Voter Registration Deadlines in Your State We’ve compiled a list of deadlines for voter registration across the nation. Did you know some states offer voter registration on Election Day? Take a look at your state on pages 4 and 5.

Low Income and the Midterm Elections ARE YOUR RESIDENTS REGISTERED? CHART: In the November 2016 Election, 60% of United States Citizens making $19,999 or less per year reported they were registered to vote.

UNHEARD VOICES According to the Census Bureau, about 43% of people making $20,000 a year or less did not vote in the 2016 Election.

Twenty-eight percent of the same group reported they were not even registered to vote. The number of folks who did vote, however, generally increases as their incomes get higher.

• The proliferation of Voter ID laws and the cost associated with getting an ID to prove who you are at the polls (between $5-$58.50) • The fear of missing work “when time often equals money -- especially if you get paid by the hour.”

• Longer lines in precincts with more minorities. For those who do get paid by the hour, that’s more money lost.

• “Sharp divide among voters based on the education they attain.”

According to Malter, the Pew Research Center says “financial security” may not be “the primary cause for disengagement” but it does, in fact, affect “nearly every measure of political engagement.”

What you can do The Nationals Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) launched the “Our Homes, Our Votes” campaign to help you not only register residents to vote but also to educate and mobilize them.

• Consider offering registration training and making voter registration efforts part of your PHA’s “regular contact with residents.”

• Organize Voter Registration activities such as door-todoor campaigns.

• Encourage residents to volunteer and work the polls.

Early Voting Does your state offer early voting? NLIHC says “consider holding ballot parties where voters gather to go and vote as a group, perhaps after a discussion of affordable housing issues.”

Absentee Ballots These ballots allow you to vote by mail. Every state has different rules regarding absentee ballots. Your state might also require a valid excuse to vote absentee. Click the button to see what your state offers.
