Doctor urges 'due diligence' for meat recall NATHAN JAHN WEEKENDER STAFF

YOU CALL THIS CLEAN? Nepean-Carleton MPP Lisa MacLeod shows the rust-coloured muck left on her hands after handling the water filter, which was in a Lynnwood resident's filtration system for two weeks. Executive Assistant Wendy Noble holds the urine-coloured water coming from residents' taps. Those most at risk are the elderly, the very young, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems. The extrapolated incidences from those numbers, for Canada, are 298 new cases annually. But, it must be stressed, that number lacks any hard evidence and may be skewed. Maple Leaf voluntarily began the recall with a small list, but then expanded the recall for Establishment 97B (the name of the plant, and the way to identify meats processed, thereby checking for that number beside the serial code) to encompass all meats shipped from the plant. The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Michael McCain, issued an apology through the popular user-driven website,
YouTube. "Tragically, our products have been linked to illness and loss of life. To those people who are ill, and to the families who have lost loved ones, I offer my deepest and sincerest sympathies", said McCain in a press conference, on Aug. 23. "Words cannot begin to express our sadness for their pain." The CFIA is closely monitoring the recall and factorycleanup procedures as Maple Leaf tries to salvage the situation even as the number of confirmed cases rises. All of the information CFIA has gathered on the recall, including a full list of recalled items, can be found at www. inspection.gc.ca. 182000
With the deadly listeriosis outbreak ravaging Ontario, the question remains: How does it affect local residents? Calls to local grocers and fast-food outlets in Ottawa South and North Grenville, were consistently referred to their bosses at head office. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) lists Tim Hortons and McDonald’s as having had Maple Leaf products on their menus — roast beef and sliced turkey breast respectively — which were included in the company's voluntary recall more than a week ago. The local Tim Hortons outlets have posted signs to confirm they are not selling any recalled products. Nepean-Carleton MPP Lisa MacLeod recently distributed a release from the province’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. David Williams, which provides doctors with the information they need to give to residents: "exercise diligence" when identifying items that are part of Maple Leaf’s massive meat recall. "Residents should follow whatever the federal government and provincial officers of health are saying — Be careful," said MacLeod. "My family has stayed away from packaged meats. But it’s a great opportunity to check out your local butchers or go to the grocery store and ask." With the death toll ascribed to the strain of listeriosis directly linked to the Maple Leaf plant in Toronto sitting at 15 at press time, another six were suspected of the tainted meat being an "underlying or contributing cause." Listeriosis strikes 2,500 residents of the United States annually, according to statistics from the Division of Bacterial and Mycotic Diseases and the US Centers for Disease Control. But when you break the numbers down, that’s not even 0.1 per cent of the American population. However, an estimated 500 of those are fatal, meaning that 20 per cent of listeriosis victims die. It has "recently been recognized as an important publichealth problem in the United States," says CDC’s website.
