L atinos and H ealth Coverage: C alifornia by the Numbers L atinos1 are more likely to be uninsured than any other racial or ethnic group in the U.S. +RZHYHU +LVSDQLF IDPLOLHVœ DFFHVV WR KHDOWK LQVXUDQFH YDULHV E\ VWDWH (see F igure 1). In C alifornia: ™ L atinos have inadequate access to the cur rent health coverage system. In 2008, only about two-fifths (41.4%) of all Latinos living in California had employersponsored health insurance, and more than one-quarter (26.6%) were covered by Medicaid or the ChildreQœV +HDOWK ,QVXUDQFH 3URJUDP 2 ™ As a result, L atino families are at risk for uninsurance. That year, more than one in four (28.6%) Latinos in California were uninsured, and about one in seven (13.7%) Latino children under age 18 had no form of health coverage.3 ™ L atinos are over represented among the uninsured. Although Hispanics made up nearly two-fifths (37.8%) of the total state population in 2008, they represented almost three-fifths (58.2%) of CaliforniaœV uninsured.4
