Weed Warriors

Reaching Out

For years NCLC has offered monthly opportunities for volunteers to join us on the land and get their hands dirty. This year we ramped it up a notch with the debut of Weed Warrior Wednesdays. All summer Eric, our land steward, invited folks to tackle some serious stewardship one day a week on one of our properties, from ripping out blackberries (above) to collecting native seeds. By September he had a solid crew of regulars showing up. Year Two of W³ kicks off in May; contact Eric at landsteward@ NCLCtrust.org for details.

You have a fundraising event to plan.

You have 2,600 envelopes to stuff and seal. You’ve invited 50 people to walk the Oregon Coast Trail with you and promised them snacks, guidance, and a good time. Who you gonna call? At NCLC, it’s the Outreach Committee.

More than a mere committee, this group has become the staff’s goto every time we reach out to the community or invite the public onto our lands. Enthusiastic, hard-working, smart, and committed to the mission: A land trust couldn’t ask for better collaborators.

A passion for preserving the magic of the coast Sharon Stern is an avid walker; she’s done long-distance hikes all over the world, and she regularly heads out with TrailMix, a Portland hiking group. So when she read in the North Coast Land Conservancy newsletter about the first-ever CoastWalk Oregon planned for September 2016, her interest was piqued—until she realized she had a date conflict. No worries: she organized an alternative CoastWalk in August with TrailMix members, using NCLC’s guidance and support, and asked participants to thank NCLC with a donation. Sixteen TrailMixers took part in the three-day walk (and, from all reports, had a blast). And the group collectively contributed $2,850 to NCLC, bringing the total raised by CoastWalk Oregon 2016 to $26,834.

Sharon lives in Portland and has a house in Cannon Beach, which served as base camp for the TrailMix CoastWalk. She’s been vacationing on Oregon’s north coast since she was a girl, and she and her husband, Steve Rallison, are among NCLC’s most generous donors. Many TrailMixers are supporters of the nonprofit Friends of the Gorge, Sharon says; CoastWalk was her way of introducing her hiking friends to NCLC, another Oregon conservation group worthy of their support.

“The coast was so magical to me as a child, and it still holds that magic for me,” Sharon says. “I can’t help but look at my surroundings and want them to be preserved forever.”
