About the Keynote Speaker Terrell L. Strayhorn, Ph.D., is professor of Higher Education and director of the Center for Higher Education Enterprise at The Ohio State University. Dr. Strayhorn serves as senior research associate at Ohio State’s Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race & Ethnicity and holds appointments in several other university departments and institutes, including the Todd A. Bell National Resource Center on the African American Male and the Criminal Justice Research Center. His work focuses on major policy issues in education, including student access and achievement, equity and diversity. Dr. Strayhorn has authored and edited a number of publications, including “College Students’ Sense of Belonging” (2012) and “Theoretical Frameworks in College Student Research” (2013). Prior to joining the faculty at Ohio State, he was special assistant to the provost at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and founding director of the UTK Center for Higher Education Research & Policy. Dr. Strayhorn received the National Science Foundation’s prestigious CAREER grant for his five-year project titled “Investigating the Critical Junctures: Strategies that Broaden Minority Male Participation in STEM Fields.” In 2011, “Diverse: Issues in Higher Education” included Dr. Strayhorn in its list of Top Emerging Scholars. He is a member of the board of directors for the Association for the Study of Higher Education and The Thurgood Marshall College Fund. A native of Virginia, Dr. Strayhorn received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia, a master’s degree in educational policy from the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia, and a doctorate in higher education from Virginia Tech. He is pursuing his law degree at Ohio State’s Moritz College of Law.
