While the Sun Shines

The clouds parT, The fog sTeams away and we find ourselves in another Humboldt County summer. Of course, spring weather lingers but so does summer, enjoyed here through September and a slice of October. Stretch out with us under the sun.

In our Perfect Trips section, you’ll find waters to paddle (kayak instruction included), gardens to stroll and berries to pick from the vine. Children of all ages can explore local marine biology and fill their pockets with samples of the local geology. You’ll find your way to Eureka’s weekly party in the streets and art in Shelter Cove to rival the views of its coastline.

Seekers of beauty, we are pleased to introduce you to Talisman Beads and owner Merry Coor, the well-traveled woman who stocks this glittering treasure chest. We’ll stop to browse a shop for runners and another for cyclists, both local institutions among Humboldt’s active set.

Once it’s time to put your feet up, take in a meal and a view at Falafel Love, a cozy spot with

a canal-adjacent patio and bright Mediterranean flavors. In Eureka, Rooftop offers a historic panorama and both classic and inventive sushi. Stay for sunset. Then catch some local color and live bands at the Wild Hare Tavern in Arcata, while you enjoy Guinness on tap, cocktails and house-made small plates into the night.

Still hungry? Peruse the Menu of Menus restaurant listings in the back of this issue, a comprehensive guide to our county’s eateries. And, as always, our calendar of events will take you through the season’s shows, festivals, plays and more.

See you out in the sunshine.

The Bead C ollector

Merry Coor of Talisman

Merry Coor does not think of herself as an artist or designer. Rather, she sees herself as a supplier of goods. In her case, she is a supplier of beautiful beads. As the owner of Talisman Beads in Old Town Eureka, it is a label she has been content with for some three decades and counting.

Ever since childhood, Coor has had a deep interest in beads. She laughs when she says that her interest did not necessarily extend to working with beads, just having them. She originally moved to Humboldt County from Mountain View to attend College of the Redwoods. However, when school didn’t work out for her, she needed to find another path and her love of sparkly things helped guide the way.

“I wanted to stay [in Humboldt], so I made my own job. I’m a college dropout.

I’m a really lousy secretary. I didn’t have any marketable skills. I decided, ‘I want to own a store.’ And I really like beads,” said Coor. In July of 1993, Coor opened Talisman Beads, a glittering treasure chest of a shop, packed with baubles in flat drawers and sparkling strands on the walls.

Having grown up traveling and living overseas, Coor also wanted to create a job in which she could continue to travel. As she stepped into her vision, she realized beads are everywhere. It was a win-win. With Talisman Beads, she gets to write off her travel adventures for business research and development, explore beads produced all over the world and bring home unique creations for Humboldt bead workers.

“I’ve been to a lot of places! The Czech Republic is renowned for beads and it →

‘‘ ‘‘ I just love buying and looking at the beads.

is always fun to go there,” said Coor. “You can see the whole entire process of them making the glass rods and pressing them and coating them, and stringing them — all the steps it takes. Wherever I travel, I go to bead districts. I just walk around and check out the stores for interesting beads.”

When Coor first started Talisman, she began sourcing beads at trade shows. Over time, she found places in the world that are unique and interesting for bead collectors. One of her first international sourcing trips was to Bali. There she found beautiful silver beads along with glass ones. She’s since filled her shop with not just beads, but also hanging Balinese wooden sculpture art and other trinkets that create a world of cozy beauty in the store. Her work travels have also taken her to Thailand, India and Egypt, among other locales, in search of beads. The spoils of her travels set Talisman apart from other suppliers.

In the years Talisman has been open, Coor has witnessed a lot of flux in her industry. The rise of Etsy changed how people purchased beads and beadwork,

as clientele could go online and buy almost anything they wanted. In recent years, the COVID-19 pandemic altered the customer base once again, pushing even more people online. And she suspects that the tariffs currently being argued for imported goods will shift her business even more. With so many possibilities to shop online, Coor works hard to set Talisman apart with special items nobody else carries. She purchases small runs of limited quantity beads and has many beads custom made, giving her a specific niche in the bead world.

“It’s a gamble,” said Coor. “You have to buy a whole lot of beads, like 10,000 of one bead. They take a long time to get made and maybe the color is off, or the finish is off, or maybe you are stuck with them for a long time, or they sell so fast that you try to order more but because they are custom, the next order looks a little different and nobody likes them. It really is a gamble.”

So far, the gamble has paid off. As part of the larger bead business world, she sees that bead stores are dying, that beading is in some ways a dying art in many places. But in Humboldt County and for Talisman, this is not the case.

“We are really lucky up here in Humboldt. There are four thriving bead stores in our county. I’m practically the youngest one,” said Coor. “We all have sort of a different twist. Even though we are small, Humboldt is

very supportive of the small business and the local businesses. When you buy beads, you want to be able to touch them and feel them and see them outside in the sun and see what goes with what. It’s hard to do that online. And here we can give our customers that.”

Particularly since COVID-19, Coor has had an exceptionally strong local customer base, with a lot of local Native artists turning to her shop for specialized beads used in regalia and other work. She carries over 100 colors of a specific size 12 triangle bead, which is often used in Native beading. Her customers come in to show her beaded sashes or tassels they’ve created for graduation ceremonies, among other delicate handworks they produce. Seeing the beautiful art created with beads she has specially sourced and knowing that she found what they needed for their pieces is one of the highlights of her job.

“I really like to source and buy beads. I know how to bead. I can teach people how to work with beads. But really, I just love buying and looking at the beads,” said Coor. “I see a lot of beautiful beaded work and think, ‘My god that’s so much work!’ I source all the things and get what artists want and I admire their art, and that’s what I am here for.”

Humboldt’s community gardens provide more than just a way to grow food, although it is fantastic that the Mad River Community Hospital Farm provides fresh produce for its Garden Cafe and the Wiyot Tribe Community Garden helps feed tribal elders. Some, like Henderson Community Garden in Eureka and Fortuna Community Garden, provide rental plots so residents can grow vegetables to please their own palates. Many gardens distribute produce to local residents, or have plant and seeds available for sale or exchange. Most of them could use some volunteer labor, which is a great way to learn about permaculture, from the best way to compost to making supports for rampant peas. Many are happy to have you just stroll through their bounty to revitalize your spirit. Check out the 27 gardens listed in the Cooperation Humboldt Local Food Guide (cooperationhumboldt. com/food-guide-2022). If you’re a local with no garden nearby, maybe it’s time to gather the troops and start one up. Contact the North Coast Community Garden Collaborative (Redwood Community Action Agency, 904 G St., Eureka, 707-269-2071) to find resources and ideas. Now go get some Humboldt dirt under those fingernails!

For those looking for a wilder experience, stop in at Kayak Trinidad (322 Main St., Trinidad, 707-3290085) to find your next adventure. Jason Self and his team of licensed guides are ready to help you dip your novice toe in Humboldt’s waters, be it lagoon or bay. Imagine whales swimming alongside your colorful kayak. Bring the family and book a tour. Schedule a session to work on your technique as it’s been a few years (or maybe a decade or two) since you last paddled. If you already know your way around but lack the accouterment, you can rent all you need to get back into the flow. The store is filled with the promise of adrenaline adventures.

Sunny Brae Community Forest is a quiet delight waiting to be explored. This 171-acre tract of redwoods is nestled behind Sunny Brae, with trails that connect to Arcata Community Forest (a whopping 2,350 acres including Jacoby Creek).

Take a good look as you approach on Buttermilk Lane. The land rises up and so will you. Park along 2205-2255 Margaret Lane to access Trailhead 1. Enter the woods by steep stairs or warm up a bit on the switchback ramp. Trailhead 2 is located on 2098-1800 Panorama Court but be warned: It is narrow and nearly perpendicular. Check for the designated one-way trail (and no horses) so bicyclists can enjoy the downhill rush safely. Dogs and their humans also roam these woods, so you may be subjected to a sniff test before an ear scratch is allowed. Marvin Musick’s family did right by him with a memorial bench placed at the perfect place for you to take in Humboldt’s forest magic. Visit the city of Arcata’s website to download the trail map and the Redwood forest bird checklist (144 species!).

Foodies

Art’s House Restaurant (39116 State Route 299, Willow Creek, 530-629-3663) is aptly named. The artistry the staff pours into their shakes is a sight — and taste — to behold. The Creme Brûlée shake will inspire gourmand dreams, while a sip of the Dr. Evil might bring a pinkie finger to your smile. It’s not just the shakes that will pull you in. Did you see the plate of French toast topped with mango preserves and fresh whipped cream? Did I mention the matcha mango marmalade custard? Or the rice crispy chicken sandwich with jalapeño ranch? And you get a free shake on your birthday? This is a restaurant worthy of pilgrimage.

Blue Lake’s Dog House (Perigot Park, 312 S Railroad Ave., 707-601-1302) is the place for a dog like no other — a hot dog, that is. The Bratty Dog comes with sauerkraut made by the mother-daughter team Darcey and Meghan. Their potato salad is worth a special trip, too. Eat your way across the country from the Big Apple Dog (an apple and brie delight) to the celebrated hound of Chicago, the Windy City Dog (think relish and celery salt). Celebrate the Humboldt

coast with the Umami Dog, complete with Larrupin’ mustard (is there any other kind?). Handy benches overlook the park’s baseball diamond and community garden, satisfying both the sports fan or flower child.

Head out to Noble Berry Farm (3563 Fieldbrook Road, McKinleyville, 707-8346299), where family memories are made. And jam. Lots of delicious jam. Acres of blueberry varieties wait for you to pick them. Noble planted his berries in 2008 and has spent 15 years doing the best job on the planet. The farm’s main crop is ready come solstice and they keep Humboldt in the blue until September. Class trips and groups are welcome, too. The time to pick is afternoons on Wednesday through Sunday. Keep an eye on the farm’s Facebook posts to see when the blueberries are ready for you. The farm sells some veggies and their neighbor’s strawberries when available. “Pick n grin” is Noble’s motto, so cue those smile muscles and grab a bucket.

In one painting at Schlueter Gallery (330 Second St., Eureka, 707-498-0059) Humboldt’s public workers are captured by local artist Stock Schlueter as they responded to a broken water main. It hangs among his many luminous landscapes of Humboldt and the world beyond. His talented wife, Rachel Schlueter, is represented with her sensitive portraits of people and fabulous felines. The gallery also shows the works of other locals like Jim McVicker and George Van Hook, who exchanged painting techniques on camping trips with

Schlueter in the early 1980s. The Schlueters host portraiture painting sessions so you can pick up their techniques without having to sleep in a tent. Stop in and admire the fine eye of Eureka’s creative couple.

The talented artists of Phosphene (426 Third St., Eureka, phosphenehumboldt@gmail.com) are barely contained by this small gallery. Their colorful paintings and collages are displayed along an impressive collection of metalwork and handcrafted jewelry. The local zines rotate on a rack of creative outpouring, both fiction and non. Who can resist the selection of snazzy stickers designed by Humboldt’s artists? Ask about the gallery’s name while you’re there because artists know a lot of cool stuff.

The galleries of Shelter Cove are not on the beaten path. The remoteness of the Lost Coast inspires local artists, daring them to capture its magical light and raw beauty. The Shelter Cove Art Gallery, located in the Inn of the Lost Coast (205 Wave Drive, 707-986-7521) is open daily, presenting gorgeous glass work and luminous paintings in a drop-dead gorgeous setting overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Run by the Shelter Cove Arts and Recreation Foundation (SCARF, 707-9867120), the gallery hosts five receptions per year on major holidays, like the Fourth of July. Twice each year, they host an artist in residence in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management. Arts At

Heart (533 Machi Road, Shelter Cove, artsatheartmakers@gmail.com) is the gallery of the Lost Coast Makers Collective. Visit artsatheart.com to preview the many gorgeous pieces available. There are glowing woodworks, flowing fabrics and inspired sculptures. The collective has hosted workshops on copper etching, watercolor painting and making wind chimes so keep an eye on its calendar for upcoming opportunities to expand your artistic expression.

With the Kids

Sometimes the best things in life are in your own front yard, or Pacific Ocean. Bring the family to Cal Poly Humboldt’s Telonicher Marine Lab (570 Ewing St., Trinidad, 707-826-3671) to show them that what lurks beneath are not monsters but some really cool creatures. The outdoor touch tank lets little fingers feel the gentle stickiness of an anemone’s tentacles — similar to a kitten’s tongue. Peer into the algae room to see bubbling glass jars of living green goo. If your young ocean explorer gets hooked, check out the summer education programs (day camps fill up quickly). There is also a preserved giant squid that will give your child an eye-level view of this elusive denizen of the deep (tentacles safely deactivated). FYI, the parking may be tight but admission is free.

Humboldt Lagoons State Park is a treasure tucked away in Northern Humboldt. Pack the family into the car and hit the road. The Chah-pekw O’ Ket’-toh Visitor Center (15336 U.S. Highway 101, Trinidad, 707-677-3570) is a cultural gem on the shore of Stone Lagoon. Your children can learn from the Yurok Tribe, which operates the center, hearing about its leadership of conservation efforts protecting and restoring Humboldt’s lands and waters. Then take the kids out to the California Coastal Trail (day use access 4 miles north of the center). Scope out the lagoons for a future paddle with kayaks rented at the Welcome Center. You can enjoy the stunning beauty of the lagoons and ocean while they run off some steam before the trip home.

Speaking of gems, have your children ever wondered why Moonstone Beach is called Moonstone Beach? Or about the volcanoes that spewed lava all over Humboldt long before Humboldt was Humboldt (hint: think Trinidad Head)? Time to learn about Humboldt’s geology. Visit the Cal Poly Humboldt Natural History Museum (1242 G St., Arcata, 707-826-4479) for a bedrock education. The Humboldt Gem and Mineral Society hosts junior rockhounds once a month, as well, so check out its Facebook page for location and times for your kid who fills their pockets with rocks. (Here’s hoping you discover them before laundry day.)

Not Strictly for Tourists

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Starting in July, Humboldt’s Hometown Store (394 Main St., Ferndale; 707-496-0588) adds the Newspaper Office to its Escape Rooms to challenge those who solve mysteries before the first commercial break. The Locker Room can hold the key to a birthday blast for the teen who just discovered their inner sleuth. The doors are not locked, so it is a safe and fun way to entertain friends, family or clever coworkers. Or challenge yourself to Escape the Cell — one to four people, handcuffs and no hints. Visit humboldtshometownstore.com to make a reservation.

The scent of summer is in the air and it’s Friday night. What to do? Head to Old Town Eureka and mingle at the Friday Night Market . The food trucks wait to tempt your taste buds as the creative endeavors of local artisans at their vendor booths catch your eye. Move with the live music as you follow the flow of the crowd from delight to delight. Join the fun every Friday night from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. (except July 4, when the holiday street festival takes over).

Looking for a way to center yourself? Labyrinths, an ancient form of earthworks built by prehistoric peoples and 11th century monks, may hold the key.

All Happy Now at Humboldt Botanical Garden (7707 Tompkins Rd, Eureka, 707-442-5139) was created by Peter Santino as an artistic merger of the labyrinth, ziggurat and Fermat’s parabolic spiral. Channel your ancestors as you mediate and stroll your way around this fabulous landscaped coil. There is a $10 charge to enter the gardens. Take in their beauty while you are there.

The Lost Coast Labyrinth (1025 Upper Pacific Drive, Shelter Cove) is nestled in tall trees encouraging visitors to enter its quiet circle. This earthwork was created by the Shelter Cove Arts and Recreation Foundation in 2024, and is dedicated to Karin Dunphy who planted the project’s seed.

Look to the Southern Humboldt Community Park (1144 Sprowel Creek Road, Garberville) for your next labyrinth adventure. Teacher Gillian Brown designed the earthwork as she completed her master’s thesis on labyrinths and completed it in 2008 with the help of Kay Christian. Wind around the spiral as you unwind your mind.

For a more medieval take on the labyrinth, visit the small memorial garden alongside St. Alban’s Church (1675 Chester Ave., Arcata). This is not a walking labyrinth, but one to trace with your finger. The colored mosaic is located in front of a wooden bench, a lovely corner of Humboldt in which to contemplate your world.

Sushi

Rooƒtop

In Humboldt, we love t H e ra I n , the mist and the fog. But when the sun makes its appearance, we bask in its rays all we can. At Rooftop in Old Town Eureka, chef Joe Tan is serving classic and inventive sushi, with a dose of vitamin D.

The fourth floor patio affords a panoramic view of the historic waterfront district, with its Victorian storefronts, bookshops and quaint streets. It’s almost enough to distract you from the plates coming out from the sushi counter. There,

Tan and his crew craft the day’s five-piece omakase nigiri offerings ($26), which might include delicately sweet scallops from Hokkaido, Japan, that have never seen a freezer. Fresh salmon, thickly striped with fat and barely seared, is topped with a miniature “egg” and black caviar, while creamy uni (sea urchin) pairs with the zing of fresh wasabi.

Putting yourself in the staff’s hands to order sake is a solid bet, too, as the options are broad, from flavored to nigori.

Photos by Aoife Moloney
Above: Her majesty, the Sea Queen roll.

The overwhelmed can opt for Premium, Playful or shochu flights ($16-$18).

Share the kampachi (amber jack) and American wagyu carpaccio if you’re of a generous disposition ($20, $24). The former is lightly dressed with sesame oil, green onion and citrus ponzu sauce, a hint of heat from togarashi chile and chile oi l . The beef, marinated and seared, gets a spicier ponzu and crispy fried onion. Pro-tip: The beef shows up in the Surf & Turf roll ($22) with tempura shrimp, too, for those can’t get enough. The popular Gaijin Fries are a fun split, too, tossed with nori seasoning and drizzled with spicy mayo ($10).

A refreshing switch from traditional maki rolls is the Naruto ($18), with fresh ahi tuna, avocado and crab rolled

in a ribbon of cucumber, further brightened by ponzu and topped with tobiko. But the diva order is the aptly named Ocean Queen ($26), wearing her lobster tail crown. It’s a sumptuous roll with the aforementioned lobster tail, snow crab, crab and avocado, sprinkled with tobiko, wrapped in soy and sweetened with unagi sauce and a mango aioli.

The 14-ounce ribeye steak with yuzu-cilantro butter ($35) might be the most tender in town, marbled and sigh-inducing. A more whimsical option is the sushi “taco” ($14) with its fried nori shell around layers of spicy tuna, shrimp, salmon, avocado and tobiko, all drizzled with spicy mayo.

As the sun sets — if you have a no-selfies rule at the table, you might want to suspend

it — overhead heat lamps will keep the bay chill at bay, and fruity cocktails and mocktails keep the summer vibe going. A nostalgic Ramune Japanese soda is a must for the kids (of any age) who’ll enjoy forcing the glass marble into the bottle’s neck to open it ($6).

Tall shochu cocktails are shaken with fresh fruit purees from blackberry to mango ($14), with an optional shot of flavorful, emerald green house-made jalapeno syrup.

(Go for it — our shy side shot order ended with us downing it all anyway.) Not drinking? The zero-proof versions are also wonderful. And there’s no better vantage point from which to toast the town. H

Small family ranchers are an important part of Humboldt Grassfed Beef’s success. Our partnership with these generational ranchers and independent markets make our product a truly Northern California experience that our customers can be proud to serve to their families.

Humboldt Grassfed Beef cattle come from ranches throughout Northern California from ranchers that have been stewards of the land and cattle for generations. Our partnership with these ranchers helps us to meet our goal of providing beef with the best flavor while being sensitive and respectful of our natural resources.

Falafel Love

King Salmon i S “out of the way but not far away,” says Avi Leibson, owner and chef at Falafel Love. Since the restaurant opened there last summer, it’s been drawing folks out of their way with home-cooked Mediterranean specialties beyond its namesake falafel.

Photos by Aoife Moloney

The sweet dockside patio overlooking the canal, where the occasional kayak or fishing boat drifts past, is bordered by potted flowers and an herb garden from which the staff picks the mint for the tea, as well as thyme, sage, rosemary and savory used in the kitchen. A row of sunflowers should be blooming soon, too.

“Humboldt is always looking for outdoor seating,” says Leibson, who notes King Salmon is sometimes a patch of sun when other places are socked in with fog. Of course, being right on the water also

means occasional winter flooding, as evidenced by the viral video of Leibson paddling a kayak through the restaurant’s front door during the King Tide in December.

If you forgot sunblock, the covered pergola is a fine spot for sampling the bright flavors at Falafel Love. For first-timers, the combination plates offer a side of fragrant turmeric rice and a sampling of four sides that allow vegetables to shine. It will be harder to choose than you think and you’ll get little

help from Leibson. “Everyone has their own palate,” he says.

The carrots’ natural sweetness is brought out with the heat of harissa, while the beets are wonderfully bright with preserved lemon. The sumac onions may knock simple caramelized ones down in your rankings and the smoky-creamy eggplant babaganoush are as luxurious as you’d hope. That’s not half the offerings. Those of a mind to graze might choose a plate of six sides to nosh with pita chips ($18). The chick-

en plate comes with marinated and sautéed thigh meat, wonderfully fragrant with spice and the fruits of the herb garden, drizzled with tzatziki ($16).

The falafel wrap is an unassailable choice, formed and fried to order, wonderfully nutty and herby with the perfect crunchy exterior ($14). Four sides go in the wrap, too, and you might consider including the green zchug, a puree of peppers and herbs that sings alongside the richness of the hummus.

The “herbaceous” Baharat kebabs, served off the skewer, are a blend of lamb and beef, both enhanced by the seasoning and grilling ($17 plate, $16 wrap). Scooped into a warm bit of pita bread with preserved lemon or fire roasted peppers, the meat’s richness is somehow balanced and heightened.

A few squares of homemade baklava ($4.50) make a honey-sweet coda to the meal, as does the malabi , pale rosewater custard turned blush pink by hibiscus syrup and served with chopped pistachio and coconut ($4.50). Check the board, too, for the cupcake of the day by Betty Bakes in Humboldt ($4.20).

Hopping into

the

Wild Hare Tavern

For years, a ngela r obershotte toyed with opening her own bar. In 2024, with her kids nearly grown and flown, she decided to give it a real shot. After all, she had worked in numerous local establishments for years and was already working some 65 hours a week. How much harder could having her own place be? (As it turns out, a lot.) But, thanks to Robershotte’s vision and dedication, the Arcata scene has a new community gathering space: the Wild Hare Tavern.

Reinventing the former home of the storied Jambalaya (later the Jam) right off the Arcata Plaza took hours upon hours of remodeling and revamping. Now, when you walk in, Robershotte’s presence is clear from the fresh flowers in the bathroom to the gleaming bar and friendly greetings. As bartender Alex March commented, the staff are all invested in the tavern being a safe space for all, and it seems to be hitting the mark and Robershotte has earned the nickname Bar Mom for her care of staff and clientele alike.

“Bar mom,” Robershotte said with a laugh when she heard the term. “I think

that’s just part of good service. … All our food, all our drinks, our offerings, all our service really, it must be of good quality, or I don’t want it.”

From soup to nuts (literally), everything on the menu is as fresh, locally sourced and as close to scratch-made as possible. The Tavern’s kitchen is led by Kevin Hover who plied his culinary degree at the Fairmont Mission Inn & Spa in Sonoma for several years. Hover is proud of his small menu, as he should be. The hot dogs are Wagyu beef. The meatball sub is stuffed into a Brio ladybug roll. The split pea soup is hearty, nourishing and flavorfully spiced with chorizo. The kale Caesar salad is topped with a beautiful, crisp Parmesan tuile cracker. The potato chips are house made, as is the garlicky fresh basil aioli that comes with the French fries. And the bar nuts? Hover tosses each variety of nut with its own special seasoning — the almonds in his sesame ponzu, the pecans with maple and bourbon, and the cashews with honey, garlic and herbs. They are impossible to stop eating.

The same level of quality and care has gone into the drink offerings. “We don’t

have anything super high end, and we don’t have anything super low end, either,” said Robershotte. “The bar is really trying to appeal to our local working-class community and general population of Humboldt, people who appreciate good things but also maybe don’t want to spend on super expensive cocktails.”

With that, the Wild Hare has 12 beers on tap, including Guinness, and other beer offerings in the cooler. They have signature drinks including a classic Old Fashioned and Lemon Drop. They also make a oneof-a-kind drink with local It’s Alive kombucha called a Booch Bomb,

inspired by customers asking for cocktails with Red Bull and energy drinks Robershotte refuses to carry. So they used the kombucha as an experiment and voila! The Booch Bomb was born and it is deliciously quenching.

Hosting something for the public every night of the week is also part of Robershotte’s vision. Currently, the schedule is packed: Mondays are game nights (soon to include ping pong and cornhole); Tuesdays are Band Practice, with local live musicians and no cover fee; Wednesdays have become tasting nights, with wine and/or beer education; Thursdays are informally known as birthday party days (Robershotte has been known to bake a cake if she has enough notice); Fridays are either live music or DJ music; and Saturdays are for live music. Although the tavern is family friendly during kitchen hours, most nights are 21 and over only.

Beyond the semi-set schedule, Robershotte is always looking for more ways to include the community and expand the tavern as a gathering space. “We had Hat Day for the Kentucky Derby. That was a lot of fun,” said Robershotte. “I’ve been thinking I want to do Shower Sundays, where we host people’s baby showers or casual bachelorette parties and whatnot.” And who better to celebrate with than your Bar Mom?

Viva Revolution Bicycles

Photos by Holly Harvey

Viva

When Revolution Bicycles opened in 1994, it operated out of a van in an empty lot next to Arcata’s City Hall. Since then, it has moved several times, and its two locations in Arcata and Eureka are more than bike shops — they’re resource centers for people interested in cycling of any kind.

Revolution sells the full range of bicycles (road, mountain, hybrid, electric, kids’ and more), but also bike parts, ac-

cessories, helmets and clothing. Owners Sean Tetrault and Justin Brown, as well as their staff, are all passionate cyclists themselves. Tetrault and Brown contribute to local trails, nonprofits and schools, offering training, bike clinics, repairs and trail maintenance.

Competing with online companies is challenging, especially those that offer heavy discounts. However, “When you buy online, the initial investment may

↑ Co-owner Sean Tetrault at work in the shop.

be low, but then you find that the parts aren’t high quality or can’t be easily replaced,” says staffer Trey Motley. And the staff on hand are ready to help you narrow down your selections and tinker and tailor it once you’ve got your wheels.

Brown is seeing an uptick in the popularity of electric bikes, which comprise 30 percent of their bike sales. “E-bikes are a great equalizer,” he says. “Couples who cycle at different paces can ride together. And aging people with knee or other health issues can also ride.”

Local cyclists, the Revolution staff included, are excited about bike trails under design and construction all over the county, the most visible being the Bay Trail linking Eureka and Arcata that’s scheduled to open by July. Another bike trail opening this summer is the 5-acre multi-sport Blue Lake Bike Park, modeled after skate parks, with a designated area for kids, a paved pump track for cyclists, skateboarders, roller skaters and wheelchair users, and a more challenging bike park area for advanced bicyclists.

And when they’re ride ready, Revolution Bicycles will be ready with all the gear and gears Humboldt needs.

Keeping Pace with the Jogg’n Shoppe

Photos by Holly Harvey

A few blocks toward the Arcata Plaza from Revolution Bicycles is Humboldt’s only dedicated running shoe store, The Jogg’n Shoppe. Owner Mike Williams chats with patrons and pals as though he were their barber, and if he hasn’t got the shoelaces you’re looking for, he’ll take the time to go over alternative suggestions. It’s one reason why the shop has been a beloved local resource for 50 years. “I love having the shop,” Williams says. “It’s like my own clubhouse. Two or three buddies come in everyday just to chat.”

The store was started in 1974 by two coaches, Jim Hunt from then Humboldt State University and the late Chuck Ehlers from Arcata High School. The timing couldn’t have been better. “The store’s growth coincided with the

running boom that began in the ’70s,” says Williams. The former owners liked putting on running events. “It was so easy back then — no permits, no signatures.”

Williams worked at the store in the ’80s, when he ran competitively for the university. He was the league champion in cross country in his senior year, and the county champion in the 1- and 2-mile races in his junior and senior years. In 2005, Williams bought out the owner and has run the Arcata shop ever since.

“Back in the ’70s there were only 15-20 percent women, whereas now it’s 50/50. Plus you have a wider age range today, from older folks all the way to kindergarteners running track and cross country. Parents want their kids to be active and not on their phones constantly.”

These days running is “much less achievement oriented and competitive and more relaxed,” Williams says. Fun, recreational events like the Thanksgiving Turkey Trot and the Trinidad to Clam Beach Run encourage people of all ages, speeds and sizes to participate, whether they choose to run or walk.

“Humboldt is an outdoor community,” he says. “Running, walking, biking — we live in an environment where we can do them all.”

McKinleyville ↗

The sign says horses have the right of way, which should give you an idea of McKinleyville’s vibe. Some of its biggest attractions are outdoors. Play with the kids in Hiller Park and hike or bike the paved Hammond Trail. Ditch your shoes and spend the day at Clam Beach (yup, there are clams out there for the digging) kayaking, paddleboarding or just relaxing among the dunes. There’s a course if you’re itching for a round of golf, and there’s even a sweet, little waterfall tucked along the road into town. Already visited the world’s biggest ball of string? Swing by the world’s tallest totem pole.

Blue Lake →

Humboldt residents socked in by summer fog know that they can find warm refuge in Blue Lake, a picturesque town whose motto is “sunshine and sea air.” On the shores of the Mad River, locals enjoy fishing, sunbathing and swimming in the summer, and fun hikes and bike trails anytime. In addition to fun outdoor adventures, Blue Lake is a hub for music and the arts. The Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre imports students from around the world, producing shows throughout the year, including the annual five-week Baduwa't Festival. You can also sing along at Humboldt Folklife Festival in July, a weeklong celebration with live music, dancing and workshops. With the little ones? Check out photos and artifacts from Blue Lake’s pioneer, Indigenous, logging and railroad histories at the Blue Lake Museum or visit Perigot Park, where you can play baseball or soak up picturesque views.

This place is full of stories. Once a raucous lumber town and fishing village, early Eureka bustled with saloons and brothels, along with a hardy mix of rugged entrepreneurs looking to settle the North Coast. Jack London himself is said to have taken a swing in a barroom brawl in Old Town. Today, the boats still bring crab and salmon to the docks, and historic buildings at the edge of Humboldt Bay form a walkable enclave of places to browse, drink and dine. Slow down with a stroll along the waterfront trail or lean on the railing of the Old Town boardwalk and watch the boats go by. And don’t miss Arts Alive!, the first Saturday night of each month, when the streets fill up with folks touring the shops, restaurants and galleries for local art and live music.

Ferndale ↖

There’s a reason Hollywood keeps coming to film in Ferndale. It’s an idyllic American small town that hasn’t lost its character. (You might recognize Main Street’s Victorian architecture from movies such as The Majestic and Outbreak.) Ferndale’s downtown offers plenty to explore, including artist galleries, old-fashioned shops, classic restaurants and the Ferndale Museum. Grab a coffee and window shop the vintage storefronts and take photos of the Gingerbread Mansion, or put on your hiking shoes and take in the view from the bluffs in Russ Park or Centerville Beach. Downtown or in the great outdoors, it’s a trip back in time.

Eel River Valley

Hike and bird watch on the newly opened Eel River Valley Estuary Preserve or head to Table Bluff for storm watching. Tour the former lumber company town of Scotia, with its rows of old, redwood houses, and see what's going on a the Winema Theater, a gorgeous redwood monument to the heydey of the timber barons. Stop in Rio Dell for a dip in the river and unspoiled vistas.

Avenue of the Giants ← →

Even those of us who live among redwood giants look up now and then in amazement. Driving along the Avenue of the Giants shows you something new around every corner, something photos and video can’t quite do justice. We lean on words like “majesty” and “breathtaking,” but you kind of have to be there under the ancient, towering canopy to really get it. Take it slow and plan to make a few stops. (Are you not going to stop and see chainsaw sculptures? Please.) From kitsch to fine woodwork, the shops along the Avenue are their own local attraction. South is Garberville, where you can hit the farmers market for an afternoon treat and maybe catch a show. The nearby Mateel Community Center regularly brings in major musical acts and puts on some of Humboldt’s biggest festivals.

Shelter Cove ←

Aptly named the “lost coast,” Shelter Cove is nestled in a stretch of beach that offers a natural retreat tucked away in its own world. Accessible by sea and air, the town has one road in and one road out. Once there, enjoy fishing, hiking, boating, golf, excellent lodging and camping options. Settle in for winter storm watching, whale watching or a hike along a unique, 24-mile stretch of black sand beach. A natural coastline unfettered by highways and the normal comings and goings of humanity make Shelter Cove a singular American destination.
