“Cancer Prevention and Control: Current State of Cancer Care for Racial/Ethnic and Vulnerable Populations” Otis Brawley, MD Professor of Oncology 39th Bloomberg Distinguished Professor Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine

Otis Brawley is professor of oncology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and 39th Bloomberg Distinguished Professor at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Brawley leads a broad interdisciplinary research effort of cancer health disparities at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, working to close racial, economic and social disparities in the prevention, detection and treatment of cancer in the United States and worldwide.

He also directs community outreach programs for underserved populations throughout Maryland as the Kimmel Cancer Center’s associate director for community outreach and engagement.

A former professor of oncology and hematology and deputy director for cancer control at the Winship Cancer Institute at Emory University in Atlanta, Dr. Brawley is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and recently received the Martin D. Abeloff Award for Excellence in Public Health and Cancer Control from the Maryland State Council of Cancer Control. The award, named after the director of the Kimmel Cancer Center from 1992 until his death in 2007, was established to recognize advancements made in cancer control practices that influenced the field of public health on a statewide, national or global scale.

A graduate of the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine, he completed an internal medicine residency at University Hospitals of Cleveland, Case-Western Reserve University and a fellowship in medical oncology at the National Cancer Institute.

“Comprehensive Cancer Control National Partners” Nikki Hayes, MPH

Chief, Comprehensive Caner Control Branch, Division of Cancer Prevention and Control National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Control Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Nikki Hayes joined the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control (DCPC) in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) in 2002. Before joining the CDC, she was a Biologist in the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where she managed the Institute’s DNA Sequencing Core Facility for more than 10 years.

Ms. Hayes is the Branch Chief in the Division’s Comprehensive Cancer Control Branch and currently provides senior level management and oversight for program development, implementation, evaluation, and consultation for one of the Division’s flagship programs, the National Comprehensive Cancer Control Program (NCCCP). Mrs. Hayes also provides management leadership to several other CDC programs that support cancer prevention and control efforts to include the Multiple Approaches to Support Young Breast Cancer Survivors and Metastatic Breast Cancer Patients program. This program’s purpose is to increase the availability of supportive services for young breast cancer survivors (YBCS), young women with metastatic breast cancer (mBC), and their caregivers and families by supporting organizations that serve this population. Mrs. Hayes is also responsible for the collaborative Networking2Save: CDC’s National Network Approach to Preventing and Controlling Tobacco-related Cancers in Special Populations program which supports a consortium of national networks to advance commercial tobacco use prevention and cancer prevention in populations experiencing tobacco- and cancer-related health disparities. In additions, she is also responsible for the NCCCP Technical Assistance and Training program which provides technical assistance support to comprehensive cancer control programs and coalitions.

Leslie Given is co-owner and Vice President of Strategic Health Concepts, Inc. a national consulting company based in Atlanta, GA and Denver, CO. Strategic Health Concepts (SHC) provides a variety of services to governmental, non-profit and for-profit organizations including strategic planning, organizational development, positioning and communication services, realistic and effective problem solving, special studies on specific health issues, and program planning, development and evaluation. SHC has worked with nearly all state and many tribe, territory and Pacific Island Jurisdiction health departments on their chronic disease program and coalition building efforts.

Prior to joining SHC in January 2007, Ms. Given was a Team Lead for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control, Comprehensive Cancer Control Branch in Atlanta, GA. Leslie has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English with a minor in Political Science and a Masters of Public Administration with a specialization in Health Administration from West Virginia University.

Wendy E. Barrington, PhD, MPH The focus of Dr. Barrington’s research is to evaluate to what degree social position, structures, and systems perpetuate cancer health disparities via stress, obesity, and related behaviors. Her research falls within two main schema: promoting healthy communities and racial disparities in clinical outcomes. She is using advanced methods including multilevel modeling and causal mediation analyses to explicate these relationships as well as community-engaged research to promote the health of vulnerable communities. In linking her research with teaching, she is passionate about naming and describing mechanisms of social inequity and discussing with students how these mechanisms manifest in the healthcare system and contribute to health disparities. She is also active within the School of Nursing and the broader UW Health Sciences to facilitate an institutional culture that fosters equity, diversity, and inclusion among students, staff, and faculty.

Kendall Brune, PhD, MBA Kendall Brune, PhD, MBA went to undergraduate school at the University of Missouri-Columbia, majoring in Health Care Administration, his MBA from William Woods University in 1995, received his professional Fellow from the American College of Health Care Administrators (1998), and completed his PhD work in Health Care Administration from Kennedy Western University (2006)Kendall’s graduate studies has centered on the impact of “Religion/Spirituality as it Impacts the Functional Health of the Elderly.” He has authored two books with LeLu publishing titled “Religion & Healthy Aging” and “Senior Care 2.0” respectively.

As a senior housing and care executive, I have operated independent, assisted, skilled and subacute care communities.

New ICC Board Members Biographies

Winona Hollins Hauge, MSW, LICSW Winona Hollins Hauge grew up in the Central District and attended Garfield high school. Her social work career has taken her far, including serving under two governors as State of Washington Commissioner for African American Affairs.

But much of that career was spent as Director of Social Work for the Odessa Brown Clinic in Seattle. Odessa Brown is closely connected to the community medical clinic founded by Carolyn Downs and Elmer Dixon in 1978 and named the Carolyn Downs Family Medical Center after Carolyn’s tragic death at age 25. In the interview, Winona speaks eloquently about her friend and about the legacy of the Black Panther Party.

Bill Ward Prostate Cancer Survivor Military Veteran and Retired Department of Energy professional Bill Ward was raised on the White Mountain Apache Indian Reservation in Arizona.

He was exposed to Agent Orange in the late 1960s during the Vietnam War, but it wasn’t until 2004 that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Today, Bill is cancer free, and he is enjoying a second career that takes him across the country as he shares his stories to educate and motivate veterans and underserved communities about cancer prevention.
