As much as Angelo seems to be fascinated by fire, Jerky seems to be fascinated by the other earth element: watery baby drool.

Adam’s got this great plastic monstrosity in my office called an Exersaucer courtesy Mama Staff. He enjoys spinning the frog and studying the squeaky flower. So much excitement would make anyone drool.

One afternoon, during deadline week, Jerky entered the room and gave Adam his first full-faced slobber. He didn’t ask for permission. He just did it.

Adam sat stunned in his plastic command center not quite knowing what to do. His mother, too, sat stunned, in her command center, wishing the camera had been a little bit closer.

Milestones.

Fairly or unfairly, Adam’s progress is measured in milestones. Sleeping

through the night. Flashing his first social smile. Jibber jabber. As for rolling over, he’s getting close.

There are times – quite often actually – that we find ourselves staring at this little man, a genetic marriage of his parents and very much a product of his environment. Much like the way Angelo stares at the wood stove, this baby’s glow is mesmerizing.

And it warms us.

To Your Health Part I Wine is good for you! We’ve been hearing that for a while and not just from the folks in the wine industries.

Let me explain why it really is good.

Wine, especially red wine, is loaded with flavonoids which are known for their antioxidant properties. Flavonoids fall under the polyphenolics umbrella as does the much touted resveratrol. (Although why anyone would want to pop a pill when he could be sipping wine will always baffle me. Let’s help the wineries not big pharma.) Phenolics are a varied group of compounds found mainly in the skins, pips and stems of grapes.

Because red wine is fermented with the skins and white wine is not, red is higher in phenolics and therefore better at protecting against heart disease.

As well as being good for your heart, wine also helps you digest—this means white wine too. We can trace drinking wine with food back to the Greeks and the Romans, and before that to Neolithic Persia and the Middle East, pointing to medicinal purposes as well as pleasure, for wine and beer are better than any other beverage to

accompany a meal and aid in digestion.

Wine stimulates the gastric juices in the stomach and unlike water it doesn’t dilute them. I learned however there are limitations to the benefits. The Greeks who were drinking wine long before I was also understood one important caveat. Remember Aristotle’s advice on moderation as well as the inscription on the Temple of Apollo at Delphi? Meden Agan, or ‘Nothing in Excess.’ Living in Paris, I proved both these theories correct. If, after dining with friends and sharing a bottle, enjoying two or three glasses of wine over several courses and hours, I would go running the next day in the park, I ran much better than if I’d stayed home alone and not had any wine at all. But if I indulged in four or five glasses, I didn’t run so well at all.

If you’re really concerned about health, look for organic wines just as you’d look for organic veggies.

Grapes are some of the most sprayed and chemically treated of fruits and there’s no need to drink chemicals if don’t have to.

Domaine de L’Ecu, Cuvée Ludwig Hahn, vin mousseux – The name of this sparkling wine sounds German

but comes in fact from France’s Loire valley and is a curious blend of Folle Blanche or Gros Plant, Chardonnay, Melon de Bourgogne and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard went organic in 1975 and biodynamic in 1986 which is no small feat considering the damp, misty climate of the Pays Nantais. A crisp sparkler with clear notes of lemon, grapefruit and lime as well as minerals and almonds.

And the best part, $18.99 for good, organic sparkling wine.

Montrius, Vacqueyras, Garrigues 2005 – From the appellation of Vacqueyras in the hot, heady and idyllic southern Rhône, Montirius is the impeccable fifth-generation estate of the Saurel family. The wine is rich, velvety and balanced; scented with spices and herbs as the name garrigue suggests, as well as deep notes of cherries, blackberries, plums, cocoa and wood. The Saurel’s vineyards, many planted in 1925, are carefully tended biodynamically. Drinking beautifully now but can age. Outstanding! (Listed in Wine Spectator’s top 100.) $25.99.

When Jean-Antoine Houdon sculpted a bust of Thomas Jefferson in 1789, he had the advantage of working with a live model.

Not so with Nellysford sculptor Charles “Flick” Flickinger who has had to sift through dozens of photographs to settle on a pose he thinks best represents President Barack Obama.

“You need to work it from every angle, especially the soft parts of the face,” Flick says, behind a pair of magnifying glasses. “Once you’ve got the bone proportions and it looks fairly reasonable, from photograph to photograph, from second to second, and if you have a real person in front of you, anything that can move changes. The forms change with each expression. And what you see in one photograph won’t coordinate with what you see in another one.”

It’s like staring at the moon, but which moon?

“You can think of say, the sunrise on the moon and how it pops up every little tiny bump, every little shadow and crater, you can see it all in sharp, sharp, sharp harsh light,” Flick explains.

“But as the sun comes up and say it’s shining straight on down and you were back a ways from the moon, you might not see much.”

A graduate of the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C., the human figure has been a consistent subject in Flick’s portfolio. In his studio inside the Rockfish Valley Community Center, an array of busts and figures of men and women, young and old, surround the artist who’s busy touching up a bronze-colored bust of the then president-elect. Behind him, on a table that sits alongside a window-covered wall, sits an army of Obama busts patiently awaiting their maker’s artistic attention. Made from Cast Stone, some of the faces bear pock marks, battle scars from the molding process.

Aside from a touch-up here and there, Obama’s expression is set. A refreshing departure from the iconic pose made popular by a series of campaign posters by street artist Shepard Fairey – the one where Obama is looking upward – Flick’s bust of the 44th president is far from pop art cliché. But

that’s his style.

“I want it to be looking up but not too overdramatic,” Flick explains. “Looking up only slightly. I mean, it’s not like he’s looking up to God for help, but you wouldn’t blame him at this point. And it doesn’t look too arrogant, but it catches a little bit of that sort of selfishness and confidence and coolness under pressure that you’re hoping that he will have and he’s evidenced in the campaign.”

So why must all presidential busts seem so somber, so serious?

“It would be nice to do a smiling Obama,” Flick admits, his own smile growing wider.

“That’s a hard thing to do in a sculpture because it’s frozen in time and you give someone even the slightest goofiness to their grin, and they’re totally silly ... He has a tempting smile, it would be very tempting to do a smiling Obama at some point. But I wanted to have something that serious, determined.”

So serious, determined Obama it is. Standing proud and tall at 8.5 inches. NCL

Natural sunlight should brighten a room, not fade it.

Is there any place in the world as beautiful as Nelson County? In my personal opinion, I would say there isn’t.

From Nelson’s majestic mountains, to her fall foliage, and let’s not forget about the snow falling gracefully from the sky. There is nothing better than enjoying each season, and all the spectacular splendor that Nelson has to offer right from the comfortable setting of your own home.

This past year’s real estate market may have evoked those same emotions of wishful anticipation, frustration, and some-what shattered expectations. Increased days on market, fewer sales, and dwindling home prices made a long road to travel for many area sellers. Here is an overview of what took place in the Charlottesville area real estate market with particular emphasis on Nelson County; for a more detailed year end summary go to www.

Homes Sold; There were 2,923 homes sold in the Charlottesville area in 2008, which was down 824 (-22%) from 2007. Nelson experienced a reduction of 19.6% with 156 homes sold in 2008 compared to 194 in 2007. October and November were extremely low months in sales volume and thus helped drag the

year-end sales number to a level we have not seen since 1998.

Median Sales Price; The median home price is not a measure of the “average” price of homes. The median price simply represents the middle of the market of properties that sold. The median home price of attached homes in the Charlottesville area declined by $14,500 or 5.2% from last year. (Median Sales Prices in 2008: Albemarle 320,100; Charlottesville 265,000; Fluvanna 244,450; Greene 258,000; Louisa 249,000; Nelson 300,000 which is down by 3.2% from 2007.)

Inventory of Homes for Sale & Days on Market; The basics of supply and demand remind us that high inventory equates to lower prices and vice versa. The good news is that the Charlottesville area market may be strengthening as the inventory of homes for sale has been declining for

the past 6 months in a row. However, inventory is still high when compared to the number of homes on the market in recent years. We currently have 3,086 homes on the market compared to 3,072 this time last year and 2,504 and 1,588 in preceding years. In a balanced market the Days on Market (DOM) should be around 90. In 2008 the average DOM was 119 which was a 27% increase from last year. (Average DOM in 2008: Albemarle 113; Charlottesville 110; Fluvanna 119; Greene 109; Louisa 108; Nelson 150 which is an increase of 35% from 2007) Price Per Square Foot (Finished); These figures reflect a softening of prices in 2008. All areas showed a decrease in the average price per square foot. Nelson County, thanks to the large number of resort properties, has consistently led the way in price per square foot, with Charlottesville generally second.

According to Kay Pfaltz, the teacher of Nelson’s newest creative writing course, there’s no need to have a huge vocabulary to be a good – or even a great – writer.

“Good writing is not about fancy phrases or big words or anything like that,” she said. “It’s about a good story.”

And that’s what she hopes to work on in her course, which will be taught in Pfaltz’ home in Roseland.

“We’ll go over plot and character development and dialog and the all the basics,” she explained.

“But the gist, the emphasis, this class is on the imagination and developing what you already have.”

And Pfaltz truly believes that anyone can write.

point out that no PhDs are necessary for writing, just a good imagination. (Don’t call her Dr., though – not even the students in her online English literature courses of the adult degree program at Mary Baldwin College call her Dr. Pfaltz!)

So she’s got the experience teaching. Pfaltz got a Master’s and PhD from King’s College in London (Virginia Wolfe’s alma matter, in case you were wondering.) And she even has one published book and another with a publisher now. But writing has always been a passion for her.

“I love the written word, I love language,” she said. And now she wants to share it with others.

The class will focus on fiction writing, but whether writing fiction or non-fiction, Kay says the key is writing what you know, combining a little bit of intellect and a lot of heart.

Clothes. Everybody wears them. Some people love shopping for them. Others despise it. But whether you love or loathe the process of getting them, chances are you have clothes.

And shoes. And curtains. And probably a toilet, too.

There’s no denying it, people use stuff. But buying stuff for a good cause makes it all seem a little more worthwhile.

The proceeds of the thrift store run by Kathy Miller benefit the SPCA. And she’s got lots of things you can take home on the cheap – in this economy or otherwise.

“A bargain is a bargain,” said Miller. “If you can get a $100 pair of pants for $10, you’re going to come here.”

And the SPCA Thrift Store has those kinds of bargains.

The store has actually been open for just longer than two years. Just recently, though, Kathy and the many volunteers who run the store moved to a bigger, better, more visible location just off of Hwy 29 in Arrington, at the old Anna Craig Mini-Mart building.

The SPCA Thirft Shop, located off Hwy 29 South in the old Anna Craig Mini-Mart building in Arrington, is open Monday through Saturday from 1pm to 5pm. For more information, call 434-263-8788. Pets are welcome!

The store has always had a bit of everything – yes, they once got a donated toilet which sold within two days on the floor. But now, there’s much more room to look around and peruse for purchases, eliminating what Miller calls the “butt brush factor.”

“People love [the new store]. They love it,” Miller said. “If they’re looking for curtains, they go to the linen department. If they’re looking for books, they go and spend time in the library. It makes it a lot more pleasant, it makes it easy to organize, it looks better and everybody’s just loving it.”

From the start, Miller knew she wanted to volunteer her time to help the non-human.

“I love the animals,” she said. “I wanted to do something to help them.”

But working in the shelter was not for her – she would have wanted to share her abode with all the homeless creatures she came across.

“So this is another good place to raise money so that Bette [Grahame] and her crew over there can help save these animals and house them and make them happy,” she said. NCL

Vieve Bernard’s travels took her to a school in Niteroi, Brazil, Rio de Janeiro’s sister city.

I have always had a trusty tether rope attaching me to Nelson, like a brightly checkered hot-air balloon. And I have gone places on it! Just last year I had the amazing experience of traveling through South America for about three months, spending the majority of my time in Niteroi, Brazil, Rio de Janeiro’s sister city. Having planned a tightly, but well-budgeted trip from the earnings of a year of post-college graduation waitressing money, I was ready for take-off.

I have many great memories of Brazil: mountains of awesome, unique geometries over sparkling water. Fresh, homemade mango ice cream. The pulsing crowd of a Samba House. The infectious roar of 90,000 soccer fans at Maracana stadium. Fruit cascading from the ceilings of tiny sidewalk booths. Bright colored clothing and bright colored smiles. But, above all gained a lasting impression of the children.

In Brazil, I lived at the Peixoto house, with Frederico, a Brazilian exchange student who lived

with my family in 1995. The family, especially Fred’s parents Paulo and Christina, devote an immeasurable amount of time volunteering at a school located on the edge of one of Niteroi’s favelas. Favelas are best translated as Brazil’s ghettos. But these shanty-towns exist on a far more serious scale in both numbers and poverty.

My second day in Brazil, Paulo took me to the school. It was a day of light for me. The school is a simple rectangular gray concrete brick building on the side of a dust road overlooking a lagoon full of grassy reeds and lanky white ibis.

The building stands out as stable, compared to the makeshift houses just up the road composed of sagging sheets of scrapmetal and other cheap, quick materials. Inside, a few large fans hum, keeping it slightly cooler than the smoldering air outside. That first day I entered the school the children sang out in unison, Bom Dia! Bom Dia!, their voices climbing with excitement.

As they called out “good morning”, I could feel

the vibrations in my heart. It was the first day back to school for the children, and the faculty had arranged a short play, a lesson on hygiene.

Amidst a dancing chicken, cow, and a lion, a line of tiny beaming children, an assorted spectrum of skin colors, formed a conga line. They clapped, danced, and sang their way along, booing heartily at a costumed diseased mosquito who carried the dangerous Dengue fever. The kids were elated except for a few wailing toddlers in the crowd.

While some “missed their maes,” others had more serious problems. Paulo pulled over one boy, around 4 years old, who seemed intent on squeezing every drop of moisture in his body out his eyes. He had a visible substance oozing from his ear. “His parents cannot afford medicine,” he explained. “So the school will pay for it.”

On another occasion, a friend named Junior invited me to attend his Saturday class at the school, where he volunteers with a group of 1013 year olds. Vibrant with excitement they all call continued on page 38

Intersectional Peonies Within just about every area of business in the world, innovation is providing mankind with advancements that are constantly producing ‘bigger and better.’ The green industry and in this case specifically the Peony industry is no different. It has been said that, “in peony breeding, the impossible is only a function of time, effort, and a sharp eye…”(The American Peony Society). The reason for the breeding was mostly in an effort to produce the Holy Grail for peony breeders, a yellow herbaceous variety. In 1986 the Indiana Jones from the peony community, Roger Anderson, broke through with a tree peony, herbaceous peony cross called ‘Bartzella’ and a whole new realm of Peony breeding began.

The cross between tree peonies, lutea species (kind of like a woody shrub), with herbaceous ones called lactiflora (the ones that you find in grandmas garden) resulted in a peony that offers the best of both worlds: • Zone 4 hardy perennials that will grow anywhere grandma’s peonies would grow • A vigorous growth habit

• A whole new color palette that was previously unavailable • Strong, sturdy stems that hold the flower upright even in rain • Huge flowers, sometimes 10 inches across in full bloom • Lateral buds that help to extend bloom time – as much as 2 weeks longer • Spicy and sweet fragrances • Lush foliage up until frost, then dormant My favorite varieties from this interesting group include the following: Peony ‘Bartzella’ has a lemon yellow, double bloom that can get up to 9 inches across when fully open and do not fall over when it rains – a fate that befalls many a peony in my personal garden. The plant grows to around 3 feet tall by 3 feet wide.

Peony ‘Julia Rose’ is a muli-colored peony displaying a range of off white, soft yellow, pink and salmon over the course of the bloom cycle – to me it looks like a coral yellow beach sunset with the range of colors in its petals. The bloom, as with most Intersectionals is huge, ranging from 6-7 inches at full bloom. This particular variety grows about 2 ½ feet tall by 3 feet wide. A sweet,

This semi-double variety ranges in color from light, cotton candy pink to light lavender on a 6-8 inch, fragrant bloom. It grows around 2 ½ feet tall by around 3 ½ feet wide.

Plant all of these in full to part sun, making sure that it gets at least 6-8 hours of sun per day. Intersectional peonies enjoy deep, well drained soil that has had some amendments added to it. As with all peonies, avoid at all costs low areas that do not drain well.

Another Intersectional that I grow and like very much is called ‘Kopper Kettle’. This semi-double variety has a blending of deep rose, golden yellow and burnt orange in its 8-inch bloom. It grows around 2 ½ feet tall by 3 feet wide. A long bloomer, expect to be cutting blooms to bring inside for around 6 weeks from start to finish with this nice hybrid.

“Whiplash” injury is a very real type of problem that costs communities billions in health care and disability dollars. Studies have recently shown that about 10-20% of the population suffers from neck pain and car accidents and other such traumas are a big cause of this type of pain. I often find myself explaining to patients that even the smallest of impacts can effect quite a substantial injury to the occupants of the vehicle. Ian Macnab, Associate Professor of Surgery, University of Toronto, had this to say; “…The force is dependent upon the weight and speed of the striking vehicle…” furthermore, “The amount of damage sustained by the car bears little relationship to the force applied.” So what about a 5 mph fender bender in your normal size car? Can that do damage to body tissues? More research indicates a resounding YES.

Whiplash causes misalignment of the spine, along with soft-tissue damage. Anti-inflammatories and pain killers may offer temporary relief but re-alignment of the spine is critical for proper healing and minimizing the onset of arthritis and nerve function. Often victims do not realize that injury to the neck, not only reduces movement of the neck but also function of the nerves that come from the neck.

When these nerves are irritated or “pinched” it can cause neck pain, headaches, shoulder pain, arm pain or upper back pain. To ensure optimum healing and reduce the risk of degenerative arthritis, get checked by a chiropractor soon. The longer one waits, the further the damage and the harder to repair.

By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Steve, My skin is dry and irritated a lot of the time, but in these cold months it is unbearable! What can I do?

Dry skin can be a big nuisance, but it can be a lot more than that too. Our skin is meant to be well moisturized – keeping it supple and protecting it from cracking. When it dries, it often starts to itch and crack. We scratch, the skin gets inflamed and irritated, and sometimes a vicious itch/scratch cycle or infection can set in. It is best to head this off early in the process if possible. In the winter, running a humidifier (especially if you have dry heat), limiting bathing, and using a good moisturizer can be a big help.

It is also possible, however, to have a more ongoing skin issue called eczema. Eczema is an irritated, dry, red, itchy and sometimes burning patch of skin. This is most common in kids, but certainly happens to people of all ages. It can be caused by exposure to irritants like soaps, detergents, cosmetics, or certain fabrics, or by stress, or even by ones own immune system attacking the skin. Eczema tends to run in families.

If you have eczema, or just very dry irritated winter skin, there are some things you can do at home to help. Water on the skin actually causes drying, so avoiding excessive hand washing and bathing can help.

Using luke warm water is less irritating to the skin than hot water. After bathing (and regularly at other times as well), dab yourself dry (instead of rubbing) and immediately put on a skin moisturizer. Use the greasiest and plainest stuff you can tolerate.

Scents and other additives can be potential irritants. When bathing, consider using a mild soap like Dove, or a non soap cleanser. You can try short term use of over the counter hydrocortisone on a particularly irritated spot, but if you are not getting anywhere within a week or so, its time to see your doctor.

The Buddy System As with most things in life, we enjoy the events more if we share them with a friend. The same can be said of exercise. Exercise is less of a chore if you are walking and talking with a friend. The time goes quicker.

It also helps to relief stress. However, there are times that I and others need to exercise alone to release stress (no one would really want to exercise with me in those moments lest the ugly side is released!). That is fine also.

How to get started? Most of us are feeling the same thing about now; how to get rid of the Holiday pounds.

So, contact some friends or family and see if anyone would interested in starting a walking program or joining a gym to begin an exercise program.

Then, set a weekly schedule, preferably 3 times a week. When determining a time, ensure that it is a time that is appropriate for you. For example, avoid making the time early in the morning if you are not a morning person. That sets you up for failure before you have started. Initially,

limit your time to 30 minutes. The important factor at this stage is that exercise becomes a habit- not how long you exercise. Write it in your day planner, calendar or type it in computer. Place post- it notes on your bathroom mirror. Call your exercise buddy the night before to confirm plans and be committed to the exercise and to each other. Only excuses such as the flu, sick children, cows falling from the sky or a Tsunami are acceptable.

The other benefit of exercising with others is the joy of camaraderie. The feeling that we are all in the same boat together, grinding away.

The companionship and friendship that develops between people. That in some cases is just as important as the physical exercise. Some folks do quite well exercising in their home but the research shows that most of us like the support of others and need that support to be successful. It helps if others notice that you are doing more and provide you with positive feedback. We need the support of each other and it helps us to stay

become healthier. The steps can be very challenging for some individuals. Some who have had a life long struggle with weight loss will always have to be attentive to eating and exercise habits and it can be really helpful if others support them. So, grab a buddy and go!

for my attention, Tia! Tia! They switch from calling me “Aunt” to calling me “teacher” when one of them impressively knows the word in English. The kids love hearing the alien English roll off my tongue, so I point to colors and body parts and say their names: blue, red, elbow, nose.

The kids are spirited and rambunctious. Even though it has been explained to them that I am not fluent in Portuguese, they perceive no barrier. They bombard me with questions, teaching me that laughter needs no translation. One little boy with miles of feathers for eyelashes brings me a piece of paper and requests that I write him a letter ... in English. Fernando cherishes his note that he can’t read and shows it off proudly to his friends. The lesson that day is that we are all connected.

Perhaps my strongest connection was with Gabrielle, a boy who offered to give me a tour around the area. About 10 years old, Gabrielle is so skinny that his knees looked massive against the rest of his legs. He has a raspy old man’s voice, far more monotone than the typical singsongy, roller-coaster Carioca accent. He led me and a friend through the outskirts of his favela past the drooping houses piled atop each other. Cool and professional, he talked the entire time, not minding that my friend and I could not understand much of what he said. He had a patience, kindness, and maturity that most parents can only dream of. At the end of the tour I looked in my bag and found a single U.S. dollar that had escaped the change over to Brazilian currency. Para voce, I told him, holding it out for him. A look of shock enlarged his already big brown eyes. For the first time since the tour began, Gabrielle was speechless, his vocal cords silenced by a sweet gratitude, his face alit with hope. Obrigado, he then shyly thanked me in his hushed raspy voice. When Paulo came over Gabrielle poured out his excitement and told Paulo his dreams of success. It was the best dollar I ever spent. NCL
