POLITICAL TRIFECTA: Conservative incumbent Pierre Poilievre celebrates his re-election Tuesday night with campaign manager John Light and a crowd of supporters. It is the third consecutive victory in federal politics for the MP who will turn 30 next year. He upset the incumbent Defence minister Liberal David Pratt in his political debut. abeth May lost her riding. But that cheering was nothing in comparison to the cheers when it was announced that Poilievre had won the riding and when Poilievre walked into a
room, led by a bagpiper. The three-time MP said voters have given him a stronger mandate than last time by giving him more votes. “This riding is filled with
talented, hardworking people,” he said. “I represent common people who live in this riding.” He also congratulated his opponents — Mahfouz, NDP Phil Brown and Green
Lori Gadzala — saying it took guts to put their names on the line to run in the election. tom.collins@metroland.com

Although it was a day after Thanksgiving, Pierre Poilievre spent much of Tuesday night giving thanks. The Conservative candidate thanked his campaign manager, his long-time girlfriend, his volunteers, and most importantly, he thanked all the voters who re-elected him in the riding of NepeanCarleton. With 229 of the polls reporting by press time, Poilievre had 56.5 per cent, easily outdistancing the first runner-up, Liberal candidate Ed Mahfouz, who had 22.9 per cent. “It’s an overwhelming result,” Poilievre told This Week, moments after his victory speech. “More voters of Nepean-Carleton gave me more votes than I hoped for or expected.” Poilievre arrived to his campaign party at the Cedarhill Golf and Country Club a few minutes earlier to chants of “Pierre, Pierre.” He told the more than 100 supporters that it was them
who are the backbone of this country, and promised he “will work hard, get results and tell it like it is.” After his speech, he shook the hands of supporters and received many congratulatory hugs before being handed a Corona. Poilievre said his first order of business is to catch up on all the mail that may have accumulated during the campaign before getting down to big tasks, such as working on the StrandherdArmstrong bridge that will connect Barrhaven to Riverside South. Poilievre, who was first elected in 2004, has now won his third straight term in Nepean-Carleton. Overall, the Conservatives won 143 seats, up by 19 seats, which Poilievre credited to Canadians being happy with the party’s approach to low taxes and their plan to fight crime. The crowd at the golf club watched the election results carefully, cheering when Conservatives won a riding, and jeering when the Liberals won one. Some of the loudest cheers came when it was announced that Green party leader Eliz-
