FROM THE PRESIDENT Thank you for joining us to celebrate the true spirit of community! This year, we will honor 126 volunteers who gave with true acts of kindness in service to the belief that together we can make a positive change in our community.

Today we celebrate the 34th Anniversary of North County Philanthropy Council’s Volunteer Awards Celebration. We gather as a community of volunteers, philanthropists, business leaders, and nonprofit professionals to hear stories of amazing volunteers changing lives through community service. These volunteers provide care for our neighbors in need of food and shelter, our environment and animals in need of care, our minds and hearts longing for creativity, our children yearning to learn and grow, and our friends looking for safety.

We know you will leave inspired to continue the work of these leaders, changemakers, caretakers, and community volunteers. We know if we want to change our community for the better, we have to do it together!

A passion for learning new things and telling good stories are why CBS News 8 Anchor Carlo Cecchetto got into television news, but it’s the relationships, both inside the station and out in the community, that have grown to mean even more to him. “This job has given me the chance to meet some incredible people and the opportunity to impact my community in ways I could have only dreamed.”

Thank you to the NCPC Board of Directors, our staff and over 240 members for another incredible year. Although words cannot express how much I miss seeing you all in-person, I am grateful for the strong connections we have been able to maintain and create virtually over these past many months.

It definitely confirms for me that the collective impact we have together has no boundaries. I am so proud of being a member of this amazing community!

Thank you to the 93 organizations who stepped up to honor their exceptional volunteers regardless of in-person or virtual yet again. A special thank you to Christy Wilson, Jolyn Parker and Callaway Golf Company and Callaway Golf Foundation for their invaluable leadership and generosity to our community. I am in awe! In addition to being a part of San Diego’s Number 1 rated newscasts, Carlo is involved in many causes. From fighting Alzheimer’s Disease to helping children with cancer, to raising awareness about domestic violence, he’s given time and energy to making a positive impact in San Diego and feels lucky to be able to help.

CORPORATE & LEADERSHIP AWARDS

2021 Corporate Philanthropy Award Callaway Golf Company and Callaway Golf Foundation “We don’t just work here; we live here, play here and are part of the San Diego County community.

Following the lead of our late Founder, Ely Callaway, Callaway Golf believes it’s important to build more than just great golf equipment; we’re also passionate about building great communities and making a positive difference in the lives of our neighbors—especially those in need. The Callaway Golf Company Foundation and the Callaway Golf Company Community Giving Volunteer Program are two ways we’re working to make a difference.”

The Callaway Golf Foundation is a private, nonprofit organization that has donated more than $13 million to charities. They have an excellent track record of identifying worthwhile causes and groups that fit its goals, via Grants, Matching Gifts, Scholarship and Dollars for Doers programs. One of the several organizations they support is Pro Kids Golf Academy and Learning Center (PKGA).

PKGA was founded in 1994 by former AFL/NFL player Ernest H. Wright, Sr. and a group of corporate and community leaders, who saw golf as a way to help underserved youth develop the character and life skills required to find success in school and in life. Ely Callaway was among this group and provided significant financial support via the Callaway Foundation to help launch Pro Kids. Callaway shared Ernie’s vision and commitment to sustain Pro Kids’ impact long term. The partnership was born, and the impact has been game changing – since 1994, over 25,000 kids’ lives have been transformed through values intrinsic to the game of golf – honesty, confidence, and respect.

Additionally, Callaway and Pro Kids take responsibility for their role in building a culture of golf that makes inclusivity, respect, and equity on the golf course a priority while advocating for our communities’ long-term access to play, academic support, and higher education. The partnership between Callaway and Pro Kids recognized this need nearly three decades ago, and as the game becomes more popular and accessible, both organizations will continue to be champions for progress and impact.

2021 Spirit of Carol Sigelman Award Jolyn Parker Jolyn Parker is a seasoned development and external relations executive at San Diego Oasis, an award-winning organization focused on successful aging, combating isolation, loneliness and sedentary behaviors prevalent in seniors by providing lifelong learning classes, encouraging healthy habits, and offering intergenerational volunteer opportunities matching elementary school students with seniors to improve literacy skills and self-esteem. Reaching almost 50,000 seniors throughout San Diego County with 2 dedicated facilities and partner locations around the County, Oasis will soon include a new facility in Rancho Bernardo.

From her former roles as CMO of a local nonprofit hospice to teaching the business of retail and marketing at a public university to running a multi-million dollar retail operation, she has decades of involvement in the nonprofit community. Always focused on getting the job done, Jolyn is passionate and unstoppable as a no-nonsense, thoughtful leader focused on integrity and quality in everything she does – at work, in her board service, and at home. She deeply believes in diversity, equity and inclusion work and understands the value of mentoring as her way of giving back. Using humor, mentorship and strategy talents to design and implement Oasis’ DEI and development work, Jolyn is a storyteller, sometimes drawing on her family stories, including her father’s Tuskegee Airmen experiences and both parents’ social work perspectives that have strongly impacted her work in helping others.

She is the proud mother of Marisa, an accomplished attorney and married to William, a long time C-suite executive, founder of Parker Revenue Growth Strategies and her trusted sounding board.

In addition to her work with San Diego Oasis, Jolyn serves as an appointed member of SDG&E’s Community Advisory Council, Board Member and past Chair of Barrio Logan College Institute, Board Member of Friends of Breakthrough Public Schools and member of the Economic Development & Advocacy Advisory Council of North San Diego Business Chamber. You will also find her most Friday mornings providing expert advice at Fundraising Fridays, an informal virtual hour with local colleagues in philanthropy, hosted by NCPC, Leichtag Foundation and AFP San Diego. We have a lot to learn from Jolyn Parker, and we cannot imagine a better way to honor Carol Sigelman’s spirit.

REMEMBERING CAROL Carol Sigelman was a true development professional.

She helped open the Children’s Museum of San Diego and grow the Palomar Pomerado Health Foundation. Carol served on the boards of NCPC and of Nonprofit Management Solutions. She was president of the Torrey Pines High School Foundation where she was known as the “godmother of the foundation.” She was also their first paid executive. Carol passed away in 2005. As a tribute to her, the NCPC Spirit of Carol Sigelman Award is given annually to a nonprofit professional in San Diego County who exemplifies the passion, integrity, wisdom and humor that Carol brought to all of us. We will always remember her motto, “Get the job done — and done well!”

CORPORATE & LEADERSHIP AWARDS

Lifetime Achievement Award Christy Wilson The Lifetime Achievement Award was created to celebrate individuals that give themselves to our community and bring people together in collaboration.

Christy is the first recipient of this award and NCPC is honored to celebrate the impact her leadership has had in San Diego philanthropy.

Since 1997, Christy served as the President & CEO of the Rancho Santa Fe Foundation. At the head of this growing organization, Ms. Wilson was charged with leading the development function, overseeing more than 450 component funds and creating philanthropic and leadership opportunities in the San Diego County region. Her notable accomplishments include advancing the work of The Patriots Connection which raises awareness of the needs of the military in San Diego County and provides financial support for those needs.

Additionally, in partnership with several members of her Board of Directors, the Rancho Santa Fe Women’s Fund was created in 2004. Since its inception, this fund has granted more than $4 million to more than 100 different nonprofit organizations.

Through the Community Impact Fund, which makes discretionary grants into the San Diego Region, the Foundation has granted nearly $110 million in the last 21 years, of which approximately $2.5 million were from the Community Impact Fund which benefitted North San Diego County in large part.

Christy and Rancho Santa Fe Foundation became NCPC members in 2001. Christy has played an important part in NCPC’s development, having served in numerous board roles including Vice President, President, and Past President.

Throughout the years, Christy has served on countless committees and speaker panels. She is a member of NCPC, AFP San Diego, Catalyst of San Diego and Imperial Counties, the National Partnership for Philanthropic Planning, and the League of CA Community Foundations.

A Step Beyond

Claire Scheper I enjoyed getting to learn more about marketing and development and working for a great cause like A Step Beyond. The most rewarding part was finding meaningful ways to share the inspiring stories of ASB students.

Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation Discovery Center

Shell Durham One of my most rewarding experiences at the Discovery Center is that I’ve learned about the history of animals that lived in the wild here. For example, I learned about the snakes at the center and how they survive in the wild.

They feed them frozen mice at the center in a box, so the people don’t see. I made flashcards on all the animals at the center that have a picture and tell people about the animal.

Hernan Cedillo Being able to see the impact of helping people has been rewarding and I’m always amazed that by giving just a little bit of my time, the impact on others can be so powerful.

Susan Bos My most significant experience volunteering is giving my grief, as well as the grief of other caregivers, a purpose.

We cannot save our loved ones from Alzheimer’s, but we can feel more useful, more prepared, and less isolated as we take on the challenges that we as caregivers face.

Carol Genf My contacts via telephone or Zoom are as rewarding to me as they are to clients. It brings me joy to be able to create a feeling of trust and understanding that helps reduce their anxiety and adds some moments of pleasure to their lives.

George Rhea My most rewarding experience was getting to know the families at the Neighborhood Exchange and knowing that the Neighborhood Exchange makes a difference.

Debbie Gemmill My most meaningful experience as a volunteer with Assistance League is the time spent with our Thrift Shop customers, getting to know them, and forming relationships.

I believe this helps build our community, one person at a time. Customers return with friends and family, knowing that they are valued and appreciated and will always be welcomed back.

Sondra Peppe When I retired and moved to Oceanside, I needed a purpose. Assistance League was there for me.

The opportunities to connect with children in need throughout Oceanside, Vista and Carlsbad was my ticket to “Happy.” My most rewarding year had to be 2020-21.

We met the challenges head on. We managed to switch gears and deliver many services virtually.

Wendy Morris I have been delighted in leading a team to manage and staff the Assistance League Thrift Shop for the last 2+ years. The development of valuable friendships comes thru the many efforts taken to make the shop successful.

I believe that my time has been well spent in strategizing/ analyzing actions the group of volunteers take to earn funds.

Abby Reynolds One of my most rewarding experiences with BSF was delivering over 200 backpacks filled with school supplies to four Oceanside elementary schools. The principals and administrators expressed such gratitude because they were so needed by the kids. It made me feel incredibly proud to be a part of BSF.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside

BGCO Executive Committee We are particularly proud of our Emergency Food Program, which began during the pandemic and served over 55,000 free meals to any youth under 18! BGCO Board Members and Staff stepping up to provide for our youth, their families, and our community throughout this most challenging of times has been nothing less than extraordinary.

Alice Olsen I love working with the San Marcos Boys and Girls Club.

There’s so much passion for making these precious lives feel valued. My goal in life is to make each child feel special and that’s what I’ve seen. I’m blessed to have the opportunity to support such a wonderful program.

Geraldine “Gerry” Conrad My most rewarding achievement came from working with Chris, a frustrated 2nd grader that didn’t enjoy reading. A routine of letting Chris read his favorite book, then encouraging him to try a new one, has significantly changed his attitude. A reading log helped him see his improvement. For a reward, he challenges both of us to learn and do origami.

California Center for the Arts, Escondido

Randy Shannahan I feel a great sense of accomplishment in assisting the Center to host outdoor events during the pandemic.

The drive-in events were a great success, and I played a part in them. Getting all the cars into the event and parked was a huge challenge, but with the other volunteers and head ushers it was accomplished. It is rewarding to support the performing arts and California Center for the Arts, Escondido.

California State University San Marcos

Sarah Aragon Throughout an atypical year, our annual Giving Day continued to be successful despite being virtual. 100% of our Foundation Board Directors made a gift and a Student Philanthropy Council member was 3rd overall for most donations as a Giving Day Ambassador. Both organizations continued to show resilience/commitment to our university.

Karen Wulfert I have enjoyed lending a hand to help Canine Companions connect and bring the community together through virtual events this year. Dogs have brought tremendous meaning to my life and Canine Companions has shown me how truly far-reaching the human-canine bond can extend. It warms my heart to support this wonderful organization.

Justin Frank After joining CCF, I wanted to increase our membership because I knew that was how we could make the most impact. I quickly joined the membership committee and we started hosting events. I was really proud when we hosted our first event and signed up a couple of new members!

Alan Lewis Many students that I worked with are graduating from college, entering the workforce, or going to graduate school. I love hearing about how they credit the robotics program in helping them with their academic and professional success. Many also help coach teams after they graduate. It tells me they think it is important.

Richard Lai Fatt Helping my students gain confidence, improve their academic performance, and, most importantly, see their potential is what makes showing up each week so satisfying and rewarding. The appreciation expressed by their parents is also highly motivating.

Theresa Akatiff As a mother, dentist and woman dedicated to making a difference, I’m grateful. When I stand before God, I hope not to have a single bit of talent left and say, “I used everything you gave me”. Born to addicted parents, I understand and appreciate making a difference in their lives. The girls have a special piece of my heart!

Catalent Pharma Solutions San Diego

Sara Stanley I would say my most rewarding achievement/experience with Catalent has to be my involvement in the Corporate Energy Treasure Hunt. For the Treasure Hunt, I worked with a group of awesome coworkers to go through the CSD site and find potential ways to save energy. We were able to come up with different energy-saving projects and ultimately reduced site emissions by about 10%.

Hannah Yellen Every time I show up at Coastal Roots Farm, I have a meaningful interaction with someone. These moments leave me feeling confident that I am spending my time in the right place. I feel part of a community that’s motivated to help people in need, take care of the planet, and educate younger generations to continue this cycle.

Isabel Anderson Volunteering makes me feel alive. I am a domestic violence survivor and CHW saved me. I feel like I belong to a community and CHW has become my family.

Community Resource Center

Katrina Dodson Revitalizing our Resale stores has been a constant volunteer opportunity. I’ve helped replace and update the POS systems, remodeled the interiors, re-worked the donation center, and do visual changes inside the store constantly. I love helping support CRC through the store sales and meeting the customers who love CRC.

Ruth Cornett Ruth has many significant achievements. Two of her most noteworthy were assuming the role as our lead system administrator where she researched, developed, and wrote a computer operating system on her own; and her second achievement was developing and organizing our resale and eBay storefront program.

Diabetes Research Connection

Sherry Ahearn In September 2018 I chaired the first annual fundraiser Dancing for Diabetes. We danced the soles off our shoes to the most amazing band with a silent disco under the stars. The guests had a blast, and we raised a lot of money for the cause!

Dawn Saad Looking for a volunteer job, I had an ‘aha’ moment when my mother had to stop driving. So glad I found ElderHelp and Seniors A Go Go. Now with the pandemic, I work in the Food Pantry—giving seniors access to much needed food and supplies. I am so grateful to the ElderHelp team for the services they provide to these super seniors.

Wendy Yates When my mom was at the end of her life, The Elizabeth Hospice made an impossible time bearable. I could not have managed without their guidance and kindness. It was my pleasure to provide respite to their essential healthcare workers during COVID through an Otter Swim Encounter at Nurtured by Nature.

Mar Delacruz I love everything about helping FACE. Once a puppy came to visit after his surgery while I was volunteering in the office. I have never seen a cast on a dog before. I can just imagine how happy the pup was inside. It was nice hearing from the owner and his thankfulness for FACE to save his dog. I am happy to support FACE in all the ways I do.

2021 Fallbrook Food Pantry

Jim Mauritz One of my many pleasures is volunteering at the Fallbrook Food Pantry, whether it’s with other wonderful volunteers or their amazing staff, I have really enjoyed my time helping our clients with their weekly food distribution as they checkout. I find great joy in the children’s smiles when they get their food or especially a sweet treat from me.

Those smiles are what gives me purpose and that’s why I give back to others.

Angela McNeece My most rewarding experience serving FDD has been participating in the interviews while serving on the Mac Peterson Scholarship Committee. To witness the passion the applicants have for working with our population, often holding down jobs and raising families of their own while going to school, gives me hope for the future.

Jenny Avalos I had the opportunity to volunteer at one of Girls on the Run San Diego’s site-specific 5Ks this past spring at Ramona Elementary. Watching girls in third through fifth grades accomplish a goal they had worked towards for 10 weeks—the completion of 3.2 miles—was an incredible feeling. I loved being able to cheer them onto the finish line!

Each day at the Food Bank is something inspiring, rewarding, and enjoyable. From all the people I meet who need food, the volunteers I work with, and the caring staff, I have 100 stories that make me want to come here daily.

North County Lifeline

Sam Brown My involvement on Lifeline’s development committee the past 5 years has been most rewarding. In that time, Lifeline’s development effort has grown from infancy into one of many bright spots discussed at each board meeting.

I’m especially happy to see the number of donors doubled from fiscal year 19-20 to 20-21.

Maralee O’Meara Tutoring young Pro Kids members, especially those who speak English as their second language, has been a volunteer highlight. Seeing the lightbulb go on when a math problem is solved, a list of spelling words is learned, or a page from a book is read aloud, is the best reward.

Erika Patrizzo Discovering Promises2Kids and being a camp connect volunteer has been the most rewarding experience of my life. It has afforded me the opportunity to meet and interact with amazing foster children. Lindsay Edwards One of my favorite memories from volunteering at STEP is the mattress giveaway. I was part of an all-women group that assisted clients with getting over 125 mattresses to their cars. The families were super grateful and smiled when they left, like a weight had been lifted off their shoulders. Volunteering at STEP is fun and rewarding.

Bunny McElliott A patient didn’t have reading glasses and started crying when I offered her a pair to keep. She was so grateful for this small act. It shocked me that such a small thing could make someone’s day. So many simple, but powerful moments at TCMC… What can be more gratifying?

Dana Albert My wife, Andrea, and I are most grateful that we stayed committed to our annual event even during the pandemic in August 2020 and May 2021. While many fundraisers were cancelled, we were so happy to raise and donate $15,000 to the Behavioral Health division in such a challenging environment.
