Harding - We’re the Bisons

Much ado is made about the Harding nickname, “the Bisons,” so we felt it would be helpful to explain from whence it came. First of all, our nickname was selected in 1924 by our student body, when the correct spelling was “Bisons.” There are several cases of athletic teams, both college and professional, from that era with the same spelling. We use the term “Bison” as an adjective, as in Bison Basketball, or as a singular noun, as in “Smith earned four letters as a Bison.”

Born: March 12, 1964 Wife: Kathryn Children: Zach and Mitchell High School: Chattanooga HS College: University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma - BS (‘86), East Central University - M.Ed. (‘90)

Tim Kirby begins his fourth season as head coach of the women’s basketball team. Last season, Kirby led the Lady Bisons to a 18-10 overall record and an 8-6 GSC mark. The team qualified for its second consecutive Gulf South Conference Tournament. The Lady Bisons had not reached the postseason as members of the GSC until Kirby’s tenure. In his three seasons as head coach, Kirby has compiled a 49-35 overall record and a 20-24 GSC record. He led the team to its first winning record in conference since joining the GSC in 2000; the Lady Bisons finished 8-6 in 2007 and qualified for the tournament for the first time in school history. Prior to taking the women’s basketball head coaching job, Kirby spent 12 seasons as the Harding men’s basketball assistant coach under present head coach Jeff Morgan. Harding won more than 20 games in three of those seasons, including a 21-9 record during the 2002-03 season. The duo led the Bisons to nine postseason appearances and four berths in the GSC Tournament. Kirby came to Harding after serving as the head coach at Carl Albert State College in Poteau, Okla., from 1990-93. He was the assistant at Carl Albert from 1988-90. Kirby earned his bachelor’s in physical education from the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in 1986 and his master’s degree in education from East Central University in 1990. A native of Lawton, Okla., Kirby and his wife Kathryn have two sons: Zach and Mitchell.

Shane Fullerton will be in his fourth season as the Harding women’s basketball assistant coach in 2008-09. He joined head coach Tim Kirby’s staff following a nineyear stint as Harding’s head baseball coach. Fullerton has helped lead the Lady Bisons to two consecutive Gulf South Conference Tournament appearances. During his time on the diamond, Fullerton directed his squads to five consecutive winning seasons and amassed 200 victories faster than any other Harding baseball coach. His 2002 team won 32 games including two victories in the Gulf South Conference Tournament, and the 2003 squad collected a school-record 34 victories. Fullerton was the Bisons’ starting catcher for four years. In 1993, his senior season, his .331 average led the team and he was named All-Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference and NAIA All-District 17. Fullerton became the first Harding player to finish his career with more than 100 hits and 100 walks. He also threw out more than 50 percent of basestealers in his last season. Fullerton is married to former Lady Bison basketball player Jama Holman of Lamar, Ark. The couple has three children: J. Paul, Pate, and Kloey.

2008-09 Season Preview

Newcomers Bring Depth, Height To Roster Just looking that the 2008-09 women’s basketball roster tells the story. There is a lot of new, a lot of old and a lot of height. Harding has a different look to its roster and not just because the list is missing four-year starting guard Kinsey Tucker. The Lady Bisons have nine new players on the roster this season, including three transfers. Still, the Lady Bisons are returning three starters from last year’s team that finished 18-10 overall and 8-6 in conference. Junior guard Kaitlin May, junior forward Stacy Owens and senior Catherine McMenamy, Harding’s lone member of the preseason All-GSC team, have returned for another season. Sophomore guard Leah Fugett did not start last season but received considerable playing time towards the end of the season. Head coach Tim Kirby said that even with the changes, his team has goals to return to the Gulf South Conference Tournament this season and finish the GSC-West schedule ahead of either Delta State or Arkansas Tech, two programs that are consistently in the running for national championships. Kirby said finishing second in the GSC-West would greatly help the Lady Bisons’ chances of reaching the regional tournament. Harding was picked to finish third in the conference. “One of our goals right now is to just get better every day,” Kirby said. “With nine new players, you can’t just be focused on [tournaments].” The Lady Bisons could easily be the tallest in the program’s 25-year history. In the past, Kirby said his team has struggled finding enough size to play in the lane, but the Lady Bisons finally have personnel to that need this season, courtesy of three 6-foot-2 post players: seniors Ashley Anderson and Ashley Ingle and freshman Lindsay Root. Anderson was a three-year player for Division I Arkansas State. Ingle, a native of nearby McRae, Ark., has transferred from Northern Arizona where she finished sixth in Division I with 99 blocks. She also averaged 11.8 points per game, good for second on the team. Kirby said Ingle is still recovering from shoulder surgery that she had at the end of the last school year. With the added height, new players and the position versatility of McMenamy and Owens, Kirby has the luxury of having multiple options and depth. Between injuries and other issues last season, the playing rotation was reduced to six or seven players towards the end of the GSC schedule. “The difference this year is that if we have an injury or something happens, we have the depth that we can cover it,” Kirby said. “Last year, we were just deep at certain spots. We’re two or three players deep at all the positions.”

of her time as the point guard. She had five or more assists five times last year and has averaged 3.2 assists per game for her career. Returning sophomores Kallie Bartee and Leah Fugett earned a good amount of playing time last season. Bartee averaged 44 percent from three-point range and scored 5.2 points per game. Fugett, called one of the most complete players on the team by Kirby, scored 14 points twice last year during conference play. Sophomore Makala McNair, a transfer from Arkansas State, averaged 20 points and seven rebounds during her senior season at Alpena High School. McNair is expected to contribute with her shooting from the three-point arc. Freshman Audri Garcia, a 5-foot-10 guard, should also receiving playing time. Freshman Sierra Rollins walked on at Harding and will also be a part of the Lady Bisons’ main rotation.

FORWARD

The Lady Bisons have the most experience at the forward position with two returning starters: senior Catherine McMenamy and junior Stacey Owens. McMenamy has started 84 games and has averaged 13 points and 5.5 rebounds. Entering the season, McMenamy is already seventh on Harding’s all-time scoring list (1,101 points). She has a chance to become Harding’s first four-year all-conference player if she earns the honor again this season. Owens began starting midway through last season and led the Lady Bisons in scoring with 13.7 points. She led the GSC in three-point percentage and was second team all-conference. She brings

the versatility to the Lady Bisons with the ability to score from the lane as well as three-point range. Senior Ashley Anderson transferred from Arkansas State, where she played 85 games and started 33 of them. At 6-foot-2, she will bring muchneeded height to Harding’s inside game.

POST Although listed as a forward, Anderson can also contribute as a post. During her senior season at Cabot High School, she averaged 18 points and 8 rebounds per game. Senior Ashley Ingle tranferred from Northern Arizona, where she had 99 blocks last season. Her season could be delayed as she recovers from shoulder surgery. Freshman Lindsey Root, also listed at 6-foot-2, will receive playing time as a freshman. She scored 1,046 points as a senior at West Memphis (Ark.) Christian School.

Owens, McMenamy Lead Lady Bisons Back To Postseason The Harding women’s basketball program continued its steady improvement under coach Tim Kirby. The Lady Bisons finished 18-10 overall to record consecutive winning seasons for the first time since the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons. Although the team did not reach the postseason conference tournament for the first six seasons in the Gulf South Conference, the Lady Bisons are becoming a more frequent guest to the tournament. Harding earned its second straight trip to the Gulf South Conference Tournament in 2007-08. Harding was 8-6 in the GSC West Division and earned the third seed in the conference tournament behind nationally-ranked Delta State and Arkansas Tech. The Lady Bisons fell 65-58 to Valdosta State and just missed a berth in the NCAA II Tournament.

Rhodes Field House

I

t is rare in the world of college basketball that an opponent looks forward to playing a game on the road more than at home. But for the opponents of the Harding Lady Bisons, a trip to the Rhodes Field House is often the highlight of their season. Home of the famous Rhodes Rowdies, Harding’s Rhodes Field House is one of the premier basketball arenas in the South. Bison fans regularly pack the facility and hold five of the top 10 single-game attendance marks in Gulf South Conference history despite only seven years in the league. The Rhodes Field House contains modern, well-equipped dressing rooms for the Bisons, Lady Bisons and visiting teams and officials. A suite of offices serves four coaches, secretarial staff, and intramurals. Approximately sixty percent of the 3,000 seats are permanent and chair back seats and reserved seating are available on the west side. The floor level seats are retractable which allow space for the two cross courts. Those courts are utilized for both intercollegiate practice and intramural games. As the home for Lady Bison volleyball, there is a primary court that seats the maximum number of fans and with the floor level seats retracted, there are two additional courts available for intramural play. Additional rooms for weight training and laundry equipment are built into the facility. Rhodes Field House was home court for the basketball Bisons from 1957 until 1976, when the Ganus Athletic Center opened. The Ganus Athletic Center served both teams for twenty-one years until the Rhodes was renovated in 1997. The World War II airplane hanger that became Rhodes Field House was designed and made for an airfield in France and bought as war surplus by Dr. George Benson. It was erected on the campus in 1949 for $124,000. At the time, Rhodes was a coach’s dream that produced a real home court advantage. It replaced the original campus gym better known as the “crackerbox gym.” This original campus gym was small enough to fit inside a regulation basketball court. In the early years, Rhodes was usually packed and loud which gave it a “big time” atmosphere. For a growing student body of 600 plus, it was not only adequate, it was super. There were no athletic 34 ••• HARDING BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDE

teams at Harding, only classes, intramural and “free play” occupied Rhodes Memorial. In 1952, Harding Academy started boys basketball and in 1957, the Bisons began playing intercollegiate games and the student body continued to grow. By the late 1960’s, Rhodes was inadequate and the Ganus Center was planned. In the early 1990’s, Harding’s enrollment passed the 4,000 mark. Harding Academy moved into its own new Harris Gym but continued intramural and free play demands prompted President Burks and the administration to make decisions relative to space needs. Rhodes was and is a campus landmark that holds special memories for many so tearing it

down and rebuilding met opposition. Since the Ganus Center is an ideal intramural facility, the decision was made to renovate Rhodes for intercollegiate basketball and volleyball. It also serves as an intramural game gymnasium while the bulk of intramurals and free play was moved to the Ganus Athletic Center. B.F. Rhodes will continue to be honored. A founding faculty member in 1924, the former history professor died in 1947. Rhodes was a popular figure around campus and a man who was very interested in all student activities. He was frequently seen at campus athletic activities, always encouraging the participants.

Harding University

Established in 1924 as a liberal arts college, Harding University, with an enrollment of more than 6,100, has grown into the largest private institution of higher learning in Arkansas. Accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and a member of the North Central Association, Harding attained university status on Aug. 17, 1979. Today the University operates through six divisions: the College of Arts and Humanities, College of Bible and Religion, College of Business Administration, College of Education, College of Nursing, and College of Sciences. More than 90 majors are offered in pursuit of 10 baccalaureate degrees including bachelor of arts, bachelor of science, bachelor of business administration, bachelor of social work, bachelor of fine arts, bachelor of music education, bachelor of science in nursing, bachelor of science in medical technology, bachelor of ministry, and bachelor of theology. Students may attend study-abroad programs in Australia, Chile, England, France/Switzerland, Greece, Italy and Zambia, as well as earn graduate and professional degrees in education, ministry, business administration, marriage and family therapy, counseling, physician assistant studies and pharmacy. The administration, faculty and staff are united in maintaining and improving Harding’s purpose and goals. Leading campus activities is Dr. David B. Burks, a 1965 alumnus who assumed the role of president in May 1987. Harding is acknowledged as a leader in

higher education in the areas of business, nursing and liberal arts. Its American Studies Institute and lecture series, which has featured speakers including Margaret Thatcher and Mickail Gorbachev, have received national acclaim from the Freedoms Foundation of Valley Forge, Penn. Situated on a 200-acre campus, the University is located in Searcy, Ark., (population 20,000), an industrial and trading center 50 miles northeast of Little Rock and 105 miles west of Memphis, Tenn. Athletics plays a vital role in campus life, and Harding’s facilities are among the finest in the South. The Clifton L. Ganus Jr. Athletic Center, completed in 1976, serves as the hub of the athletics program. The 82,000-square-foot structure houses offices, classrooms, locker rooms, a 25-yard natatorium, a gymnastics room, a weight room, handball-racquetball courts, and a 5,200-seat gymnasium with Pro-Turf surfacing and an indoor track. Adjacent to the Athletic Center is the 6,000-capacity newly remodeled First Security Stadium, which is encircled by Ted Lloyd Track, a 400-meter, nine-lane latex track. South of the Athletic Center is Jerry Moore Memorial Baseball Field, a lighted, grass-surfaced park that is regarded as one of the best in the state. East of the field are 12 tennis courts, intramural fields, and a golf practice area with a driving range. Rhodes Field House (3,000) has been extensively remodeled and became the home for the intercollegiate basketball and volleyball teams in 1997.
