Pushing. When they tell you to push, there are two schools of thought: hold your breath for 10 long seconds and push, or puff and push a little at a time. I’m leaning towards the latter. Something tells me that poor Hungarian power lifter was not breathing correctly. That, or the 148 kilograms he was trying to lift had something to do with his elbow dislocating. Elbows should never, ever, bend in the same direction as your knee.

Aquatics. First off, I can’t help but giggle at the men’s synchronized platform diving event.

Diver B: Cool. What color Speedos do you want to wear?

Back to the water and out of the gutter, there’s no reason why water birthing should not be considered an Olympic event. Especially if you happen to be birthing in one of those Chinese algae blooms. And you thought meconium was nasty.

One more Olympic truth: Michael Phelps does not look pregnant.

By Kay Pfaltz kpfaltz@mbc.edu www.basicnecessities.com Domaine de Trévallon Part II I continue the tale of Domaine de Trévallon, the first wine from the Alpilles about which Robert Parker ever wrote. Trévallon was also the first wine of the exceptional Les Baux region that Parker rated, and incidentally loved. Quality not quantity has been the Dürrbach’s guiding principle, as well as the reason Trévallon is classified as a lowly Vin du Pays des Bouches du Rhône and not a prestigious AC Les Baux de Provence. Most of Domaine Trévallon’s red cuvées consist of 50/50 Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, produced from rocky vineyards where nothing should grow. Unfortunately AC guidelines stipulate a maximum of only 20% Cabernet. Why such strict laws? Perhaps Bordeaux growers are troubled by a source of ripe, high-quality Cabernet outside of Bordeaux; and many winemakers of Provence certainly regard the introduction of an international grape in a local blend as sacrilege. But Eloi, interested solely in making top quality wine, refused to comply and the result was the classification of Trévallon as

a Vin du Pays—quite a blow as Eloi Dürrbach was one of the pioneer’s of the wine renaissance in Les Baux.

Domaine de Trévallon is all organic using no pesticides or insecticides, only sheep manure. Eloi’s philosophy is the less you do, the better the wine.

Nourish the soil organically. If you nourish the soil rather than the vine, the vine absorbs all the natural and interesting characteristics of the soil.

Said differently, terroir. Dürrbach allows nature to do the work. “If you depend too much on technology you get a uniform standardized taste.”

Then there is the famous Trévallon label. Trévallon labels have always been unorthodox and fanciful, looking like something Joan Mìro painted, when in fact the artist was Eloi’s father, René who was friends with Fernand Léger, Robert Delaunay and Picasso, as well as an artist himself.

Toward the end of his life, however, René hardly painted at all, and this is when Eloi asked him if he would like to work on designing the labels. Eloi gave his father fifty posters and he began drawing on them like the artist he had been, following his inspiration. He used colored pencils and each

year Eloi and Floriane choose one of René’s labels that is in some way characteristic of that year’s wine. While René Dürrbach died in 2000 at the age of eighty-nine, his presence is felt on each bottle of Trévallon.

The Wine Enthusiast calls Trévallon the greatest wine produced in the Baux-en-Provence region. But don’t rely on outside opinions, taste it yourself!

Brower, on assignment for the News Virginian, was in Lyndhurst when a man came up to him and told him where he might get some better pictures.

“You ought to go over to Nelson County,” the man told Brower. “They had some real flooding over there and I understand a man may have died.”

“I’ll never forget that. A man may have died.”

Brower had no clue how bad it really was. During his years in the Air Force, he thought he knew what storm damage looked like.

“I remember the floods in Holland in the early ‘50s and I thought that was something. But I was not prepared for what I saw in Nelson County.”

As he came down the mountain from Augusta County, he entered the Rockfish Valley. Police were directing traffic at the intersection of Routes 151 and 6 in Greenfield. Brower got as far as Woods Mill.

“I couldn’t get any further at that point” he says. “The highway was ... I don’t know how far down it was but we were standing way above where the highway had been.”

Compared to what he had seen in Holland, the devastation in Nelson County was much, much worse.

“That was spread out over a larger area and it was not the damage, either to the countryside or to the structures, that this was.”

Roads were washed out. Farm houses – even the large, sturdy ones – had slid off their foundations. Cars were covered in mud, if not buried in it. Dozens died.

“I had no idea how widespread the destruction was and what it meant for individual homes, motor vehicles,” Brower says. “It just, it was overwhelming.”

A section of US 29 was converted into an airport. The Rockfish School served double duty as a hospital. There were cots in the high school gym.

Because newspapers in those days printed in black and white, the images most people remember of Camille – those people who didn’t live through it, that is – were void of color. Luckily, Brower had taken his color photographs and converted them to slides so that he could share them with groups on the other side of the ridge.

“People over here were extremely generous in sending stuff over to Nelson County to help out and I wanted to show them what their efforts went for.”

Brower showed the slides to civic groups and church groups in and around Staunton. He guesses he gave the presentation about 30 times.

As time passed, those slides were filed away and set aside. It wasn’t until Oakland – The Nelson County Museum of History began preparing for its grand opening, that Brower’s slides were mentioned.

“I used to write stories every August about Camille and I’ve been through a lot of black and white photos over the years,” says former newspaper man Woody Greenberg. He came to Nelson County in 1972, three years after Camille, and is currently the Vice President of the Oakland Museum Board. “I never appreciated the depth of the destruction until I saw those Brower York photos.”

As part of the museum’s grand opening, interns scanned Brower’s slides and pictures for use in an exhibit. Woody says for people such as himself who never lived through Camille, the York photos tell a visually compelling narrative.

“He was all over the county in those days right after. Taking color [pictures], which some people think is a distraction, but I don’ think [it is], I think color enriches things. It gives you more of a realistic look at what people were seeing.”

These days, Brower is retired and lives in Staunton. He no longer takes pictures for a living but it’s still a hobby. He puts together a monthly newsletter for the Lions Club and he takes pictures for that.

Brower turns 80 next August. That same month, perhaps his most memorable subject, Camille, turns 40. For the first time since 1993, Frank Ott, and everyone else involved in the Wintergreen Nature Foundation’s annual golf tournament, will be flying without their pilot, Sara Ott. Frank’s wife, and co-founder of the largest fundraiser for The Nature Foundation, died back in March of this year.

“When I started working on this year’s tournament, I couldn’t imagine even sitting down with the committee without Sara,” says Liz Salas of TWNF. “Our staff has always called them Papa and Mama Ott.” To honor her memory, the annual fundraiser has been appropriately renamed The Sara Ott Memorial Golf Classic.

Frank originally kicked off the event in the early ‘90s when it was discovered he had previous experience running tournaments in Clearwater, Florida.

“My wife and I started this thing in ‘93 and that first year was, you know, a bit of a struggle. Because I wasn’t real sure how I wanted to do this because I couldn’t do it like I would do a PGA tournament,” says Frank.

In the first tournament, the Foundation raised a very respectable $17,000.

These days, those figures are nearly double.

“It’s the biggest moneymaker for the Nature Foundation,” says tournament cochair Jack Daly. The fund raised, he says,

“keeps a staff in place and what not.

I emceed last year’s tournament and was a complete novice at it compared to those who had been there from the beginning. I remember Sara Ott coaching me through it.

“I remember the first meeting (this year) just sitting there [thinking] ‘how in the world could I work on this without her, talking to her everyday?’ She started working on the tournament the day after the last one,” Liz says.

This year’s tournament will go on and as history has proven over the years, it should be a complete success.

But I know that for me personally, after emceeing just one of the tournaments, it will be tough not to glance around for coach Sara.

But as she used to tell me, it’s the team that makes it all happen. Agreed.

What the average high schooler is saving money for: weekend fun, a flat screen TV, a car, college. What Holie Mitchell is saving money for: the trip of a lifetime.

Holie, a junior, and about two dozen of her peers are planning to get out of Nelson County, out of Virginia and out of the United States next spring. The Nelson County High School Foreign Language Club, led by Sarah Ponton, is headed for a 12-day trip to Europe with stops in London, Paris, Madrid, and Barcelona.

The only downfall is the cost – $4,000 per pupil, minimum. The students raise money any way they can. For months they have been earning money working concessions at the John Paul Jones arena in Charlottesville, but they had to think of something else.

That something else is EuroNelson, a family-friendly event happening this month. It started as a joint-concert but has grown into something more with children’s events, a silent auction, food and yes, beer and wine.

Trey Mitchell, Holie’s dad, is in two bands that will perform at EuroNelson: TigerLily and Failure to Yield. Gil Somers, another parent, will also perform. The last band, Naughty Dynamic and the Design, actually features one of the students planning to go on the trip: Jacob Tal, a senior, on drums.

For $15 for an individual or $50 for a family of 4, guests are treated to a concert and a meal at The Mark Addy Bed and Breakfast in Nellysford.

The Mark Addy’s chef, Rafael Tal, is planning a combination of finger foods and other things that attendees will be able to eat as they go. The menu includes everything from miniature egg rolls to Mediterranean kabobs. Soft drinks, beer and wine (including a specially labeled event wine from Mountain Cove Vineyards with a label designed by yet another student, Katie Wood) will cost extra.

“Cancer’s just taken way too much,” says Susan who is working with Sheila to organize the Relay event. Sheila’s mother was an 18-year breast cancer survivor and her father died of cancer five years ago.

“All the folks here in Nelson County, just about everybody has been touched by cancer and we want to fight back.”

The goal for the June 20, 2009 event to be held at the Nelson County High School track is to form 15 teams and to raise $20,000. The event, Sheila says, is an opportunity for cancer patients and survivors to connect.

“People who are survivors know that it’s so much more comforting to talk to someone who has been there, who knows exactly what you’re going through,” Sheila says.

“This is just my way of giving back, giving people hope and letting them know you don’t have to do this alone.” NCL

12 years ago, Sheila Layton of Tyro was 26 and living on her own, when her doctor told her she had breast cancer.

“I did chemo for 6 months, did radiation for 31 days, had two major surgeries, it was tough. And being young, there wasn’t anyone my age I could talk to.”

Her left arm took 52 shots of chemo.

But what got her though the ordeal, Sheila says, was faith.

“My doctor and I decided it was 90 percent attitude and 10 percent medicine and I’m a firm believer in God and I believe God had other plans for me.”

Plans, like organizing Nelson County’s first Relay For Life event, a nationwide fundraiser benefitting the American Cancer Society. She and friend, Susan Stevens, had participated in the Relay event in Amherst.

Is there any place in the world as beautiful as Nelson County in the summer? In my personal opinion, I would say there isn’t. And, come fall, Nelson’s foliage is breathtaking.

New tax incentive for homebuyers

What the heck is HR 3221? While the 700+ page document may not adorn your night stand like the latest best read novel, the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008 should grab your attention, especially if you are considering making a home purchase. Perhaps one of the most talked about initiatives in this reform/ relief legislation is the home buyer tax credit. Prospective first-time home buyers, who have been sitting on the fence, now have 7,500 more reasons to buy a home. Here is a summary of the tax incentive.

What is the amount of the tax credit? The tax credit is worth 10% of the purchase price of the home, with a maximum credit of $7,500. The credit is in general equal to $7,500 for a qualified home purchase, whether the home buyer files taxes as a single or married taxpayer.

When must the home be purchased? To qualify, the home must be

purchased between April 9, 2008 and July 1, 2009.

Who is eligible to claim the credit? Eligibility is extended to a “firsttime home buyer” and is defined as someone who has not owned a primary residence during the three-year period prior to the qualifying purchase. The tax credit is for the purchase of a primary residence, a place in which a homeowner lives most of the time; it can be a house, town home, condo, cooperative, houseboat, or mobile home.

Individuals who own a vacation home or rental property may still qualify for the credit, as long as the other property was not a primary residence for the three years preceding the purchase of the primary residence.

What are the income limitations?

Home buyers who file their taxes as single or head-of-household taxpayers can claim the credit if their modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) is less than $75,000 (less than $150,000

Partial credits may be available. However, exclusions apply when the MAGI exceeds $95,000 filing individually or $170,000 filing on a joint return.

When can the credit be claimed?

The credit is fully refundable, meaning taxpayers will be able to obtain an additional federal tax refund up to $7,500 even if they have no other tax liabilities. Taxpayers will be able to claim the credit on their 2008 tax return for homes purchased in 2008. For homes purchased in 2009, the IRS will allow the purchasers to file an amended 2008 return to claim the credit.

Are there payback provisions?

Unlike any other tax credit, the firsttime homebuyer credit must be repaid over 15 years. You get your tax credit when you file the tax return; it will essentially be repaid as an additional tax on your tax return for the next fifteen years. For the maximum $7,500 credit, this works out to annual repayments

of $500 per year. The credit will also need to be repaid if the home is no longer the primary residence or if it is sold within the fifteen-year repayment period. Because the tax credit must be repaid, it operates like a zero-interest loan. The program is called a tax credit because it operates through the tax code and is administered by the IRS. Also like a tax credit, it provides a reduction in tax liability in the year it is claimed.

This legislation is good news for buyers and sellers. While the buyer gets the tax credit, the “motivated” seller may be a lot more likely to attract a “motivated” buyer. To better understanding how this tax credit may apply to you, please consult your lender, accountant, or other financial professional.

Phillip Kerl is a soccer coach. It’s what he’s done for the last two decades.

Elizabeth is a Kenyan orphan. Her mother died of AIDS and her father was the victim of a machete.

“The classic African nightmare,” is how Kerl describes it.

They don’t seem to have much in common. Except they do.

One of Kerl’s former soccer players, Jacob Snow, went to the orphanage where Elizabeth lives after he graduated high school. He came back to tell Coach Kerl and his team that if they raised $900, they could sponsor a child in Kenya and send him or her to a private high school.

Kerl, then coaching Nelson County High School girl’s varsity soccer, and his team decided to sponsor a girl. They raised $980.

Now Kerl is doing more. Separate from the school, and with help from the community, he is going to Africa on what he’s termed a “Sports Play Mission.”

“They’ve been rescued and they’re in this orphanage and they’re getting educated and that’s awesome and we support that,” said Kerl. “But my concept is to

go over there and let these kids play some.”

When Snow came back, he talked about the field the children play on – a dirt field filled with rocks.

“My hope is I’ll go out there and clean the rocks up,” Kerl continued. “I don’t have the funds to seed a field and I don’t know the circumstances out there for water and all that, but [I want to] at least make a better situation for them to play.”

He plans to teach them basketball, either building a hoop or buying one, depending on what he can find in Nairobi, the largest city in Kenya. And if all goes well, he’ll build them soccer goals, too.

Soccer, or football as it’s called in most of the world, is special, Kerl says.

“Well, the obvious is that it’s played everywhere. It seems to be a common denominator on this planet and I think the reason is, for one thing, it’s such a simple game,” the veteran coach explained. “A lot of coaches like to complicate it, but it’s a pretty simple game.”

“And really most kinds in the world don’t have balls. They’ll bind up rags and they’ll use an old milk bottle – anything to kick around,” he continued.

And he hopes to change that for these Kenyan

“As many shin guards and deflated balls as I can!” said Kerl excitedly.

Then, when he gets to Kenya, he’ll make a stop in Nairobi for the rest of the equipment.

“I’m really looking forward to playing soccer in Africa,” he said. “And I’m really looking forward to introducing basketball to these kids.” NCL

I had pulled up to the post office in year 1 of launching this magazine and saw a pick-up truck bearing a familiar sticker. I ambushed its driver and introduced myself. He was William Perischetty, Fordham University Class of 1954. I was Yvette Stafford, Fordham University Class of 1999.

We traded stories about Fordham and the Bronx, and he had mentioned something about being on the track team. I told him I worked at the radio station. We had a nice chat and I never saw him again.

When I learned of William’s sudden death this summer, I realized we had lost a sports legend. He was a member of the Fordham track team that set a world record in the two-mile relay (7 minutes 27.3 seconds) at the Los Angeles Coliseum in 1954. That led to a 40-year-long career as a track coach for Seton Hall Prep.

After a retirement home-hunting trip that took them as far south as Asheville, North Carolina, William and wife, Eileen, had yet to fall in love with “The 50 Best Places to Live.” That is, until they decided to stay in Charlottesville for the night before meandering to the Rockfish Valley.

“We ended up down here at Beech Grove and there was a sign up, ‘Lot for Sale,’” Eileen recalls. “We bought two lots that day.”

That was 1992. In 1997, the Perischettys built their home and retired to Winterhaven.

A couple who kept to themselves, neighbor Linda Heuer remembers the Fordham track star.

“Bill still had the trim look of an athlete, with a smile that crinkled around his eyes and a happy, kidding manner, and an unmistakable New Jersey–New York accent,” she says. “His students loved and respected him enough to name a playing field for him in recent years. I know he was pleased to go back for that dedication.”

To commemorate his life, Eileen, the president of the Winterhaven Property Owners’ Association, had suggested to Linda, the secretary, that any money raised could benefit the track and field program at Nelson County High School. Linda recently presented coach Richard Noles with a $470 check.

Though he had retired from coaching track, William was still an avid spectator, traveling to watch local track meets (especially when his grandson, Michael Dee, was competing). And if the sport was airing on the tube ...

“He never missed a track meet that was on TV,” Eileen says. “He would get very annoyed when the commercials would come on and he didn’t think they showed enough of the competition.”

And with 2008 being an Olympic year, William is quite literally in track heaven. NCL

Old answer: Let them sit in the garage until you’re forced to take them to the dump and then hope you can leave them there.

New answer: Recycle them.

“If it has a plug, odds are we can recycle it,” says Jude DeFrank, director of Crutchfield’s retail division.

The Charlottesville-based electronics retailer is bringing its recycling truck to the Rockfish Valley Community Center Saturday, September 6. For that one day, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Nelson County residents will be able to recycle free of charge up to five pieces of old, broken or simply unwanted electronic items per person.

“Just about anything that the garbage guys won’t take,” DeFrank said.

Like that computer mouse that hasn’t worked since 1992.

The old junk gets separated into three common components – metal, plastic and glass – and gets repurposed into new electronic components.

When the local division of Crutchfield started recycling electronics two years ago, their goal for the first year was 20,000 pounds. Since August of 2006, DeFrank and the company have recycled more than 800,000 pounds of old electronic equipment.

Most of the electronic equipment shouldn’t even be in the dump, explained DeFrank, because it contains hazardous materials like lead and mercury.

“If that gets into our groundwater system, it could poison our groundwater,” he said. “So this is an effort just to keep our environment just as clean as we possibly can.” NCL

Dave and Karen Holm have alpacas, horses and a cat at home. At work, their animals run the gamut from dogs to horses.

Seven years ago, the husband and wife opened a practice in Cooksville, Maryland, Karen’s hometown.

“It was, at that time, a rural community. Not quite as rural as [Nelson], but a rural community,” said Dave.

“And by 2007, we were in the suburbs of Baltimore.”

When the couple realized their lives were flying by at too quick a pace, they decided to look for somewhere else to go. They landed in Nelson, closer to Dave’s Harrisonburg hometown, and took over Dr. Ligon’s old practice.

“We were just kind of caught up in the rat race of the east coast and wanted to do something a little different,” explained Karen. “So here we are.”

“To hopefully fill Dr. Ligon’s shoes and make it a good practice like he had going,” Dave said.

Dave is technically the business manager, so he’s in charge of all the renovations and upgrades going on.

First on the list is the renovation of the practice’s equipment. The Holms are getting new equipment.

They’ll have complete blood analyzing capabilities, laser surgeries, gas anesthesia machines and a new X-Ray room.

Next up are cosmetic renovations. Dave plans to get some new flooring at the very minimum.

But Dave is a doctor, too. Although not a licensed practitioner in the Commonwealth, he studied a more nature-based path of medicine and often helps Karen, the primary veterinarian, with questions about nutraceuticals and homeopathic care techniques.

Karen – who jokingly says she’s never been bitten, but scratched a plenty – is currently doing both in-house doctoring and the occasional farm- and house-calls.

“We’re doing horse vaccines, this week we’ve seen

sheep and a cow,” recalled Dave. “And of course, we do house calls when it’s really necessary for people who are infirm or can’t get out.”

But before their second year, the Lovingston vets hope to have a second veterinarian, one who specializes in large animals.

“The thing we get caught up in having one doctor would be if she’s in surgery and we get an emergency on the farm,” Dave said of his animal doctor wife.

“That would be difficult so we definitely need a second doctor.”

So far the couple is enjoying the more relaxed style of living here in Nelson, although Karen, who used to work with exotic animals like tigers and monkeys is worried about one thing: “Apparently in the fall, there’s lots of bear attacks,” she speculated nervously. “So we’re waiting on those.” NCL

Here We Go Again It is does not take a genius to figure out that with the increasing population moving into rural communities across the eastern seaboard that one common denominator exists for life and the absence thereof – water. From my point of view, no other natural resource is more at stake to this influx of growth in our communities. The lack of sufficient rainfall and our low or non-existent streams in this these past few summers show us both visually and vividly that there is a problem, but the real problem lies beneath the soil surface in the bowels of an underground labyrinth of cracks in a solid granite plate. Like an underground steel trap, set, and ready to close, these underground water tables go mostly unnoticed and, upon springing, will make the current oil crisis cower in its wake (see Atlanta, 2008). Here are some tips at preserving a common glass of water for all generations to come.

Drip irrigation is used far and wide by the nursery, orchard and vineyards around the globe. The reason is simple – it surgically applies water directly to the root zone and, if installed beneath the soil surface, all but eliminates evaporation (a major loss of water). To install a typical system as is found in the orchard and vineyard industry will not break the bank and will save water and improve the quality of all of those green investments

that decorate your landscape. Your local home improvement store or garden center can help.

Moisture gels are gaining in popularity across the horticulture industry. These Jell-O-like polymers soak up water and effectively store it for the plant for future use. As the plant dries out, it pulls the water from the reservoir thereby greatly reducing the need for more frequent watering. In particular, container gardens use substantially less water when these gels are incorporated into the media.

As much as we don’t want to admit it in this region, lawns go dormant for a reason – it is the grasses’ response to drought. Dead as it may seem, a good stand of grass that is properly fertilized, limed, weeded and has a nice bed of deep rich topsoil will indeed renew its vigor, strength and yes, color once we reach the cool nights of October. Live with it and move on.

Newer model homes typically are equipped with improved standards of conserving water such as low volume flush toilets, smaller diameter plumbing (to reduce excess water usage in waiting on hot water), low volume dishwashers and improved shower heads are just some of the newer innovations that use much less water than the older models. with these installed, the user must still exercise responsibility in how they use them. Taking a bath versus a shower, washing a part-load versus a full load of dishes or clothes, properly servicing hot-water heaters so that they continue to operate at their potential are just some of the ways that water can be lost or conserved – it becomes a factor of our desire or lack-thereof to do it.

As much as you would like to ‘water’ that chrome-tired gas guzzler sitting in your driveway, minimize it. For those times that we truly need to visit our local car wash, locate one that uses reclamation

systems to significantly reduce their water consumption on an annual basis. If all car washes chose to migrate toward this trend in the industry, the environmental impact could be huge.

Obviously there are many other things that can be done. Take it upon yourself to not be forced to react, but instead act while there still is a water table to act upon. Denial that this equation exists in our local rural communities truly shows ones lack of awareness in this increasingly volatile system.

Dear Dr. Cole, I want to lose weight but I’m overwhelmed by the information that is out there. What should I do?

Losing weight and keeping it off is a very difficult thing to do. It feels like all the cards are stacked against us. At restaurants the portion sizes are excessive. Advertising for snacks, sodas, and unhealthy foods are everywhere, as are ‘lose weight quick’ products. New diets guarantee weight loss.

Weight loss only happens when a person burns more calories than they consume. Then the body begins to burn fat energy stores. This energy balance can be accomplished in 3 ways: taking in fewer calories, burning more calories, or both (this is best.)

A gram of carbohydrate contains 4 calories, as does a gram of protein. A gram of fat, however, contains 9 calories. So foods that are high in fat contain more calories per serving than foods that are lower in fat.

Reading food labels can ensure that your food choices contain a good balance of carbohydrates, protein and fat.

We need to burn about 3500 calories to lose 1 pound of fat. Walking or running 1 mile burns about 100 calories. Most cans of regular soda contain about 150 calo-

ries. Knowing where your calories come from can help you make decisions about where you can cut back. For example, if you just cut out 2 cans of soda a day and walk 2 miles a day you will lose 1 pound a week. Making additional changes can lead to more weight loss.

Weight loss does not come easily but if you make it a priority it will happen.

Honestly analyze your eating habits to see where you can make healthy adjustments. It is important to eat regularly so don’t skip meals. Read the Nutrition Fact Labels that are on most foods and tell you about appropriate portion size, as well as fat, protein and carbohydrate content.

Increase your activity level building up to at least 30 minutes at least 4-5 days of the week. If you make exercise fun you will be more likely to stick with it. Talk to your doctor for advice on nutrition and exercise.

The Weak Link I was visiting my parents recently and noticed 2 pound dumbbells in my father’s easy chair. TV watching and exercise can go together! Here’s a way to sit and exercise- let’s strengthen the wrists. When we exercise, rarely do we devote time to our wrists. However, poor wrist strength can be the weak link in your game whether it is golf or tennis. It can be the weak link trying to open a jar, lifting a jug of milk, weeding a garden or even typing on the computer. Luckily for us, it is also easy to train starting with a can of soup, light (12lbs) dumb bell or elastic exercise tubing.

Here are a few exercises to try. Seated in an arm chair with forearm supported by the armrest but with your hand and wrist over the edge. 1) Wrist flexion: your palm is facing upward holding a can of soup.

Raise and lower the can slowly. 2) Wrist extension: your palm facing the floor, raise and lower the can slowly. 3) Wrist radial deviation: Turn the hand so your thumb is pointing upward and slowly raise and lower the can. 4) Pronation and supination: Turn the can up and down rotating the forearm slowly. 5) Ulnar deviation: standing with your arm at your side and leading with your pinky finger, move the can and

Treat Yourself! only your hand out to the side. How many repetitions should you do? Start with a light weight and perform the exercises slowly 8-15 repetitions. Do one round of each exercise allowing different muscle groups to rest and then repeat another set as long as there is no pain.

It is better to start with low repetitions and then each week add a couple more to your set. The wrist muscles are long and relatively small muscles compared to other muscles in our body and to avoid injury it is prudent to start with low reps and weights and gradually build up.

In addition, pushups are another method to strengthen the wrists. If you have a history of osteoporosis, this is a weight bearing exercise so it is a great one for building bone strength. So, keep your soup can or weights in your favorite chair and have fun working on the weak link!
