from thepublishers At the writing of this piece, the Staffords are sick. Tommy is standing with his back to the wood stove in his pajamas and can’t get warm. Adam’s nose is running but he’s gone down for a nap. On my desk in front of the keyboard is a roll of tissues. And a bag of cherry lozenges. I would love to tell you that we have a chicken roasting in the dutch oven but chicken soup requires a chicken and we are too puny to venture out into the wilderness and get one. A frozen pizza sounded just fine last night. It was adorned with pretty white discs of goat cheese and leaves of spinach, picked by hand, we are sure, by an Italian peasant in the Tuscan countryside. (If you hold up a shot of Nyquil in the light, it looks like a splash of chianti). The pilgrims didn’t have frozen pizzas. That had frozen feet because it was so incredibly cold up there. We can’t nor should we complain. At the most recent consignment sale at the Rockfish Valley Community Center, I picked up a complete set of the Pictorial Encyclopedia of American History. Printed in the 1960’s, Volume 1 opens up to a picture of the Statue of Liberty and the

first verse of My Country. ‘Tis of Thee, which was our country’s national anthem before The Star-Spangled Banner was adopted. Thanksgiving is discussed on page 49. In 1621, the Pilgrims feasted for three days. The three day feast is now a four-day feast filled with football and shopping. Or, at the Stafford house, Charlie Brown holiday DVDs. Adam may be too young to appreciate Linus’ Thanksgiving prayer but his stuffyheaded parents won’t be. Happy Thanksgiving! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz kpfaltz@mbc.edu www.basicnecessities.com

Virginia 1, California & France 0 Virginia Wine, Part III I return to Virginia after a quick detour recounting the Paris trip…and after tasting the wine class on several of our local wines, I’d have to say Virginia is coming out ahead. No joke. New vineyards in Virginia are flourishing. As there are some of the 140 or so, my mention is for those few in Nelson County as well as the three or four wineries outside Nelson whose merit is exceptional. Afton Mountain Vineyard, purchased in April by Toney and Elizabeth Smith, offers an Estate Reserve Sangiovese 2008- The 2008 Sangiovese is made from selected estate Sangiovese, blended with 20% Cabernet Franc. The unique growing site allows the opportunity to grow this grape that few others do. The 2008 Estate Reserve Sangiovese is a delicate and light-bodied Italian style wine, with light oak flavors and aromas of ripe fruit. Estate Reserve Chardonnay 2008- The 2008 Estate Reserve Chardonnay is made from 100% Chardonnay produced at our unique growing site. The Estate Reserve Chardonnay is aged in French White Oak barrels

for 10 months. The barrels used are a quarter new oak, which leaves the 2008 Chardonnay with a delicious balance of oak and vanilla flavors and a soft, creamy mouth feel. Democracy Vineyard is another new winery in Nelson County. Founded by Susan Prokop and Jim Turpin, Democracy offers four wines as well as some delicious apple wines. Velvet Revolution Reserve 2007 – The flagship of Democracy vineyards, features a blend of vitis vinifera and hybrid grapes. A “thick” wine, solid in structure with undercurrents of plums. In the northern Virginia, Linden continues to put out outstanding wines, including a crisp, citrusy and mineral driven Sauvignon Blanc, Avenius that is the equal to a good Sancerre ($22.99). Keswick Vineyards consistently produces excellent wines, including the rich, full and jammy Heritage, one of my favorite Virginia reds. The 2006 Heritage Estate Reserve, 2009 Governor’s Cup Gold Medal winner, is full of black fruit and cedar and a perfect for a crisp fall day. And after tasting through nearly all of King Family Vineyards, I can say there was not one wine that the class didn’t

love. A perfectly balanced Chardonnay, 2008, done in the French style with nuanced oak has notes of baked apple and toast, ($22.99); one of the best Cabernet Francs I have every tasted ($26.99) and rich and spicy Meritage, 2007 a blend of Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Dark fruits, especially black cherry, and raisins and prunes on the nose. Full in the mouth with cherry, smoke and clove. Any article on Virginia wine would be lacking without mentioning Luca Paschina of Barboursville Vineyard. The title of Michael Broadbent’s column in Decanter Magazine said it beautifully: “State’s evidence: Virginia 1, California 0.” The highest Virginia wine awards have gone to varying vintages of Barboursville Octagon wines, with the 1998 Octagon III Edition, a blend of 70% to 80% Merlot with Petiti Verdot and the Cabernets, warranted a four-star-plus rating. The Octagon 8th Edition, 2005 won the highest rating in red wines (93 pts.) at the World Wine Championship in Chicago. Well done Virginia. Kay Pfaltz is co-owner of Basic Necessities in Nellysford.

continued from page 10 “Unless you’re in Hawaii, you’re not growing coffee [in the U.S.],” Trager, co-owner of Trager Brothers Coffee roastery in Lovingston, said. Which is fine with him, because roasting and brewing coffee is where he and his brother Joe have built a reputation among an increasingly sophisticated coffeedrinking public that is demanding brews that are Fair Trade and environmentally polite. A Fair Trade certification says more of the money for the coffee is getting into the hands of the farmers and their communities, and not being eaten up by a multi-tiered system of distributors some coffee roasters rely on, Trager said. Trager Brothers also buys coffee that is certified by the Rainforest Alliance, which signals coffee grown with respect for the environment in places like Ethiopia where coffee is indigenous, Trager said. Trager coffees - a number fluctuating between 13 and 15 varieties - are also certified organic. “It’s a commitment to sustainability,” he said. “Coffee can work very, very well in an organic way.” The environmental and labor standard certifications Trager coffee bags carry adds money to the price customers pay, but he’s found, “People are willing to pay a couple of extra bucks to be socially responsible.” Trager learned roasting in Seattle more than 15 years ago as specialty coffee stores were taking off on the West Coast. He and brother Joe started selling coffee in the Corner-area of Charlottesville during the early 1990s when the area’s coffee huts and houses were fewer and farther between. Today, Trager Brothers coffee is sold in three Higher Grounds kiosks - which the brothers own - that are

poured throughout the University of Virginia’s medical complex. They also have a roastery that sits nearlyhidden in a garage behind a former boarding house that Billy Trager renovated and lives in. The roastery opened in 2007 and has so far created two jobs, with more expected in the coming years, he said. The Lovingston operation was supposed to be a place to roast coffee for selling throughout Virginia to everything from mom and pop shops to Whole Foods in Charlottesville. But people kept wandering up the driveway to the garage to buy brewed coffee, so Trager recently put in a counter that Janet and Doug Wellman frequent. “At Christmas time, Trager Brothers went all over the place,” Janet Wellman said. “We’re ambassadors,” Doug Wellman added. Other local Trager fans include Nicole Todd, president of the PTO at Temperance Elementary in Amherst County, and vice-president Cheryl Massie who are organizing a school fund raiser to sell Trager coffee. The pair said Temperance’s fund raisers this year are all centered on buying local. They already had a Virginia Diner peanut sale and are working on one to sell candles from Old Virginia Candle Company in Forest. “As local as we can get,” Massie said. Which fits with Trager’s creed that no matter the length of the trip the coffee bean made, it becomes local when he gets his hands on it. “If I can’t put it in my car and drive it [to the retailer], then I’m really not interested,” he said. continued from page 8 John and Jacob (no Jingleheimer Schmitt here, either, so don’t bother asking) both have musical backgrounds but didn’t meet up until a few years ago at Wintergreen’s open mic night. “I started opening up at mic night and [Jacob] would come up and play and we’d collaborate,” remembered John. “And we were terrible.” Fast forward two years and they’ve got an EP out with eight original songs and they’re leaving to go on tour this month. While the guys have both been into music for quite some time, their styles were majorly different. Jacob has been into classic rock and country. John was in a punk band. Mash those up and you get something completely different. Some people call it alternative country, but to HoBoJac, that doesn’t really pin down the genre. “We’re calling it angry folk music,” said Jacob. “Because it’s such a mix of John’s punk rock history, my bluegrass roots and the Americana craze.” “And it’s not even angry, it’s more pointed,” explained John. “The EP has some from the heart songs, but we do have a side that’s a little more pointed.” The EP only showcases eight of the nearly 30 songs in the band’s repertoire. John, 37, and Jacob, 28, each have four original songs on the new release. Most of the songs Jacob writes draw

on his past or his hopes for the future but end up being works of fiction. And most of them are from the heart – pretty deep stuff. But the album has some funny songs, too, he added. One of Jacob’s songs, “Uncle Joe,” is about his mom’s oldest brother, a Vietnam veteran who was killed in a car accident when Jacob was a teenager. The summer before he died, he started teaching Jacob how to play the guitar. Now Jacob, a long-time Nelsonian, plays the guitar and the mandolin for a real-live band. “And I have a habit of stomping around,” he added. “We both do vocals.” John, a fairly recent transplant from Chillicothe, Ohio, also plays the guitar and sometimes pitches in with some harp playing or other noise. Both guys hold a variety of jobs, but everything is going to put on hold starting Nov. 10 when HoBoJac leaves for its first-ever tour. They don’t have much of a plan yet – they’re sending out CDs and playing in towns where they have friends and family, but they’re definitely ready to get this show on the road – literally. “We’re just going to get in the van and drive,” said John. “We’re just going to basically go on a tour across America and find friends and say, ‘Hey! We’re here!’” NCL

MLS tips that can reach prospective buyers

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

Home selling tips are flooding the marketplace. When you Google home selling tips, you get more than one and a half million search results. That’s enough information to boggle anyone’s mind. If you are having trouble seeing the forest for the trees, step back and return to the basics. How can you create more exposure, in hopes of creating more demand for your home? It can be as simple as providing good information and it can start with the multiple listing service (MLS) which is recognized as the single most popular internet resource. According to the 2008 National Association of Realtors Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers, 60% of buyers utilize their local MLS as compared to 48% of buyers who use Realtor.com. In addition, it is where most of the internet marketing initiatives take root. If you are selling, it is important that you understand how to partner with your agent to get the most out of the MLS. Here are the basics:

Photos; photographs are powerful bait. Good ones can lure buyers; poor ones can turn them away. The Charlottesville MLS allows 50 pictures, yet many properties have only a few photos, while some have zero photos. (Buyers will completely pass over properties with no pictures.) Pictures should tell a story and invite the viewer to want to take the time to see more. As the seasons change, consider updating the photos. If you have favorite home photos share them with the agent. Remember a picture is worth a thousand words! Text Descriptions; don’t dismiss the power of a message, or the lack of a message, either. Incomplete or poorly written descriptions don’t entice a buyer. While there are character limitations, the text description should be eye catching and informative. It should address the major home features to attract the targeted buyer. If your house doesn’t sound attractive to you, why would it be to anyone else?

helpful such as utility data, floor plan, list of renovations, building specs, survey plat, etc… IDX inclusion; the MLS is where most of the marketing efforts begin. Many other websites will pull the MLS data to populate home searches on their websites. Even Realtor.com pulls the basic data from the MLS. Your home should be out there for the world to see, so inform your agent to include your home in the IDX, Internet Data eXchange. The MLS is a valuable tool if it is used to its fullest potential. Take an active role in supplying important documents and information to your listing agent. After reviewing the MLS listing, ask yourself, would you buy your home? Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson and besides being a Realtor, is a family business partner at Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery in Nellysford. Driving Directions; can potential buyers find your home? Be sure that your property is correctly mapped within the MLS. Improper mapping can result in missed opportunities. For example, if a buyer wants to live within a 5 mile radius of the high school, and your home was not properly mapped, it may not come up in the search. You might also be surprised by how many directions state to turn right when it should have been a left. Make it easy for a prospective buyer to locate your home! Room Dimensions; will the buyer’s be able to fit their king size bed in the master bedroom? Will the dining room accommodate a table for eight? Provide room dimension in the MLS and/or provide the actual floor plan for buyer reference. Other Documents; While buyers may not be able to access attached documents, their agents can. Have your agent scan into the MLS any information that a buyer could find

Growing up, everyone tells you to do what you like to do; to “go with your passion.” It took Marilyn Scott a few years to do it, but she’s finally there. “I love to knit,” she said. “It’s my absolute passion. I’ve done other things in my life, but this is my passion.” For 25 years, Marilyn was a naturopathic doctor, but she hasn’t stopped knitting since she learned

people want to make gifts for friends and relatives to save money. They are staying home more and want something to do other than watch TV. “I keep my prices low deliberately,” said Marilyn. “What I’m doing here is to afford a craft for everybody in this area because this is the only place in the Nelson County area where you can come and get yarn, where you can come and learn to knit, learn to bead, learn to crochet.”

Or I bead,” she said. “And I teach all three.” A lot of people think of knitting and crocheting as something grandma used to do, but the craft is really coming back. “It’s resurging,” said Marilyn. “It was a lost art for a long time and it’s coming back, especially the way the economy is right now.” That’s why her new yarn shop near Lovingston, The Yarn Boutique, is booming. Marilyn said that

She said that while knitting is fun and a great way to release stress after a long day, one of the best things about knitting is its portability. Marilyn tried painting once, but like most hobbies and crafts, painting doesn’t move very well. Knitting on the other hand, can go pretty much anywhere. Plus, said Marilyn, it helps with dieting. “When you’re knitting,” she said, smiling, “you’re not eating!” NCL Marilyn Scott teaches a two-hour class for only $10. Getting heated:

A practice in patience STORY by AARON LEE PHOTOGRAPHY by CHET WHITE

A violent motorcycle crash slammed the brakes on Kevin Crowe’s life during the mid-1970s. But as he healed, Crowe would sit in on a pottery class his wife Linda was taking at the time. “I was an English major,” Crowe, a College of William & Mary graduate, said. “Never took an art class.” By the time he was out of the plaster and back on his feet, he’d been grabbed by the meticulous, relaxed pace that working with clay demands.

Noah Hughey-Commers, an apprentice of renowned potter Kevin Crowe, will be showcasing his work at Tye River Pottery’s winter studio sale. For dates and details, visit NelsonCountyLife.com

NOVEMBER 2009 NELSON COUNTY LIFE 27

“The process has a built in rhythm that you can’t hurry up ... you can’t fast forward this,” he said. And this month, for the 27th straight year, he’ll stoke the kiln that sits adjacent his Tye River Pottery studio and fire away toward the show and sale that will include pieces by Crowe’s apprentice and a showcase of work by a local fashion designer. On the fire side, the entire process will take a month, three tons of clay and seven cords of wood whose ash will burn hot enough to melt a glazing onto much of the work. Throughout the month, Crowe’s studio will crackle, if past firings are an indicator, with family, friends and visitors from Virginia and several of the states that stick to it.

28 NELSON COUNTY LIFE NOVEMBER 2009

The majority of work being packed into the kiln are pieces by Crowe and that of his apprentice, Nelson-native Noah HugheyCommers. Hughey-Commers graduated from Mary Washington University in 2008 and returned to the county to look for work and feel out the next step in his life. “I really wanted to come home and work with my hands,” Hughey-Commers, an English major, said. So, he spent several weeks working with Crowe - a lifelong family friend - before they agreed on the internship.

OCTOBER 2009 NELSON COUNTY LIFE 29

“It was the most natural thing in the world,” said the 24-year-old Hughey-Commers, who grew up attending Crowe’s bi-annual firings. “It was just too much fun [at Crowe’s studio] and not as much fun looking for a job.” To pay the bills, he hones his carpentry skills working with his father, a cabinet maker. Hughey-Commers recently signed on to extend his apprenticeship through the spring firing. From there he plans to travel to Europe to study with other potters. His interest lies in creating pieces that don’t sacrifice function for the sake of form. “Pottery really is at its most beautiful when it’s being used,” he said recently as he sipped Earl Grey from a cup he made. Crowe said apprentices always mimic the style of their teacher at first, but that he can see Hughey-Commers work developing its own personality. “The first thing that he has is a passion for [working with clay],” Crowe said. “It’s such an irrational occupation, so that’s important.” Seemingly, just as irrational will be the pairing of Hughey-Commers’s and Crowe’s work with the stylings of Davis Creek-native Rose Valentino.

30 NELSON COUNTY LIFE NOVEMBER 2009

Rose Valentino of Davis Creek will be showcasing her custom kimono jackets and jewelry at the winter studio sale at Tye River Pottery.

Although Crowe sees the connection. “I think it’s helpful for people to see different aesthetics and mediums together,” he said. Valentino, 31, a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University, has spent the last 10 years evolving a style that respects the intricate hand craft - that isn’t always visible - behind a wellmade garment, while pushing for a unique look. It’s almost an overload to appreciate how much of daily life is upholstered by fabric, she said. “You sit on it, you wear it, you wipe your hands on it,” she said. While she’s done a share of bridal work, more and more she’s finding inspiration in thrift stores, where she looks for ways to reuse and re-purpose garments and fabrics that have run their course in other people’s lives. She’ll be creating new pieces for the show with Hughey-Commers and Crowe. She’s thinking kimonos might make a good fit. “I say it’s for the fashionably fearless,” Valentino said of her work, which in the past has incorporated her metalworking skills. “I just don’t want to go out and see someone wearing what I’m wearing.” NCL

sam’sgarden By Sam Saunders Saunders Landscapes, LLC

A Formal Garden The addition of a formal garden to any design can be a very powerful statement in the landscape when designed properly. Hard edges, strong straight lines and the box-like nature all control how the eye moves in and around the garden. It also sets the garden up for some excellent focal points for that statuary that maybe just don’t seem to really have a place in your garden. Choosing the right site is perhaps the greatest challenge since a formal garden merits a perfect delivery just like a punch line to a joke. Perhaps the easiest location would be close to your home or structure where strong lines are already prevalent. A house that has a wing naturally has points that can be joined with a low fence or hedge that create the square or rectangle that is needed. It also can be very natural in an open area near a property border or even near a straight wall - the key is that something has to at least break the ebb and flow of your current mulch to a more linear style. Once you have chosen your site and have your four corners, choose a ‘backbone’ for the garden such as a fence, a hedge or a low wall. This ‘backbone’ will be the single strongest element in your formal garden so choose carefully. Hedges can be formed with a number of shrubs with the key being evergreen and the ability to hold a strong edge even in the winter solstice. The primary purpose of the ‘backbone’ is to give your formal area its own room – whether tall or short, the addition of a line of evergreens, a fence or wall will make this statement quite adequately. Once you have your backbone defined, you have the luxury of either having multiple entry points. Think long and hard about this since the

entry controls how your garden is both visited and viewed. When the garden shares 2 of its borders with a structure, it may be best to only have 1 point of entry; when all four corners are defined by you on site, then you must choose how many entry points you will have. Keep in mind that less is sometimes more powerful since your formal garden will have more of a feeling of isolation and quaintness when you must enter and leave through just 1 or 2 entry points. For a small garden the bed layout is typically 4 triangles with one central area that is circular. Layout the triangles first by simply connecting each corner to its 45 degree opposite cousin. Now increase the width of this line 1 ½ feet on both sides to create a angular path. Now, after you have defined your triangles and paths, place a nail where these 4 triangles meet. With a tape measure, make a circle using the nail as the radius and 4 ½ feet as the outer extremities of the area (area A). Now from the same point, do a new circle that is just 1 ½ feet in radius (area B). You now have the innermost region, the focal point (which will be mulched), and a path of 3 feet (same as the triangle from above) in width around the focal point (Area A minus Area B). Obviously these numbers can be modified based on your own landscape. Place your statuary in one or two of the 4 corners that are not exits and the birdbath in the center area. When adding your plant material, try to follow suit from one area to the next or, at least have two of the same side areas identical. Whatever you do, the center area is all the same. Think formal, not circus when you add in the fillers‌ Until our next article, Happy Gardening!

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, I was recently bitten by a stray dog. The wound looks OK, but should I do anything about it. Animal bites are quite common and can be a challenge to manage. Some bites are mild and only result in bruising. Others are severe and result in horrible open wounds that need surgery. Most bites should be examined by your physician to determine if antibiotics are needed and to update your tetanus shot. Most animal bites come from pets, especially dogs. Cat bites, however, are more likely to become infected because of longer teeth that cause puncture wounds. Wild animals bite many people each year – I have even seen a person with a turtle bite! Any wound that breaks the skin is at risk of becoming infected. Wounds that are on the hands or fingers can become very seriously infected and should be evaluated right away. Rabies can be spread through the saliva of an infected animal. Any animal that is acting strange should be considered suspicious for rabies. Do not go near the animal but notify

your local animal control. Once rabies has developed there is no cure. If you may have been exposed to a rabid animal seek medical care immediately. A rabies vaccine should be given to protect you from developing rabies infection. Be sure to have your pets vaccinated against rabies. Bats are particularly concerning for rabies. There are some who recommend rabies vaccines after any potential contact with a bat, even just seeing one in your house! If you are the victim of an animal bite stay calm and get to a safe place to prevent further bites. If the wound is bleeding, apply pressure to stop the bleeding. If the wound is not severe, clean it with soap and warm water. If you have been bitten on your face or hands, or if the wound is large, get medical attention right away.

The Holiday Challenge As we march into the Holiday Season, we dig into the closet and pull out the pants with the loose waist bands. Pre- season training gear: expandable pants. A huge Thanksgiving feast starts off the seasonal holiday parties and dinners. Generally, from Thanksgiving to the New Year- we place exercise and anything sensible concerning nutrition, sleep and stress on the backburner. The thought is “I’ll start up again in the New Year.” So, no matter how conscientious about exercise and nutrition we have been throughout the year- we’ll lose it all in 5 weeks. Wouldn’t it be easier just to keep up some of the routine or start now so you’ll be in less discomfort on January 1, 2010? I propose the Holiday Challenge. Begin this week. Here is the recommended training frequency according to skill level by Dr. Adam Goode of Duke University. Beginner exercisers: exercise 2-3 times per week. Intermediate exercisers: 3-4 times per week. Advanced exercisers: 5-7 days

per week. I recommend Beginners start with walking. Time yourself and each session, try to walk longer. Record it and watch your progress. If there is a barrier that prevents you from exercising, consult a health professional for an evaluation and specific guidelines for a program designed to meet your needs. For those who are already exercising, there are parameters that would help you gain more from your program. To strengthen the muscles, there has to be a load increase of either 1) more weight 2) more repetitions or 3) more exercise sessions. And, the body responds well to variability- changes in your exercise program. Exercise in a different manner. Add a group exercise class to your routine. And, alter your intensity- challenge yourself! If you do the same program all the time, your muscles have accommodated to that and you will not see progress. These recommendations are given with caution to those who have an existing medical history that includes heart disease, arthritis, diabetes,

Nellysford sculptor Charles Flickinger’s latest piece is made of old farm equipment salvaged from Elk Hill. The piece was commissioned for the fall wedding of Peter Agelasto, Jr. to Sarah Pope of Beech Grove. “We wanted something wedding-related so I was going to do this rusty bride, Flickinger explained. But one thing led to another and the rusty bride turned into Persephone, the Greek goddess of the Underworld, and the daughter of Demeter, goddess of the harvest.

38 NELSON COUNTY LIFE NOVEMBER 2009

in focus: The birds of Wintergreen STORY by JENNIE TAL Dr. Marshall Faintich got his very first camera when he was six years old. He took his love of photography into his career pioneering early digital image processing and software for aerial and satellite imagery, but could never get behind the lens as often as he liked. That all changed a few years ago. “I had always wanted to do wildlife photography, but did not have the time or good access to wildlife until moving to Wintergreen in 2006,” said Marshall, who is retired but occasionally teaches a short course on digital photography. “One of my sons gave me a bird feeder for my yard, and when different species of birds started appearing at the feeder, I grabbed my camera and became hooked.” Even though taking pictures of wildlife can be frustrating, Marshall finds it worth the effort. “Photographing wildlife is not easy, but very rewarding,” he said. “Quite often the photographer has very little time to compose and capture a subject with a camera.” He said that while digital photography and new photo-editing software have made the job a little easier, it still takes a lot of practice – he takes at least 1,000 pictures before he feels completely comfortable.

PUBLICITY

Marshall’s new 336-page tabletop photographic guide to birds in Wintergreen draws from more than 60,000 photos he’s taken since moving to Wintergreen, which he defines as the Rockfish River Valley and surrounding mountains here in Nelson County. Marshall, the official photographer and senior birding editor for the Rockfish Valley Trail, explained that reliable birders have documented more than 200 species of birds in and around. In the 9x12-inch book, he shares a photograph of most of the species and tells the reader where to find them. – the first of its kind. NCL Meet Marshall Faintich at an illustrated lecture at a public meeting of the Nelson County Garden CLub Nov. 6 at 2pm, at the CVEC building in Arrington.

PETS Siberian Husky We bought Torch for our daughter from the Savannah Kennels in N.C. a little over a year ago. He has beautiful blue eyes and red, brown and black markings. My daughter is too busy with school and work to continue training him. He has had basic dog training but needs more which I cannot do. He loves to play but all our other dogs are just to old for him!! He needs someone who has a lot of time and love. He is fixed and up to date with all of his shots.
