NORTH CAROLINA ASSOCIATION OF EDUCATORS
Volume 47, No. 6
Ready, Set, Go...N.C. General Assembly is Back in Session! State lawmakers returned to Raleigh on Wednesday, January 25, to convene session in what will be the marathon variety -- not a sprint. The first year of the biennial session begins in January and concludes generally in late summer. Governor Roy Cooper will be the first to release a budget in the next month or so, as well as deliver a speech to a joint session of lawmakers. The House and Senate will unveil their budgets later in the spring. NCAE will focus on a number of fronts including increasing per-pupil spending, a comprehensive and professional pay plan for all educators, including education support professions and administrators, and fixing a class size law passed last year that could threaten
thousands of teaching positions in the arts and physical education. There was an attempt to fix this during one of the special sessions in December, but it got tied up in the political wrangling of other
issues. Lawmakers may consider this fix in the first few weeks of session. NCAE will be working with education partners to address this issue quickly. Please view the rest of NCAE’s legislative agenda by clicking here. Members can keep up with all of the action each Friday in the Education Insight. Also, be on the lookout for NCAE-lerts and Action Alerts throughout the session. You need to be signed up with a personal e-mail address to receive these. If you are not on the e-mail list, send us your name, address, local affiliate, cell phone number, and personal e-mail address to ncaecom@ncae.org. It will be crucial for educators to be engaged in this legislative session, just like you were during the campaign.
Let Your LOVE of the Profession, Association Show During the Month of February The word LOVE will serve as a central theme on many levels throughout the month of February – love for our spouses and significant others, love for our friends, love for our families. But during this time when affection for others is celebrated and recognized, we should show LOVE for ourselves as educators and the incredible work that is being done in schools across the state each day. North Carolina’s 1.5 million public school students count on educators like you to help them be successful. Whether teaching a core subject, coaching an athletic team, or ensuring nutritious meals are served, educators’ participation in our public schools is vital. You go above and beyond with your time, you spend your own money to pay for supplies and other necessities,
and you often take time away from your own children to help a child who may not have the extra support. Whether an administrator, teacher, or education support professional, your job matters! Each role is necessary to the success of students. For those who are experienced educators, it is important to reach out, mentor, and help guide those who may be newer to the profession. Share your story on why you became an educator and the successes you have had. For those who are early educators, learn more about your professional organization and all that it has to offer, such as professional development, political advocacy, and social and economic justice. Be part of a great network of educators and make your voice heard by being engaged. As a way to express our thanks and
appreciation for all that you do, a video series titled “Love Your Association” will feature messages from NCAE leadership and some of your colleagues on the importance of members loving ourselves as educators, members loving the Association, and the Association loving our members. A different video will be available on the NCAE Web site and Facebook page each week through February. NCAE loves and thanks you for making a difference in the schools and communities you serve.
