2023
Annual Impact Report

from our CEO

2023 was a year of self-reflection and strategic planning at the NCAC. Examining our history and planning an intentional path into the future was the focus of the year-long strategic planning process which involved the NCAC Board of Directors, staff, and Stakeholders. The 2024-2026 strategic plan includes a newly minted mission statement, four strategic priorities, and organizational values that will guide our work over the next three years. A new agency logo and branding will debut in 2024 – after 38 years, we were in need of a fresh new look!

All of this work took place alongside our ongoing efforts to support and serve children and families in our community who are at risk or have suffered abuse, while training child abuse professionals nationally and internationally to better serve children and families in other communities. These two efforts, while distinct, are not separate – they work in tandem to implement best practices at the local level while leading the field in continuing to improve, grow,

Our new mission statement is a concise description of the work being done here in our community and further afield and is aspirational in reach and scope:

TO CHAMPION AND STRENGTHEN THE GLOBAL RESPONSE TO CHILD ABUSE.

the child abuse issue because it is critical for all communities and nations to address as it ultimately affects our world’s health and economy. We want to strengthen the response to child abuse in our community and communities all over the world. Our global intent starts at home and radiates across the world – we care deeply about taking care of the children and families in our community and will also empower communities throughout the world to address child abuse and its impacts on society. When we say response, we mean this in the broadest sense possible. This includes efforts to prevent abuse from happening and responding

In this report, you’ll hear from the department heads who deal with all angles of this equation and how they are working together to improve and inform the work of the agency locally, nationally, and internationally.

Your ongoing support is critical to the care of our local children and families, providing them with a quality of care and healing that is second to none, while we lead the field in best practices and cutting edge innovation.

This work can’t exist without you and your support, and we remain eternally grateful.

NATIONAL CHILDREN’S ADVOCACY CENTER 3

Work between Children and Family Services and the Professional Services Department has long been collaborative with each putting into practice what we’ve learned, in very tangible ways. Our community, our nation, our world, is better because of the work being accomplished – and we owe our thanks to you, our donors, for making it possible.

“Since before NCAC opened its doors to serve children and families we were bringing together child abuse professionals to share ideas and training in what we were doing in Huntsville and we continue to do that to this day. We provide training and support to child abuse professionals all over the world. We train child abuse professionals in how to talk to children, which is our forensic interview training. We provide a lot of thought leadership around the world around forensic interviewing.

One of the ways we work together with the training we’re doing nationally and internationally and the work we’re doing locally, is that each informs the other. When we are working on projects or ideas that are created by our national experts, we’re implementing them here. And by implementing them here we’re also refining those ideas and projects in ways that impact everybody for the positive.”

“We provide forensic interviews for children and that is their chance to give their statement about what may have happened to them. We provide medical exams, which are very much like a pediatrician visit. We provide family advocacy so the caregiver can get support and understand what the process looks like. We provide therapy based on evidence-based therapy models.

Our local practice can inform national and international work by talking about the trends we are seeing and the obstacles we’re hitting, then finding out what they’re seeing nationally. Our colleagues doing this work can take this information out into the national landscape and figure out how we can best support the work nationwide.”

“In 2023, we provided lots of different prevention services in our community. We helped kids learn what to do if they felt unsafe. We helped families learn how to provide a safe and healthy environment for their children. We talked to adults about how to prevent sexual abuse of children.

Over the years all of our services have worked together. What we’re doing with our strategic plan is bringing it all together so we’re very intentional about our cross pollination. What we’re doing internationally and nationally is really informing what we’re doing locally and what we’re doing locally is informing the work we’re doing.”
