Global Education – Special Presentation and Recognition North Carolina has received national recognition for the Global Framework and Blue Print for schools and LEAs. The work of integrating curriculum, language and culture in dual or immersion programs has resulted in a more rigorous curriculum and higher expectations for students, with the students rising to meet the challenges. Global education is good for all students and should be a comprehensive component of all subjects. Educators think of the NC Education Evaluation System Standard IV: 21 Century milestones and Global Awareness. The State Board of Education recognized two LEAs for their work with Global Education.

Onslow County with NCAE principal member, Jay Strope (tall educator on the back row) of Stateside Elementary School was recognized for the staff and students being Global Ready! Onslow county educators know that relationships matter as well as community partners reaching out to support the system’s global initiatives. Having Camp Lejeune as a partner and supporter of the public schools has enhanced the global awareness within schools. Teachers implementing the standards of global schools are earning badges connected to the NC Global Blue Print.

EE Waddell Language Academy of Charlotte Mecklenburg and

NCAE Principal member, Felicia Eybl (standing next to Superintendent Johnson) was recognized as CMS received the

Prepared Global recognition.

Superintendent Ann Clark shared that CMS had students representing 183 countries and 197 languages spoken by students and staff.

Last year 1,000 students graduated with a global badge endorsement on their diploma from CMS.

Global partners participated in a panel discussion on how they support professional development for teachers and are providing resources for students and schools from digital tools to scholarships for summer exchange programs.

Participate, formerly known as VIF is a teacher exchange program that supports cultural awareness, global literacy and is a sustainable model that has supported 13,000 teaches via a V-1 visa program over the last ten years.

World View began their work in 1998 and is associated with UNC-CH. Part of the mission is helping create strong global connections for colleges/universities as well as public schools. Their Leadership Program supports principals in acclimating schools to becoming globally connected. World View embraces diversity and supports educators with relevant professional development. Currently there are 148 school partnerships in North Carolina.

Go Global NC was formally the Center for International Understanding. Go Global NC is a point of contact for global engagement in North Carolina from policy, community, education, and commerce. No one should be in isolation from the vast cultures that influence us every day. Support for the whole child is part of their mission and they meet the mission by providing resources supporting educators to ensure students are globally ready when they graduate. Currently Go Global is assisting the NC Virtual Public School and other schools in NC with teaching Mandarin to 14,000 students.

Not highlighted during the panel presentation, but a great resource for interested NCAE members is the NEA Global Learning Fellowship.

Check out the opportunity for summer exchange programs that will impact your 21 Century classrooms. Applications for summer programs are due February 28 .

CIEE of Maine works with 32 high schools in 14 LEAs in North Carolina. Schools use Global Navigator to support global connections and work.

The Center for International Education and Exchange is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization. CIEE is the country’s oldest and largest nonprofit study abroad and intercultural exchange organization.

Other actions taking place during the SBE Meeting: 1.

The State Board of Education is asked to consider approval of a new policy to ensure that public school students in North Carolina have equitable access to a full continuum of high-quality and well-coordinated socio-emotional/behavioral health services. In alignment with the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child Model (WSCC), a consistently funded and implemented model is necessary to establish effective, mental health services for children and adolescents in North Carolina. The proposed policy seeks to provide resources and professional development to educators in order to better support students who are struggling with emotional issues and/or having difficulty coping with stressful situations.

2. The SBE accepted the Consolidated Report: Dropouts, Corporal Punishment, Crime and Violence, Suspensions and Expulsions. Numbers of reportable acts of school crime, long-term suspensions, expulsions and corporal punishment events decreased in 2015-16, while the number of short-term suspensions increased. The total number of reportable acts of school crime decreased 3.2 percent from the 2014-15 school year.

Approved policies on mentor requirements connected to the state beginning teacher support program as well as providing parameters for maintaining mentor/beginning teacher relationships. LEAs shall select excellent, experienced and qualified teachers to serve as mentors. Mentors must be accomplished on 3 of the 5 Standards of NC Educator Effectives System, and if on the abbreviated observation cycle must be accomplished in Standard IV.

The SBE passed a resolution proclaiming the week of February 6-10 as National School Counselor Week. Thank you to all school counselors who help address the whole child/student and support other educators within the school community.

Congratulations to NCAE member Mike Holman of East Chapel Hill High School North Carolina CTE Teacher of the Year!

Due to pending changes at the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction several top state education leaders announced this week that they are retiring or leaving their jobs at NC DPI. The announcements came as State Superintendent Mark Johnson said he has sought ideas about "organizational and staff changes to make the department run more efficiently."

Deputy State Superintendent Rebecca Garland is the highest-ranking education official to announce that she is retiring. "I'm a very strong proponent of public education. I do think that it changes children’s lives and makes our state strong," she said. "Saying that public education is the best choice is only a mantra if we don’t work at it."

Other staff that are leaving NC DPI: Philip Price, chief financial officer Lou Ann Phillips, director of human resources Rachel Beaulieu, legislative and community affairs director Ken Gattis, senior research and evaluation coordinator The staff leaving have a wealth of education policy and knowledge, and have been supportive and collaborative with education partners, including NCAE. They will be missed! We wish them the best in their new journey.
