WilmingtonYouthDevelopmentProgramProvides OpportunitiesforSuccess

In2022,NewCastleCountyVoTechenteredintoauniquepartnership withtheCityofWilmingtontotrainyoungpeoplewhilerehabilitating Cityneighborhoods Theinitialgoalwastorecruit20-25Wilmington residents,ages16-24,andprovidethemwiththetrainingandskills necessarytocontributetothevitalityoftheirhometown Mayor MichaelPurzyckipledgedtousepartoftheCity'sNeighborhood RedevelopmentPlanfundstopayfortheNCCVTLiaisontothe programaswellasanyclassroominstruction,vocationaltraining, certifications,supplies,andmore.

Initsfirstyearofimplementation,theprogramhasbeenaconfirmed success.Morethan20Cityyouthearnedatotalof$80,000whilealso learningskilledtradesandacademiccredits.Studentsareconnected withemployermentorsforprojectstorestoreandenhanceproperties onWilmington'sEastSide.

Thankstothegenerous supportofWhiting-Turner ContractingandEDiS,two NCCVTstudentsreceivedthe prestigiousGabeCoxMemorial Scholarshipthisyear:Alizabeth CombsfromHodgsonand FlavioMelquiades-Bahena fromDelcastle.

Bothstudentshavebeen involvedwiththeACE Mentoringprogram,inwhich studentsareintroducedto careeropportunitiesin architecture,construction, engineering,buildingdesign, andrelatedfields.Thestudents workdirectlywithprofessionals whovolunteertheirtime. Includedareclassroom lessons,hands-onexperiences, fieldtrips,andafinalteam project.
