CONFERENCE RECAP REPORT

The National Council of La Raza (NCLR)—the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States—works to improve opportunities for Hispanic Americans. Through its network of nearly 300 affiliated community-based organizations, NCLR reaches millions of Hispanics each year in 41 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. To achieve its mission, NCLR conducts applied research, policy analysis, and advocacy, providing a Latino perspective in five key areas—assets/investments, civil rights/immigration, education, employment and economic status, and health. In addition, it provides capacity-building assistance to its Affiliates who work at the state and local level to advance opportunities for individuals and families. Founded in 1968, NCLR is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan, tax-exempt organization headquartered in Washington, DC, serving all Hispanic subgroups in all regions of the country. It has state and regional offices in Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Phoenix, and San Antonio. IN REMEMBRANCE The 2016 NCLR Annual Conference in Orlando began with a tribute to the victims of the worst mass shooting in American history. Orlando is a city proud of its rich and growing diversity and as a welcoming community to all including Hispanics and the LGBTQ communities. On the night of June 12, those communities came together at Pulse Nightclub to celebrate the club’s weekly Latin night. A night filled with celebration and unity was shattered by an incomprehensible act of hatred, contempt, and violence. In the days that followed this tragedy, the public began to see the names and photos of those 49 lives that were abruptly taken, the majority being Hispanic Americans. NCLR honors those who lost their lives, stands with those who were impacted, and stands with the city of Orlando.

Hate & bigotry ended your life but we will make sure people remember your names #LoveConquersHate

EDUCATION TOWN HALL Policy, Parents, Communities, and Schools: The Future of Latino Education The education town hall, titled “Policy, Parents, Communities, and Schools: The Future of Latino Education,” was proudly sponsored by State Farm and the Walton Family Foundation. The session featured United States Secretary of Education John King, Jr. as the keynote speaker, along with a renowned panel of experts in the field of education. In addition to hearing from educational experts, the audience also participated in the conversation through traditional questions and answers, as well as through audience clickers. The clickers polled the audience, allowing them to guide the conversation to specific areas that they wished to hear more about.

This is a pivotal moment. We know that Latino students now represent a quarter of our students in American schools. In fact it could be very clearly said that the success of the American education system is bound up inextricably with success of Latino students. —Secretary of Education John King, Jr.

ECONOMY TOWN HALL

A Force Unleashed: The Rising Economic Power of Latinas The economy town hall, sponsored by Citi and Prudential, focused on the growing economic power of Latinas in the United States. Featured speaker Nely Galán discussed the specific importance of Latinas in the American economy and the importance of Hispanic entrepreneurship and financial stability. The expert panel shared their opinions and views about working with corporate America, starting a business, developing a business, homeownership, and being a Latina businesswoman.

We are the number-one giant in this country. Financially, we are the sleeping giant. But we are not taking our power. I believe it’s because we’re not fully empowered. — Nely Galán, NY Times Best-selling Author

HEALTH TOWN HALL

Ensuring a Healthy and Equitable Start for Our Children Today and Beyond The health town hall, sponsored by Centene Corporation and Eli Lilly & Company, provided an extremely engaging discussion on key health concerns facing the Hispanic community. It included some of the health community’s most well-respected experts, including United States Surgeon General, Vice Admiral Vivek H. Murthy. Topics covered included concerns about the Zika virus spreading, mental health and emotional well-being, gun violence, the controversy surrounding antibiotics, and much more.

We have to focus on strengthening our connections with each other, strengthening the foundation of our communities. If we do that, then we will address that root cause of violence, which will ultimately have spill-over benefits not only for our health, but also for our education and our economy. —U.S. Surgeon General, Vice Admiral Vivek H. Murthy
