L atinos and H ealth Coverage: Indiana by the Numbers L atinos1 are more likely to be uninsured than any other racial or ethnic group in the U.S. +RZHYHU +LVSDQLF IDPLOLHVœ DFFHVV WR KHDOWK LQVXUDQFH YDULHV E\ VWDWH (see F igure 1). In Indiana: ™ L atinos have inadequate access to the cur rent health coverage system. In 2008, only about one-half (47.5%) of all Latinos living in Indiana had employer-sponsored health insurance, and about one-quarter (25.7%) were covered by Medicaid or the &KLOGUHQœV +HDOWK ,QVXrance Program.2 ™ As a result, L atino families are at risk for uninsurance. That year, more than one in four (26.4%) Latinos in Indiana were uninsured, and nearly one in six (15.8%) Latino children under age 18 had no form of health coverage.3 ™ L atinos are over represented among the uninsured. Although Hispanics made up 5.3% of the total state population in 2008, they represented 11.3% of IndianaœV uninsured.4
