ARTS Film Noir Series Announced

The Old Theater in Oriental announces a new film series with four classic detective films playing Sunday nights in October. The wellknown film noir examples revolve around private eye characters with tough-guy attitudes. The films include John Huston’s “The Maltese Falcon,” Howard Hawks’ “The Big Sleep,” Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo” and Roman Polanski’s “Chinatown.” Sight and Sound, an international film magazine recently polled 846 film critics, programmers, academics and distributors who chose Hitchcock’s film “Vertigo” as the top film of all time. This is a major achievement, beating out Orson Welles’ “Citizen Kane” for the first time. Of the many American films involving private and public detectives, the most praised films are identified as film noir, a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime

Many critics suggest that these films were a metaphorical suggestion of society’s evils, with a strong inclination of moral conflict, emptiness and sense of injustice. ECU Chamber Trio Goes Classical

The performance of the ECU Chamber Trio at Oriental’s Old Theater at 7:30pm on Friday, Oct. 19 brings joy and delight to fans of classical music. The performance is presented by the Pamlico Musical Society, a nonprofit organization bringing quality musical entertainment, enrichment and education to Pamlico County. Cellist Emanuel Gruber, formerly the principal cellist of the Israeli Chamber Orchestra, is a celebrated virtuoso whose cello mastery has earned awards from Tel Aviv to St. Petersburg.
