Never mind that the sun is going down and temps are falling into the 50’s. In Adam’s world, this is a great time to run down the field and splash around in a cold creek. And it’s even better when you’re wearing your “town” shoes. That way mom gets to scrub out the sand when she should be loading the dishwasher.

And in Adam’s world, if it’s after dinner and it has just started to sprinkle, it’s a great time to go outside and run back and forth between the log pile and the camp fire yelling “Run! Run! Run!” And that banana that’s halfway in his mouth? Adam hands it off to Jerky, like in a relay team.

Now that the weather is warming up, we’re grilling outside more.

This is where we as a family sit and relax to enjoy the peaceful sounds of Adam banging on the metal wash tub that somehow has not found its way back to daddy’s shed. Meanwhile, Peyton’s in her scooter-walker-thingy and loving every minute of it.

We can only imagine what it will be like when Peyton starts walking and Adam recruits her as an accomplice. After all, they share a common

enemy: parental authority. But there’s a part of me that cheers on the youthful rebellion. That seems to be the thing to do these days.

I saw a happy gang of kids walking down the highway back to their homes down the road from us. I don’t think any of them were dressed for the weather and some of them may have been barefoot. They weren’t even cold. Just natured.

Identifying Grape Varieties Part II When identifying grape varietals remember to use all of your senses— not simply your sense of taste. While color may be the least fun part of “tasting” it can nonetheless give a clue to the grape. Lighter varietals include Gamay and Pinot Noir (and a whole host of regional grapes, but we’ll stick with the international varieties) while a dense, dark color may indicate Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah or Malbec. Color can speak of oak and also age. White wines gain color as they age, whereas reds lose color, changing from purple to garnet to bricky to brown. It’s not uncommon for some of the great, age-worthy reds and whites to end up nearly the same pale, clear, brownish color.

Next comes the smell of the wine, or nose. I’ve devoted whole articles to the nose of a wine, some indication of how important I feel this step is. Essentially, we are able to perceive taste because of the hundreds of thousands of nerve cells, found in the olfactory area at the top of the nose, which are far more discriminating than the mere

ten thousand or so taste buds on our tongues. To understand the importance of smell, just remember, when you’ve a cold, you can’t taste.

Sauvignon Blanc – When identifying white wines by nose alone, Sauvignon Blanc is a good place to start. The smell is sharp and piercing and reminds one variously of grass, gooseberries, nettles and yes, cat’s urine. Because of its expressive nose, Sauvignon Blanc is one of the first varietals tasters learn to identify.

Sauvignon’s flavor compounds, like the grassy methoxypyrazine, are being researched by the wine industry and may one unfortunate day be created artificially and added to cheaper wines. Because the Loire is Sauvignon Blanc’s original home, try beginning with a good Sancerre. Reverdy Sancerre, 2009 – Look for mineral notes, together with the hallmark grassiness and racy sharpness. This is one classic wine of which I never tire, and it’s never out of style. Pair with goat cheese, river fish or oysters.

Good all year, but a bit of heaven on a warm spring evening. $20.

Pinot Noir – While often called

the most elusive of grapes, Pinot Noir is easily identifiable by nose alone.

When you become really proficient at identifying varietals, you’ll be able to discern whether the Pinot is from the Willamette Valley or northern California or New Zealand…or Burgundy.

Begin by noticing its light color which turns bricky quickly. Next look for the hallmark cherry, raspberry and violet notes. Older Pinot Noir has a funky, barnyard nose that contrary to what it might seem, smells divine…and don’t be surprise if you find yourself seeking it out.

Medici Pinot Noir, Estate East Block, 2003 – This gorgeous wine smells and tastes to me like a beautiful, aged Burgundy, but in fact comes from Oregon. With layers of complexity it has soft notes of cherry and spice, combined with a delicious earthiness that speaks of terroir. Elegant and smooth, you’ll think you’re drinking a bottle twice the price, but the good news is: $27/bottle, which in the world of good Pinot Noir is a beautiful bargain!

Maybe you’ve been to summer camp before, the place where you made S’mores around a fire and savored the temporary but consuming taste of freedom.

If this is the summer camp you remember, then you definitely weren’t at Camp David.

At Camp David you learn how to set your internal compass by traveling the world, you start getting creative in order to survive the seasons, and in your free time you take part in extra-curricular activities that dub you a legend.

Living in Yonkers, New York at the age of eighteen, David Curly only wanted one thing, “To be free from changing my eight sibling’s diapers,” he said. According to David, this pungent task drove him to enlisting in the Air Force, which relocated him across the world to “a strange little place called the Philippines”, where women of questionable reputation had medicinal check-up cards and if you were rich enough you could afford toilet paper. It was here he said he stumbled into El Rancho Grande, a brothel where he lost a part of himself that he never found himself missing again.

So how did David Curly end up in Nelson County?

“One weekend a friend of mine said, ‘Let’s go to the mountains’,” and it was as simple as that. “He had a car and I didn’t,” David said with a big smile. Little did he know this backpacking trip through the Blue Ridge Mountains wouldn’t be coming to an end anytime soon.

While at Camp, David’s list of survival skills doesn’t include keeping your laptop close or your BlackBerry charger handy. In fact, the normal necessities most Americans consider vital to their everyday life are luxuries David Curly doesn’t have the lucky misfortune of depending on. Instead, he just worries about two things: what he’s gonna eat and where he’s gonna sleep.

The only food David actually buys is the canned dog food he gets for his four dogs. His green thumb is what accounts for all of the food he eats during the year, and he grows this assortment of veggies in the green house and cold frame that he built beside his house.

“I eat more during the summer than in the winter, but I grow everything from collard greens to purple mustard, carrots, tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, parsnip and even salsify…,” he paused for effect, “Aren’t you gonna ask me what salsify is?”

“It’s a plant that’s root tastes like oysters.”

Apparently even at Camp David you indulge in fine delicacies.

Along the way David upgraded from a tent to the two-story house he built with his bare hands. With clear plastic tarp for walls and wooden framing, it’s more like a camper’s cottage. The only running water he

has is the river that runs by his house; it’s cool and refreshing, but you can’t change the temperature. His heating system doesn’t consist of propane or even a fireplace, but rather a 4-keg boiler system he created and constructed himself that heats his upstairs bedroom from the floor below. When the three hundred dollar annual heating bill is too much for his winter wallet, all he has to do is use his hot-water pillow that he made out of metal pipe that’s ends are welded shut. Sleeping with this bad boy keeps him warm throughout the winter for a grand total of only forty dollars a season.

Many years ago David worked at Black Rock Market for some spare change and a ski pass to Wintergreen Resort. “I had my own skis but I couldn’t afford the lifts,” he said.

After a while, this hobby became too expensive and he was forced to find another way of passing the time. It was at this point in his life that David Curly bought his first pair of roller skates at a flea market.

“I tried skating down Wintergreen Mountain once,” David boasts. And he would have made it if he hadn’t gotten pulled over by the Police.

“They gave me a warning for no brakes and no direction signals.”

So what made this newbie skater start attempting his parking lot pirouettes?

“I don’t know, I was bored and they helped me move around quicker.

I was working at Valleymont (now Wintergreen Grocers) and they sorta drew people in. It’s not every day you get wrung up by someone in roller blades.”

But skating isn’t the only trick he’s learned over the years. After getting into a fight with one of the bigger campers in Nelson County, David was talked into taking a class on self-defense. Tai-Kwan-Do classes are now a weekly event that keep his sixty-three year old bones nice and limber. And if you were lucky, back in the day you might even have seen him dressed up as a witch on Halloween, zip-lining off of the car wash in front of the Blue Ridge Pig. Thirty-six years ago David Curly arrived in Roseland with nothing but a tent and an open mind, and as time passed he literally built himself a life from the ground up. After all the years and the many miles through the terrain, David said he would never leave his home in Nelson County.

“It would have to take a lot of money. I’d have to relocate my dogs.”

nelson’s NETS Most students in Nelson County are involved in some kind of extra-curricular activity. There’s the FFA. And the drama club at the high school. There are sports and arts of every kind. But one activity in particular is growing at a rapid pace – NETS. That’s “Nelson Express Travel Soccer.” Since 2008, NETS has been growing and looking for more and more passionate soccer players – boys and girls. Last fall, there were three girls’ teams and two boys’ team on the league, which plays as part of the Skyline Club Soccer League. The younger teams play fall and spring seasons, but most of the older teams’ players are on school teams for the spring season so they stick to the fall.

Girls’ coach Bryan Ferren said that he played soccer growing up and while the Nelson Rec league was a wonderful place for her players to learn the skills they needed to play the game, NETS gives young soccer players with a true passion for the sport an outlet.

“We wanted to have the girls begin to play together as a team in a more competitive environment where they could travel a little bit to play girls from other areas and continue to grow,” said Bryan, who coaches the U-13 team.

This year all the players have home games at the new travel soccer field located at Rockfish Elementary School that was built and paid for primarily by

donations from family members of the players and the Nelson community. The players are able to do so much thanks in large part to Nelsonians.

Jeff Harris is this year’s president of NETS and has been a coach as well as a parent involved with the organization so he sees things from all angles.

“It takes a higher level of commitment to play travel soccer and I think it’s good for kids to have that opportunity if they should choose to pursue that path,” said Jeff. “And from a parent’s perspective, it’s a wonderful experience for both of my kids to have the opportunity to pursue a sport that they love to play and meet so many different people. It helps keep them focused and challenged.”

His son is a senior at Nelson High School who plays varsity there as well as on the NETS team, and his daughter plays on Bryan’s team and goes to Nelson Middle School.

Alyssa Harris started playing NETS soccer two years ago after coming to tryouts with a cousin.

She said that even though you have to do a lot of running, it’s totally worth it.

“You have to learn to work together and function as a team and learn how the rest of your team members play together,” said 12-year-old Alyssa, who usually plays defense. “And I think it’s just fun to be with my friends and play on a team.” NCL

By the time you read this article, most everyone in Nelson County will have their gardens planted and vegetables already popping up through the soil. Up here in Love, however, we have learned that planting too early will cost us in time and money.

Last year we had a killing frost on May 22nd and it’s a heartbreak to walk out to the garden only to see your tomato plants

and potato vines wilted and black. So we wait out the fickle mountain weather and plant late.

Raising a garden is one of the most satisfying tasks I’ve undertaken since moving to Virginia.

Gardening requires a lot of time and effort but once you sit down to a home cooked meal of fresh roasting ears, baked Kennebec potatoes, snap beans with fatback and thickly sliced tomatoes, you

know that all that digging in the dirt was worth it.

In recent years I’ve noticed there are a fair number of people living in town that have dug up portions of their yards to plant little food plots of their own. “Victory gardens” of the past are making a comeback not because store bought vegetables are scarce, but rather pricey. Have you seen what one green pepper is bringing these days? People are also more health conscious and want food that hasn’t been sprayed with insecticides and laden with preservatives. Growing your own vegetables gives you control over what is set on the table for you and your family.

I didn’t start out being militant about organic gardening but over the years it just evolved. We used to spray with the best of them, trying to rid our plants of those pesky pests that seem to appear as soon as the vegetables do. But the more we dusted, the hardier the bugs got.

Then a book was given to me about the effects of continual use of pesticides. It stated that pests become resistant to the poison and one must keep changing the types of spray, using more and more to get the same results. In the process, the poison also kills the “good” bugs such as praying mantis’, true ladybugs, and also toads which eat their fair share of garden pests. Because it takes longer for these to recover and make a comeback, the bad pests gain a foothold and take over. It’s a vicious cycle that we decided to end. I began picking the potato bugs off by hand each morning, snipping off the leaves that had eggs laid on them. We called a local store that sold natural products and found a spray that actually worked to kill the pesky pests and didn’t bother the “good” bugs.

Also someone told us that if you mixed a little dishwashing liquid in a gallon of water and sprayed it liberally and often, it would do the same.

That is on our list for this year’s garden maintenance.

Gardening is also very therapeutic in that you can go at your own speed, letting your mind wander at will, as you slowly weed around the plants. Some people detest the weeding part but personally I find it satisfying to clear the rows and make them look neat. Plus, it gives you something to do while you’re waiting for the tomatoes to ripen and the beans to make.

The end result is worth it once you taste fresh-picked roasting ears. If you are as obsessive about food preservation as I am, your reward will be a freezer and pantry full of fruits and vegetables that can be used during the winter months. So if you are new to the gardening game, get in on the fun, even if it’s just containers of tomatoes and peppers on the back porch. Happy Gardening! Label boxes and furniture by room and label the rooms in the new home. This will avoid the unending question, “Where does this go?” Some movers provide special stickers for this purpose that won’t mar the furniture.

If possible, make arrangements for small children and pets to be with friends or family during the move. But, do include older children in the process as it will help them to feel a part of the new home. Even toddlers can “pack” their own toys.

Take time to back up all computer data and keep it in a safe place until you are certain that all is well.

Take pictures of your most valuable items before the move so that you will have documentation if they are damaged or lost.

The best moving experience starts with a good plan and a budget. Start shopping for movers or a truck at least six weeks in advance to make sure you have a shot at the best prices. If you have a choice, avoid peak times such as the weekends and the end of the month. Be sure your quote includes all the extras – charges for steps, pianos, insurance, and specialty items.

If the distance isn’t far and you can make some trips on your own, consider moving specialty items that the movers charge extra for by yourself. For example, most movers require individual crating for all pictures and art work. Most of

The seller’s role in preparing for a home inspection

Tomorrow is another day in real estate and I will be doing the same thing that I have done time and time again … I will be on location with a buyer and a home inspector. A home inspection is a critical component of the home purchase process and a great tool to determine the condition of a home. When asked who benefits from a home inspection, the typical response might be the buyer. Yes, it is true that the prospective purchaser benefits by receiving reassurance of operable systems or by being alerted to potential problems be it structural, roofing, plumbing, electrical, or mechanical. However, let’s keep in mind that the seller can benefit as well. The home inspection protects the seller because it establishes the actual condition of the property at the time of sale; this representation can keep costly property defect disputes from surfacing after the closing.

Regardless of who benefits, the fact is that a home inspection is

a necessary means to an end. In essence, the vast majority of home buyers will require an inspection as a contingency to the purchase contract.

Hence, the seller must permit the inspection if the ultimate goal is to sell the house. If a seller abides by a few of these helpful preparation tips, the home inspection can be accelerated and go much more smoothly.

• Ensure that water, electric and gas services are connected. With gas systems, the pilot light should also be burning.

• Take action to guarantee that pets will not hinder the inspection.

Ideally, they should be removed from the premises or properly secured away from the inspector.

• Replace burned out bulbs to avoid a “light is inoperable” report that may suggest an electrical problem.

• Replace dead batteries in smoke or carbon monoxide detectors.

Renovated and move-in ready!

• Clean or replace dirty HVAC filters; they should fit securely.

• Remove stored items such as wood and debris from around the foundation. These items may be cited as “conducive conditions” for termites.

• Remove anything that may block access to HVAC equipment, electric service panels, water heaters, attics, and crawl spaces.

• Unlock areas that the inspector must access, attic doors or hatches, closets, gates, and crawl spaces.

• Trim tree limbs and shrubs from the house to allow access to exterior perimeter.

• Attend to broken or missing items such as electrical cover plates, doorknobs, locks, latches, windowpanes, screens, gutters, and downspouts.

• Have the heating and cooling system serviced by a licensed professional.

• Perform a safety check! Have

the chimney professionally cleaned and inspected, and install chimney hoods and caps as needed. Test auto reverse safety feature on garage doors. Check the pressure and temperature relief valve at the hot water heater for proper operation.

Ensure that GFCI electrical outlets are installed in all necessary locations (kitchens, bathrooms, laundry, and outdoor areas) and that they are working properly.

As you attend to these items, remind yourself that the goal is to achieve a sale and that your hard work could have major payoffs!

When David Callahan was a little boy, his mom and dad used to encourage him and his two brothers to go outside and play. Now, fast-forward about 60 years, David is still taking those treks.

David, who is the second vice president and field trip coordinator for both the Gem & Mineral Society of Lynchburg, VA, Inc and the Roanoke Valley Mineral & Gem Society, took a break from rocks for a while, but is now even more interested than ever.

He joined the Lynchburg club in the early 1990s and after his retirement in 1998 he got even more involved. “I had more time when I was working than I do when I’m retired,� he joked.

As field trip coordinator, David is in charge of leading groups – sometimes as large as 100 people – to places where they can see and/or collect interesting specimens of rocks and minerals. Places like the old American Rutile Quarry in Roseland.

Now owned by Stuart and Betsy Smith, the quarry is just part of the backyard now that it’s no longer used for mining titanium. Though it is private

property, David approached this Smiths when they started building there house in the early 2000s.

And he’s so glad he did. “We established a good relationship and they were delighted because they were kind of interested in the rocks and mineralogy of the area, too,� said David.

Every once in a while, the Smiths encounter a rockhound like David at their door. Someone who has heard of the quarry and wants to take a peak.

One man drove down from as far as Illinois. They don’t necessarily want to make a habit of that, but it is neat from time to time. And David’s group? “We’re very happy to have them – I’d love to go down with them sometime,� said Stuart Smith.

But be careful Stuart – David says collecting rocks and minerals can be contagious. “It can lead to other things and you become interested in geology and rocks and minerals. You learn about collecting, making jewelry,� said David.� You take trips, go to museums, make friends from all over that all have a common interest.�

Grass that Never Needs to be Mowed Many years ago I was looking to buy a house in an urban area and the realtor stated that a house she wanted me to take a look at ‘had grass that never needed to be mowed’. When I arrived at the residence I understood exactly what she was talking about – the homeowner had planted a full lawn of dwarf mondo grass (Ophiopogon japonicus ‘Nana’) in an attempt to produce a lawn that, well, never needed to be mowed.

The effect was surprisingly nice and for a small area with light traffic, I would say that it worked. When used appropriately, there are many ways to enjoy this dwarf grass to add elements of low, grass-like effects in random locations around your landscape and effectively provide a 12-month cover in the garden.

Dwarf mondo grass or dwarf ‘monkey grass’ as it is commonly referred, is a sister to liriope that grows in tufts of short, 3-4 inch tall, Âź inch wide blades in either part sun or shade. The plant grows by modified underground stems or rhizomes, as it is known professionally, and slowly can fill a small area in over time.

When cared for properly, this perennial will eventually form a green mass of 3 inch grass-like cover.

The uses of dwarf mondo grass are many – but it must be planted in mass (no less than 25 plants in an area). Dwarf mondo grass is best planted on 3-4 inch centers in order to achieve the best effects as it spreads rather slowly. Half moon masses at the base of a dwarf tree, when mixed with crocus, windflower and other early spring species create an excellent effect. Around stepping stones on a path, dwarf mondo grass can be used to encapsulate each stone to appear as though they were in grass - a unique touch that draws out the intense contrast between stone and plant. Even in that shade garden

where you cannot get grass to grow but need the simplicity of a grass-like medium, dwarf mondo grass will engulf the area over time.

Soil preparation, as always is a must – in particular for this dwarf, shallow rooted perennial. A blend of peat moss, gypsum, organic fertilizer, high-grade topsoil and compost blended together are necessary amendments with any shallow rooted perennial as the roots will stay mostly within the first 3-4 inches in the soil profile and, equally important, droughts or dry spells can spell certain doom if the soil has not been amended in an effort to retain moisture. When planting dwarf mondo grass, it is imperative that you plant the new ‘plugs’ at the same level as they were in their purchased container and no deeper and that the soil have good drainage (again, amend your soil).

Care for dwarf mondo grass can mostly be found in proper weed control and regular fertilizing – mainly spring (April) and summer (July).

An application of an organic fertilizer at label rate is necessary to maintain the deep rich green sheen that is typical of this grass. As true with most perennials, over-mulching will either choke out or suppress dwarf mondo grass so mulch conservatively. A good rule of thumb in mulching this plant is that none is needed as long as the current mulch is visible and has not broken down into a fine, compost-like texture. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, I keep trying to be healthy and I don’t seem to make any progress.

What is the problem?

I have given a lot of thought recently to the word ‘practice.’ I listen to my kids practice the piano and guitar. One son does karate and practices this frequently. It is amazing to watch their progression over time.

When they complain about how hard the activity is, they are encouraged to practice harder and something that initially was very difficult becomes easy and almost second nature. In this case, practice is the repetition of an activity in order to gain mastery.

Practice can also be something that is done out of routine. For instance, it may be your practice to have a cup of coffee each morning, or go for a morning run. Or you may observe certain traditions, such as to practice a religion. The word practice can be used in many different ways.

Many of us take our health for granted. We expect to have good health and are frustrated when we are not healthy. But like most things in life we must ‘practice’ good health.

We must work to gain mastery of our health. This means working hard to improve our health. We need to practice our healthy habits such as exercise, healthy food choices, not smoking, etc. When it gets difficult and we do not see results we need to practice harder, not give up. Just like trying to play a difficult new chord on a guitar, we need to practice getting better in our health.

Good health also needs to become our routine, just like the morning cup of coffee. It should be our practice to eat healthy foods and exercise regularly. And good health should be a tradition. Just like we may celebrate Easter or any other holiday, we should practice and celebrate our good health every day. Good health comes from a consistent healthy lifestyle over years. Remember that practice makes perfect.

The Power of the Lunge The exercise called “the lunge” when done with proper technique can strengthen your ankle, knee, hip and core muscles. It can be a static or dynamic exercise. It builds power in the legs and has several variations. To perform it, take a standing position with your feet about 4-6 inches apart.

The toes are facing forward. Take a large step forward with your right leg and lower the body so the right knee has a 90 degree bend. The left knee should also bend and the left heel can come off of the floor. Do not allow the right knee to go past the toes of the right foot which can be harmful for the knee. The front knee (the right in this case) may want to deviate in or out; try to keep it in alignment.

While in this position, contract your core muscles, tuck the tail bone underneath you and also contract the pelvic floor muscles. Then, return to the starting position and try it with the left leg.

The variations are many depending on your training goals. It can be performed fast or slowly. If done

slowly, assume the lunge position and see how long you can hold the position. This helps with balance and hip stability. You can perform it while holding weights in your hands to add upper body strength work.

You can perform a backward lunge by stepping backward and keeping the same form. It can be performed by stepping the front leg on to a step or BOSU, still trying to keep the front knee at a 90 degrees angle and the shin bone perpendicular to the floor. The number of repetitions can vary; for example, if you are striving for balance and stability, try longer holds but fewer repetitions. If you are working on endurance and power, higher repetitions with a powerful step forward and back, trying to complete as many repetitions as you can with proper technique. If you have balance issues, begin the exercise while holding onto your kitchen counter until your balance improves.

It is a fun exercise and can benefit the athletes to the sedentary. Begin slowly and as always, don’t overdo it!

Malcolm Drumheller’s book of poems and short stories draws on his memories growing up with his brothers – one of whom is his twin – in Schuyler.

As the title of the book implies, Malcolm Drumheller is a twin (bottom, far right). Though he grew up in Schuyler, he now lives in Lovingston with his wife, Phyllis (bottom).

Malcolm Drumheller wrote his first poem, “Why So Late,” sometime in the late 1950s with the encouragement of his English teacher, Francis Baker.

“She really turned me on to poetry and literature and from then on, I just had the urge to create something in words,” said Malcolm, who was born in Schuyler and has lived in Nelson County all his life.

He’s currently in Lovinsgton.

And now, he’s finally created something concrete from all those words he wrote.

“I guess, in a sense, I’ve always been an author,” said the man who worked in the Nelson County School System for 41 years. “I have written things for years, I just never did anything with them. I would just put them in a stack somewhere.”

But last November as he was looking up different kinds of poetry on the internet, he found a company that helped authors and poets publish their work.

Now, just six months later, his completed book is on sale at Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble Booksellers.

Malcolm, who writes poetry and prose, gets all of his inspiration from the memories of the time he spent with his brothers growing up and playing outdoors in the beauty of Nelson. He is the younger

of twin boys (hence “Gemini” in the title poem) and they had another younger brother as well.

“There is such a wide variety of things that I wrote about,” he said. Adding that some of his stories and poems are based on actual happenings, but there are a lot that aren’t, too. “I get a thought and I write it down and develop it a little bit. I write about death. About life. About decision making. And some just plain fun stuff.”

So far his book has gotten some pretty favorable reviews. One Amazon.com reviewer gave the book five stars and said “this author does a wonderful job of painting the picture of growing up, living, and raising a family in a rural area. Everyone can find something they can relate to in this book.”

And while Malcolm definitely isn’t hating the praise, for him, this book was about a lifelong dream to create art from words.

“I read a quote once from Robert Frost and he said that being a poet is not a profession – it’s a condition. And he is very much right. It’s sort of like you’re filled up with something and you need to get it out and you don’t even know why sometimes. I never set out to be a poet,” said Malcolm.

The reason for having all of those windows in your home is to enjoy your beautiful views and the natural light in your home. It’s a shame to have them covered up with blinds or curtains. You have to run around lifting them up and down different times of the day to block the sun. That daily chore has probably become too much of a hassle and you just leave your blinds down all day. Think about that for one minute and ask yourself this. “Why do I have windows in my home and why did I move to Nelson County?” The views, right? So why are you eliminating your views with blinds? sandy vs. stink bugs It all began last summer.....our little log home began to host a party for these funny, not-so-small bugs that smelled TERRIBLE when squashed, as we so often did to them in the early days. They’d rush our screen doors in their eager attempt to reside with my family inside the house. I remember thinking in September that there were so many of these darn things and I had never seen them before.. everyone called them Stink Bugs... very appropo.........I was embarrassed to invite people over for lunch for fear they’d be totally turned off by these flying little torpedoes.

The first pair of slacks I pulled out casually dropped 2 or 3 bugs on the floor. Whoa, I thought, I’d better check all my clothes up here.

Every thing I owned in the back of the closet dropped 2, 5, 10, maybe 20 bugs as I shook things out. I thought they were all dead at first until I saw them start scurrying away. I yelled to Bill to come up with the vacuum cleaner as this was way bigger than I could handle.

“Hurry!” I bellowed, “They’re all running away into other places!”

Bill will tell you, when I holler I HOLLER! In a panic I decided I’d better pull everything out, and with that, as he’s furiously vacuuming the bugs, I pulled out a large suitcase way in the back of the closet.

The floor underneath the case was COVERED WITH BUGS, hundreds of them. I nearly fainted.

The young exterminator arrived the next day to tell us that he, his father, and his grandfather, had all come up with the solution to kill stink bugs. He would spray our windows, inside and out, our indoor plants, and the floors. He said they were coming in to get out of the cold weather. Great, I didn’t think our house was big enough to accommodate such a hoard of guests for the winter. We had to vacate the house, animals included, for 6 hours after he sprayed his chemicals. We came home later to horror! There were thousands of belly-up stink bugs everywhere.

Wow! Success! Ha ... It took us 6 hours the next day to clean up the debris of bugs, but they weren’t all dead. Just stunned.

It is now March and we still have many unwelcome guests.

I’ve made peace with them, how-

Well, that was the beginning.

For the next few weeks we continued to find the bugs here and there. In book cases, window sills, and open shelves. We flushed them down the toilet, we sunk them in old jars of water laced with dishwashing soap, we swore at them, and so did the dogs....and still they came, buzzing our heads in the evenings as they attempted to lodge in our ceiling fan lights. Talk about disconcerting.

Bill and I both decided we couldn’t take it anymore, we had had enough of the little terrorists ...and so, on the first of the new year, we called a local exterminator. I had already discussed the problem with our County Extension Agent who stated that no pesticides were effective. We had also read several articles that said the same thing... but we were desperate. We needed to start the new year in a “stink-bug-free” home.

(BTW, we only flush when the toilet bowl water is opaque with bugs, we try to observe water conservation) We continue to find approximately 50 to 75 every day as we make our daily rounds. They’re mostly on window sills, floors, and on shelves. And they’re just playing dead, the frisky little buggers. Their little legs just go awigglin’ when we pick them up and, in our observation, not all of them smell. Must only be the boys!

We’re about to go into warm weather and have lots of worries as to this next season of invasion. To our dogs and cats, the screen doors will NOT be an open door for you this year!
