I was in the middle of something the other day when Mr. Pancake called (online Scrabble). I just knew getting into a conversation with a breakfast menu item would have most certainly messed up my move.

But fortunately, Pancake left a message. Even though I was initially startled by the display on the caller ID, who wouldn’t want to talk to a Pancake?

Mrs. Pancake had left voice mail but Mr. Pancake picked up when I called back. He and the missus had seen our story last month about the soccer camp and wanted to sign up their grand kids for it next year. What a sweet, thoughtful man! And here I was, ignoring his wife’s phone call because of her surname.

What’s in a name?

So goes the famous line in Romeo and Juliet. As members of two warring families, the couple sealed their fate by choosing love over a family name.

So, in reality, a name does mean a lot, though it necessarily shouldn’t.

Even so, we’re still not spilling the beans on our little girl’s name. Not until she is born. So, ha! We haven’t

even told our aging parents what the name is. Double ha!

Back to call screening. It’s not that we are anti-conversation, it’s just that phone communication seems to be so much more intrusive than a simple email or chatting with someone faceto-face. Our philosophy regarding television is similar. We are not anti-video.

We just choose to consume our video over the internet or offline, via DVDs. So, if you need to call us, please don’t be offended if it goes to voice mail or if Adam answers the phone and drops it in his shopping cart. Unless of course you are Mr. or Mrs. Pancake.

Rising alcohol levels Part I Rising alcohol levels in wine seem to be the trend, and not just in the 15-plus percent Zinfandels coming out of California or the highly alcoholic and jammy Shiraz bombs of Australia—but also all those wines of the Languedoc that for so long were a nice dinner-table level of 12% or 12.5%. While many disagree with me, I think that with some notable exceptions wines above 13.5% are hard to pair with food…my opinion bending when it comes to super-sauced and rich game dishes or the fare of southwestern France, cassoulet and such.

Why are levels rising? Some theories include global warming, Robert Parker’s palate, and appeasing an American public who demands higher alcohol. Also improved methods of viticulture mean grapes are picked riper than they once were; modern strains of yeast are more efficient at converting sugar into alcohol.

But why is high alcohol a problem? To answer, I ask back: isn’t wine to be drunk with a versatile range of food? Wine with food is such a natural marriage it seems odd to have

anything else. Wine in moderation actually stimulates the gastric juices which break down food, whereas other beverages including water dilute the digestive process making the stomach work twice as hard. But just because we drink wine with food does not mean that the wine should overpower the food, which is what wine with high alcoholic levels does. I find also that for obvious reasons I can drink far less of the high-alcohol wines with a meal, and part of the pleasure of the long, many-coursed meals is to try multiple and different wines throughout.

However, as temperatures drop and the nights cool off, heavier wines with more alcohol are a natural choice, complimenting not only cooler days, but heavier fare eaten traditionally to ward off winter’s chill. To compromise: Domaine Richeaume Côtes de Provence Tradition, 2008 – Domaine Richeaume has been a special favorite ever since I first worked on the sunny shores of the fabled Côte d’Azur more than twenty-five years ago. I can also remember ordering cases of Richeaume when older and unemployed and living not in the glitz and glitter of the French Riviera, but in a state of

somewhat ignominy at home with my mother after returning from France.

Roughly equal parts Cabernet and Grenache. The idea behind this once frowned upon but now (at least for Richeaume) classic blend is to combine the masculine austerity of the Cabernet with the feminine opulence of the Grenache. Dark, rich with sumptuous aromatics, flavors and enough tannins to age, or to drink now and feel healthy about it. $26.99 Alcohol 13.5% Domaine Cayron, Gigondas, 2007 – I can never resist a good Gigondas; it could be 16% alcohol and I’d happily drink it. At 14 %, Domaine Cayron, like most Gigondas, holds its own. It’s beautifully balance and the alcohol, while definitely making itself known, does not overpower. Spicy, with nuances of dark cherries, blackberries, blueberries, pepper, wood and meat, this is a wine to pair with strong cheeses and game dishes. The vintage 2007 was an exceptional year for the southern Rhône; buy up any ‘07s you can find and drink now or equally, age. $26.99 Join Kay in the Southern Rhône Valley in April 2011. What a great question! Before I answer it, please let me introduce myself. My name is Darin Martin, and I am a lifelong resident of Central Virginia, and a local business owner. Having said that , I truly understand why people move to Nelson County, and never leave. It is a place that is rich in history, culturally diverse, relatively small, and of course the natural beauty. Ah yes, the majestic views of the Blue Ridge, the spring flowers, the plush greens of summer, and the lovely golds, oranges, and crimsons of Autumn.

Most people I know, including myself want to enjoy our natural surroundings as much as possible. We hike, bike, take walks, Sunday drives, and play golf. Another trend I have noticed over the years is that we want to enjoy all of those splendors even when we don’t have time to be active or just want to relax. One way this has been accomplished is by adding more, and larger windows to our homes. The upsides to doing this are obvious. We receive much more natural light, and of course those views!

Unfortunately, everything has a downside. We didn’t consider how much heat enters our home through the glass. Then there’s that awful fading. Who knew that the sun destroyed everything so fast. Now are floors, furniture, carpet, and artwork are a different color.

This brings us back to the original question. What can I do? Since blinds and curtains only work when they are closed, they block our wonderful views, and they eliminate our natural light. They also are difficult to clean, have to be replaced or repaired periodically, and don’t work well on reducing the heat that passes through our windows.

For several years after moving to Virginia, Brooke Conover told friends and colleagues that her husband was a potter while Judd Jarvis, the supposed potter, stood by, sadly shaking his head.

Despite his Master of Fine Arts from Nebraska at Lincoln, the artist felt that since he wasn’t actively pursuing his craft, he couldn’t legitimately call himself an artist.

And just as Brooke began to say to herself,

“We’ve got to get this kiln going,” the couple found the opportunity to buy a house in Afton, build a workshop for Judd and finally get his kiln up and running.

“And I could see the psychological difference, a difference in attitude or just feeling or self-image or self-esteem once he was able to get his hands back in clay,” said Brooke who has an MBA from Nebraska, works in human resources for Albemarle County and jokingly refers to herself as Judd’s enabler. “It was sort of like a fish who’d been out of water for too long.”

Judd is what is called a functional potter and spends most of his time creating things that can be used in the home like mugs, vases, plates and pots.

“I got excited about making something I could use in daily life and interact with,” said Judd. “I like to make things that are of service.”

But that doesn’t mean they’re all function and no form. No, in fact, it took a while to get the ball

rolling on Judd’s studio partly due to the specialized nature of his work.

Instead of using a traditional glaze for his pots and pitchers, Judd uses a type of firing called salt firing.

“I get my pots up to about 2300°F and I introduced salt into the kiln and it combines with the silicone that’s present in the kiln body and basically forms its own glaze,” the artist explained.

But because of the salt, the kiln must be made of special bricks – bricks that are too heavy to ship.

Which is why Judd, a self-proclaimed Jack of all trades, had to build the kiln himself. And by that time – what with trying to follow building codes and still bring in some kind of income – Judd hadn’t touched clay in about five years.

“It seemed like it was slow to get there and now

it seems like it’s going 60 miles an hour,” said Judd, who now has to post about six months of calendar up in his studio, a former one-car garage.

“It’s starting.”

Judd has already applied to and been accepted into the Artisan Center of Virginia. He’ll be taking part in the Artisan’s Studio Tour Nov. 13 and 15.

And he attributes much of what he’s been able to accomplish to the area.

“Nelson’s a great county,” he said. “I’m in a really nice spot.”

“It’s been a very welcoming community,” agreed his wife. “When [Judd] first came down here and went over to their studios, they were very encouraging and still are. It’s sort of like if you need a cup of sugar you can ask your neighbor. It’s a very sharing, welcoming environment.” NCL

Tips for Purchasing Land

Life is about choices and sometimes having too many options can make it hard to focus. There are many more homes on the market now than in years past. If you are a buyer and still have not been able to find your dream home, perhaps it is time that you switch gears and look for a dream lot to build exactly to your specifications. You are a good candidate for a land purchase if you tend to look at a home and see the shortcomings instead of the possibilities. This would be the right home “if only” it had southern exposure, overlooked water, was situated further from the road, had more shade trees etc… When you spend more time outside looking at the land features, than inside looking at the home features, you know that your dream house really starts with finding your dream lot. Once you locate your dream parcel, here are some quick tips to consider before making an offer.

Suitability; ensure that the topography accommodates your specific building plans. Have the builder visit the location for a site review. If unable to coordinate this before the offer, incorporate a study period into the offer. In case the site is not suitable, be certain that you can terminate the contract without penalty.

Right of Way & Road Maintenance; there should be a deeded right-of-way in place for land not accessible by a public road. The deed should give you and future owners the right to access the land.

When the land is not accessible via a public road, verify that a road maintenance agreement is in place so that everyone utilizing it is responsible for upkeep.

Utilities; if public water and sewer are not available, consider making an offer contingent upon these factors. Allow for a soil study period to ensure that a septic system,

Check availability of electric, gas, cable and telephone services.

Easements; does someone else have the right to access the property? Find out before you make an offer, or add a contingency that you must approve of existing easements.

Restrictions; check for deed restrictions to ensure that you can build as planned. If the land is located within a subdivision, thoroughly review covenants and restrictions to understand other potential limitations such as minimum house size. Also review zoning ordinances to ensure that the land can be utilized per your intentions.

Survey; retrieve a plat/survey and locate the boundaries. If the survey is not current and there’s a question about the number of acres in the tract, make an offer for “X” dollars per acre as determined by a new survey. This will ensure that you are

getting the exact amount of acreage purchased and nothing more or less.

Environmental Liabilities; ask if there are any known underground oil or gas storage tanks and if they exist negotiate who is to pay for removal.

Other Contingencies; evaluate the “what ifs” - things that could make the property unusable for your purposes. Add these to the offer as contingencies, meaning if they don’t happen the contract can be terminated.

Anne Kidd has a great recipe for the spice combination required for the

best apple butter.

But don’t even try asking for it.

It’s an old family recipe. Well, families.

Anne, whose maiden name is Seaman, is one of many family members who helps run The Packing Shed, an apple packer, shipper, and retailer in Tyro. The Packing Shed is owned by Flippin-Seaman, Inc., a business that represents two orchards: Silver Creek Orchard, which is owned and run by the Flippin family, and Seaman’s Orchard, which is owned and run by the Seaman family.

“It’s two separate families that grow apples and have two different businesses, but they formed a corporation,” explained Anne, who said the corporation was formed in 1974 when each family’s children began taking a more active role in running the orchards. “They come together to pack, ship and retail the apples.”

But it’s not just retailing.

The Apple Butter Festivals this year are Oct. 2 and 16.

“As long as I can remember, and I’m going on 37, they’ve always made apple butter here,” remembered Anne.

In the late 1970s, Mennonites used to come to the festivals each year and make the apple butter.

That’s when the festival was more adult oriented.

But as the festival became more lively and family-

friendly, Anne said the Mennonites began to feel uncomfortable with all the live music so Richard Seaman, her father, took over the apple butter.

Nowadays it’s Carter Parr and Brian Kidd who are in charge of the 12-hour apple butter-making process. And Anne comes in at the end to add the spices.

When the festival first started, the apple butter wouldn’t come off the 30-gallon kettle until 3 p.m. or later, but now it’s ready around lunch time.

“We usually have guys that stay here all night watching the apple butter… it has to be constantly stirred,” said Anne. “They put it on around midnight or so, so it comes off at a more reasonable hour.”

But don’t worry, early birds – in addition to the two batch minimum (that’s more than 60 gallons!) they’ll make each day of the festival, they’ll have some ready for purchase all day long.

As Anne said, “not everyone wants to spend the day waiting for the apple butter to come off.”

Not with everything else there is to do: crafters, food, pony rides, a corn maze, a pick-your-own pumpkin patch, a kids tent full of games and crafts, live music and even wine tasting. NCL

Fifty years ago, Dr. Bob Raynor started a small, country clinic called Afton Family Medicine. Acquired some years later

by Martha Jefferson Hospital, the clinic has seen countless Nelson County residents in the last half century.

The original clinic sits at the intersection of Hillcrest Lane and Route 151 in Afton. It brought local healthcare to the county, but unfortunately didn’t always have everything a more modern facility would have. So after decades of practice, Afton Family Medicine is moving a few miles north and adding some state-of-the-art equipment while maintaining its priceless rural location and wellknown local doctors.

“We’re going from a facility that was basically an old house to a facility that is being built for a medical practice,” said Judy Tobin, director of physician services at Martha Jefferson Hospital, adding that the new facility will not only feature new technologies, but also be cleaner and provide better infection control.

And architect Robin Meyer definitely took the rural location into consideration as she designed the new building. She

said her main goal was to have the new facility fit into the rural area while still being a high-tech building.

“We’re out in a gorgeous spot,” she said at the new facility’s groundbreaking in early September. “So I tried to do something that had a feeling of the mountains.”

Even though MJH technically ran the clinic for many years, Dr. Bob stayed on as the clinic’s physician until he retired just a few years ago, leaving his practice in the hands of Drs. Stephen Schmitz and Charles Cole.

Dr. Steve, who started just five years ago as Dr. Bob began to prepare for retirement, knows that the last building saw 50 years of service.

“So we’re looking forward to the next 50 years,” he said.

Dr. Charles agrees and also looks forward to the new building, which should be completed late next summer.

“I think that this office will allow efficiency that we didn’t have at the old office,” he said. “It’s exciting to have a new building. It’s going to be good for the practice.

It’s going to be good for the community. It’s going to be fun.” NCL

The Annual Mulch Parade Every year, like clockwork, many of us order a load of mulch to tuck our shrubs away for a long winters nap. Mulch has a blanket effect on our plantings – holding in moisture and heat while creating a barrier against unwanted weeds. Although these are all very strong and much needed protections, all too often we tend to mulch too much and create a barrier that not only keeps out the unwanted weeds but often impedes growth of many of your perennial and native wildflowers and strangles shrubs and trees by creating a aerobic (zero oxygen) layer that is impenetrable to water. Layer after layer build up and create a blister-like mound of mulch surrounding trees and other plantings. A suitable alternative is compost layering.

Compost layering is a process.

First you need to break up the built up layer of mulch in your landscape with a hoe or rake to introduce oxygen to aerobic areas. Then you need to add in 1-2 inches of already decomposed debris (compost) around and between your landscape plants.

Since this material has already been through the composting process involving naturally high heat and oxygen (from turning) most all diseases and seeds have been killed leaving just ‘black gold’ for your landscape. It is the natural process that your mulch would have eventually succumbed to anyway – you have just eliminated the process that would have taken years and tons of Nitrogen to complete. The benefits of compost or organic matter are numerous and highly sought by landscape professionals and gardeners alike: Improves soil structure (mainly oxygen, moisture & nutrient holding capacity) Aids in microbial activity

Attracts garden derivatives and beneficial insects (earthworms) Suppresses soil born diseases Holds nutrients (both future added material and the innate organic, slow release forms found in compost) Acts as a pseudo mulching agent thereby increasing blanket effect on roots for winter So how does all of this help you to grow better shrubs, flowers and vegetables? A major factor in determining how soil aids in growth and flowering of species is its nutrient holding capacity (professionally known Cation Exchange Capacity or CEC). Simply put, nutrients must be dissolved to be available to the plant.

Once these nutrients are dissolved they carry a charge that is attracted to an opposite charge in your soil – in particular high organic matter and clay. Working together, your clay and compost work to form a reserve for the plant in holding nutrients – nutrients that will be available for growth, flowering and fruit production. Although clay soils naturally have a high CEC, compost is the workhorse by offering not only an almost equal CEC to that of clay but the added benefits mentioned above – something clay soils cannot do alone. The end result, when the soil is prepared properly, is a wonderful soil strata that is unique to our soils found right here in central Virginia – a combination that is impossible to replicate in soil veins comprised of sand or similar materials.

Compost layering is for all landscape gardens. While I have never visited a landscape where I felt that adding compost would not be advantageous, I have visited many landscapes where I felt that more mulch would definitely be counterproductive to the landscape plants – in particular perennials. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Weight Loss Part 5 If you have been reading my contributions to this column over the last several months, you will recognize the weight loss equation: Eat/Drink Less Calories + Burn More Calories= Weight Loss. I keep bringing it up because it is so important. If we become motivated and follow the equation and lose weight, so many diseases can be avoided and people live better.

I often get questions in the office about medical problems causing weight gain. Certainly there are problems that can cause weight gain, but they don’t do it outside of the above equation. In other words, you can’t gain weight without eating/drinking. There are certainly medicines that increase the appetite, and hypothyroidism slows the metabolism.

It is probably even more important for a patient that has these problems to know and live the weight loss equation. I try to encourage folks to recognize the medical syndrome that is in the way as an obstacle to weight loss or management, but not an insurmountable blockade. The truth is, I bet for every 20 people that want me to check labs and such looking

for a cause for weight gain only one of them has a medical reason to influence their weight. (It is still important sometimes to look for these problems, don’t get me wrong here.) Almost always it is eating habits and lack of exercise that is the culprit.

Another common question is “can I take a pill and lose weight?” There are a few FDA approved pills out there for weight loss. But, overall they have bad side effects (heart rhythm problems, greasy diarrhea etc), cost a lot, and only provide an average of 5-10% of body weight lost after a year of use. Therefore, I really don’t recommend them.

I think that a motivated person who is willing to work hard and follow the eat less/burn more calories equation will lose more than someone just taking a weight loss pill.

Remember: Get motivated, follow the equation, lose weight, live better!

Fibromyalgia and Exercise If you have fibromyalgia, you may experience deep muscular tender points and fatigue and exercise may stir unpleasant thoughts in your head.

Anxiety and pain prohibit many fibromyalgia sufferers from exercising.

However, gentle low impact exercise can be very beneficial for those who suffer from fibromyalgia.

Gentle exercise such as walking, swimming, yoga, tai chi, qigong, pilates and stretching increase the mobility in your joints, assist in weight management, increase your outlook on life, improve sleep and improve your sense of well being.

Gentle strength training, starting with light dumbbells and low repetitions, will build strong muscles to support the joints and ligaments. It also improves your function so that daily tasks are less of an effort.

Exercise increases your endurance, builds tone and improves coordination. Your physical well being has an overall bearing on your outlook.

Physical exercise releases endorphins in the body which help to reduce

stress and anxiety.

One of the keys to success is working with a knowledgeable professional when starting your program. Start slowly, set realistic goals and progress gradually. Often it helps to exercise in sessions of 15 minutes twice a day in the beginning as your muscles and joints accommodate to the physical activity.

It is a good idea to combine a cardiovascular activity such as walking or water aerobics with a stretching and strength activity. If you choose yoga or pilates; remember there are various styles of yoga and various levels of both yoga and pilates. Talk to the instructor ahead of time to ensure that the class is appropriate for you to avoid harming yourself.

As with any form of exercise, the hardest part is taking the first step.

There may be a fear of oncoming pain or fear of failure or fear that you won’t feel the benefits fast enough.

Try it - stick with it for life. I have seen even in the toughest cases, lasting benefits. You’ll regain your quality of life.

Community theater has been part of the Rockfish Valley Community Center since the very beginning. So has The Treasure Chest. And the use of the sports fields on the former elementary school grounds.

But the skate park? And the playground? The artists’ studios? The Tae Kwon Do classes? The community markets? Those all came later, thanks, in no small part, to people like the RVCC Board of Directors President Sarah Jane Stewart who said she loves being part of this place where people can come and really start something good.

Since it opened in March of 2000, the RVCC has more than met its goal of being a part of the Nelson County community.

“The Rockfish Valley Community Center got started as a grassroots effort by people who saved a building to use it for the community for people to get together,” said Sarah.

“And that’s what we’re still trying to do. And we want people to feel welcome and we want to encourage them to use our facilities.”

And from small studios and rental conference rooms to larger offices and a party-worthy auditorium, they’re at no loss of facilities.

In celebration of the center’s 10th anniversary, they’re opening all their doors (inside and out!) for a family-friendly celebration. In addition to an open house of all the artists-inresidence, visitors will enjoy an old fashioned cake walk, open mike, live music from the Buzzard Holler Boys, a play at the Hamner Theatre and refreshments.
