from thepublishers The big question here these days is what to do about the brush pile.

Burning it is a no-brainer unless you have a toddler who’s annexed it into his play ground. We hesitate to start what would look like a war of parental aggression: “Mommy and daddy torched my jungle gym!”

All of this fall’s oak and maple leaves were gathered and thrown on top of a bunch of limbs that had snapped off our silver maples during a wind storm. The resulting heap is a mound of padded-down leaves with a giant, flexible limb poking out of it.

Poor Man’s Horse.

Every day, either before or after his nap, Adam runs down the hill with his arms flailing and dives into the leaves. He then mounts Poor Man’s Horse and rides it bare back.

After a few bounces, it turns into a surf board as he balances on the swaying limb. Finally, the surf board turns into an Olympic diving platform and Adam jumps off. He does this over and over again and it wears him out. Better him than us.

If we burn the gym, it’s not like there won’t be other brush piles with bendy limbs sticking out of them. But I do remember having the perfect tree

branch one year. Reaching out over a hill, this limb branched out into a perfect “Y” – handle bars! I’d grab onto it, swing forward, and fly into the air. I came home sweaty, happy, with a fresh poison oak rash.

And then one day, I went to my tree to find that someone had discovered my secret. The handle bars had been snapped off, presumably by a bigger kid. A bigger kid called a worried parent is my guess.

We may just have to let Peyton decide.

Love Potions Remember love potion number nine? I think it was really no more than wine, for that lovely liquid is mythic in its power to unite. Beginning with Greek amphorae of pale red potions shared between lovers, wine has, over the centuries, been associated with love and romance. We have only to look back to the troubadours in medieval France who wooed their ladies with flasks of exotic wine (or was it that they were swilling exotic wine whilst wooing?) One doesn’t have to search far to find references to wine and love throughout the ages. Constant wine drinking was one of the main preoccupations of mythical lovers whenever they were together so much so that love and wine became inextricably linked.

One of the world’s great love stories, Vis & Ramin, written in rhyming couplets in the mid eleventh-century and likely the source of Tristan and Isolde, exemplifies better than even Troubadourian poetry the age-old yet sublime connection between Eros and wine. In Middle Eastern cultures because wine was forbidden by the Prophet, praise of wine became symbolic of the divine

intoxication of love. This Valentine’s Day, woo the lovely lady or laddie of your dreams with wine.

St-Amour – ‘Saint of Love’, the name alone is poetical enough to want to buy a bottle, but contrary to what we romantics like to think and wish, StAmour was not named after the saint of love, but rather derived from Saint Amateur, a Roman soldier who converted to Christianity. Yet St-Amour is still as beautiful as its name suggests.

True for me, for no other wine in the world capture my heart quite like a sensuous Chambolle-Musigny or Bonnes Mares. What a great question! Before I answer it, please let me introduce myself. My name is Darin Martin, and I am a lifelong resident of Central Virginia, and a local business owner. Having said that , I truly understand why people move to Nelson County, and never leave. It is a place that is rich in history, culturally diverse, relatively small, and of course the natural beauty. Ah yes, the majestic views of the Blue Ridge and the sparkle of freshly fallen snow in the valleys.

Most people I know, including myself want to enjoy our natural surroundings as much as possible. We hike, bike, take walks, Sunday drives, and ski. Another trend I have noticed over the years is that we want to enjoy all of those splendors even when we don’t have time to be active or just want to relax. One way this has been accomplished is by adding more, and larger windows to our homes. The upsides to doing this are obvious. We receive much more natural light, and of course those views!

Unfortunately, everything has a downside. We didn’t consider how much heat enters our home through the glass. Then there’s that awful fading. Who knew that the sun destroyed everything so fast. Now are floors, furniture, carpet, and artwork are a different color.

This brings us back to the original question. What can I do? Since blinds and curtains only work when they are closed, they block our wonderful winter views, and they eliminate our natural light. They also are difficult to clean, have to be replaced or repaired periodically, and don’t work well on reducing the heat that passes through our windows.

After 35 years of selling insurance, John Parr built himself a wood shop.

And he decided to do something with all those apple crates in the shed.

John Parr’s apple crate collection reads like a living history book of Nelson County’s apple country: Silver Creek in Tyro. The Arrington Cold Storage. Deer Rock Orchard in Faber. W.T. Harvey & Sons in Lovingston. And that’s just a sampling.

But before we get into the story behind John’s apple crate project, we begin with his “Honey Do” list. Many men aren’t fond of them, but John actually loves making repairs. To be more specific, he loves to bring new life into old pieces of furniture.

“I love doing the repair work,” he said, noting that with four children and several grandchildren, he’s always had a lot of repairing to do. “To sort of repair what a carpenter did 150 years ago on a piece of furniture, to try to put it back like it was – it’s just sort of a challenge.”

Woodworking is in John’ blood. His father and grandfather worked in sawmills and carpenter shops and while it’s always been something he himself enjoyed, he didn’t get the chance to dive headfirst into woodworking himself until after he retired.

John worked for 35 years with Farm Bureau Insurance and in addition to wood working, raised cattle as a hobby. But when he retired (from both) about 10 years ago, he built a workshop and started spending a lot of time there.

“I just love getting in the workshop,” he said.

Nowadays, in addition to doing repairs on antiques, John is making some unique pieces of his own.

For years, he’s been collecting old apple crates and apple barrels and turning them into decorative pieces. But when his brother-in-law had a different idea, John thought, “Why not?”

“My brother-in-law was really intrigued by those apple boxes and he needed a headboard for his bed and asked me if I could make it,” said John, who just finished the head board for the king-sized bed.

One of John’s all-time favorite creations, though, is a 7-sided game table.

“I belong to a group and we play [cards] every two weeks,” he explained.

“I always wanted a game table, but I wanted one with 7 sides which is an odd size.”

Now John and each of his six buddies sit at their own special seat which has room for a drink, chips, and cards. John got help from a friend on the table and used homemade veneer wood for the first time.

“This friend sort of convinced me that in saving wood, you could get much more from a piece of wood and it’s still solid to use in a piece of furniture,” said John. “I have a little bit different of an opinion on veneer now than I did.”

With all the money and wood he was able to save, John was able to create a game table like no other. Each player sits at a wedge made out of a different kind of wood – but there aren’t any assigned seats because John likes to switch around.

“I was intrigued with the different types of wood,” he said. “I just considered my favorite woods and I just picked. I might sit at walnut this time and then next time I may sit at cherry.”

John and his wife love getting out on the road and checking out antique shops for things John can take back to the workshop and fix up. From there, he sells things mostly by word-of-mouth, but sometimes sells to dealers, too.

He also works on a lot of requests.

Any anything the wife wants fixed or built – which isn’t much nowadays, unless she decides to give a piece to one of their four children or four grandchildren – is first on the list. John said his wife actually kind of enjoys his hobby – even if it is pretty time consuming.

Curtis Sheets is no stranger to the world of Emergency Services. The Wintergreen Chief of Fire and Rescue has been in his current position for 11 years and before that served as an EMT in the Shenandoah Valley.

After more than 20 years in emergency services, not much comes new to Curtis – until now.

Curtis is the newly elected president of the Thomas Jefferson EMS Council, or TJEMS. After the previous president decided to step down – she’d been in office for about 15 years – Curtis was chosen to be her successor. And now he’ll be sitting next to fellow Nelson County resident Junior Thompson, the TJEMS Vice President.

As Curtis says, when things go well in the EMS world, TJEMS doesn’t have as much to do. But in today’s tricky budget environment, the organization’s a bit busier. The council does everything from working with hospitals to create standard protocol to volunteering at the Rural Access Medicine (RAM) program.

Curtis is looking forward most, though, to helping out the council as well as the separate EMT squads in his new role.

“It’s very important to rural areas

like Nelson to have this kind of network available,” he said.

One of Curtis’ TJEMS colleagues who thought he’d be perfect for the job is the Executive Officer of the organization, Stephen Rae. “Because of his business knowledge and his experience and Wintergreen,” said Stephen. “And he’s been around EMS for a long time. He has a lot of knowledge to come around to us and help us in our role.”

Not to mention his personal qualities.

“He is very intelligent. He is very easy-going. He thinks things through before acting on them. And he’s very personable,” said Stephen.

Curtis has been an active member of TJEMS for a while and is excited for his new role. While being selected as president is an honor, for Curtis, the best feeling comes from somewhere else.

“The honor for me is that my peers, my colleagues who I think a whole lot of, thought enough to ask me to do it,” he said. “There are some really, really smart and talented people in that network and I was just very honored when they said they’d really like me to do this. That’s the honor.” NCL

Dissecting your Pay stub As somewhat of a tomboy in my growing up years, I usually liked all things squiggly and outdoorsy. But, it was a different story in science lab when we had to dissect a frog and then an earthworm. I just couldn’t figure out how I could learn anything by cutting those creatures up. I would much rather see what the frog might be eating for dinner and then help that little fellow get back in the water!

You might have the same feeling about your paycheck … no desire to see what’s inside … just bank it and hope you can stretch the funds until you see the next one. But, it’s a good idea to take a real hard look at the guts of your check at least once a year – and preferably early in the year - to make sure everything is operating as it should.

Taxes – FICA and Medicare – Social security taxes, also known as FICA taxes, are withheld at the rate of 6.2 percent of your gross paycheck. Medicare taxes are withheld at the rate of 1.45 percent. These rates are the same for everyone, regardless of income level, although there is a cap on the total FICA withholding.

You cannot claim exemption from these taxes.

As part of the recent tax package passed by Congress, the FICA taxes have been reduced (only for 2011) to 4.2 percent. Instead of spending this extra amount, consider using it to reduce credit card and other consumer debt.

Taxes – Federal and State – These withholdings are based upon the filing status and exemptions claimed on the forms that you completed for your employer. The more exemptions that you claim; the lower the withholding.

Hours and rates – Most of us, particularly if you are paid on an hourly basis, will generally check this part to make sure we were paid the correct amount. If you are eligible

If changes are warranted, you just need to file new forms with your employer. You should also consider updating your withholding if you have significant changes, such as the purchase of your first home, changes in your family status, or changes in the number of your dependents. And, with the confusion regarding recent tax law changes, many taxpayers will find that these amounts need to be adjusted.

Many employees, especially students and part-time workers, may be eligible to claim exemption from Federal and State withholding. This will increase your take-home pay and possibly eliminate the need for filing a tax return to claim the refund.

You may find that some minor adjustments to your withholding will provide a nice increase in your take home pay. Take advantage of this extra saving to reduce your consumer debt or increase your savings. You’ll be glad you did!

A 2010 year-end market summary

I know, I know, I sound like a broken record. For years now, I have been asking “Are we there yet?”

Last year, with guarded optimism, I reported that we may have finally arrived. After careful review of statistical data for 2010, it does appear that our market is stabilizing and even improving … progression is perhaps in baby steps rather than giant leaps forward. In essence, we are selling more homes, but not for more money.

Homes Sold; It seems that the Charlottesville area market has stabilized with sales relatively unchanged.

There were 2,707 homes sold in the Charlottesville area in 2010 compared to 2749 in 2009. While the overall Charlottesville market place is slightly down by 42 sales (-1.5%), the Nelson market experienced the largest growth in number of sales. Albemarle (+.5%), Fluvanna (+10.7%), Greene (+8.4%), and Nelson (+34.3%) showed an increase in sales for the year. All other areas

were down from last year: Charlottesville (-18.9%), Louisa (-7.3%), and Orange (-25.7%). The Charlottesville market experienced a spike in sales during the first half of the year, up by 19.2%, but slowed after the expiration of the tax credit. Nelson, perhaps because of Wintergreen and second home sales, did not follow the same trend. Nelson ended the year strong. Nearly 45% of the sales occurred in the first 6 months when the tax credit was in place, and 55% occurred after it expired.

Median Sales Price; The median sales price within the overall Charlottesville market has stabilized with a slight increase of 1.2% while Nelson reported the greatest drop in median price, down by 4.7%. This is still an improvement, because in the previous year the median dropped by 7.2%. The drop in median could be indicative of an increase in foreclosures and short sales; approximately 12% of the properties sold in Nelson

in 2010 were considered distressed sales. Even though the median price dropped in Nelson to about $260,000 it is still higher than the surrounding area of Charlottesville, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Orange; Albemarle County is the only Charlottesville area marketplace with a higher median sales price.

Price Per Square Foot (Finished); All areas showed a slight decrease in the average price per square foot from 144 in 2009 to 139 in 2010. Nelson County, thanks to the large number of resort properties, has historically led the way in price per square foot. However, this year it dropped below Charlottesville. (Average price per finished sq ft in 2010: Albemarle 147; Charlottesville 166; Fluvanna 116; Greene 128; Louisa 111; Nelson 164 which is down from 171 in 2009, 192 in 2008, and 209 in 2007.) * If you factored out the resort properties, the sq ft price for Nelson was about 140.

Inventory of Homes for Sale & Days on Market (DOM); Within the overall Charlottesville marketplace, DOM has become more stable (117 in 2010 compared to 120 in 2009) and inventory of homes has dropped to 2,721 homes compared to this same time period in 2009 with 2,877 and in 2008 with 3,086. However, DOM for Nelson increased to 176.

This is a reminder to properly price a property when it is first listed. Price reductions may eventually get the home sold, but not in a timely manner.

My words of advice in 2011: buyers - get off the fence; sellers - price your homes to sell, not sit!

Lily Tyler moved to Schuyler from Northern Virginia in 1946 at the age of 11 because her dad grew up in the area and wanted to come back.

“We thought we were moving off to the end of the earth,” remembers Lily.

But more than 60 years later, she wouldn’t think of living anywhere else and neither would her husband of almost 54 years, Talmadge Tyler, Jr. “You know most of the people,” said Talmadge of the Schuyler area. “It’s a quiet little village. You don’t have too many problems.”

Lily was a year ahead of Talmadge in school, but it was a small community so they’ve known each other since she moved to Schuyler. They didn’t start dating until after high school, though, and neither can remember exactly what happened.

“I think we just sort of looked at one another and started going together,” said Lily.

They both retired in 1993. Talmadge worked at the soapstone quarry until it closed and then at Sperry Marine in Charlottesville. Lily worked as an accounting clerk at Centel (turned Sprint) for 34 years – the only job she ever had.

While they were both working and raising one daughter in Schuyler, Talmadge did a lot of the cooking around the house, but these days they’re both doing a lot of cooking.

A few months ago, the Tylers took on the great big job of hosting the senior luncheon held monthly at the Walton’s Museum in Schuyler.

Another woman had been organizing the luncheons for about 8 years, but when her health caused her to step down, the Tylers stepped in to make sure the luncheon continued.

“I think it was basically because we didn’t want to see it go,” said Lily. “We knew people enjoyed being there once a month and talking and playing Bingo and we didn’t want to see it not happen.”

But it was actually Talmadge who volunteered the couple.

“But you know, it hasn’t really been that bad,” said Lily. “I have enjoyed it really.”

Each month, the couple – with the help of a few others – plan, shop for, prepare, and cook for the luncheon, which usually ends up serving about 100 meals. In addition to the attendees, Talmadge started a program that delivers lunches to those who can’t make it due to health or other reasons.

Every month they scour the supermarkets for sales and get enough to serve all those who are looking for a good lunch and some fun times – most of the attendees are local seniors, but people come from all over the region and no one is really picky about their ages.

They’ve had everything from turkey with cream potatoes and green beans to spaghetti, but most people come for the socializing as well as the food.

Talmadge may have done a lot of cooking, but so has Lily who had a large family and grew up cooking church functions. Now, though, neither could host this luncheon alone so their teamwork is imperative – and it comes easily.

“We’ve always worked together,” said Lily. “No matter what we did, we worked together.”

Talmdage agrees completely. He said the trick to a long, successful marriage is just like anything in life.

“You have to give and take,” he said. “You don’t’ need a boss. You do things together.” NCL

Saving the Bay A lot of fingers are pointed at common agricultural practices for their negative impact on the Chesapeake Bay. A lot of blame is put on the farmer for not fencing off creeks and for the use of fertilizers (yes, even organic) and the subsequent runoff. Environmentalists have boarded their kayaks and canoes and headed upstream in search of dew claws in the creek and manure in the mud – yes, both undeniable sources of both sedimentation and nitrogen. However, perhaps we are misplacing the majority of the blame on this much needed and diminishing faction of our society and should instead take a look right outside our kitchen windows. Today’s landscape revolves around an often ill-informed yet fully motivated gardener working in the shadows of a ‘corporate catered’ insect, disease and weed-free lawn with enough N, P & K to sustain twice over a multitude of livestock or crops that may be living in the pastures of the fading family farm. Working within a barrage of chemicals, the unsuspecting home gardener attempts to prevent, protect and provide for their landscape in multiple, ill-timed applications no better at creating an Eden than slash-and-burn techniques found in the southern Hemisphere. But this is not to their blame.

Think about it: we now have ‘Feed Any Season’, ‘Feed & Control Weeds’, ‘Feed & Control Bugs’, ‘Feed for the Fall’, ‘Feed New Grass’ and on and on. Urban nitrogen runoff pours more unnecessary algae feeding nutrients into the bay than any farm could ever produce. Here’s why: A typical fertilizer is applied at the rate of 16 lbs (33-3-6) per 5,000 sq ft. Unfortunately, it does not end here. Since weight is where the fertilizer company makes money, they have added a carrier (fertilizer) to just about every product that they market including pre-emergent herbicides and preventative insecticides. In

our desire to build a better lawn, they have also convinced us that spring green, summer green and our normal fall fertilizer are all pertinent to the perfect lawn. Therefore after a ‘spring green-up’, a crab-grass preventer, a Japanese beetle preventer, a ‘weed and feed’ in the summer and our end-ofthe-year feeding, the average lawn can see as much as 5X the recommended amount of fertilizer added as compared to that of the fields of the local farmer. Now we add in another killing element – the absence of a buffer zone. Watch your lawn during a rain storm; it does not take long to notice that the runoff of an urban lawn typically makes it quickly to pavement, a non-permeable medium, and then straight into the local creek, stream or storm water collection area. This water, now heavily laden with nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium, heads towards our marsh lands in the bay to produce algae or a precipitate (cloud) that ultimately suffocates life in her waters. Contrasting with the farmer who is using 1/5 the rate through soil sampling and whose property is typically bordered by a buffering zone of vegetation.

The answer you wonder? Education. Understand your lawn needs with a soil sample test from your local extension service and apply your nutrients accordingly – mainly to not only time those fertilizer applications in just the fall, but to divide 1 large application into 3 smaller, separate ones. Realize what to expect of your lawn while living in central Virginia – mainly a brown lawn in the dead of summer is par for course.  Finally, apply your pesticides raw instead of with the carrier. If we can do this small thing, maybe the struggling local farmer can get off of environmentalists legislation’s ‘Most Wanted List’ and can focus on growing their crops ‌ and the bay and her bounty will be here for future generations.

This time of year that is one of the more common questions I hear. When the weather turns cold and people are indoors together more and more, especially in school, illnesses abound.

Germs are passed and it seems everyone gets sick.

We’ve all had it: it starts with a scratchy throat or a runny nose. Maybe there is some coughing. A fever isn’t uncommon early on. These symptoms are all part of what we all know as the common cold. Here to make us all miserable for a few days, it is basically a big nuisance. Usually, if you wait it out, it does it’s damage and is gone within a week. The common cold is caused by a virus. As you probably know, there is no medicine that can cure a virus; it just has to run its course.

But, sometimes that cold creates the perfect environment for bacteria to grow. (Just think of it, warm thick mucus, a bacteria’s dream!)

When that happens, things get worse.

A few specific symptoms help to clue us in to when a cold has become a

bacterial sinus infection. Symptoms lasting over seven days (especially if they are worsening), one-sided facial pain, thick nasty colored discharge from one side of the nose, pain into the teeth, and little help from taking over the counter decongestants are all signs that your cold has turned into a bacterial infection. If this is happening, it is time to see your doctor.

So, what can we do to avoid getting to this point? Try to avoid getting sick in the first place. Wash your hands often, eat a well balanced diet, drink lots of water, get plenty of exercise and fresh air, and sleep enough (around eight hours for most folks). If a cold is coming on and the sinuses are feeling clogged, try over the counter decongestants (ask your doctor which are safe if you have medical problems). Saline nasal washes can sometimes help.

Staying Power So as we continue into the New Year, we have stuck to all of our resolutions and are making great progress in taking care of our health and wellness … right? Which planet is she writing from? If my kitchen is anything like yours, I am still trying to rid it of holiday treats. It is certainly easy to find excuses to avoid exercising: the weather, less daylight, the drive to the gym is too long, too busy, my hair is dirty, too tired and on and on.

What keeps the regular exercisers motivated to stay with the program?

Some have an internal drive to stay fit, some exercise for stress relief, some notice health benefits and know they must exercise to reap those benefits, some exercise to reduce medical risk factors (diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, heart disease) and a small percentage of individuals actually enjoy exercising.

Can you ever become a successful exerciser if you don’t fall into any of the above categories? Of course not. You may need a few helpful

strategies to stick with your program.

Here are some recommendations: Exercise with a friend and keep regular appointments. It makes the time go faster and the time is enjoyable as you look forward to spending it with your friend.

Variety is the spice of life. Change your program with the help of a personal trainer to challenge your body.

Add an exercise class one day a week such as yoga. Your fitness level will improve by doing a variety of types of exercise.

Use tools such as an iPod to listen to your favorite music or kindle to read books to make the time more enjoyable.

Set reasonable and objective goals each month and reward yourself when you reach the goal.

Find the type of exercise and arena that you enjoy so that you are more apt to exercise.

Keep an exercise log recording the amount, type, duration and how you feel to mark your progress. Avoid skipping more than two days in a row without exercise.

At just over one year old, sisters Moxie and Tugger are too young to realize how good they’ve got it as part of the Caudill family business. But they’ll figure it out soon enough.

The two young British Labradors are the newest additions to Winterwoods Homes, a family-owned business that operates in Nelson out of Stoney Creek but has an international presence.

Moxie and Tugger’s predecessors in the family biz are Jeffery Caudill, a “homegrown product” who spent about 20 years in the investment and financial services industry, his wife Kathy Caudill, a former special education tutor, and her daughter (Jeffery’s step-daughter) Krisi Holland, who signed on after she realized her job as the manager of a Charlottesville coffee shop was taking more than she had to give.

“It’s different,” acknowledges Krisi who lives less than a mile away from her mom and step-dad in Stoney Creek, but she likes it nonetheless.

“I’ve worked for corporate companies for a while now and it is much different than anything I’ve ever done, but I really enjoy it. It’s relaxed yet functional. It’s fun and at the end of the day we’re a family.”

Her mom definitely agrees.

“Most of the time it’s wonderful,” said Kathy, who often jokes that she is VP of Everything at Winterwoods Homes. “But at times it can be frustrating.”

Another common joke around the house is that the only thing that isn’t so great about the job is that she can’t ever come home and complain to her husband if her boss had been a jerk.

“But I love my husband and daughter as part of my work life,” said Kathy.

Their business, Winterwoods Homes, is an architectural design, build, and real estate investment business that developed and uses the “Best-of-theBest” partner program and business model. Jeffery created the program because he knew that even though this was his passion, he had a few things to learn. So he sought out partners in all of the most important areas of business and those partners, along with the hard work of Jeffery, Kathy, and Krisi, have made Winterwoods Homes the success it is today.

More than a design trend, Winterwoods’ use of reclaimed materials is one way the company introduces historical and natural elements to its new homes. A marriage of antiqued beams and local stone, the homes have a way of blending into the environment. With a beckoning glow, these homes feel alive.

Winterwoods is coming up on its fourth anniversary this month – February 28 is the company’s founding day as well as Jeffery’s birthday, so it’s easy for everyone to remember. And in the few short years since its founding, Winterwoods Homes has helped design dream homes around the world.

“We have grown the company exponentially every year since,” said Jeffery, who doesn’t claim to be an artist but thinks that he might be getting close to being able to call himself a designer.

Many of the designs Winterwoods Homes has come from ideas, wishes, or dream home features from Jeffery’s mind, especially the Big Nelly Lodge, which he designed for his own family.

Jeffery’s worked with a lot of family-owned business over the years through the investment business, and he’s seen some that run smoothly and some that don’t, but he says his own family business has been lucky.

“Mine has been one of great pleasure, one of great frustration, and one of great peril,” he said.

“You never know what you’re going to experience in a single day, but there’s a good chance you’ll experience every emotion known to man.”
