L atinos and H ealth Coverage: M aryland by the Numbers L atinos1 are more likely to be uninsured than any other racial or ethnic group in the U.S. +RZHYHU +LVSDQLF IDPLOLHVœ DFFHVV WR KHDOWK LQVXUDQFH YDULHV E\ VWDWH (see F igure 1). In M aryland: ™ L atinos have inadequate access to the cur rent health coverage system. In 2008, only about two-fifths (42.5%) of all Latinos living in Maryland had employersponsored health insurance, and one-tenth (10.2%) were covered by Medicaid or the &KLOGUHQœV +HDOWK ,Qsurance Program.2 ™ As a result, L atino families are at risk for uninsurance. That year, about two in five (39.1%) Latinos in Maryland were uninsured, and about one in four (24.4%) Latino children under age 18 had no form of health coverage.3 ™ L atinos are over represented among the uninsured. Although Hispanics made up nearly one-twelfth (7.9%) of the total state population in 2008, they represented about one-quarter (25.4%) of MarylandœV uninsured.4
