An event designed for students to introduce college and career options in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics). It provides students with an opportunity to meet successful individuals in the STEAM career tracks and to explore numerous STEAM career fields.
Presenters from various companies and universities throughout the Maryland area will share their knowledge and experience about the STEAM professions.
The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc, has as its mission, to advocate on behalf of women of color through national and local actions and strategic alliances that promote the NCBW agenda on leadership development and gender equity in areas of Health, Education and Economic Empowerment.
The Baltimore Metropolitan Chapter of the NCBW, in partnership with the Baltimore Design School has endeavored to address gender equity by sponsoring its fourth STEAM focused event, the 2023 STEAM Career EXPO at the Baltimore Design School.
In addition, the Education Committee has also partnered with Western High School.

The theme for the 2023 STEAM Career EXPO was 'Professionals Who Tell Our Story' which provided a platform for our exhibitors to talk not only about their careers, but how they got there. The obstacles that they navigated, sources from which they pulled strength and inspiration and the road they traveled to get to where they are in their careers today.
Our exhibitors reflected the vast array of STEAM careers and the flexibility the students' design training will give them when pursuing careers of their own.

Baltimore Design School currently has 489 students actively enrolled in grades 6 - 12. On Wednesday, March 8, 2023 there were 350 students present between the Expo hours of 9:05am - 11:30am.
57 Students
73 Students 91 Students 67 Students 69 Students
Classes were called, by grade level to come down to the first floor where the expo was held. Each class spent 30 minutes engaging with exhibitors.
Students were given a feedback form to complete and submit as their class exit ticket during 5th period.
Students had a favorable experience overall. Some of the careers they would like to have exhibit next year are:
100% 99%
Exhibitors reported a positive experience
Exhibitors request to participate in 2024 EXPO
All but 1 exhibitor had a positive experience and many had great suggestions for the next EXPO:
More directional signage
Provide a more intimate setting to encourage deeper conversation. Provide a short description of each exhibitor in program.
Better prepare students for event
Clarify expectations when recruiting vendors
Include wi-fi info on program guide for vendors
Background music
Have a workshop series following the event
BDS would like to start the planning process earlier in the school year to make sure we have enough time to plan the event logistics. We are opting not to do the event on a 1/2 day, but rather on a PD day, where students might be required to come to school for opportunities such as this. We would also like to use a Google Event Planning platform so that we all can be on the same page. Chris Frederick can initiate that process.
Considering feedback from all stakeholders, we would like to move the event to the BDS cafetorium next year, or perhaps create a passport and hav exhibitors in various classrooms. We should also be able to save $ on renting tables & chairs by using the cafeteria furniture, or classroom space.
Print fewer programs next year, but include 1 sentence descriptions of each organization, so it will have an additional 4 pages (1 pg folded). Create an exhibitor invite that clearly outlines activities and encourage participants to use the link to sign up rather than a paper form. Hold a design contedt for students to create poster and program cover design.
We want to acknowledge the administrators, teachers, staff and students at the Baltimore Design School who contributed to the continued growth and success for this program.
Thank you to the members of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women - Baltimore Metro Chapter for tapping into your network of amazing STEAM professionals, and for their investment in the youth of Baltimore Design School.
