Vintage Pima Basket The Pima or Akimel O'odham people have long been known for the fine quality of their basketry, prized for both its flexibility and durable construction. Designed and hand-stitched by Crystal Wabnum, this wide-brimmed heritage-style hat is 100% navy dyed wool and adjustable for size. The beaded brim utilizes size 11 Czech-style beads in a range of finishes including charlotte-cuts, opalescents, and mattes.

The earrings draw inspiration from the lush gardens and vibrant GLBTQ2S community in Portland. Thusly named, "Pansies for Portland'' are 1.5-inch rounds with sterling silver plated fingernail posts and buckskin leather backing.

Mountain Sheep Kachina

Originally gifted to young children, not as a toy, but as a tool for education, kachina dolls are known by many tribes as representations of benevolent and powerful spirits. These beings were known to walk the earth, delivering messages of guidance, and bestowing their many blessings upon those who invoke them.

Depicting the Mountain Sheep spirit known as Pang, this kachina is made from cottonwood and decorated with natural pigments. Shown here with his traditional cane and rattle, Pang was often invoked to bring rain, and–like other animal kachinas–has the power to strengthen the chance of abundant animals for hunting season. Often present at numerous Hopi ceremonies, this piece is a must-have for any collector!

Hoop Dancer Kachina

by A. Largo One of the most unique looking of all kachina is the entertainer doll – Hoop Dancer. The Hoop Dancer Kachina is present at ceremonies and celebrations to entertain the audience with its three hoops circled around its ankles, stomach, wrists, or neck.

This kachina would often be displayed at events alongside a Hopi tribe member dressed in the same garb performing hoop tricks.

The rings of the Hoop Dancer represent the circle of life: Birth, Death, and Reemergence. While this kachina is one of the few made for entertainment purpose, the performance and meaning of the hoops symbolize far more. By spinning and performing with the hoops, this Kachina is believed to connect with the spirit world and bring a glimpse of the harmony of the circle of life to all spectators.

Salmon Vessel

by Lillian Pitt This does NOT happen every day. Or ever, really. A unique collaboration between two of our finest northwest Native artists creates this stunning medley in glass. Artists Lillian Pitt (Warm Springs/Wasco/Yakama) and Dan Friday (Lummi) collaborated in summer 2019 to create a series of blown glass vessels, including this striking piece you see before you.

Depicting a salmon gill design in blue glass with a green lip, this vessel was blown and fused by Dan Friday, under the direction of honored elder and renowned artist, Lillian Pitt. Dan brought over twenty years of glassblowing experience, and Lillian brought the aluminum stencils – based on Columbia River and Plateau designs – that would be incorporated into each piece. By the end of the process the two had fused their respective visions into a brand-new series of rich, vibrantly colored vessels that reflect the time-honored traditions of both artists’ ancestors.

Lummi Bear

by Dan Friday Dan Friday is a Native of the Lummi Nation and a lifelong resident of Washington State’s Puget Sound region. Drawing from cultural themes and using modern processes, his work is contemporary in format while maintaining the traditional qualities for which Native American artistry is known.

The past two decades working with artists such as Dale Chihuly, Paul Marioni and Preston Singletary have given Friday the tools and inspiration to further hone his craft. Today, he is well-known for producing some of the finest examples of glasswork to come out of the Pacific Northwest region, and his work can be seen in prominent museums and collections around the world.

This exquisite piece is a vivid example of Friday’s work.

Here he captures the majestic spirit of Bear in breathtaking waves of amber and turquoise. Highly coveted, and hard to find, this piece was donated by Dan Friday exclusively for the NAYA Gala.

by Philbert Begay Philbert Begay is the son of noted Navajo silversmith, Richard Begay. Philbert’s jewelry is rooted in traditional Navajo designs and accented with fine, natural stones. Philbert also excels in intricate silver inlay, a technique his father is famous for. After growing up around the art of jewelry and learning many skills from his father, Philbert’s natural talent in jewelry-making has given him a name of his own.

First Nations Jewelry Set This gorgeous sterling silver cuff depicts Orca in brilliant 14k gold. Designed and carved by Patrick Seaweed, this cuff embodies the majestic strength of Orca as it leaps out of a silver sea. Patrick Seaweed is mostly a selftaught artist. He started to carve at an early age, and was influenced by his brothers, Kwakwaka'wakw artists Norman and Alfred Seaweed. His style is distinctly Nimpkish in the Kwakwaka'wakw aesthetic and has become well-known his jewelry design.

This cuff is accompanied by matching silvers earrings and brooch also accented with 14k gold. Designed by Kwakwaka'wakw Artist John Lancaster, these pieces depict silver Ravens encircling a golden Orca, invoking both the strength of Orca and the cleverness of Raven.

Hopi Overlay Necklace The Hopi tribes have long been known for their exquisite artistry, particularly in their pottery and basketwork. Since the late 19th century, the Hopi have also become master silversmiths, developing a beautiful style of silver jewelry called overlay.

Authentic Hopi overlay Jewelry is unique because it is constructed from two layers of sterling silver. A design is traced on a sheet of silver and is then painstakingly cut out with a jeweler's saw by hand.

This top design layer is then silver soldered to another sheet of silver. Next, the assembled item is hammered into its final form, contoured, and blackened to enhance the negative areas of the design.

Royston Turquoise Cuff

by Pete Johnson Pete Johnson grew up in Forest Lake, Arizona in the middle of the Navajo Reservation. He was one of ten children and his mother supported them entirely by weaving Navajo Rugs.

When he was young, Pete met Thomas Curtis, who adopted him as a son and taught Pete how to do silversmithing. Pete’s other mentor was another great Navajo silversmith, Al Joe. With those mentors in mind, Pete created this beautiful sterling silver hand hammered cuff surrounds a high grade Royston turquoise. A true statement piece for any wrist!

Tufa Cast Navajo Silver Tufa stone is a compressed volcanic ash material that is found on the Navajo reservation. It is easier to carve than sandstone and its porous surface leaves a unique texture once the metal has cooled.

Best known for his traditional designs and intricate techniques, Al Joe was born the eldest son of Rose Ann and Robert Joe in Winslow, Arizona. He learned the basics of jewelry making from his Uncle Colbert Joe, Sr. Darryl learned the art of Tufa casting from his uncle Bobby Begay. Through trial-and-error Darryl has created his own style of jewelry. Rich in Navajo culture, his hard work has brought Darryl recognition in the native art scene. The meticulous carving of the Tufa stone has brought Darryl to new levels as his jewelry has become more three dimensional.

Blackfeet Holy Lodges

by Terrance Guardipee Terrance Guardipee is an internationally acclaimed painter and ledger artist, consistently recognized for the traditional depiction of his Blackfoot heritage, as well as the contemporary innovation demonstrated in his work.

Guardipee was one of the first Native artists to revive the historical ledger art tradition. He utilizes antique documents in all of his artwork, dating from the mid-19th century, and typically originating from the historical and present Blackfeet homeland of Montana. The piece offered here is a classic example of Guardipee’s ledger art, depicting the traditional lodges of the Blackfeet, which played a central role in the daily life and culture of his people.

Rides a White Horse

by Jim Nelson Jim Nelson is a nationally acclaimed painter and storyteller of Lakota legends. Although not native by heritage, his formative years were spent in the shadow of Pine Ridge where he intermingled with his Lakota friends from an early age, coming to know their culture as well as them.

Today he paints from his heart, telling these stories and legends through the use of vibrant colors and symbolism. Everything in his work has a meaning.

Explaining the spiritual quality of his work, Nelson states: “I don’t just paint a person or animal. I paint the spirit of that person or animal. It is my hope that the viewer will feel a connection to that spirit and have a better understanding of this proud and noble people.”

Becoming

by Lillian Pitt A NAYA favorite, Lillian Pitt is one of the most highly regarded Native American artists in the Pacific Northwest. Primarily a sculptor and mixed media artist, she expresses her artistic vision through clay, bronze, wearable art, prints and glass.

Much of Lillian's work focuses on the ancient petroglyphs and pictographs that were carved and drawn by her ancestors in the Columbia River Gorge, as seen in this classic monoprint.

Petroglyphs and pictographs are both important parts of the rich cultural heritage of the Columbia River people. Using various media, Lillian creates contemporary fine art pieces that delight today’s art lovers, and at the same time, honor the history and legends of her people.

Spawn and Silvers

by Shaun Peterson Shaun Peterson is a member of the Puyallup Tribe of the Salish peoples. Shaun's work is culturally based in the ancient tradition of the Salish speaking tribal groups.

In Shaun's introduction to the Northwest Coast Native art discipline, he worked with a select group of artists skilled in their field of expertise. Shaun learned a great deal about the variety of styles that define the different cultural groups through the art itself.

At first drawing from historic pieces for inspiration, Shaun eventually learned to utilize the properties that defined the Salish style. Adaptation I and II

by Peter Boome Award winning Coast Salish artist Peter Boome is a member of the Upper Skagit Tribe of Washington State. Though he works in a variety of mediums, including painting, carving, inlay, and glass work, Peter is best known for his hand-pulled serigraphs, such as the brilliant four-color design offered here.

This design changed many times from conception to final form.

Beginning as a simple dogwood flower design with four hummingbirds, the idea was simple and clear. After gathering additional input and inspiration, the design changed quite a bit overtime, taking several different forms before becoming what it is today. As the artist states, “In short, the series was an exercise in adaptation.”

Though the series consists of four different iterations of this beautifully adaptive design, only two are available this year. Be on the lookout for the remaining two prints at next year’s NAYA Gala!

Grateful

by Peter Boome Peter Boome, a member of the Upper Skagit Tribe of Washington State, is a Coast Salish artist who works in a variety of mediums. His focus during the last few years has primarily been graphic work as a result of his academic schedule.

Peter’s specialty is hand-pulled serigraphs. He prints his own original designs, as well as the work of other artists. As an active member of his community, Peter enjoys giving back and continues to strive toward the expansion of tribal art.

Cycle of Life

by John Goodwin There are many events in nature that represent the cycle of life. Among many coastal tribes, the cycle of life is heralded by the spawning of the salmon each year. Young salmon migrate to their village far out in the ocean, and then after several years at sea endure an arduous journey fraught with dangers to return to their birth waters. The Salmon would always return because the tribes honored the Salmon People in their First Salmon Ceremonies. In doing so, they also teach the people to continue to overcome all odds–to survive and keep their traditional cultures alive.

John Goodwin, Makah, has a strong sense of family gained from extensive historical knowledge of Makah songs, dances, ceremonies, and rituals.

Goodwin developed a greater understanding of how the art manifested the teachings of his ancestors. Goodwin's passion to understand his traditional culture inspires a deep sense of responsibility: to always maintain a close connection to the teachings of his people.

Smokehouse

by John Goodwin John Goodwin, a member of the Makah Tribe, was born in 1948 to John and Norma Goodwin.

He has lived and worked on the Makah Reservation, located in the upper northwest corner of the United States, most of his life.

Honorably discharged from the Army, he returned home and became involved with the cultural of his people. By utilizing his artistic abilities, he realized he could contribute to his culture. He began by painting dancing robes and creating and painting bent wood cedar boxes.

Hand made drums became a surface on which he could practice his design and painting abilities.

by Rick Bartow Rick Bartow (1946-2016) was a member of the Wiyot tribe from Northwestern California and spent his life on the central Oregon Coast in Newport.

His work is collected worldwide, and the subject of over 100 solo exhibitions at prominent museums and galleries around the world, including a commissioned sculpture for the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian.

Widely celebrated for his stirring and expressive work, Bartow is best known for his unique use of contemporary artistic methods with techniques traditional to his Wiyot heritage (Humboldt Bay, Northern California) to portray transformative and spiritual figures.

For J & J & J is a perfect example of Bartow’s skill and soulfulness. This limited edition (17 of 20) drypoint etching on handmade Japanese papers shows this bird of prey standing poised and alert, projecting an image of strength and protection.

Three Aunties Weaving

by Greg Robinson Greg Robinson, born in 1957, has been an artist since childhood, with an early fascination for wildlife and tribal art after receiving a small carved canoe as a gift. He sold his first work of art in junior high school. His past and current works in the traditional Chinookan art forms are a tribute to the Columbia River ancestors, to whom art, life, stories, and culture were inseparable. Through his art and instruction, he hopes to inspire future Chinookan artisans.

Robinson produces a variety of work in the style of the Chinookan peoples of the middle to lower Columbia River and Willapa Bay. Working primarily in wood, large stone, bone and hide, he draws inspiration and technical knowledge from the study of ancient works in various private and museum collections, including the Portland Art Museum.

This beautiful and intricate giclée print depicts aunty crows weaving first man. Three weaving tools separate them. Their supernatural power is radiating directly into first man, and surrounds them.

Jemez Pot

by Brenda Tafoya The Jemez Pueblo is located in Central-Northern New Mexico. The pottery produced there is known for its distinctive earth-tone colors blending stone polished and matte finishes with painted and etched designs, as seen in this exquisite piece signed by Jemez Pueblo artist, Brenda Tafoya.

Ms. Tafoya has been making pottery since she was 10 years old, beginning with simple bowls and has refined her work to what it is today. She has developed her own style, which she refers to as "the melon cut style" using three different colors of slip. Her trademark is the kiva step, which you will find on both the designs for the pottery and in her signature.

Acoma Bird Pottery Fifty miles West of Albuquerque and near Enchanted Mesa is the historic Acoma pueblo. Acoma potters are blessed with one of the finest natural clay sources and when it is mixed with a crushed potsherd temper it produces a very thin walled and light weight pottery.

This thin-walled construction combined with polychrome, parrot, geometric, and floral designs has attracted collectors for more than a hundred years and we expect at least a hundred more.

This beautiful set of Acoma pottery made in the 1940s features birds that have been carefully molded out of the rim of each pot. Decorated with traditional floral motifs in natural brown and orange pigments, this set showcases a unique side of Acoma pottery that we don’t see everyday.

Acoma Pot

by Loretta Joe A beautifully decorated Acoma Pot by Loretta Joe. Loretta is from the Yellow Corn Clan and has been an active potter since 1977, having learned the art from her mother and grandmother.

Traditional Acoma pottery is made using a slatelike clay found within the hills surrounding the Pueblo. When fired using traditional methods, this clay allows the potters to form very thin walls, a common and sought-after characteristic of Acoma pottery.

Featuring a geometric design in traditional orange and brown pigments, this pot is in excellent condition and read to come home to you!

Quinault Paddle

by Titus Capoeman Measuring in at 66 inches long, this paddle is a true work of art! Beautifully hand-shaped from traditional red cedar wood, this paddle showcases classic coastal design in bold, natural pigments. Designed, made and generously donated by artist, educator and marine veteran, Titus Capoeman.

Coming from a distinguished line of traditional artisans, Titus is the son of artist Randy Capoeman and a member of the Quinault Indian Nation. After his father’s passing, Titus picked up where his father left off and now works to keep his artwork alive and on the market.

After recently gaining confidence in his own artistic abilities, Titus began creating works of his own, including traditional masks, drums and paddles. Many of his pieces have been sold or traded across the US, and recently across the world. His work can also be seen on display throughout the Seattle area in both galleries and public installations.

Titus is currently the culture advisor for the Quinault Nation where he coordinates projects designed to teach the fundamentals of what it means to be Quinault. In his own words, “I feel it’s my duty to maintain these teachings as well as teach to next generation.”

Woodpecker Bentwood Box

by Andy Peterson Bentwood boxes are among the most versatile objects made by the Northwest Coast peoples. Crafted using an ingenious technique that was specific to the region, the wood is bent to a 90-degree angle in three corners with the fourth corner being pegged, sewn or glued. In pre-contact times, when there were no metal tools or nails, this technique proved highly reliable for making strong, durable and watertight containers that were perfect for any number of uses. This classic bentwood box, made by Andy Peterson, depicts Woodpecker in traditional Salish design, and is a true testament to the art form.

Andy is a member of the Skokomish Tribe. He began carving after being inspired by a tour of a museum exhibiting Northwest Coast art and began exploring various art forms.

By the age of 18, he had taught himself how to both, carve and paint. Later, Andy and his Uncle Peter Peterson made a joint effort to revive the traditional steam-bent box at Skokomish. Andy continues to research and contribute to the revival of the Salish art style. He has taught many people in all traditional art forms and looks forward to working with his grandchildren and keeping the Salish Art forms alive.

Sea Guardian Button Blanket

by Alice and Nichole Maher Alice Maher’s button blankets are works of art and have become a very special tradition at the NAYA Gala. Alice Maher never makes blankets to sell, she only makes them for family, honoring purposes and ceremony.

Maher, her daughter, and granddaughter have created a spectacular work of art by carefully affixing hundreds of unique abalone and shell buttons to this blanket, most of which were collected during the Great Depression and passed along to the Maher family.

“Sea Guardian” reminds us that we are interdependent on the balance of our ocean and honors the unique eco-system and abundance of the great Pacifica. This design brings traditional Tlingit elements of sea urchin, kelp, jelly fish and two baby seals nesting on kelp beds.
