Arrington Apples LEFt: On the misty cliff overlooking the ocean, Stormy and Robert McConnell Jr. were married last year in a ceremony that mixed traditional Native American rituals with contemporary touches. Sewn into the skirt of the bride’s dress were patterns of frog’s feet, a design signifying good luck. The basket caps, some hundreds of years old, are each unique. Stormy was attended by her sisters, shown in the photo left, and others plus three flower girls. The groom carried the couple’s son, Isha-Kom (“big water”) as he escorted his mother, Deborah McConnell. Photos by Salisha Dean, courtesy of the McConnell family.

Below: The North Coast is also to home to a large Jewish community that celebrates weddings with unique traditions like the chair dance. During a circle dance, called “the hora,” the bride and groom are hoisted up on chairs. Below, Talia Nachshon and Doug Clare were celebrated by friends at their McKinleyville home to music by jimmy jeff and the Gypsy Band. Photo by Arcata Photo Studios.
