

Meet the Trustees

Phil Marshall Chair
Phil Marshall is an experienced non-executive director and charity trustee, with expertise in corporate strategy and governance. As well as chairing our Board, he is Chair of the Board of Trustees for a Multi-Academy Trust in West Yorkshire. He chairs the Governance Committee of a mental health advocacy charity in the West Midlands, and is Vice-Chair of the Audit & Risk Assurance Committee of a second MultiAcademy’s Trust. He is also a Vice-Chair of a children’s charity operating in Kenya and a member of a local Parochial Church Council.

Dr Pen Foreman
Vice Chair
Dr Pen Foreman works as a Senior Inclusive Heritage Advisor for Historic England, and was previously a national project manager for the British Museum. They are passionate about industrial heritage and archaeology, chairing the Board of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists and sitting on the council of the Association for Industrial Archaeology - with a particular interest in collecting Yorkshire bricks! Growing up in Wakefield, they have vivid memories of school visits to the early days of the Museum and stories of family members working across the West Yorkshire coalfields.

Patrick
Carragher Trustee
Born in Belfast Pat Carragher read History at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge. He started in the mining industry in 1981 as an official for BACM, the management trade union in coal mining and was General Secretary for 19 years. He joined the Museum Board in 2016 and served as Vice Chair from November 2021 to November 2022.

Alex Lynch Trustee
Alex Lynch is a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Advisor, and has established a successful track record advising small and medium sized businesses in all areas of finance, taxation, and commercial strategy.
In addition to sitting on the Board as a Trustee, he is the Chair of the Finance and Audit Committee and is an elected member of a local Parochial Church Council. When not at the Museum, Alex is a keen linguist and outdoorsman.

David
Wilkin Trustee and Chair of the Trading Company
As an experienced Executive Director, David Wilkin has worked in a variety of international manufacturing organisations leading on developing and delivering strategies for growth and sustainability. Having an engineering and sales background, David has been heavily involved with an assortment of projects and has a keen interest in preserving and promoting our industrial heritage for future generations. He is now semi-retired and holds a number of NonExecutive Director and Trustee positions within the Commercial, Social Care and Educational sector, which bring him in to contact with a varied and diverse range of community groups.

Sue Wilkinson Trustee
Sue Wilkinson grew up in Barnsley and her paternal grandfather was a coal miner. After reading history at Cambridge she trained as a teacher and museum educator and worked in the cultural sector for the whole of her career. She was Director of Policy at the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council and CEO of the charity The Reading Agency. She retired in 2019 and is now a Trustee of several museums and cultural institutions. She was awarded an MBE for services to museums and education and an OBE for services to literature and libraries.

James Wilson Trustee
James Wilson is an experienced finance professional with over 35 years’ experience in different organisations.
James has worked in the charity sector, higher education, criminal justice sector and Government bodies.

Liz Page Director,
Trading Company
Liz Page brings extensive experience of revenue generation via retail, catering and membership sales to support heritage visitor attractions. A former English Heritage regional Historic Properties Director, Liz has led numerous capital investment projects to improve the visitor offer at sites spanning the North and West of England. She has been closely involved in the development of NCMME's Masterplan and is excited by the opportunities it brings for the future.

David Dagger Director,
Trading Company
David Dagger is a former local government politician - Executive Cabinet Member, Wakefield Metropolitan District Councillor. He worked in both the private and public sector having a successful career in the private sector as a Liability Adjuster in the insurance sector and Contract/Sales Engineer for an international pump company. He had a successful career in the mining industry over a 30 year period holding various positions from Apprentice to Senior Manager.

Lynn Dunning Director, Trading Company
CEO of National Coal Mining Museum
Lynn Dunning has worked in the museums sector for nearly 30 years and has a proven track record of delivering improvement and innovation through organisational and people development. She is passionate about community engagement and social justice, leading the transformation of Barnsley Museums including the creation of a new museum 'by the people for the people' at Experience Barnsley, a finalist in the Art Fund’s Museum of the Year in 2021. She is currently CEO of National Coal Mining Museum for England.
