The dogs don’t seem to care much, Jerky and Nick sniff him out from time to time and are quite gentle around him.

Dogs are that way. Cats, on the hand ...

Angelo ignores Adam but he seems to exact revenge by getting into mischief.

The story starts with a fish.

A dead fish. Flounder, to be exact. At the Stafford house, it’s become routine to sequester the kitty during dinner time.

That means he gets to hang out in the guest bathroom with the old blue toilet (sorry, guests). After we’ve cleaned up, Angelo is allowed to rejoin society.

We’re upstairs and all of us – and that means Adam, too – are sleeping. We hear a crash that, instead of beginning and ending with one loud thud, appears to drag on with a succession of thuds for several seconds.

We go down to the kitchen and notice the pepper shaker had been knocked over into the sink. Angelo’s near the fridge wearing a guilty look. Bad cat!

A day goes by and once again, it is dinner time. But we notice a cooking grate is missing from the stove top.

Mommy brain kicks in and begins believing someone broke into our house and took our grate.

Tommy’s not convinced so we start

turning the kitchen inside out. If I were a heavy cast iron cooking grate, where would I go? Behind a chest leaned up against the wall, of course. A tuft of orange fur means Angelo did it.

In a desperate cry for attention, Angelo, with the smell of fried flounder still in the air, had gone for the grate. In the process of licking it, his kitty collar gets caught on the grate and in trying to wrestle it off, cat and cast iron fall to the floor. In a fight for his life and dignity, the cat manages to free himself, albeit a few yards away in the den. Crazy cat!

Adam would never do a thing like that, would you, Adam?

Wine and Tourism Part II As an American tourist in France preelection, I was intrigued to find so many people asking me my opinion and preferences for president. I’d answer honestly then steer the conversation around to food and wine, a subject equally as welcomed in France as politics.

In France the farmer is still highly respected as is the concept of la France profonde, an expression used all the time evoking the France of one’s grandmother or, more importantly, of grandmother’s kitchen. It translates to something like ‘the heartland of France’ implicit in which is the breadbasket of France. France is beginning to have its share of industrial farming, but here the small farmer still reigns.

To explore la France profonde we drove back roads through villages and unpopulated terrain, but in the Luberon valley, Peter Mayle country, there is not much left of la France profonde although a lot of la expensive France for tourists. I revisited favorite vineyards in the Vaucluse: Vacqueyras, Gigondas, Châteauneuf-de-Pape and Beaumes-deVenise. After climbing behind NotreDame d’Aubune, a splendid example of romanesque architecture, we wove

our way through vineyards where the vendage or harvest was in full operation.

At one vineyard the harried owner explained that the white Muscat grapes had just been picked and, as the sky threatened rain, needed to be driven to the winery as fast as possible. But the rain held, allowing us to picnic in a secret ruined chapel outside of Gigondas, and I think the grapes arrived safely.

We stayed in the Mas de l’Enclos just outside of Gordes in the Luberon Valley, and each day was literally a moveable feast. In the mornings we picked fresh figs. There were olives trees everywhere but of course fresh olives are nearly unedible. In our back yard, apart from the black kitten that Flash chased, was arugula, mint, dill, rosemary dandelion (or dent de lion, lion’s teeth) all of which we put into a salad one night. When we weren’t cooking in, we walked the darkened back alleys to Gordes. There I tried for the first time the aperitif Beaumesde-Venise à la Basilique, or sweet wine with basil. Yuck, right? I only knew of Beaumes-de-Venise as a delicious, honeyed dessert wine. But as our waitress who was also the owner insisted, I was happy to taste as I love trying any new food…or wine. It was a wonderful surprise that perfectly complimented the

Provençal cuisine of the region, full of flavor and savory herbs. I loved it and offer the simple recipe below for something different this holiday season.

Beaumes-de-Venise à la Basilique – To make this unusual and delicious aperitif, take one bottle of Beaumesde-Venise, open and infuse with a leafy stem or two of fresh basil. Let infuse for four or five days, then remove and slip in a new stalk. Keep the wine in the refrigerator; because of its high sugar content, it won’t oxidize. After a good week, take out the basil and smell and taste. It should have a beautifully pronounced aroma and taste of basil!

December 3, 1978 was a cold and misty morning.

The “Queen of the Railway”, the Southern Crescent was, winding its way through Nelson County, toward Charlottesville on it’s trek from New Orleans to Washington. In the dining car, breakfast was being prepared, most of the 65 passengers were still dozing. Shortly after 5:30 in the morning, Woody Greenberg, then a reporter for the Daily Progress, got a call from an acquaintance in Elma. She heard something horrible, and thought that there was a train wreck.

Greenberg didn’t get out of his house before his editor called him and said, “The Southern Crescent has wrecked near Elma, you are going to have to go and find it.” Woody drove over to Elma, and went down a path from the lady’s house. He followed the tracks a bit, and saw stunned passengers sitting on the sides of the tracks. “It was the worst thing I have ever seen” Greenberg said. He took in the scene, and started doing his job, interviewing passengers, and trying to figure out what had happened.

Russell North also got a call that morning. He woke his dad, A.C. North, a conductor on the Southern Crescent, and they went over to the crash site. Russell North is a train buff, and a history fan. He comes by it honestly, remembering a time when there were six train stops in Nelson County, when every kid hung out at the depot, and when you could waive at a conductor and he would waive back from the back of the caboose. He re-

The Southern Crescent was a plumb place to work.

Its cars were built in the 1940s and refurbished. The engines and cars all sported a unique green, white and gold paint on the outside, and its dining car had real linen tablecloths and silverware. It had a reputation as a fine place to ride. The Southern Crescent’s Chef, Lewis Price, was once chef for Governor Jimmy Carter, and had been featured in a Crescent advertisement hilighting his fine muffins, and fried chicken.

Unfortunately, the Crescent was running in the red, and the privately owned passenger train was either going to cut its service, or be taken over by Amtrak. On December 3, three of the four engines and seven of the eight passenger cars left the rails. The dining car was split by the car behind it, and plunged 40 feet down an embankment. Chef Lewis Price was killed, as were five others, and all told at least sixty of the passengers were injured.

members once as a kid, his father wrapped fireworks in a Washington Post, and threw them off the train as he went past. And there was one Christmas when his dad convinced the engineer to slow down near the North home, so that he could hand off a quart of oysters.

“The wreck of the Southern Crescent that day was like putting salt in the wound of the demise of a classic class 1 passenger train,” he says.

Eddie Embrey, chief of the Nelson County Rescue Squad, got a call from his mother, a dispatcher, shortly after 5:30 in the morning. “The Southern Crescent is on the ground,” she said. Embrey remembers calling in other rescue squads, and heavy rescue equipment while still en route to the site. When they arrived “Daylight was just starting to break. The cars were stainless steel and the sun reflected off a pile up of

railroad cars. There was leaking diesel fuel and the tracks were on fire.”

It was difficult to get to the crash site, volunteers could only get down one vehicle at a time and there was no room to turn around. Dazed passengers were transported by school bus to the Faber Squad station, and given some breakfast by the auxiliary crew, while they awaited transportation to a hotel in Charlottesville.

By six o’clock the next morning, the Southern Crescent chugged along newly laid tracks, and past the cars piled on the side. The Southern Crescent was taken over by Amtrak in early 1979, and much of its glamour tarnished. Oddly enough it derailed again in Nelson County, in 1983, just 4 miles from the site of the 1973 crash.

“People in Nelson County remember things,” North said. “Give them enough clues and they’ll remember where the depots were, they’ll remember the wreck, remember it as an incident in the lore of Nelson County.” NCL

People at the Rockfish Valley Presbyterian Church know that there are those who need help around the globe but are focusing on those close to home – people right here in Nelson County.

“We’ve got a lot of people that are below the poverty level here,” said Al Gale, an organizer of the RVPC Care Bear Tree. “And they do need material things.”

Like many girls her age, this year for Christmas Chance would like a baby bunny. Very similarly to other young girls and boys, she would probably enjoy a freshly baked batch of chocolate chip cookies. The thing is, most of her peers are human. Chance, however, is a dog.

But that doesn’t mean she can’t communicate.

On a recent trip to New York to visit animal communicator Amelia Kinkade, Kay Pfaltz’s dog, Chance, demonstrated her abilities to chat with humans. Kay, who writes the Basic Necessities column in this magazine, has been collaborating with Kinkade on an anthology of animal stories called Dancing in the Moonlight: Messages from Angels with Hooves, Wings and Paws.

“Chance is very philosophical, she’s told me things that just blow your mind,” Kay said. “Concerning my old thoroughbred who’s dead now and things that, she couldn’t know as a dog but she did.”

Kay maintains that all animals communicate and humans have the ability to understand from a very young age, but most people lose the ability around the same time they stop believing in the monsters under their beds.

“All communicators are doing is developing this ability that we all have,” she explained, mentioning that it wasn’t through any form of magic that she understood the animals.

“We’re talking about quantum physics,” she said.

“It’s not anything spooky or new-agey.”

Thoughts, Pfaltz said, are simply a field of energy.

Therefore, when a communicator is near an animal, the animal’s thoughts are projected and the communicator simply has a way of developing and using that energy to understand what the animal is saying.

So be careful what you say around your pets, you never know who will be listening when they repeat it. NCL

Tender loving care beats costly home repairs.

During home-buying mode it was location, location, location. Now in home-owning mode, the name of the game is maintain, maintain, maintain.

Your home may be the largest investment of your lifetime. Besides providing a safe place to live, you may aspire to one day sell the house with the hope of making money. Hence, it makes good sense (cents) to keep your home in tip-top shape.

Here are few maintenance tips that should be performed routinely: • Check water purification and water softener filters. Excessive levels of calcium and magnesium in hard water can lead to buildup in water heaters and eventually clog pipes and diminish plumbing efficiency.

• Test the pressure and temperature relief valve for proper operation. A temperature setting of 120 to 130 can economize utility bills. An operable temperature relief valve (TPR) can prevent a possible explosion by releasing pressure buildup in the water heater.

• Clean and freshen your drains.

To keep sinks running freely, throw a handful of baking soda into the drain and follow it with hot water OR pour in 1 cup of vinegar and let it sit for 30 minutes; chase down with very hot water.

• Degrease and freshen your garbage disposal. Turn on the disposal and throw in ice cubes made from equal portions of water and vinegar.

• Clean and replace furnace and air conditioner filters. Filters are cheaper by the dozen. Label each filter by month to serve as your monthly installation reminder.

• Clean range hood filter. Remove and clean the metal mesh filter that keeps grease from getting into the ductwork. Soak in hot water and liquid dish detergent and rinse clean with hot water.

• Clean appliances. Use an all-purpose, handy dandy cleaner made from 1 teaspoon borax, ½ teaspoon washing or baking soda, 2 teaspoons white vinegar, ¼ teaspoon dishwashing liquid,

and 2 cups hot water.

• Remove and clean range burners and keep range top clean as spills occur. Immediately sprinkle food spills with table salt. This will absorb the moisture and make the spill easier to clean up when the range top cools.

• Clean and brighten tile and grout.

Try hydrogen peroxide OR a solution of 1 part water and 1 part vinegar along with a new hard toothbrush.

• Test fire extinguisher pressure gauges. Always purchase fire extinguishers with a pressure gauge. If the pressure is low and it is a model that can not be recharged, dispose of it and replace it with a new unit. An extinguisher should be available for every 600 sq ft of living space.

• Test smoke detector sensors and alarms. Batteries should be changed twice a year, spring and fall.

• Test carbon monoxide detectors.

Carbon monoxide is the number one cause of poisoning deaths in America.

If you have only one detector, place it in a hallway outside the bedroom

mounted 14 inches off the floor to face height on the wall, but never where there is a draft.

• Test auto reverse safety feature on garage door openers. A garage door is often the heaviest and largest moving equipment around the home. Consult the owner’s manual for maintenance and lubrication tips.

Even if you have no plans of selling in the near future, performing routine maintenance can protect your home. Simple repairs, like replacing a furnace filter or changing a battery in a smoke alarm, can more importantly protect the ones you love. As you toil through this checklist, keep in mind that an ounce of prevention can have a pound of cure!

vidas mejoradas (improved lives) STORY by JENNIE TAL Thanks to their uncle, Steve Bouton’s nephews and their classmates have a sister school in Peru. Students at North Branch School have more in common with their peers in the village of Sipascancha, Peru than one might think.

Not only are the groups similar in age, but they’re both learning Spanish as a second language and they’re all psyched to talk to the children in another country.

“They seem to be really excited by their presentation,” said Bouton, who grew up in Afton. “The thing that sticks with them the most is that they seem to pick up the language issue.”

Many Americans learn Spanish in school, but the North Branch students are a few years ahead of the game. And while Spanish is one of Peru’s official languages, the students in Sipaschancha speak Quechua, common among indigenous people in the Andes, and very few speak Spanish any better than their American counterparts.

“So we would explain things with the names in all three [languages],” explained Bouton about the cultural exchanges. “I think that really may have made

them realize the necessity of a multilingual approach.”

At press time, Steve and his wife, Laurie Iaccino, were on their way to catch a plane to Peru, where they will make their way back to Sipascancha to continue a series of health screenings. As part of an outreach group called Vidas Mejoradas, Steve and Laurie are helping villagers improve their quality of life.

After generations of cooking over open flame wood stoves, many of the villagers and their children suffer from respiratory problems. To help, Steve and Laurie are working with them to install new stoves that use combustion chambers creating a safer breathing environment.

“All of it contributes to the best air flow and the best hot flame burning clean,” said Iaccino. “That’s probably a very important distinction, that it burns clean.”

“And it doesn’t create smoke,” she added.

In addition to installing the stoves, the small group provides health care and teaches the community about safer burning practices. In short, they’re making a huge difference in the lives of people they never knew. NCL

Afton-raised Steve Bouton, along with his wife, Laurie Iaccino, are traveling to Sipascancha, Peru to give health screenings to villagers, many of which suffer from respiratory issues related to traditional open flame cooking. Part of the group’s efforts is to install cleaner-burning stoves.

The children in the village have formed a relationship with students at their sister school, North Branch, in Afton.

Mary Coy breathed a sigh of relief in my recent telephone chat with her.

“They approved the money,” she said. Mary is a trustee on the board of directors for the Jefferson Madison Regional Library and represents the Nelson Memorial Library. A few weeks ago Mary was told that funding which pays for staffing at the library was being cut to the tune of $2,600. “That would mean we would have to close the library at Christmas and a week early next year sometime.” JRML pays for all of the books in the libraries, but it is up to local county governments to fund staffing.

In an unexpected move, the Nelson County Board of Supervisors voted to approve the money which means library programs like Wednesday Story Time for children will continue uninterrupted. A few weeks ago Mary was told the money was being cut. The library already uses volunteers whenever possible to save on overhead. “Library usage is going up as it always does in times of economic stress,” Mary explained. “People come in using the computers to look for jobs, college, etc.”

Mary says the budget has already been cut and that is why there is such concern about any additional budget cuts that would force staffing and service reductions. With the economic downturn, she expects to be facing more budget cuts down the road. NCL

Afton Family Medicine, an affiliate of Martha Jefferson Hospital, hosted a goingaway reception. “I’ll continue to see my patients in the nursing home, but I am hanging up my routine office care,” Dr. Bob said.

When it comes to apples, Tom Burford’s a rock star.

“I get calls from people with heavy accents that say ‘I’m from Warsaw, Poland and I want a copy of your book.’”

From Poland to Piney River, people trust the man with the shiny apple pinned to his cap. His book, Apples: A Catalogue of International Varieties, is an expression of Tom’s encyclopaedic knowledge of the fruit.

“The apple is not native to this country,” Tom says, as if reading from an entry of his book. “Seeds were brought,

as a matter of fact, to Jamestown in 1607 to plant and to raise apples not to eat, but to drink, for cider making. That was the original purpose of the apple in America.”

“Virginia has traditionally and historically been one of the great apple states,” Tom says proudly, as he prepares to begin a cider demonstration at Saunders Brothers Farm Market. “And that’s why it is nearly, for me, obscene when I walk into a supermarket and see apples from not only foreign countries but the West coast

when we are in this absolutely wonderful period of production of the apple.”

A small crowd gathers – the man from Poland couldn’t make it – and Tom begins dumping a pile of apples into an antique cider press.

“It’s powered by human energy and the idea is to extract as much juice of the apple as possible,” Tom says as Jeanne Scott begins cranking.

To press the perfect cider, Tom says you need a variety of apples. “You need acid, tannin, sugar, and a flavor.”

12 Days of Christmas Christmas is always and exciting time for me– partly because of a blessed childhood full of wonderful memories and also because of the opportunity to reflect, renew and rewind. As I began to reflect this year, I thought of what ‘12 Days of Christmas’ would be if you substituted the ‘Lords a Leaping’ to the landscape of your dreams – what would 12 days of gifts add? In my personal garden, these gifts give back to me each and every year, and if I had only 12 days, these would be those days.

1st Day of Christmas - stonework.

Dear Dr. Steve, I know I should get a flu shot every year, but what is this I hear about a pneumonia shot?

Pneumonia is bad news. It is an infection in the lungs that can be caused by bacteria or viruses, and usually causes a cough, shortness of breath, and fever. I was talking to my 89 year old grandfather recently who told me that his father died at a young age from pneumonia. He tells me he remembers as a kid that if someone got pneumonia, they died. Thankfully, a lot of people who get this awful disease now-a-days don’t die from it, but many certainly do. The pneumonia shot is a way to help prevent getting pneumonia.

There are probably 80 or so bacteria that can cause pneumonia, and lots of viruses (including influenza) as well.

The pneumonia shot protects against 23 of the most common strains of bacteria-caused pneumonias. It is made of parts of bacteria, not live bacteria, so it can not make you get pneumonia. Most people tolerate it very well, but some experience soreness where the shot was given and even fewer may get a low grade fever or body aches.

schedule get the pneumonia immunization series when they are under 2 years old. It is recommended that all adults get the adult version at age 65. Adults with long term illnesses, especially heart disease, diabetes, or lung disease, should get it when they are younger. Most people only need the shot once (unlike the yearly flu shot). The exception is if you got the shot when you were younger than 65 you need it again 5 years later or at age 65, which ever is longer.

Thankfully, my granddad is still doing pretty well at 89 (I interrupted his football watching to get my pneumonia history facts straight!), and he has had his pneumonia shot. If you are 65 or have a major health problem and have not had this immunization, please talk to your doctor about it. Plus, everyone loves shots, right?!!

Yoga instructor Bindu Johnson wrote this month’s column: Meditation There are as many definitions of meditation as there are people on the planet. I often try to define meditation and feel that any words I put to it fall short of the experience. I also notice that as I grow and change my definition of meditation changes as does my experience. Yet, I think that the simplest and clearest definition of meditation is one-pointed focus in duration.

In meditation practices, we choose a focus for our attention and endeavor to hold our attention on that focus.

By doing this, we redirect our mind from the usual thoughts of planning our future or reviewing the past to the present moment. We become more aware of our thoughts and emotions and thereby allow ourselves greater choice of how we respond to life.

Practicing meditation is a way to restore ourselves, giving us a sense of calmness and centeredness during our practice time and throughout the day.

ourselves and returning to our natural state of goodness and love.

There are many benefits to meditation including soothing our nerves and reducing stress. On a physiological level, meditation calms and stabilizes the nervous system, reduces muscle tension, normalizes blood pressure, reduces serum cholesterol, and increases serotonin, a neurotransmitter associated with happiness.

You might begin a meditation practice as a way to reduce stress or lower your blood pressure, yet you are most likely to experience something wonderful that is beyond your expectations.

Once an advocate, always an advocate. profile: Margaret Morton STORY by ELIZABETH FERRALL PHOTO by TOMMY STAFFORD â&#x20AC;&#x153;In cities you have homeless people living in a park or under a bridge, in rural areas, the homeless are more likely living three families to a house or more.â&#x20AC;? That is something that Margaret Morton has worked to fix for twenty five years.  When she moved to Virginia in 1968, having worked as a payroll clerk in Philadelphia, she began working for the Community Action Agency in Columbia, Virginia â&#x20AC;&#x153;People were living in shacks, and I have a great passion for children, they just canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t help themselves.â&#x20AC;?  The first six months were the hardest, Margaret remembers: some people were living in shacks, no beds, no bathrooms, some would eat out of cans because they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have dishes. Then she learned not to carry it home with her. But she says, with passion â&#x20AC;&#x153;I will not go home with a family hungry. I will take money from my own pocket to buy food.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I learned the hard way that you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t instill your values on someone else.â&#x20AC;? and she chuckles and says â&#x20AC;&#x153;I got a reputation for talking about education, I would ask â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Why is that child not at school?â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? She shakes her head with remembering.   As a Community resource specialist for the Monticello Area Community Action Agency, her passion is affordable housing, and she says that she has seen that situation get better over the course of her career. But I can tell from the gleam in her eye that there is more that she believes can and should be done. Margaret still coaches clients to prepare them for interviews with banks if they are trying to buy a home, and keeps a list of wood suppliers on hand if firewood is what is needed. She spends every day helping meet the needs of the people living in Nelson County, and if she canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get what is needed, directing clients to someone else who can help.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;She has spent a career in a field that faces many frustrations, a few rewards,

and fewer happy endings. Yet she still brings passion to her work every day.

But it is a passion tempered by the toughest love. She understands the challenges of poverty, but she doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to hear excuses. If you are ready to address your situation, she is ready to help,â&#x20AC;&#x153; is what George Krieger, said about her at her retirement dinner held in November.

Krieger and Morton serve together on the Nelson County Community Development Foundation, and work together at the Nelson Center. In addition to her position with MACAA Margaret serves on many boards. How many? She laughs, and counts them off on her fingers, there are six, including the Amherst County School board, and the Dental Task Force in Nelson.  Woody Greenberg, who also works with the Nelson Community Development Foundation says â&#x20AC;&#x153;She is one of my heroes ... She speaks her mind ... and knows where the levers are to make things happen.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is so much that is wonderful about this woman â&#x20AC;&#x201C; her concern but her guarded generosity. She is no pushover.

And she is so honest. That is why, when she sees a need, we at the NCAC know it is genuine.â&#x20AC;? Barbara Gibb told me in an e-mail when she related the story of Margaret getting help for a family living in unsafe conditions.  Now with her 75th birthday on the horizon Margaret Morton plans to retire from her position with MACAA. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It has been an exciting ride and with any good ride it comes to and end ... this is by no means a goodbye, but just a mere hello to another season in my life.â&#x20AC;?  She would like to travel, and perhaps indulge herself with the occasional long morning in bed. But she wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be giving up all the volunteer work she does, and she wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t give up believing that she can improve living conditions by pushing for affordable housing. Nelson County Christmas Parade Get ready for the holiday season by bringing your family to the annual Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade in the village of Lovingston.
