pine knoll shores A sanctuary for turtles, birds and trees, Pine Knoll Shores is the midway point between Atlantic Beach and Indian Beach on Bogue Banks and is a peaceful community incorporated into the saltwater-kissed maritime forest. In 1917, Mrs. Alice G. Hoffman purchased a majority of the land on Bogue Banks extending from Atlantic Beach to the Emerald Isle town line. A local historian has documented that in 1935, all the land acquired by Hoffman passed to a trustee by the name of Llewellyn Phillips and in 1939 it went to John Marshall Mathias, who served as trustee for four children of Theodore Roosevelt (who were also

relatives of Alice Hoffman). In 1950 Mathias resigned as trustee and the Roosevelt children took over the trust and property. Their priorities for minimal disturbance of the island dynamics in its development have made Pine Knoll Shores one of the state’s most ecologically sensitive towns. A historic marker on Hwy 58 at the intersection leading to the NC Aquarium identifies the site of one of the first landings in the New World by Florentine explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano. Another notable landmark is the shipwreck Pevensy located just offshore from where the Iron Steamer Pier once stood. For more information visit townofpks.com.

atlantic beach Of the five towns along Bogue Banks, none have been around longer than the perpetually popular Atlantic Beach. Whether you look to the Oceanana Fishing Pier, the beaches or amusement rides of days gone by, Atlantic Beach has been a heralded place of fun in the sun for surf and sand lovers alike since the early 1900s. While the landscapes have changed with the removal of the town’s famed “Circle” of music venues and amusement rides, as well as two of its fishing piers, Atlantic Beach still offers numerous public beach accesses, seaside shopping, dining, fishing tournaments like the Atlantic Beach King Mackerel Tournament and annual festivals such as the Carolina Kite Fest.

Before the bridge from Morehead City was built, guests would be ferried to Atlantic Beach to enjoy a day of fun and frolicking along the seashore. Dance halls and beachfront boardwalks soon sprung up, making Atlantic Beach the place to be. Long-time residents and visitors are sure to recall evenings at “The Circle,” an area now coming into its own as “The Grove.” Filled with treasures like Hoophole Creek, a beautiful nature trail tucked away in the maritime forest, it’s the seaside community’s quaint and casual ambiance that leads so many to call the beach their home … or their home-awayfrom-home. fort macon state park Much of the Crystal Coast’s coveted Civil War history is protected and preserved within the walls of Fort Macon, the five-sided Civil War fortress which today stands as proudly as in the 1800s. Garrisoned in 1834, Fort Macon was seized from Union forces by the Confederate Army at the start of the Civil War. But in 1862, Union forces recaptured the oceanside fortress, giving the North control of the entire North Carolina coast. Interestingly enough, General Robert E. Lee was stationed at Fort Macon as a young Army officer. The fort’s captivating history, impressive restoration and a calendar of special programs, including Civil War reenactments, make Fort Macon State Park one of North Carolina’s

most visited state parks. Once inside, be sure to visit the museum, bookstore, or listen to interesting audio programs in the Commandant’s and Enlisted Men’s Quarters, the WWII Barracks and the Gunpowder Magazine. The Coastal Education Visitors’ Center highlights this major attraction. The fort is the focal point of Fort Macon State Park, which encompasses 385 acres of pristine beach, dunes and maritime forest just east of Atlantic Beach. At the park’s beach access, visitors can fish from rock jetties or park at the bathhouse area for swimming and summer concessions. The park opens daily at 8am and closes at sunset. Fort hours are 9am-5:30pm daily. Details: 252726-3775.

It’s what’s on the inside and the outside that counts. Welcome to a place that cares as much about what a sandwich is on as what’s on a sandwich. Welcome to a place that believes a sauce should complement the ingredients in a sandwich, not cover them up. Welcome to a place that knows a sandwich should be made the moment it’s ordered, and not a second earlier. Welcome to Panera Bread®. It begins with fresh dough, never frozen, baked by expert bakers the very day your sandwich is made. Stone-milled rye, honey wheat, sesame semolina, over 20 different kinds. They all come out of the oven piping hot to fill the air with rich smells that will linger throughout the morning. To be served and savored all day long, until closing time when we share the day’s unsold bread with community shelters and food pantries, and start baking new bread fresh for tomorrow. So when you come in for a Chicken Caesar sandwich, the all-natural antibiotic-free chicken isn’t the only thing you notice. Nor is the AsiagoParmesan cheese or flavorful Caesar dressing. When you take your first bite, you’ll notice something else. The freshly baked three cheese bread that just came out of the oven this morning. Which isn’t just important because it holds your sandwich together. It’s important because it was as carefully chosen and thoughtfully created as the ingredients on the inside.

wish you were here Kayak for the Warriors Enjoy a day and evening of fun, food and excitement with family and friends in the beach town of Pine Knoll Shores for its third Kayak for the Warriors event. Held Saturday, June 12, Kayak for the Warriors is a fundraiser for the worthy Hope for Warriors. A reception with music and refreshments will be held to honor Wounded Warriors from 5:30-7pm on Friday, June 11, at Pine Knoll Shores town hall. This year, in addition to the kayak race, paddle board race and Family Fun Race, there will be a 5K and 10K Bicycle Fun Race which kicks off race day at 8:30am, starting and ending at McNeill Park on Oakleaf Drive. A $10 donation includes the registration fee and lunch. Participants should arrive at 8am and are encouraged to decorate their bicycles. Residents are also urged to celebrate the day by displaying the American Flag and decorating their homes. The official festivities start at Garner Park on Oakleaf Drive at 10am with a 3.2-mile kayak race and paddle board race through the Pine Knoll Shores’ canal. A $40 donation includes registration fee, T-shirt and lunch. The Family Fun Race starts at 10:30am. Using any paddle-worthy vessel, participants will complete a short race course from Garner Park out into the sound and back. Children 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult. A $20 donation includes the registration fee and lunch. Although most of the action surrounds Garner Park, there are many great viewing areas along the route, including McNeill Park, Brock Basin, Hall Haven and Ramsey Park. After all the racers return to shore, there will be an awards ceremony and lunch. Spectators and guests are all welcome to join in the festivities, including the silent auction. A hot dog lunch with all the trimmings will be served from 11:30am-1:00pm for $5 per person. Race registration forms are available at the Bogue Banks Public Library, PKS town hall and online at kayakforthewarriors.org. For addi-

Don’t Be Afraid of the Water Whether you are in the market for a boat, or simply want to dream of what the future may (hopefully) bring, the 3rd annual Morehead City Family Boating and In-Water Boat Show is the ideal place to do a little browsing. The show takes over the Morehead City waterfront May 14-16, showcasing boat exhibitors, marine products and services, new and used power boats, outdoor gear, fishing tackle, guides and outfitters. Sponsored by the Downtown Morehead City Revitalization Association, this year’s offering includes a pirate treasure hunt for the youngsters on Sugarloaf Island and the ARTrageous art festival, an effort combined with the Arts Council of Carteret County. Kids that aren’t quite ready to shop for their first boat haven’t been left out. The new treasure hunt offers free ferry rides from the Morehead City waterfront to Sugarloaf Island, where adventure awaits in the form of treasure and pirates. Scheduled for 1:30pm on

Saturday, the cost is $5 and allows parents and children to hunt for treasure, interact with pirates and come back to shore with a goodie bag. For more information on the boat show or treasure hunt, or to participate, contact Stephanie Slocum at 252-808-0440.

simulators, vendors, entertainment, games, food, a business expo and plenty of activities for the young and the young at heart. Of course it’s the acrobatics in the sky that everyone truly comes to see – and this year there will be no disappointments. The Blue Angels, ambassadors for the US Navy and the US Marine Corps, return to headline the festivities much to the delight of visitors. This year, they’ll be joined by the Black Daggers, the US Army Special Ops parachute demonstration team; the amazing acrobatics of the Red Eagle; Otto the Helicopter; Panchito, a historic B-25 bomber used during World War II; the Geico 300s, an aerobatic plane constructed out of carbon fiber composites; and much more. On Friday, May 21, the air show will host the state’s only night show, featuring afterburners, rocket trucks, aerial pyrotechnics, skydivers, plus a wall of flame – all culminating in the area’s largest fireworks display. Gates for the night show open at 5pm and flying begins at twilight. Saturday and Sunday feature full day shows, with a large variety of military and civilian aerobatic demonstrations and dozens of historic and modern military static displays. The base gates open at 8am and flying runs from approximately 10:30am to 4:30pm. The Blue Angels, as always, will be the grand finale each day. While all events are free, including parking, there are a limited number of box seats and chalet tickets available. For pricing and availability, call 866-WINGS-NC or visit cherrypointairshow.com.

Fire in the Sky North Carolina’s largest air show will take to the skies over Carteret and Craven counties May 21-23, featuring some of the world’s most talented pilots and showcasing some of the military’s most powerful toys. The event includes static displays, ride

Publick Day in the Colonies During Colonial days, when a judge came to town there was much ado. The quiet town square would quickly turn into a small marketplace as the townspeople brought out their wares in hopes of catching the attention

of those there to conduct official business. The tradition continues each year at the Beaufort Historic Site on Turner Street as vendors take over the grounds once more, offering guests a little bit of everything. Look for plants, jewelry, antiques, herbs, art, glassware, books and more. The Beaufort Historical Association often has historic artisans on hand offering Living History demonstrations creating a true marketplace atmosphere. This year’s event runs from 9am-4pm on Saturday, April 17. The Mattie King Davis Art Gallery will be participating in this year’s sale with a YART Sale (a yard sale for art), where local and regional artists will be selling dramatically discounted works. Inside the gallery, will be the exhibit of featured artist, Judy Crane. Judy is also the featured artist for the Beaufort Wine and Food Weekend, April 21-25. Visitors to Publick Day will also have the opportunity to hop aboard the vintage English double-decker bus for the lively narrated tour of the Beaufort Historic District. The bus will run at 11am and 1:30pm, and tickets, which cost $8 for adults and $4 for children, will be available at the Welcome Center at 130 Turner Street. For more information, please call the Beaufort Historical Association at 252-728-5225, or visit beauforthistoricsite.org. Details: Patricia Suggs, 252-728-5225.

Fighting the Blues Many may recognize the Swansboro Rotary Fishing Tournament Series, which marks a 30th anniversary milestone this year, as the Swansboro Rotary King Mackerel Bluewater Fishing Tournament. But it’s older – maybe a little wiser – and this year, organizers have

mixed it up a bit by dividing the event, with marlin fishing in the spring and mackerel in October. The Bluewater portion of the series offers the second blue marlin tournament of the annual Governor’s Cup Billfishing Series, which also includes tournaments like the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament and the Barta Boys and Girls Club Billfish Tournament. Events for the Swansboro tourney begin Friday, May 28 with registration from noon until 9pm, a sponsor’s party at 5pm and a captains party at 9pm. Lines go in the water on Saturday and Sunday, with scales opening at Casper’s Marina in Swansboro and Big Rock Landing in Morehead City at 3pm. The competition comes to a close with an awards ceremony Sunday night, beginning at 7:30pm. For more information, visit kingbluewater. com.

Painting for Haiti When Haiti was ravished earlier this year by an earthquake, members of the Beaufort Sister Cities were haunted by a memory – at one point, didn’t a member of the group identify a Beaufort in Haiti? The answer was yes … and with a little research, the organization was able to locate Good Samaritan School in Beaufort, Haiti, some 100 miles north of Port au Prince, with 400 children in grades 1st through 6th. Beaufort Sister Cities, Inc. is once again looking for a few good artists – but this year, they’re also looking to Haiti in hopes of making a difference. The group will hold its annual mural competition from 8am-4pm on Saturday, May 8, at the Beaufort Arts Center, located in the old Masonic Lodge on Turner Street. The theme this year is Caribbean Connections, with a new twist. This year, the Haitian school will be the recipient of any profit the group earns from selling the winning mural along with matching funds from Sister City locations in Europe. The cost is $20 to participate in the contest. Guests may observe the artists at work at no charge. A reception and the announcement of the winner is scheduled for 5pm. For additional information, visit beaufortsistercities.org or e-mail beaufortsistercities@ gmail.com.

rachel carson reserve Visitors looking for a “greener” vacation will quickly find the Crystal Coast is a natural wonder, teeming with wildlife. And there’s perhaps no better place to discover this than the Rachel Carson Reserve, a component of the North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve. The breathtakingly beautiful area is a series of islands referred to by locals as Bird Shoal or Carrot Island and lies just across from the Beaufort waterfront. It can only be accessed by boat and lucky explorers might spot a few of the beautiful Carrot Island wild ponies congregating along the shore. The 2,650-acre reserve is a favorite place for hiking, shelling and exploring the natural and human processes that affect coastal areas. The site was named for Rachel Carson, the

famous scientist and author who conducted research on the island’s coastal habitat. Comprised of salt marshes, tidal flats, eelgrass beds and salt flats, the area is a favorite place for beachcombing, swimming and sunbathing, but is only accessible by boat. While there, you’ll spot water birds, wild horses and other natural attractions. More than 200 species of birds have been sighted on the reserve and a checklist of these feathered-friends is available. The site is an important feeding area for Wilson’s plovers in the summer and piping plovers in the winter. The shrub thicket of the area’s middle marsh supports an egret and heron rookery. Guided nature tours are a seasonal delight for visitors. For more information call 252-838-0883 or nccoastalreserve.net.

morehead city With its famous boat-to-table seafood restaurants, one of North Carolina’s two state ports and a charter fishing fleet that brings the waterfront to life each afternoon, Morehead City is a true demonstrator of coastal flair. Morehead City is an ever-growing community with the busy state port as its cornerstone, where military ships and freighters from all over the world can be seen coming and going on any given day. Downtown, visitors and residents enjoy fresh seafood and other fine fare at well-known restaurants. Art galleries, gift shops and other offerings make downtown Morehead City a residents’ and visitors’ paradise; however, recent pushes to breathe more life into the downtown district have set an even higher horizon for this burgeoning coastal town. You’ll be delighted with all the unique places you’ll discover, as well as the sight of coastal

birds and charter boats all coming in with the day’s catch. Enjoy an evening cruise, spend the day fishing or if you’re looking for more adventure, Morehead City’s dive shops invite you to explore the waters of the Crystal Coast, which has been rated one of the best dive destinations in the US. There’s also plenty of excitement to be found on the Morehead City waterfront each June as the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, now more than 50 years old, brings a week of fishing, fun and big money that consistently tops the $1 million mark. In the fall Morehead City is abuzz with Ferris wheels, amusement rides, live music and all the seafood you can handle during the North Carolina Seafood Festival, held annually the first weekend in October. the history place For history buffs of all ages, the Crystal Coast’s past is perfectly presented and anchored (in a big way) at The History Place museum on Arendell Street in downtown Morehead City. Self-paced walking tour exhibits include Native American artifacts, awardwinning carved decoys, vintage clothing, period furniture, military memorabilia, coastal artwork and more. Enjoy an array of exhibits with such titles as the History of Shrimp Boats, an Antique Doll Collection, the History of Civil War Weapons and Tuscarora Indians. Also displayed is the carriage in which local Civil War spy Emeline Pigott rode when captured. Pigott carried more items of importance in her petticoat than would fit in any modern-day suitcase. For genealogy and Civil War buffs, the Jack Spencer Goodwin Library houses more than

6,000 publications and an extensive county photo file. The Civil War collections are especially notable. The Museum Store offers unique gifts and a wide variety of local books and merchandise for all ages. Publications feature the Civil War, black history, pirates, poetry and local cookbooks. Nautical ornaments, jewelry, pottery, Civil War collectibles and children’s items are also featured. Visit the tea room inside the History Place and enjoy a light lunch. Each November, The History Place hosts the annual Antique-A-Thon where appraisers evaluate local items aged to perfection. It also hosts the popular Lunch with a Dash of History series, trips and other special programs. Admission is free. For more information call 252-247-7533 or visit thehistoryplace.org.

beaufort Visitors to Beaufort (pronounced “Bo-furt) are quick to discover the town is a special place on the Crystal Coast. As the third-oldest town in North Carolina, those who walk down Beaufort’s streets find a history that’s blossomed with sailing, fishing and architecture since the town’s incorporation in 1722. History lives in the centuries-old restored homes, beautiful churches, on the Beaufort Historic Site, at the NC Maritime Museum, along the waterfront and even across the water in the form of Carrot Island’s wild ponies. Originally called Fish Towne, Beaufort’s intriguing history is based on both land and sea, including famous patriots like Otway Burns and the notorious Edward Teach, also known as Blackbeard. The believed wreckage of the pirate’s prized flagship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge, was discovered more than 10 years ago in Beaufort Inlet and artifacts from this shipwreck are a crown jewel of the NC Maritime Museum’s many exhibits. Scenic strolls along Beaufort’s bustling waterfront are highlighted by fabulous shopping, fine dining and

fiery red sunsets. Tour and charter boats, plus a wealth of area artisans help make Beaufort a favorite spot to spend time. Noted events include the Wine and Food Weekend in April, the NC Maritime Museum Wooden Boat Show in May, the Beaufort Old Homes and Gardens Tour in June and the Carteret County Arts and Craft Coalition Show and Sales on Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends. nc maritime museum From towering pirate ships to modest hand-built skiffs, the NC Maritime Museum on Beaufort’s Front Street is the place to find a glimpse of North Carolina’s boating history. The Crystal Coast was built around its maritime heritage and the NC Maritime Museum serves as a vessel for passing that information and tradition from generation to generation. If the name Blackbeard the Pirate sends shivers down your spine (or at least sparks your curiosity), the NC Maritime Museum is a must-see attraction. Artifacts from the vessel believed to be Blackbeard’s flagship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge, are on permanent display at the museum, raised from the nearby shipwreck. cape lookout national seashore Best known for its towering lighthouse covered in black and white diamonds, the Cape Lookout National Seashore is a 56-mile stretch of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, spanning from Ocracoke Inlet to Beaufort Inlet. Three pristine barrier islands make up the national seashore – North Core Banks, South Core Banks and Shackleford Banks. Accessible only by private boat or ferry, this incredible ribbon of sand hosts unparalleled fishing, shelling and a working lighthouse. The undeveloped cape allows for true-to-nature camping, features a renovated lighthouse keeper’s quarters, a boardwalk to the beach, daily ranger programs and facilities in summer. There are no guarded beaches or maintained roads, as to preserve the seashore’s pristine and serene nature. For those seeking to discover the cape’s history, remnants of old gun mounts are visible on an oceanside walk between the rock jetty and Cape Point. Many visitors come to the National Seashore to view the black and white diagonal checkerboard-patterned Cape Lookout Lighthouse. A landmark since 1859, it is now maintained by the National Park Service, which is working to rehabilitate the lighthouse tower to allow for daily public access. The recently remodeled Lighthouse Visitor Center, found near the South Core Banks ferry dock, has a shaded pavilion and new boardwalk connecting it to the area adjacent to the Keepers’ Quarters, which has been renovated and includes new exhibits. The Cape Lookout Light Station Visitor Center and Keepers’ Quarters Museum is open to the public 9am to 5pm, April through November. Exhibits focus on lighthouse history and early shipwrecks and rescues. A bookstore features items related to the National Seashore and also carries bottled water and insect repellent. In addition to its lighthouse, Cape Lookout National Seashore includes adjacent Shackleford Banks, site of the extinct fishing village All visitors should remember this is a remote, natural territory with no fast food, limited fresh water access and no lifeguards. Visitors and campers, remember to take whatever is needed to eat or drink, sun and insect lotions, hats and shoes.

A visitor center located on Harkers Island is open year round from 9am-5pm (except for Dec. 25-Jan. 1). Exhibits tell the story of island communities, the Life Saving Service and other local history. An indoor theater offers two short films on a rotating schedule, and the visitor center bookstore features books, tapes, videos and children’s items related to Cape Lookout National Seashore. down east When the pace has slowed, sunlight is reflecting off the marsh and old wooden boats peacefully bob up and down in the water, chances are you’ve just entered Down East. Found east of Beaufort along Highway 70, Down East encompasses the communities of Atlantic, Bettie, Cedar Island, Davis, Gloucester, Harkers Island, Lola, Marshallberg, Otway, Sea Level, Smyrna, Stacy, Straits and Williston. Each of these communities is unique and rich in its maritime heritage and beauty, which was recognized in Oct. 2009 when the stretch of Hwy 70 from Merrimon Road to Cedar Island was designated a National Scenic Byway as part of the Outer Banks Scenic Byway. On Harkers Island you’ll find the National Park Service Visitor Center offering information and a park for viewing the Cape Lookout Lighthouse. There are also marinas and accommodations, plus ferries and charter

boat services available for visitors hoping to see the Cape Lookout National Seashore first hand. Back on Highway 70, many people just passing through make their way down to Sea Level, where they join up with Highway 12 and trek to the county’s farthest-east community of Cedar Island and hop on a ferry to Ocracoke Island.

core sound waterfowl museum If one word could sum up the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center’s mission, that word would be “preservation.” Found at the end of Island Road in Harkers Island, the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum strives to promote and preserve the Down East region’s valued heritage by showcasing the talents and skills of Down East residents, focusing on decoy carving, boatbuilding, storytelling, oral histories, local writers, traditional music, food, hunting, fishing and other skills. The goal is to pass these community strengths on to the next generation and educate residents and visitors about the crucial role played by all natural

communities. The museum works with partners such as the NC Arts Council, the National Park Service, NC Travel and Tourism, Our State magazine and others to promote itself as a major heritage tourism destination in eastern North Carolina. Many heritage programs and demonstrations are offered throughout the year, an additional 8,000 sq.ft. was completed in Oct. 2009 for gallery, observation tower and gift shop, and the museum’s Core Sound Waterfowl Weekend is not to be missed. Museum hours are Monday - Saturday 10am-5pm, Sunday 2-5pm. Admission is free. Details are available by calling: 252-728-1500, coresound.com.

Beaufort Welcomes 36th annual Wooden Boat Show The artistry and practicality of the wooden boat will be celebrated May 1 in Beaufort as the NC Maritime Museum launches its annual Wooden Boat Show. In its 36th year, the Wooden Boat Show is the largest undertaking of the NC Maritime Museum – bringing more than 5,000 visitors to the quiet tree-lined streets of historic Beaufort. The little fishing hamlet, if only for a few days, will become home to 60-70 small wooden beauties. Beginning Sunday, April 25, boat rides will be offered from 1 to 4 pm daily as the museum gears up for the big event. The rides are free, however, a $5 donation is suggested and all funds collected will go toward the ongoing sailing program at the Maritime Museum. It’s Friday night, however, when the weekend’s pace is set with the Watercraft Center Party, a reception slated to kick off the show. Scheduled from 5:30 to 7pm, the party includes live music and light hors d‘oeuvres. Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased at the museum. The wooden boats are on display from 10am to 4pm Saturday, interspersed with demonstrations of traditional skills, educational activities, boat models and the annual Boat Building Challenge, which gives teams of two builders four hours to complete a 12-foot skiff. While it can be fun to watch the craftsmen at work, it’s often much more fun when it comes time to test the vessel’s seaworthiness. Sailboat races

are planned for 11am and 3pm and free boat rides will once again be offered between the races. Festivities roll to a close with two ticketed events. From 5-7pm a post-show reception is planned in the Watercraft Center. Tickets are $5 per person. The festivities then move into the museum’s auditorium from 7-9pm for the dinner and awards program. The cost to attend is $18. To learn more about the event, to register a boat for the show or to purchase tickets for the parties and fanfare, call 252-728-7317 or visit ncmaritimemuseum.org. emerald isle If you’re looking for a modern-day beach town with old-fashioned family values, you’ll delight in Emerald Isle. Located on the western end of Bogue Banks, its warm hospitality and hometown charm have made the town a family vacation tradition for generation after generation. Interestingly enough, this area of Bogue Banks remained largely uninhabited until the 1950s when it was purchased by a group of developers for what now seems like an unbelievably small amount of money. While contemplating their investment, the developers hired a consultant who was flown over the area for a visual

survey. Viewing the lush green maritime forest set against the sparkling blue-greens of the Atlantic Ocean, he suggested “Emerald Isle.” Emerald Isle pays tribute to that Irish namesake each March with its St. Patrick’s Festival, one of the Crystal Coast’s biggest spring events. Vacation attractions include miniature golf, movies, fishing, bike paths that span the town, natural areas such as Emerald Woods Park and of course, swimming, sunning, sandcastle building and sensational shopping and dining. swansboro & cape carteret Finding hills among North Carolina’s coastal towns is not easy … unless you’re in Swansboro that is. Perched along the beautiful White Oak River on Highway 24, between Cape Carteret and Jacksonville, Swansboro is a town with a unique hilly landscape that seems to cradle the historic buildings in its downtown district. Visit the historic downtown waterfront for a day of antiquing, shopping, charter fishing, kayaking and delightful dining, or take a look at historic markers to learn about Otway Burns and other local legends. A lovely way to see the Swansboro area is to bicycle along the

Swansboro Bicentennial Bicycle Trail, rent a kayak, or just park downtown for a leisurely walk along the waterfront. Visit swansboro-nc.org for more details. As you head from Swansboro to Emerald Isle you’ll discover a treasure trove of antique shops, kayak shops and more in Cedar Point. Just before the bridge to Emerald Isle at the intersection of Highways 24 and 58, Cape Carteret welcomes visitors with golf courses, restaurants, shopping and more. Tucked away behind the trees, beautiful residential properties lie along the Intracoastal Waterway on Bogue Sound.

hammocks beach state park Kayaking and canoeing, camping, fishing, picnicking, bird watching, swimming and strolling along quiet beaches are just some of the enjoyable pastimes found at Hammocks Beach State Park, south of Swansboro off Highway 24. On the mainland and on the state park’s Bear Island, rangers offer scheduled seasonal nature programs and talks focusing on the area’s fascinating natural features and history.

62 www.nccoast.com

Getting to Bear Island can only be done by boat or the park’s 2.5-mile ferry. On the way, you can view wetland inhabitants, including graceful herons and egrets. On the island a half-mile trail travels through a magnificent sand dune to the beach. Camping sites, hiking trails and a bathhouse are also available to guests. Bear Island and Huggins Island (also in Hammocks Beach State Park and of great interest because of its lowland marsh system and Civil War history) have interesting stories to tell so be sure and inquire. Hammocks Beach State Park is open 8am until 6pm daily, September through May, and 8am until 7pm daily, June through August. The park ferry operates daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day, except during inclement weather. For more information call 910-326-4881 or visit http://ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/habe/ main.php.

indian beach & salter path The small coastal town of Indian Beach lies in the middle of Bogue Banks. Interestingly enough, Indian Beach surrounds the village of Salter Path on both the east and west, leading a local historian to note that the Crystal Coast can boast its own “twin cities.” The town comes together as a cozy waterfront community that attracts an annual swell of vacationers searching for their own little corner of this peaceful paradise. Play on the beach, kayak, jet ski, watch shrimp boats bring in their catch or embrace your inner child with a day of mini-golf, gokarts and bumper boats. Visitors find a variety of accommodations, including condominiums, resorts, beach homes and more. The area’s main public beach access offers restrooms, showers and picnic tables, and features a long, winding boardwalk that meanders through forested dunes down to a beautiful, wide beach. Details: indianbeach. org. Nestled between both arms of Indian Beach, the village of Salter Path emerged in the late 1800s when local fishermen would carry barrels of mullet from the beach to the sound to trade with a boat offering sweet potatoes and corn. Over the years, a permanent path was worn beside Riley Salter’s house; hence the community’s name. Take

advantage of the locals’ knowledge of island history and enjoy the area’s seafood markets and restaurants, or stop in to see local woodcrafters and artists working at area shops.

tee time Golf enthusiasts rave about how Eastern North Carolina suits them to a tee as soon as they discover the terrific and unique courses of the Crystal Coast. Most courses take full advantage of the area’s natural beauty and are built around maritime forests or focused near the water. When your eye’s not on the ball or focused on the hole, the Crystal Coast’s courses and their natural surroundings are a site to be seen. Spring and fall are considered two of the favorite times for golfing in the area with sunny days and cooler temps, but golfing is truly a year-round attraction in Eastern North Carolina as our terrific climate allows for play almost any time. In fact, during the winter months golfers are delighted not only by the good playing weather, but also by seasonal pricing specials and having the greens more to themselves for play at a truly relaxing pace. Most courses feature clubhouses, resident pros, well-equipped pro shops and are open to the public at great rates. All you have to do is call for a tee time. And if you’re a Crystal Coast resident and golfer, ask about the courses’ benefit tournaments held throughout the year. The community is always looking for teams and individuals for tournament play to benefit local organizations. Featured here are some of the best local courses when it comes to the Crystal Coast’s “golf coast.” Accessed from Hwy. 70 just west of Morehead City, Brandywine Bay Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-71 championship course designed among wooded areas, ponds and streams in the residential resort, Brandywine Bay. get in the groove Beaufort’s Largest Free Music Festival Returns The combination of live music, open air and a view of Taylors Creek have brought visitors to the historic Beaufort waterfront for more than 20 years in celebration the area’s largest musical event, the Beaufort Music Festival. With a lineup of more than 10 regional bands, a locals’ stage and a children’s music area, the Beaufort Music Festival returns May 7-8 with headliners The Rosebuds and Steep Canyon Rangers. Coming off one of its most successful years ever with 2009 headliner Richie Havens, organizers hope to see music lovers come back for more as the two main stages, located in the parking lot across from Clawson’s, come to life at 6pm Friday, May 7, with the Americana/ folk rock band L-Shaped Lot. Music continues at 7pm with the only local band to grace this year’s main stage, Unknown Tongues, bringing out their foot-stomping Zydeco groove, complete with accordion, pedal steel guitar and of course, the washboard. The Steep Canyon Rangers, who are set to play the famous Bonnaroo festival alongside the banjo stylings of comedian Steve Martin, are Friday night’s headliner. Continuing an acoustic groove threaded through much of this year’s festival, the Steep Canyon Rangers are an Asheville-based bluegrass band that was named Emerging Artist of the Year in 2006 by the International Bluegrass Music Association and nominated in 2008 for two more awards, including Album of the Year. The lineup on Saturday brings surf music to the stage from the Noseriders, swing from the Atomic Rhythm All Stars and reggae from Crucial Fiya, however, acoustic music lovers will not be disappointed by

acts like Mandolin Orange, Christobel and the Jons (folk/swing) and Holy Ghost Tent Revival (folk/rock). Music runs on the main stages from 12:30-10pm, with Raleigh-based headliners The Rosebuds starting at 8:30pm with a blend of indie pop and rock. While details are not complete, the Beaufort Music Festival has a full day slated at the Beaufort Historic Site (130 Turner St.), complete with a children’s area from 10am to 1pm and the Locals in the Limelight Stage from 1-7pm. For more information on this year’s event or updates on the locals’ stage, visit beaufortmusicfestival.com.
