Who knew choosing a coop design would be like selecting a floor plan for a new house? It’s only a matter of time before we start seeing coops that are passive solar, geodesic, post-andbeam, and – the coop for the masses – the prefabricated modular!

There’s actually something to be said about prefab homes. I own a reprint of the Sears, Roebuck 1926 House Catalog and I must admit, I have fallen in love with the Avalon priced at $2530.00. If I want storm doors and windows, I’ll have to fork over an extra $79. And, should I choose to order a Simplex Portable Out House (4 ft. square), that would cost me an additional $41. But I don’t see any chicken coop designs in this catalog which is a bit of a disappointment.

Tommy says he doesn’t quite remember what his coops looked like when he was a kid aside from the fact the chickens may have roosted in an old tractor shed. Well, our house did not come with an old tractor shed.

It will be interesting to see how the dogs and cat will interact with a chicken population. I’m more confident we can keep the dogs out but I have a feeling Angelo may be the

most threatening predator. We’ll see.

These days Angelo and Adam are bonding quite well. Petting the kitty has become part of Adam’s morning routine and, especially after a night of prowling, Angelo tends to be quite tame and enjoys the whisker pulling in the mornings.

You may have noticed Adam’s hair is beginning to lay flat. With his baby Mohawk just about gone, Adam is beginning to look more like a little boy.

Or a chicken farmer.

Italy My first job in Paris, at the age of twenty-four, was as the cultural coordinator for the American Institute for Foreign Study. That meant if I wanted to go to the ballet at the Paris opera house, I organized an outing and took the students. And if I wanted to buy Christmas presents for family and friends—shoes and gloves at Florence’s San Lorenzo market or 18 karat gold at Vanni’s on the Ponte Vecchio or eat gelato at Vivolis, why I’d just plan a trip in November and take the students.

It was a challenging job.

My passion for red wine was already in full swing even at twenty-four, so much so that my beloved students would serenade me with choruses of “Red, red wine/Makes me feel fine.” Having taken Steven Spurrier’s L’Academie du Vin at nineteen, I’d already had years of studying French wine, but back then, Italy was my favorite country and Florence my favorite city. Twenty-five years ago, however, Italian wines were not what they are today.

Today Italy, not only the world’s largest wine producing country, but also, wine consuming country, offers some

of the most interesting regional grapes and wines. If the economy doesn’t allow a trip to Tuscany or Umbria this year, come celebrate Italy and all its sensual glories at Basic Necessities.

Tormaresca, Neprica 2007 – From Pulgia, the heel of the boot, “Neprica” stands for negroamara, primitive and cabernet sauvignon, the grapes that make up this wine. Dark fruit flavors enhanced by echoes of spice. Hard to fine better value than this, $12.99.

Allegrini Palazzo della Torre 2005 – From the Veneto, this wine whose name means “palace with a tower” is made in the ripasso style where 30% of the grapes are laid out to dry till December. The blend of Corvina, Veronese, Rondinella and Sangiovese is dense, elegant, pruney or raisony, reminiscent of Amarone. Sumptuous aromas of currant, blackberry and licorice; full-bodied and rich it is a classic accompaniment to roasted meats.

Selected by Wine Spectator as one of the top 100 wines of the world for fives years in a row, from 2000-2005. While it tastes like a $40 or $50 bottle, this is a stunning bargain at $24.99.

Rocca della Macie Sassyr, 2006 – Another acronym the name “Sassyr”

is derived from the two grape varietals, Sangiovese and Syrah. From the Maremma coastal district of southeastern Tuscany, Sassyr is a luscious, fruit-drive blend, with intense red fruit aromas of ripe cherry, blackberry and raspberry. $16.99.

Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio (red and white) – As well as loving time in Florence as a youngster, I also fell in love with Campania and Calabria, driving down from Paris in a Citroën 2CV to Sorrento. I would stay in the Hotel Bellevue Syrene, sip Lacryma Christi on the balcony, gaze out to Mount Vesuvius and Capri and feel very erudite reading Graham Greene or Somerset Maugham stories, in particular “The Lotus Eater.” Lacryma Christi is one of the local wines of choice in Campania and seduces many with the name alone, Tears of Christ. The legend is that when Lucifer fell from Heaven, Christ cried his tears over the land and gave divine inspiration to the vines. It’s Easter weekend but the kids aren’t hunting for eggs. They’re hunting for a spot. That perfect place in between the sky and the field where wind and chance collide to lift up a kite.

It’s been years since Barbara Wood of Churchville has run figure eights in a field. She’s with her granddaughter, Phoebe, who scored a free kite at the Rockfish Valley Kite Flying Festival.

A wonderful day not because of the weather, which festival organizer Peter Agelasto says has

been unpredictable. “I don’t think it’s snowed today, but it’s done everything else!”

The “wonderful” part of Barbara’s day has more to do with the fact that unlike iPods and Bluetooth, kite flying spans generations. And it’s like riding a bike. If you haven’t done it, it’s only a matter of time.

The kids seem to want to take a kite and run with it. Their elders are there to teach them technique.

Richard Averitt of Nellysford went to college in Savannah, Georgia and spent a lot of time on the beach. And where you have beaches, you have

winds, and where you have winds, you have kites.

His is called a cherry bomb.

“It’s pretty easy to fly. It doesn’t need a lot of wind. And it can take a lot of crashes, which is why we have it.”

“We” is his son, Quinn and niece, Sophie, who are just starting to get the hang of it.

“It mostly just takes, like anything, it takes a few minutes of getting a feel for how it works. Everybody wants to pull harder than you need to and that makes the kite fly really erratic and crash. So you have to learn that it’s really kind of a gentle give and take to control it.”

Sponsored by the Rockfish Valley Foundation, the Rockfish Valley Kite Flying Festival attracted dozens of kite fliers throughout the day to Spruce Creek Park. Richmond Air Force, a professional kite flying group, offered demonstrations and competitions, with some performances done to music. 2 Guys Flying from Staunton gave out free kites to the first 100 children.

Katerina Martin’s rainbow-colored kite seems to be cooperating. Her father would be with her but he’s a soldier, and these days they get deployed. This is month 10.

“I just like seeing all the pretty colors in the kites,” Katerina says. Stacey, her mother, says she’s in town to spend Easter with her in-laws. Her mother-in-law’s boyfriend is flying a big red, white and blue kite.

“I used to fly kites as a kid,” Stacey says, remarking on her daughter’s skills. “She’s actually done a pretty good job with flying her kites today.”

So has Cassandra Moxley, age 6. To make her kite

flight worthy, she took a handful of crayons and drew birds all over it. “A cat chased it up and got it,” she explains, pointing to the her drawing. Not much for words, Cassandra senses a shift in the wind and runs off.

“It’s another great excuse to be outside on a pretty day,” Richard says, watching Quinn prepare the kite for another flight. “My son’s really excited by this kite because it makes a loud noise and flies fast when it works, you know?”

Tax incentive for first-time home buyers

If you have been house shopping, but hesitant to follow through with the actual purchase, this may be your golden opportunity to commit and cash-in on some huge home purchase savings. Home prices have dropped, interest rates are low, and the federal government is offering a significant tax incentive for first-time home buyers. In 2008, Congress enacted a $7,500 tax credit. In February of 2009, as part of the sweeping economic stimulus package, the program was revised and improved. The 2009 tax credit has been increased to an amount up to $8,000 and it doesn’t have to be repaid. Read more to see how the tax credit has been modified and to see if you qualify to save money by making a home purchase.

Amount of credit; In 2008: The tax credit worth 10% of the purchase price of the home, with a maximum credit of $7,500. In 2009: The maximum credit amount increased to $8,000.

Home purchase period; In 2008: Purchases on or after April 9, 2008 and before January 1, 2009. In 2009: Effective for purchases on or after January 1, 2009 and before December 1, 2009.

Eligibility; In 2008: Eligibility is extended to a “first-time home buyer” and is defined as someone who has not owned a primary residence during the three-year period prior to the qualifying purchase. In 2009: No change. The three year rule continues to apply.

Eligible property; In 2008: Any single family residence (including condos, co-ops, townhouses and other) that will be used as a principal residence. In 2009: No change. All principle residences are eligible.

Refundable; In 2008: Yes. The home purchase reduces or eliminates income tax liability for the year of purchase. Any unused amount of tax credit is refunded to purchaser.

A few snowflakes may have stopped some gardeners in early April, but it didn’t stop the Wintergreen Nature Foundation.

“I thought it would be so warm that we could be out here in our summer clothing,” said Olivia Ellis, a member of the Nature Foundation’s Propagation Team. “We had no idea it was going to be snowing.”

Olivia, a few other members of the Nature Foundation and several students at Rockfish River Elementary School gathered early spring to start their brand new butterfly garden.

Olivia said she loves gardening with kids, but it was the students who decided that they wanted to attract butterflies.

“The kids wanted to do a butterfly garden and they wanted to plant native wildflowers and see what the relationship was between the plants and butterflies,” she said.

When she shared the idea with Jean Bertelsen, the head of the Propagation Team, Jean was excited, too. She knew the team already propagated a few plants that have nectars loved by butterflies, and she offered them up to the children’s garden.

All the plants grow locally and were collected and nurtured by the Propagation Team.

“They’re all plants that are native to our particular area,” explained Jean.

Of the many options, Olivia chose a variety of plants that will bloom at various times throughout the summer, starting in June. Once the weather gets warmer, visitors will see butterfly weed, great lobelia and other milkweeds – all plants adored by butterflies.

Once upon a time, if you wanted to make a salad, you’d walk outside, pick some lettuce and tomatoes and walk back into your home to toss it.

Then, with the inventions of supermarkets and subdivisions, farming became a thing of the past.

Your lettuce could come from a greenhouse in New Hampshire and the tomatoes were trucked up from Fort Lauderdale.

Farming never completely vanished, though, especially in rural places like Nelson County. And now, with buying local and going green becoming more and more popular, the idea of the farmers market is back with a bang.

There have been several farmers markets in and around Nelson County for years, but as the popularity of “growing your own” grows even more, additional markets are popping up closer to home.

Buck Whitehurst and Stuart and Mary Ann Gunter, for example, along with about a dozen others will celebrate the opening of a small market – the Schuyler Community Farmers Market - May 9. They’re launching with about 10 vendors selling everything from hot peppers and cheesecake to Adirondack chairs and alpaca products.

“Buy local,” encouraged Buck. “You know, just makes more sense to support your neighbors.”

Yea, they all like locally grown food, but Stuart said that’s not really the main focus of the market.

“If we don’t sell one collard green or one boutique shirt, the whole point is to have a place where people can come on a Saturday morning and have a cup of coffee with their neighbors,” he said. “You don’t have to go to Charlottesville, you don’t have to go to Scottsville or Nellysford; you can get out of bed and walk down the road to Schuyler.”

Fellow Nelsonian Jessie Carter has been growing her own food for quite some time now. She said that her small family always had a little extra, but never enough to justify going to a farmers market to sell it.

Her solution? A new project called Locally Grown Nelson which is both very similar and very different from the Schuyler Community Market.

It’s old school – everything sold through Locally Grown Nelson will be home grown or homemade – meets new school – the purchasing is managed online at www.nelson.locallygrown.net.

“So I figured this would be a great way to do it,” she said.

Jessie, who has a degree in ecology and has been farming since high school, was introduced to the Locally Grown software through a friend and thought the program was perfect for Nelson.

Shoppers place orders from the web site, which has about 25 vendors selling everything from meat and eggs to cookies and crafts, between Saturday night and Monday. Then, on Wednesdays, they come on down to the Rockfish Valley Community Center to pay for and pick up the order.

Jessie knows that many stores are picking up locally grown produce nowadays, too, but because Locally Grown Nelson only charges an 8 percent commission, she thinks the things sold on the web site might be more affordable.

“I think that this helps because I think most people want to eat locally but a lot of times it’s more expensive,” she said. “But pretty much we have farm prices.”

So whether you’re looking for a community close to home or just something locally grown, just remember, Nelson’s definitely got it for you. NCL

Giles’ Market. Mac’s Market. That little country grocery store out in Roseland. However you know it, the market is back and it’s now – after almost 60 years of operation - officially Mac’s Country Store.

More than half a century ago, Mac Giles owned and operated the store when it was part grocery, part gas station and part TV repair shop. It was called Giles’ Market.

Then, in 1985, Eddie Seaman bought the store.

“He [Mac] and I talked about it years and years ago,” remembered Eddie. “And he called me one day and he said, ‘You were the first person to ask me about it and if you’re still interested, I’ll sell it to you.’ So that’s how I ended up buying it.”

Eddie took out the gas tanks and the TV repair business, added a deli box and a walk-in cooler, kept the convenience store and called it Mac’s Market. Together with his daughter Susie, Eddie ran that store plus Campbell’s Grocery near Piney River.

And this next paragraph will prove to you that who you know around here matters: Donny Campbell’s parents used to run Campbell’s Grocery. He and his then-wife Elizabeth, a

cousin of Susie’s, wanted nothing more than to run a country store. So after Campbell’s Grocery closed its doors and it came time to sell Mac’s Market in 2004, it made perfect sense to hand operations over to the Campbells.

“And I just fell in love with it when I first saw it,” said Elizabeth. “The people here, the customers made me feel so much at home.”

Recently closed for a few months before being purchased by Betty Brown, the store is now called Mac’s Country Store.

But have no fear, Elizabeth is still behind the counter cooking up the market’s famous fried chicken.

“They’re going to say that Mac’s is known for the chicken,” said Elizabeth, who admitted she’s more of a cheeseburger kind of gal. “And I have never been a fried chicken person, but I have compared to everywhere and I think our chicken is very good. I know there are other people who use the same ingredients that I do and they still tell me that the chicken tastes better here.”

The menu might be changing a little, as will the face of the market, but the feel will be the same.

Betty is already working on putting in gas tanks that will be open 24/7 as well as expanding the restaurant a bit.

She’s removed about half of the grocery shelves, too.

“I’m not trying to be a grocery store,” she said.

“I thought if they need groceries, they can go down to J&K or Lovingston.”

But that doesn’t mean Mac’s won’t have what you need. Betty keeps a list that customers can add to if anything they want is missing from the store.

Eddie never intended for the store to be a fullout grocery store, either.

“Everybody goes to the big stores and everything, but you always forget something,” he mused.

And really, it’s not always the convenience that brings people in to Mac’s. It’s the company.

Elizabeth says the customers are “just a big family” and Betty said she’s already sensing that.

Eddie, who still comes in for a bite to eat every once and again, knows that Mac’s is the place to be.

“At 12 o’clock, you can hear some of the funniest stories back at those tables,” he said. “It’s really nice.” NCL

The first problem the group tackled was trash management.

“This is a resort up here so you get all different entities come in here,” said Tom, who once had a standoff with a mama bear and her two cubs on his screened-in back porch. “There’s the big trash problem up here because it is a resort with a golf course and things like that. There’s a lot of open trash sites.”

Now, in addition to working with WPOA to put up signs warning of the dangers of bears, Bear Smart is encouraging people to stop feeding the birds during the warmer moths – between April 1 and Dec. 1, which is recommended by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

It’s not officially prohibited, but aside from insecure trash, bird feeders are the biggest attraction for bears to come near homes.

“The smell of the bird feed and the mess on the ground, it creates an attractant for the bear,” said Sarah recently to a woman who wanted to maintain her bird feeders. “And once the bears come to your home and they find that, they’re going to start going to other homes looking for the same thing.”

And like a poster in the post office says, “Friends don’t let friends feed the bears.” NCL

In 2008, bears broke in to 35 houses in the Commonwealth. Of those 35 houses, 31 of them were here at Wintergreen Resort.

Enough is enough and a few Wintergreen residents have decided to take a stand against the bears.

Not that they want to hurt the furry burglars.

“Actually,” explained Sarah Scott, one of the founders of “a conservation effort [aimed] at educating humans to make an environmentally safe community for humans and for bears.”

Sarah’s house that she shares with her husband Bob has been broken into several times, even though they now follow the rules – no feeding the birds, keeping the trash locked up.

“They’ve just gotten so used to going into homes,” she said.

The Scotts, along with fellow Wintergreen residents Tom and Barbara Marker, have formed Bear Smart, a program to educate the community about bear safety that the Scotts learned about during a trip to Vancouver.

Tools of the Trade Each and every craftsman has specific tools for specific jobs. These ‘tools of the trade’ make the difference between half baked and well done. Here is a short list of tools that every gardener must not only have but also maintain in a way so that they are in excellent condition for when that specific task arises.

Pruning shears are always at the top of the list. First and foremost is to understand that not all pruning shears are made alike. The professionals always use Felco. The reason is simple – reliability and clean cuts. A poor cut is not only a better entry wound for a disease, but also aesthetically it leaves a terrible scar. Yes these pruners will be more expensive but they will last a lifetime if oiled, sharpened and cleaned regularly. Oiling is infrequent – maybe only 2 times a year and cleaning usually involves just rubbing alcohol and a good piece of steel wool.

A good gardener needs about three types of pruning shears. Yes three.

Your most frequently used pruners will be a small pair (no lnger than 8 inches) of hand shears for cutting

perennials and small woody branches. The second should be a larger pair of shears for pruning hedges, bushes and cleaning up perennials in the fall. These should be around 18 inches to 2 feet in length and usually have a cutting surface of around 10 inches. The last pair are the lopers and these are used for larger branches on trees. You do not want they style that cuts through the branch in one swipe (harder to use and to make a clean cut), but the style that requires you to close three or four times, each time ratcheting down more and more on the selected branch until it is cut.

These are around 3 feet in length.

A round point shovel, usually around 5 feet in length, is for planting and turning new soil in a new area for landscaping. A spade or square point shovel is used for cutting sod, edging and transplanting shrubs around your landscape. They typically have a longer face so that you can go deeper into the soil when you dig around a plant for transplanting. The spade needs to be regularly sharpened so that the point is a sharp edge so that it cuts the root system cleanly.

One last hand tool that we use

often is a nice mattock with a wide point on one side (usually around 3 inches wide) and a sharp point on the other. This tool will save you time and money when planting in soil that is either hard, if you did not first prep the bed, or if your soil is laden with stone and roots.

A small tiller, like a Mantis, is an aggressive, lightweight tiller that will blend all the layers of the amendments that you would add to your existing soil once you have already spaded and turned the native soil

over for maximum root growth. The Mantis also works very nicely in close situations where your large tiller cannot go and has a number of attachments ranging from thatchers to edging blades. One note on Mantis tillers: unlike a full-sized tiller, a Mantis works most effectively if you let it run a couple of inches and then pull it back to you through the soil thereby chewing up the soil to a dust like consistency.

Time to Boost Your College Savings?

In an uncertain economy, it’s natural for people to “tighten their belts” by cutting down on their spending.

And yet by having too much cash on hand today, you could actually slow your progress toward your financial goals of tomorrow.

Before we get to the possible pitfalls of hoarding cash, let’s consider your fellow Americans’ recent savings habits: • How much? In the last quarter of 2008, the personal savings rate was 2.9 percent, the highest level since the third quarter of 2001, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce.

• Where? People are putting their money in what they consider safe vehicles. At the end of 2008, the ratio of money market fund assets and bank savings deposits to stocks — as measured by the Wilshire 5000 Index, one of the broadest market indices designed to track the overall performance of the US stock market — was 95.4 percent, according to Ned Davis Research. (Keep in mind that the Wilshire 5000 index

is unmanaged and not available for direct investment.) This ratio is the highest it’s been since money market accounts were created in the early 1980s.

Of course, given the stock market decline, it’s not surprising that so much money is going into these accounts, because people are looking, above all else, to preserve their principal. Consequently, as a nation, we are now sitting on a “mountain” of cash.

However, the trip up this mountain does not come free. While it’s true that these vehicles may help preserve your principal, they may not provide you with returns that can keep up with inflation, which means that the more of these instruments you own, and the longer you own them, the greater the likelihood that you will lose purchasing power.

So here’s the situation: On the one hand, you have a tough economy and a stock market that has probably already saddled you with losses. On the other hand, you need to consider investing in stocks or other growth-

oriented investments to help you reach your long-term goals. What’s the solution? Balance. There’s probably a place in your portfolio for short-term instruments whose chief benefit is helping to preserve your principal. But you may need to balance these holdings with investments that can potentially reward you with growth. The exact mix of assets depends on your risk tolerance, time horizon and individual goals.

In these days, you may need a leap of faith to invest some of your cash.

But history is on your side: Downturns have typically been followed by market rallies. Plus, we may eventually see cash seeking higher returns, and that should have a positive impact on the financial markets.

It may feel comforting to have a lot of cash on hand. But if you’re planning for the years ahead, you should consider putting some of that cash to work.

By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, I can’t afford to smoke any more because of the increased price of cigarettes. But I can’t quit without help.

This is a complaint I have heard many times in the last few weeks - it is ironic that people complain to their physician about the price of cigarettes!

The recent dramatic increase in cigarette prices, combined with the current recession has a lot of people considering giving up their habit. But it is not an easy thing to do. The addiction to nicotine is very powerful. The behavioral habit of smoking is also very hard to break, sometimes even harder than the addiction to nicotine.

Some people can simply decide to quit, put down the cigarettes and walk away. Most cannot, however.

Nicotine replacement products can be a big help in dealing with the nicotine cravings. Medications that help with the desire to smoke can also be very helpful. Some people have used hypnosis, or acupuncture, in order to quit.

I frequently have people tell me that they smoke because of stress.

In order to successfully quit, other ways of dealing with stress must be found. Smoking is often associated

Understanding these associations help address the behavioral aspect of smoking.

The biggest factor in successfully changing any behavior is motivation. For many the motivation to quit smoking is financial – and at well over $5 per pack this can be quite powerful. For others it is health related. It doesn’t really matter what motivates you, but understanding your reasons for quitting will allow you to stay focused on your goal.

So what to do? Get motivated.

Come up with a plan and set a quit date. Start an exercise routine to combat the weight gain that often comes with quitting smoking. Be sure to make healthy food choices. If you feel you need a medication to help then talk to your physician. And if you don’t succeed the first time, then try again. You can do it!

Our Teetering Gait Many of us have had our trips and falls. Falls become more common as we age and more than one third of older adults fall each year. However, the statistics are staggering. According to the Journal of Internal Medicine, every hour, there is one death and 183 emergency room visits for falls related injuries among senior citizens. There are also other detrimental outcomes such as head trauma and hip fractures.

Following a fall, an older adult’s confidence is usually shattered and this leads to a more sedentary lifestyle for individuals which results in more health issues such as weakness, lower endurance and poor mobility as he or she may be afraid to move from the chair or home. It is a downward spiral.

Most of us who may be caring for aging loved ones, have witnessed some of this.

There are many facets to good balance. Your gender, age, strength, flexibility, vision and current medications play an integral role in your safe mobility. Some things can be changed and other aspects cannot. Current re-

search has shown that working on the specific balance exercises, strength, gait and flexibility can reduce your risk for a fall.

It is vital to your balance and health to have regular physicals, regular eye and ear exams and a regular review of your medications by your physician. It is important for you and or your family members to communicate to your physician about your current functional level. For example, are you having trouble getting out of a chair?

Are you having trouble walking from the car to the house? Are you staying home more? Can you get out of bed by yourself? All these are signs of a decline in function which can actually lead to more falls.

One of the most fascinating aspects of working in healthcare and fitness is the amazing ability of the body to adapt and improve whatever the starting level may be for the older adult.

So, if you are having some concerns about your balance and walking, there is a good chance you can improve your balance and reduce your risk for falls.

Nelson County Folk Life Festival

Two years after its inception, the Nelson County Folk Life Festival at Pharsalia is back for another weekend – May 30 and 31 – of celebrating history and heritage on the pre Civil War-era plantation.

The last festival was in April 2007 and was a great success.

“We did a little survey after the last event and we got some very favorable comments on it,” said Bob Greer, one of the festival’s organizers. “The basic comment they made was, ‘Don’t change a thing, it was great the way it was!’”

But Bob said there were a few suggestions on how the festival could improve and he and other organizers are working hard to make those changes for the better enjoyment of attendees.

Changes to expect this year include a water truck to limit the dust, a greater variety of even better food, entertainment in the shade and a large tent full of places to sit and eat. Plus the organizers are hoping to double the number of tradesmen from the last festival – there were 50 in 2007 and they already have more than 80, so they’re well on their way!

This year’s tradesmen will be doing everything from hand splitting logs to selling ice cream, which

is sure to be a favorite with the kiddies.

Speaking of little ones, many young people will, once again, be attending the festival free of charge.

All Nelson County fourth and fifth grade students, plus any home schooled students studying Virginia history, are eligible for a free pass to attend. Those passes must be attained ahead of time though, so contact an elementary school near you to get your hands on one.

Terry Campbell will be in charge of children’s events like storytelling once again this year. In addition to the many children’s activities and tradesmen, events of the day include period music and dance, re-enactors in period dress, plantation tours and mini-seminars.

For kids of all ages, Pharsalia is a great place to learn about history hands-on.

“We’ve got the ice house, we’ve got the kitchen,” explained Foxie Morgan, who owns Pharsalia, her family’s homestead.

“The person coming for the kitchen will be doing hearth cooking and she’ll be making butter, she’ll be making beer, she’ll be making stew,” continued Foxie. “We have people in the next building, the old laundry… in there making soap.” NCL
