was refreshing to find out about her process and see that designers can have a sociopolitical aspect to the work that they do and can have an affect on the communities they serve and affect policy to improve the lives of people in those communities.
DAY TWO
We spent the day touring sites in South Chicago as part of Open House Chicago. South Chicago is not a place I would typically visit on my own because of the way it gets portrayed in media. It was great to see communities that have been historically left out of investment creating their own institutions and investing in themselves.
DAY THREE
I spent the morning walking through the loop and observing the historic architecture be fore hopping on board the Center for Architecture’s official boat tour. I think it was a great way to experience and learn about the architecture since the rivers of Chicago played such a central role in the development of the city.
DAY FOUR
The presentation from the Stockyard Institute was illuminating in the way it used community art projects as a way to engage the community expose young people to art and the city around them. The Hatchery was a great example of how a project can help people to become entrepreneurs and support communities economically.
