Last March, school districts across Wisconsin were forced to close their doors as the state and the country grappled with the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Students were sent home with supplies and technology as teachers quickly shifted their focus to what would later be called “emergency remote learning.” Students, staff and families hoped it would be temporary, that schools would reopen at some point last spring. But in April, the announcement came that schools statewide would remain closed. Flash forward one year and some school districts in Wisconsin are still closed to a majority of their students, or have just recently begun a phased reopening process. But not here. As of this publication deadline, the School District of New Berlin is one of only a few districts in southeastern Wisconsin - and perhaps even the entire state - to have not only started the school year open to five-day, in-person instruction, but to have also stayed open. And while nearly 78 percent of families have chosen in-person instruction for their students, the SDNB is proud to also offer a robust virtual learning model for students who have chosen to stay home because of COVID-19 or other concerns. “The last 12 months have been like no other in education,” Superintendent Joe Garza said. “What we have accomplished during that time - thanks to the incredible support of our staff, students, families, School Board and community - is remarkable.” Continued on page 2
