thejr.publisher So mom’s gotten this wild idea in her head that getting a group of people together to compete in something called the Tough Mudder at Wintergreen Resort this fall is a good idea. When kids like me do it, we call it a play date.

Mom is lucky to have us as her children because we know a lot about mud. The best mud is the kind that you accidentally step on. It squishes around your shoes and forms a suction. When you finally do free your foot from the mud, you can track it inside the house. See my foot prints?

Peyton’s a little young to be playing in the mud but as her big brother, I can help her get ready.

It’s no big deal, really. When I got it all over my pants and mom buckled me into the car seat not realizing I had gotten dirty, the mud dried out nicely. And then the next morning when I got back in the seat, I scraped off a little of the dried mud and sucked on it like chew. Peyton has seen me do it.

There’s a part of the Tough Mudder obstacle course that requires you to scale a wall and jump over it. I do that all the time with the couches in the den. Once mom overcomes her

fear of climbing, jumping and dirty sofas, she’ll be just fine.

Mom says she may be so muddy at the end of the race, she might just have to throw her shoes away.

If I threw my shoes away, I’d get in trouble. I threw my ABC bus out the car window last year. No one got hurt but mommy didn’t like it. Not one bit.

That being said, I know she’s a Tough Mother but with my help and guidance, I can help her be a Tough Mudder.

Grape Varieties, Part II Before I jump to our juicy topic, I’ll advise that the Surgeon General has issued a warning that reading this article may be hazardous to your sensibilities.

End of disclaimer‌but beginning of digression: In Europe there are no Surgeon General warning labels aback bottles of wine. Pregnant and nursing women do not need to be told what and what not to drink because they know.

And don’t you think that most people also know not to rush off to operate the forklift or backhoe while intoxicated?

Last month I introduced varietals and I continue this month with some hybrids and crosses‌it’s spring after all and cross pollination is in the air.

Cross pollination occurs when grapes get perturbed with their partners (this is called “Grapes of Wrath�) and decide to experiment with other varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon thus spawns Cabernet Saubinthere, as in “so been there,� and usually applied to last grape-mate. You see this grape consumed at sorority and fraternity parties. It’s cheap, high in alcohol and often leaves the imbibees stating “Oh my god, like, I have so been there,� (hence the homonymic

name) as they watch their friends succumb to porcelain artifacts. Occasionally this varietal will mutate into Cabernet Saupenthere as in “Careful, there’s soap in there,� which I’d think would be preferable, but never mind.

Grape varietals also often aspire to be more than their stature on the vine (these are called “Grape Expectations�), then sometimes there is just no rhyme or raison to what they do.

There is, however, conclusive evidence that wine in moderation benefits health. Some varietals ward off mental illness. There’s Moscophilero from Greece which sounds more like a fancy insect’s larvae or an insidious disease than it does a grape variety. But nevertheless it’s said to help ameliorate Alzheimer’s disease. Maybe because in Greece wine is drunk all day beginning with breakfast, and by the end of the day it’s somewhat difficult to tell who’s mentally unstable and who’s just

I love the natural light and views in my home but I don’t like blinds, & everything is Fading and it is Hot!

What Can I do?

What a great question! Before I answer it, please let me introduce myself. My name is Darin Martin, and I am a lifelong resident of Central Virginia, and a local business owner. Having said that , I truly understand why people move to Nelson County, and never leave. It is a place that is rich in history, culturally diverse, relatively small, and of course the natural beauty. And now, with spring coming, the natural beauty of the Blue Ridge area comes to life in the mountains and valleys.

Most people I know, including myself want to enjoy our natural surroundings as much as possible. We hike, bike, take walks, Sunday drives, and play golf. Another trend I have noticed over the years is that we want to enjoy all of those splendors even when we don’t have time to be active or just want to relax. One way this has been accomplished is by adding more, and larger windows to our homes. The upsides to doing this are obvious. We receive much more natural light, and of course those views!

Unfortunately, everything has a downside. We didn’t consider how much heat enters our home through the glass. Then there’s that awful fading. Who knew that the sun destroyed everything so fast. Now are floors, furniture, carpet, and artwork are a different color.

This brings us back to the original question. What can I do? Since blinds and curtains only work when they are closed, they block our wonderful winter views, and they eliminate our natural light. They also are difficult to clean, have to be replaced or repaired periodically, and don’t work well on reducing the heat that passes through our windows.

When life gave Tom lemons, he got

After 16 years of working for The Washington Post, the newspaper pulled out of the area and Tom lost his management job. The Post gave him a pretty nice severance so he did some traveling (went to Italy with his wife, saw Ecuador on his own), but when that was all done, he was a little bored.

The caption writer is trying really really hard not to make a snarky April Fools’ issue comment about the abundant Masonic symbolism in this photo spread. Just look at the back of the dollar bill. I think all we’re missing here is the Illuminati’s Eye of Providence, conveniently hidden under Tom’s sunglasses!

“Last spring I got home and I built this egg,” said Tom, who is now working again at the Daily Progress.

But it’s no ordinary egg. It’s made of soapstone from the Alberene Soapstone Quarry in Schuyler. And it’s big. And it’s heavy.

“I was kind of inspired in Ecuador,” said Tom. “It’s an egg shape and about 4 feet high and 3 feet wide.”

After retiling his own house in Afton and building a stone wall between his property and the road he started to get some compliments about his stonework so he decided to take a trip down to the quarry to see what he could find. There were many 1½-inch pieces of light blue soapstone perfect for his egg-shaped vision.

After taking all of the eggs out of his refrigerator to find the perfect shape, he meticulously graphed out his plan, staked out a spot on the yard for his stone, his wet saw and his makeshift workshop table.

And then he built. For about six hours a day, four days a week, for three weeks.

“It was like a full time job!” said Tom. “But then, of course, I had stone left over.”

So after the heat of the summer died down, he started on his next project – a pyramid. He did eventually need more stone from the quarry to complete the 4-foot tall sculpture that has a 4-foot by 4-foot base.

“This one I cut with a wet saw and cut it smooth,” Tom explained. “The egg is round so I chipped it and hammered it so it’s got more texture, but the pyramid has a smooth angle.”

For some artistic touches, Tom added a band of pink marble leftover from another project (tiling his home), and made an interchangeable tip.

“One is a traditional tip and the other has wings. My wife is into more historic art,” he said. And the wings are kind of mythological.

“And then if you leave the point off, it comes to what you see on the dollar bill.”

The tips of the pyramid are interchangeable, but all the other stone isn’t going anywhere. It’s all cement-

ed together with Portland cement, which creates a super hard bond.

Tom didn’t want any chance of these pieces breaking or cracking.

Tom’s new to this kind of sculpture work. And, in fact, he’s not always sure he can call them sculptures (though his wife insists they are). But he’s not new to stone work by any means.

“I tell you, I’ve enjoyed doing stone masonry my whole life,” he said. “I used to be a stone mason when I was a young man and ever since then I’ve enjoyed doing projects.”

So even though he’s got a full-time job again now, he’s not ready to stop sculpting. And what’s next up on the docket for Tom? “I’ve thought of making miniatures and that way they can be portable,” he said, adding that he’s not sure how much the egg and the pyramid weigh, but they’re too heavy to move. But perhaps maybe he’s got another big ‘un on the way, too.

“I thought I’d build a third one, a globe.”

According to Fred Abbey and the Central Blue Ridge Virginia Master Naturalists, Earth Day (April 22) is not a day for commiserating with fellow earth lovers.

“It’s not a doom and gloom day,” said Fred, a new member of the organization. “It’s a day to say ‘Let’s look at the natural assets that we have and celebrate the people who nurture them.’”

That’s why the Master Naturalists have decided to host their first ever Earth Day Celebration. This year, they’ll celebrate April 23 at Wintergreen Resort, but they hope to continue in future years at

The three sessions are “Our Trees” by John Lorber of the Nature Conservancy, “Vernal Ponds” by Mike Hayslet of Sweet Briar College, and “George Washington National Forest and Wintergreen Resort” by David Hannah of Wild Virginia.

When Tommy asked if I would consider writing a tribute for the Nelson County Life’s sixth anniversary issue, I was honored to oblige but it struck me that the older I get, the faster time seems to fly. It’s hard to fathom it’s been six years since the first copy of the paper hit the newsstands around Nelson.

I remember picking up that first issue at the Nellysford IGA and thinking what a great little

paper it was; a perfect blend of current happenings and oldtime activities from around the county. It brought back a flood of memories surrounding the humble beginning of my own newspaper, Backroads, which I published for twenty-five years from my home here in Love. No doubt Tommy and Yvette had the same combination of excitement and apprehension at the start of their new venture that I had. I

distinctly remember the daily fluctuation of emotions, ranging from the headiness of seeing my name on a by-line to the persistent thought, “What was I thinking?

How will I DO this?�

But I also remember how the community supported me. Words of encouragement when I did a good job and sweet forgiveness when I messed up spurred me on and made me want to give my best to showcase the people I interviewed and came in contact with.

The folks in Nelson never disappointed and I knew from the April 2005 issue of Nelson County Life, Tommy and Yvette would also come to know the unconditional love and acceptance that country people possess. You can’t fool the locals... they know whose hearts are genuine and the ones who really care.

We’ve watched the Staffords move into our area, settle down and become one of us. Their newspaper reflects not only what’s going on in other people’s lives but also their own. They’ve included us readers in their search for a home, the trials of starting a new business, and their very personal journey into parenthood, as

both Adam and now little Peyton arrived on their watch. My own daughter was eleven when the Backroads began and there were days I never thought I’d juggle everything at home, much less run a whole newspaper. Folks, it’s a huge responsibility and how Tommy and Yvette manage to crank out Nelson County Life each month, amid naps, feedings and doctor appointments is by God’s grace and their own persistence.

I can only attribute this persistence in the fact that they have a heart for it. A heart for not only their work but also the people of Nelson County. From my own experience, somewhere along the way, the folks you talk to become more than just a story for the newspaper...they become cherished friends of immeasurable value. The ones that bring a smile to your face long after their gone.

Tommy and Yvette, with all this said, may the sixth anniversary of Nelson County Life be your best one yet and I’d like to personally wish you many, many more years of capturing all the hometown news for everyone’s enjoyment, but especially your own! NCL

Tax Deductions for Your Small Business Let’s say it like it is…small business owners absolutely hate tax time. Preparing your tax return takes time and money away from your money making operations. But, it’s April and it’s time to face the music. Let’s look at a few things that might ease the pain.

If you are a sole proprietor filing a Schedule C or owner of a partnership or Limited Liability Company, you are taxed on the net income of the business after allowable deductions. In addition, you pay self-employment tax on the net income. Deductions are the key to reducing your taxable income.

Home Office – If you use a portion of your home for your business, you may qualify for a home office deduction. Use Form 8829 to summarize your rent or mortgage costs, utilities, repairs, and maintenance. Multiply the total by the percentage of the square footage used for the business.

Vehicle Expenses – Unless your business owns the vehicles, the best method of claiming a deduction for your business travel is the IRS mileage allowance. For 2010, you may

deduct 50 cents per mile plus parking fees, tolls, interest, and taxes related to the business use. In addition to mileage to job sites, don’t forget to include other trips such as purchasing and banking. Use your calendar to keep track of the miles.

New Equipment and Furnishings – These generally must be treated as an asset and depreciated over 5 to 7 years. However, the current rules permit you to deduct all of the expense in the current year in most situations.

Staying Connected – The cost of a second telephone line in your home, cell phone costs and internet connections can all be deducted if used for your small business.

Contract Labor – Payments to others are deductible – but you must file Forms 1099 with the IRS and provide a copy to the contractors.

Penalties for not filing have become very steep. Make sure you have the required information to file by having each contractor complete Form W-9 - before you pay them!

Business Meals – This is a hot item

on IRS audits – but that’s not a reason to avoid valid deductions for business meals. Document your expense and the business reason. The actual deduction is limited to 50 percent.

Working Meals and Employee Recreation – Categorize these separately from your business meals because they are fully deductible.

Examples include pizza for a work session, summer picnics, or annual holiday parties.

Business Losses – So, it’s been a tough year and you have a loss. In the tax world, that’s called a Net Operating Loss (“NOL”). Talk to your Tax Preparer about how this can be carried back to profitable years. You could benefit from a nice refund.

Document! – The key to making next year’s taxes less painful is to set up a system that works for you. Inexpensive software solutions include QuickBooks or Quicken, but you can also just set up a spreadsheet to categorize your deductions.

And, don’t forget that your Tax Preparer is the best resource for tax guidance!

Fluffing, Primping and Staging Your Home

Spring typically brings April showers, May flowers, and more buyers. This is a great forecast, except that there are also many more sellers.

Prior to the housing market crisis, the spring brought about 180 homes for sale. In today’s market, there are currently 351 homes available in Nelson County. With so many choices, it is more important than ever for sellers to get to primping, fluffing, and staging. A well priced and well staged home can “set the stage” for a sale this spring. Here are a few staging tricks of the trade.

Prepare for staging. Before staging, a house must first be cleaned, painted, and repaired as needed. It must also be de-cluttered. Remove books from shelves, pack the knickknacks, and clear the countertops.

Depersonalize! Pack away anything that makes the house “yours” instead of “theirs”. Take down fam-

ily photos and put away the family heirlooms and collectibles.

Strip to the bare essentials. Pack away your shabby recliner and get rid of “I will use it one day” furnishings and gadgets. You want just enough furniture to define a room’s purpose without over-crowding.

Create positive focal points. Take the eye off of the chipped paint, old nail holes, or peeling wallpaper. Fix those problem areas if possible and entice the eye to a new focal point.

Pull furniture away from walls and arrange in appealing groupings allowing plenty of pass-thru space. Don’t block the rooms “wow factor” like a fireplace or a gorgeous window view.

Highlight the key rooms. Kitchens and bathrooms most influence a buyer’s decision. Make the kitchen appear larger by reducing clutter, clearing countertops, and removing unused pots and pans in the cabinets.

and then add the “Wow” with flowers, fruit bowls, and new kitchen towels. Remove clutter and stage a bath with decorative towels, soaps, candles, spa baskets, flowers, and floral pictures to set the ambiance of the room.

Don’t forget the outside. Outdoor living space is becoming more and more appealing to buyers. Treat your deck or patio like another room in the house. Cover the worn picnic table with a bright tablecloth, replace the faded chair cushions, and arrange greenery and flowers.

Spruce up the appeal. Room by room, set the mood. Dress rooms with mirrors, plants, flowers, lamps, throw rugs, pillows, baskets and soft fabrics such as silk, lamb’s wool, or satin.

Arrange fresh flowers. Fresh flowers are little luxuries that make people feel good. Consider having flowers outside to line the entry walk,

or indoors on a foyer stand, dining room table, bathroom counter, or bedroom dresser.

Strive for cheerful and bright.

Turn on lights and lamps and open blinds and curtains to let the sunshine pour in. Consider removing all window coverings to bring the outside indoors.

Appeal to all the senses. Make sure your house smells fresh, clean, and inviting. Just prior to a showing, toss a clean sheet and fabric softener into the dryer or boil water with orange peels and cinnamon.

Buyers have a multitude of options. If you want your home to steal the show, you had better get to work!

Floating Row Covers Contrary to what many people think organic pesticides have not necessarily been proven to be safer than synthetic pesticides. The reason is simple; organic compounds have to be sprayed more frequently than their synthetic counterparts and therefore leave a heavier residue once they are on the table and ready for consumption.

Although the label appears benign, the frequency in applications is the ‘sticky’ part of the equation that has many researchers changing their minds on the safety of these products. However, there are many organic gardening methods that are still the way to go and trying to achieve a ‘spray free’ or ‘limited organic spray’ vegetable garden should be your goal if you can pull it off. Floating row covers are one great option to achieve such a garden.

The concept is to create a safe zone, impenetrable to insects, completely around the plant and therefore allowing the plant to grow pest-free – in particular while it is in it’s most vulnerable state, the new transplant. This is accomplished by either draping the row cover over the plants or, for a more finished look, first bending galvanized steel (1/8 to 1/16 inch) into wickets or half circles and pressing them firmly into the earth over top the area where your garden is planted. On top of these wickets is stretched a tightly woven, polypropylene fabric (row cover) and is attached to the sides with either 1 inch by 1 inch strips nailed to the side (if in raised beds) or soil that is pulled over the edges. Whatever way you use to secure it, make sure that the fabric is taut to prevent windy days from blowing the cover away. Clothespins offer excellent help to secure the fabric to the top and sides of the hoops. The fabric itself can be purchased in different weights so that you can also rely on it for added frost prevention to the crop. For insect prevention only, I recommend the lightest fabric avail-

able, typically called ‘Summerweight’, which allows as much as 85% transmission of light into the canopy of the plant. Remember, even with this fabric in place, it is imperative that you continue to check your crops frequently for overheating (even though they allow a considerable amount of air flow into and out of the area).

Now with all 4 corners attached, insects are prevented from damaging your plants. This includes the gardens most wanted list: aphids, potato beetles, Japanese beetles, grasshoppers, cabbage worms, leaf miners, root maggots and some vine borers.

However, there is a catch. Plants that require bees for pollination, i.e. peas, squash, strawberries, etc. will need to be uncovered once they set blooms; plants that do not flower and therefore do not require pollination, i.e. lettuce, potatoes, rape, etc. do not need to be uncovered except for harvesting, weeding and watering (the fabric is not water repellent and rain should penetrate some). Although the ‘Summerweight’ fabric is the lightest available, it still does offer some protection from frost, aids in wind protection and prevents the soil and plants from overheating.

Once the season is done, remove and fold your fabric and store it in an attic or other storage area where it is out of the sun, free from moisture and protected from mice and other nuisance rodents. The fabric is relatively tough, lasting multiple seasons, and very inexpensive for the value that it provides. Once the fabric has some holes and therefore deemed unusable on the garden, use it for weed prevention under trees and shrubs, for moisture and erosion prevention in newly seeded lawn areas and to cover both annuals at the end of the season during the first light frosts that occur in the fall. The hoops should also be taken down and stored in a garage or other structure for the off-season.

By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Diabetes Part 1 “Gimme some sugar” is what my daughter’s aunt says to her when she wants a kiss. “I don’t want the sugar” is what I hear in my office all too often from people who have high blood sugars. They are not concerned about kisses, but about the very real and increasingly prevalent disease of diabetes.

I am seeing this so much lately that I thought I would write this and my next few columns about “The Sugar.”

Diabetes is a disease where the body does not handle sugar appropriately. Since almost all of the food we eat gets turned into sugar, that can be a big problem. Type 1 diabetes usually happens in children, and is caused by the pancreas not making insulin which is the hormone that tells our body to store sugar. I am going to discuss type 2 diabetes, which is when either the pancreas does not make enough insulin, or the body does not listen to the pancreas when it sends the insulin out. We are seeing more and more type 2 diabetes now than ever before.

It happens in adults most commonly, but can happen to children in the right (or wrong as the case may be) circum-

stances also.

The dangers of elevated blood sugars are many. High sugar damages our blood vessels, and in so doing hurts whatever they are supposed to supply with blood. Therefore diabetes leads to vision loss, kidney disease, nerve damage, and slow healing from wounds. But, the most scary thing is it also causes heart attacks and strokes—real killers.

You may be at risk for developing diabetes for several reasons, but if you have a family history of the disease, are overweight, or smoke, you are at increased risk. If you are obese and sugar runs in your family, brace yourself because diabetes is probably coming. The good news is that you can do some things to stave off the disease (spoiler alert: exercise and lose weight!), but that is the topic of my next column in 2 months.

Self Destructive Ways “The body has become the whipping post. If the person is anxious, the body is starved, gorged, drugged, intoxicated, forced to vomit, driven to exhaustion, or driven to frenzied reaction against self-destruction.”

These words by Marion Woodman likely strike a chord with each of us at some point in our lives.

“You are what you eat.” It is the truth; if we only put junk food in our system, our bodies will run poorly and we will feel awful. Oh, you’ll do OK for a while, then things will start to break down in the form of muscular pain, diabetes, heart condition and arthritis. Clients often ask me, “How did I get this pain?” If it is an ailment with a gradual onset, my reply is usually, “Your body couldn’t take the stress anymore.” It was screaming to be heard; wanting some attention. It is the straw that broke the camel’s back scenario. Sometimes, we take better care of our pets and vehicles than ourselves. Our car gets a regular oil change, tune up and the

proper fuel so that it runs smoothly and lasts longer- so we get the best value for what we paid for it. Imagine that for yourself.

It would look something like this: getting the proper amount of rest each night, eating balanced and nutritious meals and exercising regularly. In addition, recognizing the stressors in your life and developing coping methods (meditation, yoga) for them. It also means taking time to relax and making time to be with friends and family. Our society rewards us for being productive always pushing to work longer and harder. That drive has cost us our health; both physically and emotionally. It is an insane treadmill that it is difficult to stop but important to realize for a healthy you. Down time, rest and relaxation are needed for physical, mental and emotional health. It allows the body a chance to recharge.

Brian Mininger used to carry around 3 or 4 Bibles. He’d always leave them in places or have notes in one when carrying another. It got to be a hassle.

So now Brian, the pastor at Riverbank Church in Lovingston, carries his Android phone.

“I use a Bible app,” he said. “I can use it on my computer or I can use it on my phone. I really like it; my phone is clipped to my belt so I can’t lay it down and leave it like I do with everything else I carry.”

He doesn’t preach from his phone, but he does use PowerPoint and put all his sermons up on YouTube. Plus, the church has a blog and a Facebook page.

And while Brian loves his technology, that’s definitely not what it’s about for him. The perks of the technology the people he communicates with using it.

“We really believe that there are a lot of people out there that either have never been a part of a church or have not been part of a church for a long time because the church wasn’t relevant for them and for their lives,” said Brian. “I wear my boots and my blue jeans to preach and I use an Android phone app for my bible. We’re normal people and we want to be a church that relates to where people are at.”

Riverbank is a part of the Cornerstone Church Ministries International (CCMI), as is its parent

church, Cornerstone Church in Augusta County. So many Nelson residents were traveling to Augusta, though, that they decided to branch out.

They’ve been meeting since this summer, but their major goal for 2011 was to find a more permanent facility. And seek and ye shall find!

Riverbank Church has moved in to the old Lovingston Opry, which was built in 1832 and used for about 150 years as a Methodist church, and then for a few more as a Catholic church.

It’s been a busy few months for Brian and Riverbank, but what’s most exciting to the little congregation is the speed at which they’re growing.

“By the end of the year, we’d like to see our numbers about double what they are now,” said Brian.

“So our goal for these next few months is to really see the power of God and the love of Jesus just break through people’s lives and make a difference, just like he’s made a difference in our lives.” NCL

Last October, Marina Childs of Afton skipped classes for an entire week. The Virginia Tech senior wasn’t playing hookie, though. And she didn’t spend the week on the beach somewhere improving her tan. But she did get pretty hot.

Marina spent 12 to 14 hours each day that week out in woods in Montgomery County fighting fires.

Yes. Fighting fires.

Marina is the only female firefighter on the Pulaski County Wildland Fire Crew, and has been since this fall after she spent the summer learning about what it takes to fight wildfires and manage prescribed burns, getting all her testing and accreditation out of the way.

“It was fun, I loved it,” said the wildlife major who graduates this May. “It’s hard work, but I got a little taste for it and now I love and I wanna do it all the time.”

And, as of mid-March, Marina already has taken a job in Montana on a fire engine crew to make that dream a reality. Out west, the fires are bigger and the season is longer, lasting from May through October or November. Then, her ideal would be to come back to Virginia to work with the Pulaski County crew during our own fire season, which comes in two parts (October through November and mid-February through May).

“It’s exciting for me. It’s a very physically demanding job,” said Marina, who exercises a lot to prepare for what she’ll need to be able to do to keep up with her primarily male counterparts. “It’s not going to be an easy job, but from being on the fires here, I think it’ll be really excited.

Firefighters fitness challenge which consists of a 1.5 mile run in less than 11 minutes, 30 sit-ups in one minute, 20 push ups in one minute, and 7 pull ups in one minute. The tests are done back to back with no break between. The fitness challenge is done the first week of reporting to work, and every month after that while on duty for the season. In addition to the challenge, firefighters also work out daily.

Marina said she’s a little nervous to go out west and have a “real job,” but she’s also looking forward to it very much. Her parents kind of feel the same way.

“I think it makes my mom a little nervous,” Marina admitted. “Not only is she sending her baby thousands of miles away, I think it’s kind of hard for [my parents] to understand what we’re doing – it’s kind of hard to visualize unless you’ve been there.”

Marina explains to them – and others – that the more you know about the job, the less dangerous it is. She hopes to work in wildfire fighting for a few years (and then maybe eventually become a Hot Shot – someone who fights the hottest parts of the fires) before looking back toward a more traditional job with fish and wildlife services.

“Firefighting … you can’t just decide one day that you want to do this,” she said, explaining that most professionals are only in the heat for 5 to 10 years. “The people that are doing this full-time, that’s all they do. They live and breathe and eat fire. It’s a year-round job even though there aren’t fires every day. It’s definitely something you have to prepare for.” NCL

At the time, she felt it was important to participate because everyone is touched in some way by cancer; Sherri herself had lost a brotherin-law to the disease in 1991.

“We participated because I’ve always either donated to cancer charities or participated in some way,” she said “Even if you don’t have cancer, in some way cancer touches everybody.”

That was two years ago. Sherri plans to make a comeback to the Relay this year. But last year, she didn’t make it.

“I was diagnosed in May of last year,” said Sherri, who before being diagnosed with stage four colon cancer that had metastasized elsewhere in her body had never before been admitted to the hospital, had an MRI or even been to the emergency room. “We didn’t [do the Relay] last year; things were a little crazy.”

Sherri has been blessed, and she says she owes a lot to her family and her community. She has her last chemo session scheduled for April 6 of this year and hopes to make it to the Relay for Life

– she wouldn’t want to miss the survivor’s lap!

“It definitely makes it more personal,” said Sherri, who can’t stress enough the importance of the Relay for Life. “It is truly important because they’re saving lives.”

through the Tye River Elementary PTO. She’d been to the Relay in Amherst and wanted to bring the event to Nelson County in support of her mother- and father-in-law who are both 10year survivors.

During the fundraising for the first Relay, her grandfather was diagnosed with lung cancer. He didn’t know much about Relay, but made sure to make it to the event when he learned about it.

“It was a good experience for him to get out and I guess tell his story because he was just starting out with it,” said Jennifer. “The Relay started out as an ambition of supporters finding a cure, but now it’s become very personal.”

Jennifer’s grandfather, Preston Tyree, passed away January 25th of this year.

“My grandfather passed at 85 years old. My husband’s best friend passed at 51. It doesn’t matter what age, what gender, what race. It’s everywhere,” said Jennifer. “And I never want my kids to hear the words ‘You’ve got cancer.’ It’s become a passion of mine to find a cure because I don’t’ want it to get any closer; I don’t want it to take any more lives.” NCL
