from thepublishers The only thing growing faster than the grass is Adam’s bangs. Which is a good thing because it means the boy’s growing, right?

He gave us a little scare the other week when he started turning down milk. The boy loves his milk but for some reason, it seemed like he was trying to outgrow it.

So we went on a cheese hunt.

Fresh mozzarella balls were already in the basket. So was a small brick of goat cheese. We’re not an eatfood-samples-at-the-grocery-store family but when we pushed the cart by a lady cutting up string cheese, we thought it was meant to be and God was watching over us. So Adam took one and put it in his mouth. Then he gave it back.

So we’re eating dinner later that night and we put a few eye balls – I mean mozzarella balls – on his plate.

Aside from peas, anything that rolls around on Adam’s ends up somewhere else. The dogs know this.

The good news is Adam ate his peas and some rice and once he had cleared the cheese, he reached for his milk and finished it.

Good boy.

Perhaps he is mirroring my strange first trimester food aversions. I’m not

really a believer in pregnancy cravings; I’d rather call them stupid food impulses. Like the time a bag of beef sticks with a box of rocky road fudge looked good to me. That’s a stupid food impulse.

There was the time about ten years ago Tommy and I were working on a tornado story in Nowhere, Arkansas and we stopped to eat lunch at a place in nearby Somewhere, Arkansas. My stupid impulse: Hot fudge sundae and a side of fries.

I bet Adam would eat that.

Rosé, yes way I love rosés so much that I can become surprised when not everyone shares my passion. If customers have ordered salmon, trout or red bell pepper pasta, I often push the rosés instead of red or white. So imagine my tender shock when I suggested a rosé and I received back, “Rosé, no way!”

It’s June, and time for us to say, “Rosé, yes way.”

Rosé is the red wine drinker’s white, or the red-drinker’s answer to summer. Rosé is also a great picnic wine, provided you can keep it well chilled; warm rosé is not so memorable. And rosé is extremely versatile, spanning the food spectrum and pairing equally well with those dishes reserved for white-only or red-only.

Windspiel rosé von Zweigelt – From Austria where I have rarely had a mediocre wine, Windspiel is an exceptional producer making biodynamic wines. The rosé is 100 % Zweigelt, exhibiting the hallmark cherry aromas. Look also for notes of strawberry and white peach. Smooth and soft on the palate this wine goes down way too easily. $10.99 Musar Rosé, 2008 – 100% Cin-

sault, Musar comes from Lebanon and the renowned Serge Hochar of Château Musar, one of the greatest wines of all time. Full-bodied and spicy with a slight apricot hint. Pair with Middle Eastern specialties like baba ganoush, kibbeh and kefta. $18.99 Muldersbosch, 2009 – Not only is this a beautiful rosé, but a great value. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine takes on sweet notes of strawberries, raspberries, watermelon and cherries. Pair with crab cakes, chicken satay, spring rolls with ginger dipping sauce, or sesame noodles. $16.99.

Château La Calisse, 2008 – This gorgeous wine is quintessential rosé, and when I think of Provençal wines, it gets no better. Made by winemaker Patricia Ortelli, La Calisse is all organic, delicate and elegant with aromas of white flowers and fresh peaches. Sip chilled on the terrace in the shade of the Wisteria. $21.99.

Turkey Flat, rosé, 2007 – From Australia a country not particularly known for its pink wines, this rosé is a winner. With layers of fruit, great depth and complexity, it’s both earthy

and fruity, a fascinating blend of 62% Gernache, 22.3 (!) percent Shiraz, 9.7% Cabernet and 6% Dolcetto, that soft Italian grape. Pair with grilled salmon, herb-roasted turkey, fruit-glazed pork. Worth every bit of the price. $22.99 Muga, Rosado Rioja, 2009 – With a rose petal pink iridescence, Muga is beautiful to behold, but even better to taste. Citrus, pineapple, kiwi as well as apple and quince. Lee contact gives it depth and good acidity blends with a long honeyed finish.

Outstanding spring/summer sipping (quaffing!) wine. $12.99 Hillinger, Secco – Many of the rosés from Champagne are expensive, made from a high percentage of Pinot Noir and some Pinot Meunier, but this sparkling wine from Austria is a delicious bargain. 100 % Pinot Noir, it is elegant, medium-bodied, with notes of raspberries and wine berries. Serve before or throughout a meal. If only all sparkling winemakers could take instruction from Hillinger. $18.99.

“... What I’m trying to do is to pause and, for them and for me, not do this unconsciously but be aware,” says Elizabeth VanDeventer, owner of Davis Creek Farm. “I just stop and calm them and I say thanks. I say a prayer of gratitude in appreciation for their giving their life to us. I ask that they not suffer and that they nurture.”

Elizabeth has, over the course of their lifetimes, held each and every one of her chickens at multiple times in their lives. They all have names, too. All 1200+ of them. Well, kind of. All the male meat chickens are named Freddy and the girls are named Wilma. Laying hens are Henriettas and there are several cliques like the Puberty Peeps.

“It’s a joyful place,” she said.

Elizabeth grew up on a dairy farm and agriculture has always been a part of her life, but she and her husband, Tom DeChiara, only bought the farm they now live on with their three boys about a decade ago. The land was not quite suitable for growing produce (though they do have a garden for their own personal consumption), so the family decided to farm livestock locally as an alternative to factory farming. And while the former vegetarian says she and her husband do not encourage people to eat meat, per say, they do like to provide a healthy, organic, local alternative to supermarket meat.

Elizabeth VanDeventer believes strongly in raising and slaughtering the chickens in as humane a way as possible (above).

“To us, that way of raising animals is of no benefit to anyone,” said Elizabeth. She prefers the animals live good, healthy lives. “I’m looking at the chickens, they’re lounging around. They’ve got me trained, I think. They’ve got me working six and a half days a week to give them this luxurious life.”

Recently, Elizabeth and Tim (who works full time as a medical writer) received the Good Animal Husbandry Grant from the Washington, D.C. based Animal Welfare Institute. In years past, Elizabeth and her team would drive the chickens nearly three hours to a small-scale humane slaughter house, but the grant has allowed the family farmers to build a small processing facility of their own.

After Elizabeth calms them down and thanks a chicken for its lives, but before it is killed, Elizabeth or one of her three part-time employees stuns the creature so it won’t feel any pain.

And while it sounds pretty intense, Elizabeth says that butchering the chickens herself has made her appreciate her own life more.

“It just makes me feel very humble that I’m dependent on these creatures and I have a lot of respect for them,” she said. “I’ve learned that you can’t avoid that death is a part of eating food – it’s a reality.” NCL

Long-time Nelsonians may remember the Lions. Formed in 1984, the local chapter of the community service group helped local men, women and families with healthcare, eyecare, hearing aids and more. But in the early ‘90s, the group fizzled into nonexistence.

Until now.

Now, more than 25 years after the local chapter of the international organization formed here in Nelson, one of the original charter members, David Boor, and a group of nearly 50 other people are working together once again to help fill the needs of the community.

In addition to traditional Lions Club projects, the chapter sponsored a recent garden project at Tye River School and hope to

make “Bring a Kid Fishing Day” a reality this month.The Nelson County Lions Club, which meets twice monthly in Lovingston, is also starting a Leo Club for local youngsters interested in giving back.

Changing the outcome of an expired listing

Ponder this… as I review listing statistics in Nelson County there are currently more than 100 properties that have been listed for over a year. Twelve properties have actually been listed for more than 1,000 days!

Many of these listings have expired and been relisted, and relisted, and relisted… If you are a distraught home seller facing an expired or soon to expire listing, evaluate your circumstances and get inspired to turn a depressing situation into a positive outcome.

Check Motivation; If you are simply testing the waters, you may not have the proper motivation to attract a buyer. Don’t stigmatize your property by racking up unnecessary days on market. Excessive days on market may make your home “old news” and potential buyers may never even be alerted to the many price reductions.

Some buyers may assume that there is a problem with the home; otherwise someone would have bought it by

now. If you are not motivated to sell “today”, don’t put it on the market until “tomorrow”.

Consider the Presentation and Condition; Did you get showings?

The rule of thumb is that 10 showings should generate an offer, or at least a serious prospect. If your home is being shown, but is not yet sold, carefully evaluate feedback. Was the clutter blocking the window with a view?

Can you re-arrange furniture to create a better flow? Is the carpet worn and need replacing? Has maintenance been neglected? Understanding buyer objections can help you solve the problem. Many solutions, such as cleaning and de-cluttering, don’t even cost a dime.

Evaluate the Price; An overpriced home is not attractive! If the price is set too high, your home will be overlooked. How did you arrive at the price when you first listed? Did you insist on a list price based on personal expectations? Or did the agent provide

you with market data to predict the most likely sales price? Ask your agent for an update on the market conditions and get a new or revised comparative market analysis (CMA).

In a buyer’s market when price point is critical, you may need to look further into sales statistics and also understand the absorption rate. How long can you expect your home to be on the market before it is absorbed, i.e., sold? Do your homework! Price should always be market driven.

Review the Marketing; Agents are not all alike and neither are their marketing plans. It often takes more than a MLS entry, a sign and a lockbox to get results. Sit down with your agent and review the marketing plan.

Does your home have a strong online presence? Would it be advantageous to rev up print ads, place a flyer box, send out direct mail, create a virtual tour, or hold a broker open house? Does your agent solicit buyer feedback? Most importantly, does the agent communi-

cate with you? If the agent is aggressively marketing the property, the agent deserves your loyalty. However, if the agent listed and disappeared, it’s probably time for a change. Interview agents and shop for services. Your best value will most likely be the agent who stands apart from the crowd in services, and not price. Marketing your property can be costly. Hence, the agent looking to take your listing at a reduced commission may offer a reduction in services. Be careful; there is wisdom in that age old saying “you get what you pay for”.

Learn from your past experiences.

“When I was a kid, I grew up in Florida and I fell in love with the water and ocean life and water animals. I used to catch crabs in the mud and I just thought that was great. So now I come to work and I have to get in the ponds and get all wet and mess but I’m doing the same thing I was doing when I was 8 years old – playing with little critters and little fish.”

So says Thom Teears, the superintendant and one of only three full-time employees at the Montebello Fish Hatchery – the only one in the Commonwealth of Virginia east of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Only three of the five state-run hatcheries actually keep brood fish, spawn and hatch them. After the babies get to be about an inch or two long, those hatcheries will send them over to Montebello where Tom and his team works on growing them from those fingerlings into 10to 12-inch fish before releasing them into public waters.

“Obviously people like big fish, but we have so many that we stock that we can’t really keep them here long enough to get them huge,” said Tom, who lives in a house provided to him by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries right across the street from the hatchery.

Although, Tom said that sometimes he sees some pretty big ones in his ponds. The hatchery grows not only Brook Trout which are native to the area, but also Rainbow Trout

which are native to the western United States and Brown Trout which are originally from Europe.

Because the Montebello Hatchery is the closest one to the eastern part of the state, the workers there stock everywhere from here to the coast. Depending on the size of the body of water (and whether or not any trout live there natively), Tom and his workers will stock up to eight times per year.

Class A waters like the Tye River are stocked with trout eight times annually. Smaller bodies like Class Bs are infused five times each year and Class Cs (including The South River), just three.

There are exceptions, however. The Piney River is technically considered to be a Class B water, but due to the native Brooke Trout population that spawns in the fall, that particular body of water is only stocked during the spring months (the hatchery’s busiest time is earlyMarch to mid-May).

Beer, why, yes, there are a couple new breweries in town. But what about whisky? Don’t worry – it’s coming.

A while back, this magazine brought you news of the impending arrival of a distillery just north of Lovingston. Now we’re here to tell you that opening day is getting closer. “This is the year we build the distillery and start making whiskey,� said Pat Jones McCray of The Virginia Distillery Company/Eades Whisky.

Thanks to some recently passed legislation, the Distillery will act, in many ways, like the wineries and breweries currently operating in

Nelson. Not only will the Distillery be able to sell its product straight from the facility, but it will be able to have tastings, too. And Pat says they plan to have a small tasting room at first and build a larger visitors’ center further down the road.

But it’s important to note that for at least four years, Eades Whisky won’t be selling its own locallymade product. “Because one of the things that distinguishes this company is authenticity,� said Pat. “That’s why we’ve invested in these copper stills that you have to have. And then the other piece is the aging – waiting until it tastes good for you to sell it.�

So in the meantime, they’ll be selling an imported Scottish whisky that has recently won two

prestigious awards from an influential trade magazine. The second edition of that Eades Double Malt is already being made by Master Distiller Jim McEwan and sold not only here in Virginia, but also in Maryland and Washington, D.C. They’ll also be selling casks – a very common practice in Scotland.

Whisky-lovers can put a deposit on a cask and receive a whole bunch of bottled whiskey several years later.

And while Pat does love a good whisky, the recent Massachusetts transplant who loves the local artisan movement in food and beverage said that one of the best things about working with founder Joe Hungate on Eades Whisky has been just being here. “Nelson County has been really good to us.� NCL

A Stunning Combination Taking an assortment of plants and combining them into a mix that varies foliage texture, plant size and bloom season while using a complementary color palette is an art. On paper, there are many combinations that look great and plants may work well in a photo in a magazine or on the internet, but getting them to actually perform in the field is not as easy as it may seem. They are many factors to consider: exposure, zone, and soil requirements to name a few.

One combination that I have really enjoyed combines texture, season, color and size into a beautiful array of varying bloom cycles that will reward you for years to come. Best of all, it does it in the part sun garden.

As always, a hardscape is needed to really pull this one off – I use either a birdhouse or birdbath (those of you who know me probably already guessed as much).

Our plant selection for this garden is an array of colors, textures and bloom cycles that start early and continue to evolve throughout the season.

Even though an actual bloom may not be present, the presence of contrasting textures continues to reward all of those that pass by this garden. The list involves the following: Hosta Northern Exposure – deep blue green foliage with a nice sunset yellow variegated edge (1) Variegated Solomon Seal – upright erect deep green foliage with similar variegation as the hosta on a plant that really wants to move and multiple in the landscape and is great for cutting (5) Japanese Beech Fern – nice almost chartreuse green fern that wants to colonize an area over time (4-6) Woodland Phlox (light pink or light blue) – perhaps one of the least used phlox on the market, this phlox blooms its head off and is easy to grow. Use pink or blue and watch your show begin around the middle

of April. (3) Hardy Orchid – Bletilla striata is hardy and offers a nice fuschia bloom on erect, miniature iris-like foliage (5) Helleborus Cherry Blossom – also a recent introduction, this Hellebore is one of my favorites with its long display of white blooms with a deep fuchsia edge (3) Placement of these plants revolves around the placement of the hardscape which is the central focal point for this ‘garden room’. Then I typically use the Hellebore in the back, farthest away from the hardscape, as the plant backdrop. Since they will bloom first, bloom longest and are evergreen, I keep them as the form or backbone for the garden in a triangle around the hardscape. Mixed in just in front of them are the phlox and then the ferns (closer to the hardscape) remembering that each will ‘move’ and colonize so give them elbow room. Then on the other side of the hardscape is the lone hosta with the Hardy Orchid and Solomon Seal en masse behind it. Some tips: 1) let the area be a bit ‘overplanted’ as the combination that we are after involves each plant being in very close proximity to the other and 2) go light on the mulch as many of these do NOT like the all too traditional 2 inches of mulch per year (use compost instead to prevent damage to your plants).

Finally, experiment. The ingredients shown here are proven performers and can handle different arrangements, additional plants and different settings – just try to keep it to a tight color palette. Oh, and by the way, if you are not into amending & modifying the planting area, don’t waste your money or time – all of these plants require deeply amended soil that is well drained and rich in organic matter (you know, SamDirt).

By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine 2010 Weight Loss Part III Eat/Drink Less Calories + Burn More Calories = Weight Loss Above is the weight loss equation. It is simple to look at but not always simple to live. In my last columns I reminded us that 1) being overweight is flat out dangerous, and 2) we have to really be motivated in order to make the equation work. Now let’s look at the first part of the equation.

The first big obstacle I often observe in people concerned about their weight is a misunderstanding about how they ingest calories. I have a patient who told me he did not eat hardly anything, but admitted to drinking a case of Mountain Dew every day! The calories in soda, alcohol, and tea count just as much as the ones in donuts.

Another patient told me how hard she was working on eating smaller portions at meals, but realized she was eating a full bag of potato chips through the afternoon at her desk at work every day.

Snack calories count just as much

as meal calories.

The point is, we have to recognize where the calories going into our bodies are coming from.

Most of us are ingesting calories we don’t need, whether it is from an extra portion of healthy veggies after we are full, or an extra 4 sodas 2 donuts and a big portion of ice cream just because we like them.

If we can cut out 500 calories of food or drink swallowed per day we should lose a pound per week, which is a very healthy rate.

Find the extra calories in your diet and rid yourself of them. If you do that you will have the first part of the equation whipped. Last week I asked my patient who lost 40 pounds over several months how he did it. His response: “I quit eating so much.” Enough said.

Warming Up It is another beautiful Nelson County spring and the weekend warrior in us wakes up in these times. It is fun to get outside to garden, walk or play sports. Depending on your current physical fitness level, your body may have no problem jumping back into more physical activity or your body may experience aches and pains as you increase your activity level.

One way to prepare your muscles and joints for activity is to take a few minutes to warm the tissues. The “warm up” is a 10-15 minute period of time prior to your main physical activity. The goal is to prepare the muscles, joints, heart and lungs that more stressful physical activity (beyond sitting) is on the way. For example, if you are going to walk or cycle for exercise, take the first 10 15 minutes of that walk or cycle nice and easy then progress to a faster walk or more strenuous cycle. This period of time is crucial to warm the muscles and prepare the heart for more physical activity. It also helps

to reduce musculoskeletal injuries.

If you are going to play a sport such as tennis or golf, take 10-15 minutes to walk and stretch before hitting tennis or golf balls. It is important to warm the muscle prior to stretching. Even marching in place helps to gently increase your heart rate and warm the tissues prior to stretching. Often we are a rush to get to our activity and the warm up is forgotten. Too often, that is when an injury occurs. The other factor to remember is gradually work your way back into your activity level. In other words, don’t play three hours of tennis tomorrow after a winter without playing tennis. Give your body time to become conditioned and prepare it to prevent injuries.
