Forty years ago, Brian Walters, prominent barrister, writer and environment advocate, rafted down the Franklin River, joining the blockade to save a key wilderness area in Tasmania. He had previously worked on the campaign for the Tasmanian Wilderness Society and given early legal advice. The campaign’s success led to a greater awareness of environmental issues in Australia, and the eventual formation of the Greens – now Australia’s third most popular political party. Brian will share an overview of how the campaign played out, along with a personal perspective of the journey.
